Guinea Bissau closes border with Senegal over community clashes

Guinea Bissau president Umaro Sissoco Embalo has ordered the partial closure of its border with Senegal due to deadly clashes that erupted between two Muslim communities.

Clashes erupted again in the communities A town very close to Guinea Bissau neighbouring

One person died and around 20 others were injured, according to the interior ministry.

President Embalo said that following Monday’s clashes, “one of the communities (had) called in reinforcements” living in Guinea-Bissau.

“I immediately took the decision to close this part of the border to prevent any escalation of violence. My country’s security forces are ensuring that this measure is scrupulously respected,” he added.

    Senegal and Guinea-Bissau share a 300-kilometre (186-mile) border.

Located more than 500 kilometres from Dakar, Medina Gounass hosts an annual 10-day pilgrimage attended by thousands of Muslims.

AFCON 2023: Guinea Bissau coach, Cande speaks on defeating Super Eagles

Baciro Cande the head coach of Guinea-Bissau has said that his side will pit up a good showing when they face Nigeria in the last group A match today at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan

The Djurtus have a slim chance of progressing to the group stage in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, after losing their opening two games of the competition.

After losing two group A matches, the Djurtus presently occupy the last spot on the group.

Guinea-Bissau are also yet to win a game in the history of the AFCON.

The gaffer said his players are highly motivated for the game and will go all out for a win.

“We are excited to play a good match tomorrow,” he told reporters in Abidjan.

“We have one match to close the first phase of the competition and we will do everything to have a good game tomorrow.

“It will be difficult but we will do everything possible tomorrow. We want to have our first AFCON win tomorrow.”

The last group A encounter will see all the teams playing simultaneously by 6pm.

  • AFCON 2023: Peseiro says Nigeria determined to take first place in group A

AFCON 2023: Peseiro says Nigeria determined to take first place in group A

Coach José Santos Peseiro insisted on Sunday that despite looking good for a spot in the Round of 16 with their four points following the defeat of host nation Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday, Nigeria will not take their feet off the pedal when they clash with Guinea Bissau on Monday evening.

“We defeated Cote d’Ivoire, but that is already in the past. We know that in football, what counts is the moment. We must temper our confidence, and put in more work as required. We must not rest.

“We want to take the first place and for that, we must do battle. We must do what is necessary to accomplish our mission tomorrow,” Peseiro said at the pre-match conference at the Palais de la Culture in the Treichville area of Abidjan on Sunday.

Peseiro will lead Nigeria to come face-to-face with the only team to have beaten his Super Eagles in a competitive match since he took the reins of the three-time African champions 20 months ago.

With four points from their first two matches, including a morale-pumping victory over the host nation and one of the favourites, the Eagles are walking with springs in their steps at their Pullman Hotel Abidjan and at their training sessions at the École National de la Police. But Peseiro cautions that the work is not yet done and there is utmost need for level heads.

“We have to forget that we defeated the host nation. There is a lot more work to be done. We want to be here for the long haul,” he told thenff.com after the press conference.

Peseiro won his first two competitive games with the Super Eagles – a 2-1 defeat of Sierra Leone in Abuja and a record-breaking international win of 10—0 against Sao Tome and Principe in Agadir, Morocco in June 2022.

However, the Wild Dogs stepped on Nigeria soil and pipped the Eagles 1-0 in an AFCON 2023 qualifier. Nigeria repaid the compliment a few days later in Bissau, but the Portuguese trainer says the Portuguese-speaking nation still owes him a clapback.

“We are not thinking about revenge but we are here to top the group and they are in our sights. We must do what has to be done. Guinea Bissau have no point and will play with freedom, and that is when a team becomes dangerous.”

Both teams clash at the Stade Félix Houphoüet-Boigny in central Abidjan from 5pm CIV time on Monday, which is 6pm Nigeria time.

In their other competitive games under Peseiro, the Eagles have defeated Sierra Leone 3-2 in Monrovia, beaten Sao Tome and Principe 6-0 in Uyo, drawn 1-1 with Lesotho and Zimbabwe in FIFA World Cup qualifiers and drawn 1-1 with Equatorial Guinea while pipping Cote d’Ivoire 1-0 here at the AFCON.

Monday’s crucial game, which will be Nigeria’s 100th match at the Africa Cup of Nations since a group phase encounter against Egypt in nearby Ghana in 1963, will see the Super Eagles finish top of group A with a win, as long as Equatorial Guinea, also on four points, do not humiliate host nation Cote d’Ivoire at an encounter holding simultaneously at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Ebimpe.

AFCON 2023: Mane speaks on playing against Super Eagles

Carlos Mane of the Djurtus of Guinea Bissau has noted that his side will play for their family and country men against Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

Baciro Cande’s men have endured a poor start at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, losing their opening two games to Cote d’Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea.

After winless run the Djurtus are looking to defeat Nigeria and Play for pride.

The West Africans occupy the bottom spot on the Group A table with zero points.

They will need to beat the Super Eagles to have any chance of progressing to the Round of 16.

“We have zero points in the competition but we have to fight to get a good result. We will go into the game with a strong mentality, we will try to win,” Mane told a press conference in Abidjan on Sunday.

“We know Nigeria very well. They have a good coach (Jose Peseiro) . He was my coach at Sporting Lisbon four years ago.

“It’s going to be difficult to beat Nigeria, but we will play for our country and our family. We will surely make things difficult for them.”

The Eagles secured a 1-0 win over the Elephants with Osimhen emerging as the standout player in the thrilling encounter at the Stade Alassane Ouattara which had 49,517 home crowd.

AFCON 2023: Super Eagles warned against Guinea Bissau

Ebere Amaraizu, a former Board Member and South-East Director, Nationwide League One (NLO), has warned the Super Eagles of Nigeria must be wary of Guinea Bissau.

Amaraizu, who gave the warning on Saturday in Enugu, cautioned that Guinea Bissau “will take on Super Eagles as wounded lions”.

He was predicting a tension soaked match between the Eagles and Guinea Bissau national team on Monday at the ongoing 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

He said the eagles must bring their A-Game to play and never to underrate the Guinea Bissau because they (Guinea) lost  two matches and are already technically out of the tournament.

According to him, Super Eagles must avoid complacency so that the Guineans will use Nigeria to announce their presence in the tournament.

He said: “The last group match between Super Eagles and Guinea Bissau national team is a match that must have to be approached with both technical and tactical prowess.

“Nothing should be left to chance and no stone should be left upturned in its preparations.

“Super Eagles must get their rhythms well without taking anything for granted.

“Guinea Bissau national team will play as wounded lions and if they are not properly tamed, they will fight to make a statement which might be detrimental against Super Eagles.”

Amaraizu, who is the former General Manager of Crime Busters FC, Enugu, who won the 2018 Enugu State Aiteo Cup, said Guinea Bissau national team would be fighting to make a statement that “they are not a total push over.

“So, Super Eagles should expect tough encounter and bearing this in mind they should not count their chicken before they are hatched and avoiding complacency and any form of distractions.

“They should keep fate with the squad that played against Ivory Coast on Thursday.

“The Super Eagles should maintain a formidable midfield that will aid the defence and sharpen the attacking networks which will give them those maximum three points,” he said.

Coup Attempt: Guinea Bissau dissolves Parliament

The Guinea-Bissau president,   Umaro Sissoco Embalo revealed  on Monday that the  parliament  is dissolved ahead of fresh elections saying an “attempted coup” had plunged the West African nation into a new crisis.

President Embalo issued a decree closing down the opposition-dominated parliament and announced that legislative elections would be “set at the opportune moment, in line with the constitution”.

Recall that violence had erupted between members of the National Guard and special forces of the presidential guard on Thursday night in the capital Bissau, leaving two people dead.

Embalo, who was in Dubai attending the COP28 climate conference, arrived back in Bissau on Saturday and announced that an “attempted coup d’etat” had prevented him from returning earlier.

On Monday, he said there had been “complicity” between the National Guard and “certain political interests within the State apparatus”.

That meant “the normal functioning of the institutions of the Republic has become impossible”.

“These facts confirm the existence of a grave political crisis,” he added.

Since gaining independence from Portugal in 1974, the country has seen a series of coups and coup attempts.

Elected to a five-year term in December 2019, Embalo survived a bid to overthrow him in February 2022.

Members of the National Guard had Thursday evening stormed a police station to extract Finance Minister Souleiman Seidi and Treasury Secretary Antonio Monteiro, who were being held for questioning, according to army and intelligence officers.

The guardsmen then took shelter at a military camp in the capital where they held out until Friday.

Calm had returned by noon Friday following an announcement that the army had captured National Guard commander Colonel Victor Tchongo.

The skirmishes are considered the latest flare-up in the deep political divide between the opposition-led government and the presidency.

The National Guard is under the control of the interior ministry, which, like most ministries in the country, is dominated by the PAIGC party whose coalition won the June 2023 elections.

The prosecutor’s office, which ordered the questioning of the two government officials, is controlled by the presidency.

Thursday night unrest an “attempted coup” – Guinea – Bissau president, Embalo

The president of Guinea Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embalo on Saturday declared  that the deadly violence involving members of the National Guard was an “attempted coup” as the army ordered them back to barracks.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the unrest between members of the National Guard and special forces of the presidential guard on Thursday night in the capital Bissau left at least two people dead.

Embalo, who attended the COP28 climate conference, arrived in Bissau on Saturday and said an “attempted coup d’etat” had prevented him from returning.

“I must tell you this act will have serious consequences,” he added.

Embalo said the coup attempt was prepared before celebrations on November 16 commemorating the anniversary of the armed forces.

Since gaining independence from Portugal in 1974, the small West African nation has seen a series of coups and coup attempts.

Embalo, who was elected to a five-year term in December 2019, survived a failed overthrow in February 2022.

A military official, speaking anonymously due to the sensitive nature of the situation, said six soldiers were injured in the fighting and evacuated to neighbouring Senegal.

Calm had returned by noon on Friday to the small nation with a history of instability, following the announcement that the army had captured Colonel Victor Tchongo, commander of the National Guard.

On Saturday the security presence in Bissau was reduced, but soldiers were still visible around certain strategic buildings such as the presidential palace, the judicial police headquarters and some ministries.

Some National Guard officers and soldiers fled into the interior of the country, the army said in a statement Saturday, without specifying numbers.

“The General Staff of the armed forces hereby informs them that they must return to their place of assignment,” the statement continued.

However, regional bloc,  Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) said it “strongly condemns the violence and all attempts to disrupt the constitutional order and rule of law in Guinea-Bissau”.

According to ECOWAS those behind the attack should be brought to book.

“ECOWAS further calls for the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of the incident in accordance with the law,” the Abuja-based organisation added in its statement on Saturday.

The regional bloc also expressed “its full solidarity with the people and constitutional authorities of Guinea-Bissau”.

A spokesman for UN chief Antonio Guterres, Stephane Dujarric, had called Friday for calm and urged the security forces and the army “to continue refraining from interference in national politics”.

Members of the National Guard Thursday evening stormed a police station to extract Finance Minister Souleiman Seidi and Treasury Secretary Antonio Monteiro, according to army and intelligence officers.

The two government members were being questioned about the withdrawal of $10 million from state accounts. They had been detained under orders of state prosecutors, who are named by the president.

Embalo said someone sent Tchongo to remove Seidi from detention and announced that an investigatory commission would be formed on Monday.

The National Guard is under the control of the interior ministry, which, like most ministries in the country, is dominated by the PAIGC party whose coalition won the June 2023 elections.

The two government members were detained again after the army removed them from National Guard control.

Government spokesman Francisco Muniro Conte said Saturday: “We have always opted for the application of the law. A president who is elected must complete his term of office.”

“We cannot obstruct people who are facing justice, if the law is really respected,” he added.
