PDP postpones campaign launch for Imo guber poll

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed the launch of its campaign for the Nov. 11 Imo governorship election.

The PDP said this in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Debo Ologunagba.

Ologunagba, also the Chairman, Special National Publicity Committee for the election, said that the postponement of the launch earlier scheduled for Sept. 7 was done after a thorough consultation with stakeholders and the leadership of the party.

He said that the action was in view of a national development that required the full involvement of the party including critical stakeholders from Imo.

“While regretting the inconveniences the postponement may cause, the PDP urges all leaders, critical stakeholders and members of our party, especially in Imo to remain steadfast.

“They should remain steadfast in the collective efforts of Imo State people to rescue and make their state safe again with our candidate, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu on the saddle.

“A new date for the formal campaign launch will be communicated by the party leadership in due course,” Ologunagba said.

He commended the people of Imo for their unrelenting patriotism, courage, commitment, and dedication in support of PDP and its candidate.

PDP trying to cover its tracks after rigging Delta guber poll – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is trying to cover its tracks after rigging the March 18 Delta governorship election.

Dr. Timi Tonye, the Deputy Director, Media and Publicity, Delta APC campaign organisation, said this in a statement on Sunday in Asaba.

Tonye said that information at the disposal of the party revealed that the state’s Commissioner for Information and spokesperson for the PDP presidential campaign council, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, had raised alarm that the rigging might be uncovered easily.

“Aniagwu said that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) issued stringent guidelines to state Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on the issuance of Certified True Copies (CTCs) of electoral documents for litigation by parties and candidates.

“He said that INEC was specific in directing its RECs to compare the result in form EC8A with what is recorded on the IReV portal before issuing CTCs.

”Aniagwu is demanding from INEC, a blatant breach of the provisions of the Electoral Law which spells out clearly the process of collating and announcing the results of the governorship election.

“It is most ridiculous for anyone to request INEC not to implement the Electoral Law and INEC’s own rules in regard to issuing of the Certified True Copies of results of the governorship election in Delta,” he said.

He added: “It is even more absurd to impugn ‘circumvention of justice’ in the statement the PDP issued when in truth they are the people that are attempting to pervert justice by their now notorious BVAS by-pass in the just concluded elections.

“The impudence and mendacity of that demand is offensive and deeply insulting to the sensibilities of the Delta electorate, who have been cheated out of the true results of the election they keenly participated in.

“The PDP, their sympathizers, and co-travellers are aware of the egregious falsifications of the results of the Delta governorship election and the utter falsehood in the announced results, wants the bogus and falsified results published by the collation officers in the state’s INEC office to stand and not controverted by the correct counts of accreditations recorded by IReV.

“The PDP does not want the upload of results from across the state into the national database BVAS to be used to verify the results published by the Delta collation officers.

”This is the reason PDP wants the Certified True Copy of the election result issued in Asaba.

“The fear of verification of the announced results has petrified the PDP. The sheer volume of the diabolism, rigging, and other actions to steal an election PDP clearly lost must be resisted by every patriotic citizen of Delta.

“As we proceed to seek justice in the matter of the 2023 governorship election, we ask the citizens of the state to be vigilant, steadfast, and rally around the APC to safeguard democracy in Delta and the integrity of the 2023 governorship election.

”We are determined to return the stolen mandate to the true winner of the 2023 governorship election”.

  • APC petitions INEC over Delta guber poll

APC petitions INEC over Delta guber poll

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the outcome of the March 18 governorship election in Delta.

The petition was signed by Mr Godwin Anaughe, the state APC Director, Election, and Strategy on Saturday in Asaba.

Anaughe said that the collation of the results was not in line with the Electoral Act, 2022.

“Following the conduct and announcement of results, the Electoral Act makes provision for the collation of the announced results in order to determine the winner of the election.

    “Section 64(4) of the Electoral Act provides; a collation officer or returning officer at an election shall collate and announce the result of an election, subject to his or her verification and confirmation that the;

“(A) number of accredited voters stated on the collated result are correct and consistent with the number of accredited voters recorded and transmitted directly from polling units under section 47(2) of this Act; and

    (B) the votes stated on the collated result are correct and consistent with the votes or results recorded and transmitted directly from polling units under section 60(4) of this Act,” he said.

Anaughe added: “The All Progressives Congress in the course of this state collation exercise, has raised questions as to the correctness of the votes stated in the collated results being produced from many of the Local Government Areas before the returning officer as it is contemplated under section 64(6) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which provides:

“Where during the collation of results, there is a dispute regarding a collated result or the result of an election from any polling unit, the collation officer or RETURNING OFFICER shall use the following to determine the correctness of the disputed result-

    “(A) The original of the disputed collated results for each of the polling units where the election is disputed;

    “(B)The smart card reader (in this case-the BVAS) used for accreditation of the voters in each of polling units where the election is disputed;

(C)Data of accreditation recorded and transmitted directly from each polling unit where the election is disputed as prescribed under section 47(2) of this Act; and

(D)The votes and results of the election recorded and transmitted directly from each polling unit where the election is disputed under section 60(4) of this Act.”

“For the avoidance of doubt, without prejudice to the correctness of any collated result, as may arise from any inquest, the APC has disputed and is still disputing before this Collation Body, the correctness of the collated results from all polling units” in the Local Government Areas of the state.

”In Delta North Senatorial District, all the nine councils were listed. They are Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Ika North East, Ika South, Oshimili North, Oshimili South, Ukwani, Ndokwa East, and Ndokwa West.

”The areas listed in Delta South Senatorial District are Bomadi (Only Wards 07, 08, and 09, that is, Akugbene 1, Akugbene 2, and Akugbene 3), Burutu, Patani, Warri North, Warri South West, Warri South, and Isoko North

”Delta Central Senatorial District has the following: Ethiope East, Okpe, Ughelli South (only Wards 04, 05, 07, and 08), Sapele (Only Wards 02, 03, 05, 08, and 10).

“We know for a fact that every political party and candidate or its agent has the right to contest the correctness of any collated result pursuant to section 64(6) of the Electoral Act, 2023 and once that is done the Collation Officer or Returning Officer has a bounden or mandatory DUTY to inquire into the disputed collated result by taking the steps outlined in this section of the Electoral Act”.

“The collation officer does not have discretion in the matter.

“Section 64(5) provides that a collation officer or returning officer shall use the number of accredited voters recorded and transmitted directly from the polling unit under section 47(2) of this act and the votes or results recorded and transmitted directly from the polling unit under section 60(4) of this act to collate and announce the result of an election if a collated result at his or a lower level of collation is not correct.

“It is our contention that in the above LGAs, there was a massive bypass of the BVAS and illegal entry of false results”.

INEC had declared Sheriff Oborevwori of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the 18 March governorship election in the state.

The State INEC Collation Officer, Onuwari Georgewill, a professor and the vice-chancellor, University of Port Harcourt, said that Oborevwori polled a total of 360,234 votes to defeat his closest opponent, Ovie Omo-Agege of the APC who scored 240,229 votes.

Guber Poll: Okowa berates opposition candidate, says lies can’t make you governor

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, has berated an opposition governorship candidate for the March 11 Governorship elections in the state for alleging that his (Okowa) administration borrowed N850 billion.

The governor, who did not name the candidate, debunked the claim as a lie, saying that a governor’s seat is a decent office and that only the truth would take any aspirant there.

Okowa stated this on Tuesday while playing host to executive members of Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), who paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Asaba.

The governor, while congratulating executive members of the union on their successful emergence and inauguration, said his appointees, including sons and daughters of Urhobo nation, had worked with him to stabilise governance in the state.

“They (political appointees) have all worked hard with me to be able to stabilise this government and achieve what we have achieved.

“It is my duty to truly thank them for the various roles that they have played.

“The only thing that I find very funny is that now people are beginning to spread lies.

“Recently, one of your sons who is also a candidate in the forthcoming election, has been spreading a lot of lies about the government borrowing about N850 billion, that is a lie.

“Somebody do not need to lie to their people just to attain the office of governor.

“The office of a governor is a decent office and a position of responsibility and integrity, therefore, anyone who aspires to be there must be one who is ready to speak truth to the people.

“You do not need to lie to the people just because you want the votes of the people. Anyone who does that is not worthy to be the governor of Delta State,” he said.

The governor called on various ethnic nationalities in the state to maintain peace and unity in the course of the March 11 Governorship and State House of Assembly elections in the country.

He particularly called on sons and daughters of Urhobo nation to continue to promote peace as the nation transit from one government to the other.

“We request that as we transit from one government to the other, that you do the best you can to try and call on the sons and daughters of Urhobo nation to maintain peace in the course of the elections.

“I also want to urge you to remember that as the leadership of the apex body of the Urhobo nation, the UPU, it is a strong duty of yours to relate with other ethnic nationalities to ensure that working together, we are able to protect and strengthen the peace that we now enjoy in Delta.

“In the last eight years, it has been a very good story for us. Our ethnic groups have tried to bond together and I want to urge you to do all you can to relate with other ethnic nationalities.

“Peace is very important to us. We don’t wait until things get bad before we start building peace. We can work towards building peace by ensuring that there is inclusiveness in government.

“I am glad that the Urhobo House is where it is today and I thank God for the relationship that enabled us to support the project and that the funds were put to good use,” Okowa said.

He, however,  expressed the hope of having a good working relationship with them in the remaining two months plus.

Earlier, the President-General of UPU, Ese Owe, who led executive members of the union on the courtesy visit, said that they were in Government House to formally introduce themselves to him.

He expressed appreciation to the governor for the opportunity given to Urhobo sons and daughters to contribute their quota to the development of the state through the appointment he (Okowa) gave to them in various capacities.

PRESS RELEASE DATED THURSDAY 17TH FEBRUARY, 2022. OMINOUS CLOUD OF POLITICAL VIOLENCE: A CALL FOR PEACE 1.

” The Osun Development Association (ODA) a non-partisan and development focused organization made up of eminent indigenes of Osun State from all works of life views with serious concern the current tension and anxiety in the state with regards to political activities preceding the Governorship election planned to hold in the State in July 2022.

“We are justifiably troubled that the evolving situation is creating a major breach of peace and order in our State 2. For all peace loving citizens of the state, the full dividends of democracy can only be enjoyed in an atmosphere of law and order.

“This is the basic requirement for our State in the quest for sustainable development. However unfolding events of the past few weeks seem to suggest that great danger lies ahead. Therefore there are reasonable grounds for apprehension as political thuggery and violence associated with intra party primaries are being presented as an ugly precursor to the mayhem that may characterize the main election.

“This is certainly unfair to the peace-loving people of Osun State, which the politicians are aspiring to serve. 3. The struggle for the control of political party structures, the process of choosing party flag bearers and the election of the State Governor are normal processes that must be part of every electoral cycle.

“Political parties must strengthen their internal structures to ensure that their processes do not create problems for other law- abiding citizens.

“ODA condemns in the strongest terms unnecessary political brigandage that could make intra party and interparty misunderstanding snowball into full bloody crises. The Association offers its platform for conflict resolution which we have deployed to successive State administrations since the Association was founded in 1995 and calls on all people of goodwill within and outside Osun State to broker peace for sustainable development.

“We urge all Stakeholders involved to exercise great restraint in their utterances and conduct to prevent further escalation of a breach of peace.

“The windows of reconciliation must be kept open to keep our State peaceful. 5. ODA welcomes the recent peace pact signed by representatives of the major political parties facilitated by the Osun State police command. Through this instrument the representatives of the parties committed themselves to eschew violence from the electioneering process we urge all party members and their followers to live up to the letters and the spirit of these peace agreements.

  • Anambra PDP to sanction those who compromised during guber poll

Anambra PDP to sanction those who compromised during guber poll

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Anambra Chapter, says it will review its performance in the November 6 governorship election in the state.

The party which made the resolution at a Stakeholders’ Meeting in Awka on Tuesday, said it would sanction party members who sabotaged the election.

The PDP said it would no longer tolerate a situation where members left the party to join other political parties during the election only to return afterwards, adding that such people would be given the back seats instead, upon their return.

Speaking at the event, Ndubuisi Nwobu, Chairman of the party in Anambra, said the expanded meeting, comprising 138 party topshots was convened to take a retroactive look at the recent guber election.

Nwobu said the party went into the election with the best candidate in the person of Mr Valentine Ozigbo whom he said did his very best to ensure that the flag handed to him took the party to the government house.

He said many factors militated against the mandate while thanking Sen. Uche Ekwunife for working hard, despite not being favoured for the ticket of the party.

According to him, some members chickened out of our party because they were thrown carrots at, what was thrown at them is very infinitesimal to what was thrown at some of us.

“All those who left us, don’t be surprised they will start sneaking back. If they come in, we will give them the back seat where they deserve. It will be a lesson for tomorrow because if we don’t do it, people will continue in wrong acts.

On his part, Sen. Ben Ndi-Obi said any party that didn’t have discipline cannot win an election.

“We must learn to sanction erring members.

“Today, we still have cases in court by PDP members. I will champion that those people be sanctioned. We cannot continue like this. We have bigwigs in the party, and we must strive for a united PDP,” he said.

Mr Valentine Ozigbo, candidate of the party in the election, also attended the meeting.

  • Anambra 2021: SDP guber candidate promises to end social ills

Anambra 2021: SDP guber candidate promises to end social ills

Dr Obinna Uzo, candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, in the Anambra governorship election on Nov. 6, said that his administration will end the prevailing insecurity in the state if elected governor.

Uzo said this during a town-hall meeting oraganised by the SDP state party chairman, Chief Cyril Chinwuba, in Awka on Sunday.

He urged the SDP stakeholders from the 326 wards of the 21 local government areas of the state that his administration will be guided by the party’s philosophy.

Uzo said that the SDP is the only political party in the state that have a genuine programme that is targeted at uplifting the indigents.

He said that he wants to do things differently in Anambra. With the party ideology, all sectors of the economy will be structured to benefit everybody in the state.

“I have a plan to restructure the core areas of focus in the state to ensure quality and affordable schools, markets, health centres, roads. security and Agriculture amongst others,” he said.

Uzo said that all forms of criminality would be checked through empowering the poor to be gainfully engaged either in trading, agriculture and through skill acquisition.

He stated that he first contested for the governorship of Anambra in 2003; that time I contested against Dr. Chris Ngige, Mr. Peter Obi, and, some others.

He said that the zeal to develop the state to a higher level keeps pushing him to rewrite the mistake of the past leaders.

“I have been in the act of philosophy over the years, building houses for the poor, the widows; awarding scholarships to indigents students, and empowering the youths, amongst others.

“I am in politics to improve the welfare of the poor; if we eventually emerge victorious on Nov. 6, which I am confident I will win because you people have been mobilising the grassroots, we shall rebuild Anambra.

Uzo said to have quick development like good road network would be built to promote economic growth and trade among communities and neighboring states.

“Youths would be empowered to fend for themselves and improve their welfare and so social vices and crimes like kidnapping, banditry, unknown gunmen, and other forms of criminality will vanish,” he said.

Uzo said that about 18 political parties had fielded candidates for the governorship election, and, urged the electorate to canvass for the success of the election.

“Time is now for all the party faithful to fish for voters so that SDP will come out on top.

“SDP has submitted about 6,068 party agents to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and, expressed optimism that if the election is conducted free and fair, he will win.

Earlier the party chairman, Chinwuba, encouraged the faithful to go back to their wards to preach SDP candidates to their friends and relatives and ensure victory at last.

Chinwuba urged the voters to come out on election day to vote and protect their votes by watching well to avoid exchange of votes by desperate politicians.

Mrs Uche Okpala, the woman leader of SDP, urged the women to come out and vote on the election day as security has been provided.

Okpala advised women to go look up their voters cards and keep them handy for the Nov. 6 election.

Mr Innocent Aroh, a party faithful, said that SDP have provided a good candidate for the election and urged them all not to loose focus.

Aroh said that election 2021 is peculiar and urged voters to stand strong on their belief that Uzo can deliver dividends of democracy to them.

In the same line, Dr Godwin Maduka, Accord party candidate, received over 100 members of APGA from Ogbaru council area of the state.

Dr Chris Opia led the delegation who decamped, citing APGA’s lack of internal democracy and bad leadership.

Opia said that he decided to join Accord because its candidate, Maduka, is God sent, what he has done in his Umuchukwu community as an individual speaks volume.

The election period is at its peak but would be gradually winding down by Thursday, Nov. 4.
