Nigerian gospel Singer aims to break Guinness World Record

Nigerian gospel artist, Somtochukwu Nsofor, professionally known as Essemm has embarked on a mission to break the Guinness World Record for the longest hours of continuous singing.

Nsofor, while addressing newsmen in Lagos on Sunday, said that the aim was to sing for 128 hours, surpassing the current record of 105 hours, held by Indian singer, Sunil Waghmare.

He said  that it was not just about breaking the record but “seeing Jesus Christ on a global scale.

“I do not think anybody has broken the record talking about Jesus Christ, right? I do not know how I will put it but I know what this is going to do when we break this record, it will be clear that someone, who sang gospel music broke the record. It is about the kingdom, it is a global media impact for the gospel,” he said.

According to him, breaking this record is not just about the hours, it is about using every minute to uplift, inspire, and share the love of Christ with the world. He said he believed that music was a powerful tool to heal and transform lives, and  he wanted the effort to serve as a testament to the strength of faith.

Nsofor said that the motivation was also to create a platform where other gospel artists would be encouraged to achieve whatever they wanted. Nsofor also fondly called Essemm,  started music as a young boy captivated by melodies, he honed his musical talents by learning to play a variety of instruments, including the guitar and piano.

In 2014, Essemm established TWF Concept, a media and management platform, that has become a hub for creative and professional growth in the Nigerian music industry. His production studio has helped local talents refine their craft and share their musical gifts with a wider audience.

Essemm launched the Chronicles Music Concert, an annual event that serves as a platform to spread the message of Jesus Christ, through music and fellowship. The concert has since grown into a platform for other gospel artists to share their music and inspire others.

  • Nigerian woman sets new Guinness World Record

Nigerian woman sets new Guinness World Record

Ewaoluwa Olatunji, who goes by the stage name Ewa Cole aka “Queen of Afro-Solk”, has been awarded the Guinness World Record for the longest marathon singing Christmas songs.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Ewa sang for a total of 31 hours from 27-28 December to become the first holder of this record.

The 29-year-old from Lagos, Nigeria, said she took on the challenge to “promote peace and unity” and to inspire confidence in young people.

“Since childhood, I’ve been preparing for this moment. I was often put on stage to lead and perform at my school’s Christmas carols,” Ewa revealed.

Throughout her record attempt, Ewa sang classic Christmas songs such as “Deck the Halls”, “Frosty the Snowman”, “Silent Night” and numerous others.

She was not allowed to repeat any song within a one-hour period.

Just like all other ‘longest marathon’ record attempts, after every continuous hour of singing, Ewa was permitted a five-minute rest break, which could be accumulated if not taken. These were the only times that she could eat, sleep, or use the bathroom.

The prolonged spells of singing took their toll on Ewa, who battled fatigue, throat pain and stomach problems during her sing-athon.

“The most challenging period for me was between the eighth and 12th hours,” she said.

“I had consumed a drink that caused mild food poisoning symptoms, forcing me to hold in flatulence to avoid public embarrassment.

“I was simultaneously experiencing profuse sweating, stomach, head, and throat aches, along with an urgent need to use the restroom,” she added.

Although she overcame this hurdle, her throat pain then began to worsen, and after 20 hours it had “intensified to an unbearable level”.

“By the 20th hour, I was desperate for a miraculous reprieve,” Ewa admitted.

She considered giving up, but fortunately she was able to persevere through the pain and did not let it affect her ability to sing.

I never once stopped singing, even when I completely lost my voice. I will say that God was absolutely by my side all through.

Ewa, who works as a software engineer and also runs her own clothing brand, says she’s thrilled to have earned this Guinness World Records title and is “still buzzing with excitement”.

Having created her own music genre called “Afro-Solk”, stemmed from the fusion of Afro-pop, soul, and folk music, Ewa is excited to see where her singing career goes from here.

“It’s incredible to consider all the limitless possibilities that lie ahead,” she said.

“I can’t wait to explore and make the most of them!”

  • BREAKING: Guinness World Records finally awards Hilda Baci

BREAKING: Guinness World Records finally awards Hilda Baci

Following a thorough review of all the evidence, Guinness World Records has now confirmed that Hilda Effiong Bassey, better known as Hilda Baci, has officially broken the record for the longest cooking marathon (individual), with a time of 93 hours 11 minutes.

The 26-year-old Nigerian chef began on Thursday 11 May and continued through to Monday 15 May, cooking over 100 pots of food during her four-day kitchen stint.

Hilda attempted to set a record of 100 hours, however, almost seven hours were deducted from her final total because she mistakenly took extra minutes for one of her rest breaks early on in the attempt.

As with all ‘longest marathon’ records, the participant is permitted a five-minute rest break for every continuous hour of activity. These rest breaks can be accumulated if not taken. They were the only times Hilda could use the bathroom or sleep during the attempt.

The previous record of 87 hours 45 minutes was set by Lata Tondon (India) in 2019.

Hilda attempted this record to “put Nigerian cuisine on the map” and “to inspire young African women to chase their dreams.”

“I also decided to break this record to truly push my limits and test my abilities,” she added.

Hilda prepared for the event by creating a 35-item menu “as a guide” for every meal that she would cook.

She ensured that she had the necessary ingredients to make each recipe, with her team procuring further food items while the cook-a-thon was underway “based on what was needed to be topped up.”

Hilda’s record attempt took the world of social media by storm, with millions in Nigeria and beyond following her progress via an Instagram live stream.

Hilda’s cook-a-thon was in fact so popular that our website crashed for two days due to the immense volume of traffic we received from her legion of loyal fans.

Several high-profile Nigerian figures visited Hilda to support her during her record attempt, such as the Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu; and award-winning singer Tiwa Savage.

Hilda was required to abide by several rules during her record-breaking cook-a-thon:

There must be at least two items being prepared or cooked at any time
A sous-chef is permitted to assist in prep work, washing up, and cleaning the kitchen area, but all the cooking must be done by the individual attempting the record
One of the most important rules of our food-related record attempts is that all items must be consumed after cooking. To this end, Hilda invited any and all members of the Nigerian public to come and eat her freshly made meals. All leftover food was donated to the Festus Fajemilo Foundation.
