I want Grealish to get angry – Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has stated that he wants Jack Grealish to get angry.

The England winger has been in and out of the team this season, after winning the Treble with the Citizens last term.

Grealish came out for the 6-1 win over Bournemouth, with Jeremy Doku scoring once and providing four assists.

“I want Jack angry and I want him to play well,” said Guardiola post-game.

“This is the way to maintain consistency at that level. Jack is back. The way he played at Old Trafford, to give us more composure in that position, was decisive for us. We need everyone.

“There are a lot of games to come and everyone has to compete. And, when they don’t play, train better the next day, because the moment is coming and when you are mentally there in the head, you will perform well and we will win games.

“You will be happy and everyone will be happy. This is what we have to do.”

Why I chose Doku over Grealish – Guardiola

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says Jeremy Doku deserved his start for victory over Brighton.

Guardiola was delighted with the winger’s performance for the 2-1 win.

He said, “Jeremy can play on the right perfectly. Left he is not used to.

“Years ago, it was left player on left and right on right side. Now it’s difficult to find.

“Jack (Grealish) is more controlled. He doesn’t have the one-v-one speed.

“Today I doubt a lot the line-up because the game would have more transitions. They are man-to-man and aggressive so we will lose more than usual to make more transition.

“I thought Phil (Foden) and Jeremy with their pace could help us. I thought a lot that Mateo (Kovacic) and Matheus (Nunes) could help us but Bernardo (Silva) with the way we want to press is so important.”

Ballon d’Or 2023: Guardiola tips Messi to beat Haaland

Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, has tipped Lionel Messi to win this year’s Ballon d’Or prize ahead of city player, Erling Haaland.

Guardiola admits that although Erling Haaland scored many goals as City clinched a treble last season, Messi led Argentina to winning the 2022 World Cup.

He told a press conference on Friday: “I always said that the Ballon d’Or had to be two sections. One for Messi and one for the others.

“Haaland should win yes or yes. We won the treble, he scored a million goals. I’d love Erling to win. But Messi… Leo won the World Cup!”

Messi is widely expected to be named winner of the award for a record-extending eighth time on October 30.

It will take the 36-year-old clear of eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who has won it five times.

EPL: Why we lost to Arsenal – City Manager, Guardiola

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has reacted to his side’s loss to Arsenal at the Emirate on Sunday.

According to him, Arsenal needed “one deflection” to defeat them 1-0 on Sunday.

Substitute Gabriel Martinelli grabbed the only goal of the game in the 86th minute, when his shot hit Nathan Ake, to send the keeper the wrong way.

It is Arsenal’s first win over the Premier League champions in 12 matches.

Guardiola, speaking to MOTD, said: “One deflection. We had 10–15 really good moments in the first half. They started the second half well. It was a tight game. Not many chances, one deflection.

“It was a tight game. We defended really well; the players gave everything. It is football; we lost the game. We will come back stronger.”

Guardiola opens up on clash with Erling Haaland

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has given details of his argument with Erling Haaland during their 3-0 win at Burnley on Friday.

The Premier League champions began the new campaign in style at Turf Moor, with Haaland scoring a first-half brace.

But as the two teams headed for the dressing room, Guardiola could be seen in a heated exchange with the Norway striker.

After the game, Guardiola revealed what transpired.

He said: “He wanted the ball in behind to him, and that ball hasn’t to be in behind. Sometimes you have to be patient to find the right moment.

“He was not frustrated, I am not frustrated. In football it happens. Don’t be dramatic.”

  • Community Shield: Guardiola blames new rule for loss against Arsenal

Community Shield: Guardiola blames new rule for loss against Arsenal

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has blamed officiating changes after city lost to Arsenal on penalties in Sunday’s community shield game at Wembley.

City took the lead through Cole Palmer in the 77th minute, but Leandro Trossard made it 1-1 in the 11th minute of added time after his shot deflected off Manuel Akanji.

Referee Stuart Attwell initially indicated an additional eight minutes at the end of the game, but it was extended further due to a clash of heads in that period involving Kyle Walker and Thomas Partey.

The new rule allows referees to allow give additional minutes to games if time were wasted in added time.

But Guardiola has now argued that the changes in the rule will have a profound effect on matches.

He said: “It is not annoying; we have to get used to it. I had the feeling, not because we were winning 1-0, it was just the fact I had the feeling that much didn’t happen to extend by eight minutes.

“But it is a good question for the [rule-making International Football Association Board] and all the people because they don’t consult the managers; they don’t consult the players.

“Whatever their opinion, we have to accept it. Now the games will be 100 minutes, that’s for sure.”

New Barcelona signing Ilkay Gundogan has revealed that Manchester CityPep Guardiola hoped they would leave the club together.

Gundogan departed City in the transfer window after winning the treble, signing a two-year deal that could go on for another year.

While the German wanted to remain at City, they only made him an offer of a single year.

“One of the hardest calls I had to make was to Pep, telling him that I was going to leave,” Gundogan said after signing for Barca.

“All I could do was to say thank you. Not just for this season, or for all the trophies, but for bringing me here in the first place.

“I will never forget when I hurt my knee at the end of the season with Dortmund [in 2016] and I had to get surgery, I was so worried that City would pull out of the deal for me. But Pep called me on the phone and said they will wait no matter how long it takes.

“I think maybe Pep was hoping that we would come here to City together and leave together, but I know that he understands my decision. I am sure it helps that I’m going to his boyhood club.”

Pep Guardiola looks tired – Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas has questioned Pep Guardiola’s future at Manchester City.

The Como midfielder believes Guardiola has looked exhausted during City’s Treble winning campaign.

Cesc told Mundo Deportivo: “I think now the future of the club depends on two things: how long the team will remain hungry after all the trophies won, and also how long Guardiola will stay at City.

“Lately he looked tired. It is clear that he will not leave next season, because he wants to win more titles.

“But the future of the club directly depends on his stay there.”

  • FA Cup: No distractions facing Man Utd in final – Guardiola

FA Cup: No distractions facing Man Utd in final – Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says they’ll throw everything at Manchester United in today’s FA Cup final.

City have the Champions League final in a week’s time.

But Guardiola says: “They know that these players will give everything to beat Manchester United.

“The consequence of the result, who knows it? I don’t know it. I don’t think Erik ten Hag knows it.

“But enjoy the moment. Tonight, when the people travel and tomorrow, unfortunately there’s still the strikes with the train, enjoy it and enjoy the same next week for the next final to see their team. It’s the best way.

“You have to understand it’s a football game. Everything can happen. And we are going to do everything, everything we can do to win against United.

“I understand completely for the City fans, who were in their shadow for decades, we are playing the first time in our history the FA Cup against them. For them, too, the first time. So we will try to do the best game as possible.

“United in the FA Cup final deserves our full attention and commitment.”

  • Man City in once in a lifetime position – Guardiola

Man City in once in a lifetime position – Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said the club is currently in a once in a lifetime position.

He wants his players to recharge after Sunday’s Premier League finale.

The champions will close out their Premier League campaign against Brentford before their FA Cup and Champions League final commitments.

Guardiola said: “If we had played one game a week for the last month, maybe I wouldn’t give the players two days off but in that moment we need to disconnect.

“Even our physios and doctors and chefs, they work incredibly hard in this period. They don’t have time off. They need to disconnect.

“They are here working 10 hours to get the players ready to help them recover, and help them get it in this stressful period.

“That’s why, go with your families, if the sun is shining, play golf, do whatever you want and go to the quality to prepare for the finals. You have to train a little but exactly what we need to arrive in the best conditions for the final, they know.

“Everybody knows what position we are in. It comes once in a lifetime, twice in a lifetime?

“Being champions in the Premier League three games before the end and play two finals – that doesn’t come every season. Once we are there, first of all you have to relax and enjoy and do your best. No one can be sure we will be in that position again.”
