  • Guardiola wants FA Cup replays scrapped

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says the scrapping of FA Cup replays could be the solution to football’s crowded fixture schedule.

The City boss has previously expressed his concern at the increasing demands placed on players.

Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Fulham will be City’s 37th game of the season.

“The Carabao Cup and FA Cup will be played. But maybe we could cancel the replays, have less teams in the Championship or Premier League,” said Guardiola.

“What is nice about this country is how you maintain the traditions. In traditions you can involve some new things to make the competitions nicer, but all the traditions are there, not just in sport but in culture and society and that is top. I admire that.

“I’m not saying what the FA has to do. When I said my comment I never expected the Carabao Cup or FA Cup was going to go.

“I tried to be honest and answer the question but I don’t think about what they have to do, it’s not my business. My business is to prepare my team better every day.

“When they decide to play these games, and the other games, we do it.”

Though City are still competing on four fronts, their grip on the Premier League title looks to be slipping away with Liverpool 16 points clear at the top with a game in hand.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have dropped just two points all season and look on course to break City’s record 100-point tally of two years ago.

“It can happen. The records are always there to be broken,” said Guardiola. “We broke it when someone thought it couldn’t be broken.

“Sooner or later it is going to happen – this season or in the future. History speaks clearly about that.”

  • EPL: Guardiola stunned as Man City lose to Wolves

Pep Guardiola conceded Manchester City were well below their best as the Premier League champions suffered a shock 2-0 defeat against Wolves on Sunday that left them eight points behind leaders Liverpool.

Guardiola’s side was rocked by two late goals from Wolves winger Adama Traore at the Etihad Stadium, and City boss Guardiola admitted his treble winners lacked their usual sharpness and paid the price for letting nerves get the better of them with their second defeat of the season.

“It was not our best day. We let them run twice, got nervous a little bit and our process to create chances was not good,” Guardiola said.

“We were not organised and lost balls in positions we could not lose them in.

“We had problems on the counter-attack in the end and it was a bad day.”

It was City’s latest unexpected loss after their 3-2 defeat at Norwich last month, and they already face a huge task to catch Liverpool.

Remembering how his side overturned a seven-point deficit to Liverpool in the title race last season, Guardiola called on his stars to bounce back when City return to action after the international break.

“Wolves defend. They play long balls and defend, they then go on the counter. It is a physical team, a strong team so know how good they are,” Guardiola said.

“We had two chances, one onto the crossbar and with Bernardo Silva. They did really well.

“We are going to come back again to try.”

  • Sterling should target Messi, Ronaldo level – Guardiola

Sterling should target Messi, Ronaldo level – Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says Raheem Sterling could be capable of reaching the level of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

After two fine displays for England this week, national boss Gareth Southgate said Sterling has the potential to become as good as the duo.

Guardiola says “nobody can compare” with them currently but that Sterling should aspire to reach that level.

“It would be a dream for him, for all of us,” said the Spaniard.

“If Raheem can target that level – wow.

“We will be here to help him and of course he can do it but I will not be the guy to put limits to cancel it, to say ‘don’t, don’t think about that’. No, absolutely not – I want it.

“But right now, nobody in all the clubs in the world can compare with these two guys and what they have done every single week during 10 years.

“They are absolute legends and nobody can compare, nobody.”

Sterling has scored eight goals in eight appearances for club and country this season, including in both of England’s Euro 2020 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Kosovo.

Guardiola says he hopes Sterling does not get distracted by the praise for his performances.

“I’m so happy for him, for the way he’s playing here and with the national team, but hopefully he won’t read too much,” he said.

“He cannot listen to these kind of things – that wouldn’t be good for him, because nobody can compare with Cristiano or Messi.

“I’m so happy with what he’s done since we’ve been together, not just right now. Everything that has happened to him has been good because he has an incredible work ethic and is an incredibly nice guy. I’m delighted for him.”

  • Manchester City will ‘stand up’ in title race after ‘cruel’ exit – Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said that his team would “stand up” and fight for the Premier League title after their dreams of a quadruple were ended by Wednesday’s dramatic exit from the Champions League.

City went out on the away goals rule after their 4-3 win at the Etihad Stadium left the two legged quarter-final standing at 4-4 on aggregate.

Guardiola’s side thought a late goal from Raheem Sterling had earned them a place in the semi-finals but the effort was ruled.

A VAR review confirmed that Sergio Aguero was offside in the build-up.

“It is cruel but it is what it is and we have to accept it,” said Guardiola.

“After 20 minutes we were 3-2 up. In the second half we created a lot of chances and we scored the goals we needed.

“Unfortunately, it was a bad end for us so congratulations to Tottenham and good luck for the semi-finals,” said the Spaniard.

City were also eliminated by English opponents, Liverpool, in the quarter-finals last season.

Guardiola said he continued to back the use of VAR, which also allowed Fernando Llorente’s decisive goal for Spurs despite suspicions of handball.

But he questioned the decision reached over Llorente’s goal – which officials concluded had rolled off the Spaniard’s hip and into the net in the wild encounter at the Etihad.

“I support VAR but maybe from one angle Fernando Llorente’s goal is handball, maybe from the referee’s angle it is not,” he said.

A packed stadium had roared City on in the second half with a thundering strike from Aguero 59th minute seeming to send Guardiola’s side on their way to the last four.

“I am so proud of the players and the fans,” said Guardiola.

“I have never heard noise like that since I have been in Manchester but football is unpredictable.”

City host Spurs again on Saturday in the Premier League as they battle with Liverpool for top spot having seen their dream of a quadruple end.

Having won the Carabao Cup (League Cup), City are in the FA Cup final and are two points behind Liverpool, with a game in hand, in the league.

“We have to stand up and react. It is a close (short amount of) time and the same team. We can’t think too much now.

“We have to try to sleep as much as possible and the day before the game we are going to prepare for the game,” he said.

“We have fought for nine or 10 months in the Premier League and still we are there. It is in our hands.

“Today is tough and tomorrow will be tough too but the day after we will be ready.”

  • City better than last season – Guardiola

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City are a better team than last season – and has highlighted the moment he knew the Premier League title was won in 2017/18.

City hit the 100-point mark as they won the league in record-breaking fashion last season.

They are involved in a tight title race with Liverpool this season, but Guardiola thinks his side have improved from a year ago.

In little details we are better than last season, which is normal because we have more time together,” he told Sky Sports.

Asked how City have improved, Guardiola added: “Our process, our build-ups, our high pressing we can use different movements, we have more alternatives to defend into attack and we are more solid when we defend deeper.”

City were confirmed as champions on April 15 after Manchester United’s shock 1-0 home defeat to West Brom.

They had missed the chance to win the title a week earlier after blowing a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 at home to United – a result that was sandwiched between their two-legged Champions League quarter-final loss to Liverpool.

While Guardiola acknowledged the United defeat was “disappointing”, he said the way his side responded, winning 3-1 at Tottenham, showed him that they would win the title.

Even in games when you are winning 2-0 or 3-0 with 20 minutes left to play I am still not comfortable in saying it’s already done,” he explained.

But in that game, the way we reacted after a tough week with a Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool in the middle and then United, the way we played the first 10-15 minutes in that game, said to me that we are going to win the Premier League.”

  • Guardiola, Klopp, Emery up for Premier League Manager of the Month

Guardiola, Klopp, Emery up for Premier League Manager of the Month

Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Unai Emery and Nuno Espirito Santo have been nominated for the Premier League’s Manager of the Month award for September.
Guardiola’s Manchester City side were perfect in the Premier League in September with wins against Newcastle, Fulham, Cardiff and Brighton. They scored 12 times in their four matches, while conceding just once.
That run has helped City move top of the table, ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.

Liverpool will attempt to move back into first place on Sunday, when they host City at Anfield.
Klopp’s side won three of their four matches in September, beating Leicester, Tottenham and Southampton before drawing with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last weekend.
After losing his opening two games of the season, Emery has guided Arsenal to fifth in the table with a run of five consecutive victories. The Gunners were perfect in September with wins over Cardiff, Newcastle, Everton and Watford.
Santo’s Wolves are up to ninth in the table after going through September unbeaten. They beat West Ham, Burnley and Southampton and also earned a creditable draw at Old Trafford against Manchester United.
Eden Hazard, Raheem Sterling, James Maddison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Alexandre Lacazette and Willy Boly are all nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month award.
Hazard was in fine form for Chelsea with five goals in four games, including a hat-trick against Cardiff.
Sterling found the net three times for City and also added two assists.
Maddison, who was called into the England squad for the first time this week, scored twice and added two assists for Leicester City.
Icelandic star Sigurdsson scored three times for Everton to further cement himself as a key member of Marco Silva’s starting line-up.
Lacazette played a big part in Arsenal’s perfect month, with goals against Cardiff and Everton and an assist against Newcastle.
Boly is the only defender among the six nominations. He is recognised for helping Wolves keep clean sheets against West Ham, Burnley and Southampton.

  • BREAKING: FA fines Guardiola £20,000 over Catalan ribbon protest

Manchester City Manager, Pep Guardiola has been fined £20,000 and warned regarding his future conduct after accepting a Football Association charge of wearing a “political message”.

The count related to the Manchester City manager’s wearing of a yellow ribbon in support of imprisoned Catalan politicians during his side’s FA Cup defeat at Wigan Athletic on 19 February. Guardiola’s deposition pointed out that he had the ribbon covered before half-time and it only became visible accidentally during the second half.

An FA statement said: “Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has been fined £20,000 and warned as to his future conduct after admitting an FA charge for wearing a political message, specifically a yellow ribbon, in breach of The FA’s kit and advertising regulation.”

The Catalan may continue to wear the ribbon for his pre- and post-game media duties but it remains to be seen if he will ensure it is covered during his 90 minutes on the touchline. The regulation refers to this time period.

The ribbon is in support of prisoners in Catalonia following November’s referendum regarding independence for the region.

Meanwhile, Guardiola has admitted he does not like playing on Mondays before City’s visit to Stoke. The last time City were in action on a Monday evening was their defeat at Wigan, though the manager says his aversion to playing a day or two after everyone else dates back to his time with Barcelona.

“It’s nothing to do with Wigan – the reason we lost there was that for 50 minutes it was 10 v 11 and we were not precise enough to find a goal,” Guardiola said. “I just prefer to play at the weekend, when all the other teams are playing. I have had some bad experiences on Mondays.”

Guardiola will take the opportunity of a blank Saturday to watch Manchester United v Liverpool, partly because United are among City’s next opponents. “We play them in two or three weeks so I intend to take a look,” the manager said, “But it is a big derby, an English classic, the history of both teams is amazing.”

Should United lose at Old Trafford the possibility exists that City could be crowned champions before the Manchester derby at the Etihad, though Guardiola does not like to look too far ahead. “The distance [we are ahead] is not normal in the beginning of March; it’s almost done but we are not the champions,” he said. “The champions are still Chelsea. We have to get the points as soon as possible, knowing that we have the opportunity. We need to be focused because Stoke away is always difficult. They are fighting to stay in the Premier League, and any time you are up against a team like that it is complicated.”

  • FA charges Guardiola for wearing yellow ribbon during matches

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has been charged by the English FA for wearing a yellow ribbon during matches.

His action is in apparent protest against the imprisonment of pro-independence politicians in his native Catalonia.

The former FC Barcelona manager has sported the ribbon in Manchester City’s England Premier League matches as well as games in domestic and European cup competitions this season.

He has until March 5 to respond to the charges, an FA statement said on Friday.

It added that the ribbon had breached the FA’s kit and advertising regulations.

In December, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was asked to explain comments he made before the derby match against Manchester City.

The comments had included doubts whether he would be allowed to make political statements like the Spaniard.

  • Title race not yet over if in Man utd’s position – Guardiola

Pep Guardiola says he would not give up on a title race if his Man City side were in the same position as Jose Mourinho’s Man Utd.

Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat at Tottenham on Wednesday left them trailing 15 points behind Guardiola’s City side at the top of the table with only 13 games left to play.

Jose Mourinho admitted City are now uncatchable but he remains desperate to finish ahead of the chasing pack.

Ahead of Man City’s game against Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday, Guardiola was asked if he would concede the title in Mourinho’s position.

He replied: “No, I don’t think so. That is not going to happen.

“We have shown even in our two defeats this season that we will try until the very end.

“We play every game to give sense to what we are doing. I know the 15-point distance is quite big at the moment. It’s the same gap from six games ago.

“In football and in sport anything can happen. You are good today but tomorrow you are bad.

“The most important thing we have done is focus. In my experience until everything is done, you have to be prepared for anything to happen.”

  • Man City will not remain unbeaten – Guardiola after winning run end

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola reiterated his belief his side will not go through the Premier League season unbeaten after their 18-game top-flight winning run was ended by a goalless draw at Crystal Palace.

City conceded an injury-time penalty but goalkeeper Ederson saved from Luka Milivojevic, prompting Match of the Day host Gary Lineker to say Guardiola’s side have an “air of invincibility about them”.

The draw preserves their unbeaten record in the league this season and takes them 14 points clear at the top – the biggest gap between the leaders and the chasing pack at this stage of the season in top-flight history.

Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal went through the 2003-04 Premier League season unbeaten, but Guardiola thinks City will not match that feat.

“I am not thinking to be unbeaten,” said Guardiola. “That is not going to happen.

“Maybe Arsene is worried about that but I tell him many times that 2004 run is for him. Today is completely different to 2004.

“There are now more strong teams, a lot of competitions, a lot of games.”

Guardiola left Selhurst Park with two injury concerns – striker Gabriel Jesus leaving the field in tears in the first half, and playmaker Kevin de Bruyne taken off on a stretcher after a heavy tackle from Jason Puncheon in the final minute.

    Palace energy gets deserved point

Palace were rewarded as their defensive grit and off-the-ball energy shone through in an enthralling contest.

The question, after they pressed so ferociously in the first half, was whether they were fit enough in the midst of the congested Christmas fixture list to keep it up.

But they did just that, with midfielder Milivojevic covering more ground than anyone on the pitch (12.69 km), though that will be of little consolation after his spot-kick – given when Raheem Sterling fouled Wilfried Zaha in the box in the 92nd minute – was saved.

The point means the Eagles start the new year outside of the bottom three, a point above West Ham in 18th – symbolic for a club that suffered seven straight defeats without scoring during their miserable start to the season.

They also secured only their second home clean sheet in the league all season, against a team that has scored 102 goals in 2017.

The downside to playing their energetic part in such an eventful contest was a first-half injury to centre-back Scott Dann, with boss Roy Hodgson already light on defenders in Mamadou Sakho’s absence because of a calf problem.

But they can take heart from creating other opportunities to win aside from the penalty – full-back Patrick van Aanholt testing Ederson in the first half and Andros Townsend wasting a gilt-edged chance to convert on 78 minutes.

With Yohan Cabaye playing further forward than he did in their defeat by Arsenal, Palace had a courage with the ball to match their resilience off it.

“I’m very proud of the team’s performance,” said Hodgson. “I know how difficult it is to play a team of Manchester City’s quality.

“Before the game we would have been jumping through hoops at having claimed a point, then you get a penalty late in the game, so there is an element of sadness at a chance missed.

“But I’ve said to the players: ‘Continue that level of performance week after week and we’ve got a good chance of staying in the league.’”

No crisis for City but wear and tear mounts

Not winning their 19th consecutive league game is hardly evidence of the wheels coming off City’s title charge, but there were signs that could be problematic in south London.

Their ninth game in December saw more onus on the considerable creativity of De Bruyne in David Silva’s continued absence.

But the Belgian’s set-pieces were off colour – only one of six deliveries was dangerous, and his passing accuracy (80%) was less than any other starting City player.

Now Guardiola may have to cope without him after that late withdrawal, although he appeared able to walk alongside club physios after being carried off.

Leroy Sane could step up to fill the gap in the coming weeks, but he struggled too. The 21-year-old won only half of his 14 duels, and was often second best to Palace defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

He was meekly dispossessed by the on-loan Manchester United man in the first half, and berated by De Bruyne over the timing of another run. Then he was booked for kicking the ball away in frustration.

It remains to be seen if Guardiola moves to bolster his attack by prising Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in January, however the City boss said in his post-match news conference that he expects the forward to stay with the Gunners.

“He is a player for Arsenal and I think he is going to stay there,” he said. “In two days we have another game after that we have meetings. My feeling now is Alexis is an Arsenal player.”
