BREAKING: Police, local hunters waste four suspected kidnappers in Abraka, recover AK-47 rifle(Photos)

In a major security breakthrough, a joint team of the Nigeria Police Force and local security groups has neutralized four suspected kidnappers during a daring early-morning operation in Abraka, Delta State.

The coordinated raid, carried out at approximately 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday, was the result of actionable intelligence regarding the activities of a notorious kidnapping syndicate operating along the Abraka railway axis.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Police Command, SP Edale Bright, the operation involved officers from the Abraka Police Patrol Team working in synergy with local hunters, vigilantes, and anti-cult volunteers.

The team engaged the suspected kidnappers in a fierce gun battle, which resulted in the death of four suspects. Others reportedly fled the scene with gunshot wounds.

During the operation, operatives recovered an AK-47 rifle and 13 rounds of live ammunition from the scene.

A preliminary investigation has linked one of the deceased suspects to a recent abduction case. The victim, who was rescued shortly before the operation, positively identified the suspect as the leader of the gang responsible for his kidnapping.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, commended the bravery and coordination of the operatives involved. He urged them to sustain the momentum and reiterated the Command’s commitment to strengthening community-police partnerships in the ongoing fight against crime.

CP Olufemi also called on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious activities. The public can reach the Command’s control room through the following emergency numbers: 08036684974, 08114895600, and 08025666914.

Brussels shooting: Suspected gunman who killed two Swedes dies after being shot by police – Report

A 45-year-old Tunisian suspected of killing two Swedish football fans in Brussels has died after being shot by police in a cafe on Tuesday, Belgian media said.

The man, who was shot in the chest, died in hospital from his wounds, media said.

There was no immediate official confirmation of his death.

The shooting comes at a time of heightened security concerns in some European countries linked to the Israeli-Hamas conflict, though a Belgian federal prosecutor said there was no evidence that the attacker had any link to the recently renewed conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants.

Belgian Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden said earlier the wounded man was suspected of being the gunman.

She also said she could not rule out that he had had accomplices.

Two Swedish nationals were shot dead and a third one was wounded in central Brussels on Monday night a man who identified himself as a member of the Islamic State claimed responsibility in a video posted online.

The suspect fled the scene after the shooting as a football match between Belgium and Sweden was about to start, triggering a massive manhunt and prompting Belgium to raise its terror alert to the highest level.

“The weapon with which the attacks were committed has been found this morning where the man was apprehended in (the Brussels borough of) Schaerbeek.

“That makes the likelihood that the perpetrator has been caught bigger,” Verlinden told VRT broadcaster.

“We are checking fingerprints to be 100 per cent sure.”

Federal prosecutors said they could not yet confirm the identity of the person shot but the Belgian capital’s mayor Philippe Close told BFM TV: “It seems indeed the suspect has been neutralised.”

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo called Monday’s shooting a brutal “terrorist attack”.

“Last night three people left for what was supposed to be a wonderful soccer party. Two of them lost their lives in a brutal terrorist attack,” De Croo told a news conference.

“The perpetrator targeted specifically Swedish supporters who were in Brussels to attend a Red Devils soccer match. Two Swedish compatriots passed away. A third person is recovering from severe injuries,” de Croo said.

Belgium was hosting Sweden in a Euro 2024 qualifying match on Monday evening. The match was abandoned at halftime.

The country has raised the security alert status of its capital city to the highest level, with increased police presence, particularly for Swedish people and institutions, and warned the public to be extra vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel.

A man who identified himself as a member of Islamic State claimed responsibility in a video posted online.

The attacker, who unsuccessfully sought asylum in Belgium in November 2019, was known to police in connection with people smuggling, Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne told a news conference.

Sweden’s Sapo security police, who in August raised their terrorism alert to the second-highest level and warned of an increase in threats against Swedes at home and abroad, said they were in contact with their international counterparts.

“We are in a serious situation … Sweden has (over time) ended up in an increasingly clear focus of violent Islamist extremism,” a Sapo spokesperson said in a statement.

The suspected gunman, calling himself Abdesalem Al Guilani, claimed in a video on social media that he was a fighter for Allah.

Video footage of the attack posted on the Het Laatste Nieuws newspaper website showed a man in an orange jacket on a scooter at a street intersection with a rifle first firing five shots, then following people fleeing into a building before firing again.

The newspaper said on Tuesday that police were looking for an accomplice who filmed the attack.

According to a media transcript of the video message recorded by the self-declared perpetrator, he said he had killed Swedes to take revenge in the name of Muslims.

The European Commission, which is based in Brussels, has urged staff to work from home. Some schools were closed.

Belgium has been the target of several Islamist attacks over recent years, the deadliest being the 2016 attack on Brussels airport and the city’s metro, in which 32 people died.

Several of the Islamist gunmen who targeted Paris in a 2015 attack that killed 130 people were Belgian or living in Brussels.

Gunman storms Brazil school, kills one, injures another

A gunman stormed a school in Brazil and opened fire killing one student and leaving one severely injured before being arrested by police operatives in the country,

It was gathered that the gunman is an old student of the school located in Southern Brazil.

The ex-student arrived at the school in the Londrina metropolitan area saying he needed a transcript, but took out a gun once inside and began shooting, said authorities in the state of Parana.

Brazilian media reports said the shooter was 21.

A 16 year old female student was killed, and a male student taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, the state security ministry said in a statement, adding that the attacker had been detained.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed “sadness and outrage” at the attack.

“Another young life taken away by hate and violence, something we can no longer tolerate in our schools or our society,” he wrote on Twitter.

Brazil, where school attacks were once a rarity, has seen an increase in such assaults recently.

In April, an attacker killed four young children with a hatchet at a school and daycare center in the southern city of Blumenau.

That incident shocked the nation and prompted the Lula administration to announce a series of measures to increase security at schools and tackle content seen as promoting school violence on social media.

Brazil’s deadliest school shooting was in 2011, when a man opened fire at his former elementary school in Realengo, outside Rio de Janeiro, killing 12 children and then himself.

Gunman commits suicide after killing 9 in school shooting

Russian officials on Monday reported that a gunman killed nine people, including five children at a school in Russia before committing suicide.

The motive for the shooting in Izhevsk, capital of the Udmurtia region about 970 km (600 miles) east of Moscow, was unclear.

The Udmurtia branch of the interior ministry said the body of the gunman was discovered by police at the scene.

Russia’s Investigative Committee said the attacker had killed nine people before committing suicide.

The victims included five children, two teachers and two security guards, it said.

Russia has seen several school shootings in recent years.

In May 2021, a teenage gunman killed seven children and two adults in the city of Kazan.

In April 2022, an armed man killed two children and a teacher at a kindergarten in the central Ulyanovsk region before committing suicide.

Gunman kills 3 tenants, set fire to lure them

A gunman, who shot five other tenants and set fire to a house to lure them out, has been fatally shot by police officers.

It was gathered that the gunman was evicted from a Houston apartment building and shot five other tenants, killing three of them, Sunday morning after setting fire to the house to lure them out, police said.

The incident happened at about 1 a.m. Sunday in a mixed industrial-residential neighborhood in southwest Houston.

Police and fire crews responded to the apartment house after reports of the fire, police Chief Troy Finner said.

The gunman opened fire, possibly with a shotgun, on the other tenants as they emerged from the house, Finner said. Two were dead at the scene, and one died at a hospital. Fire teams rescued two other wounded men, who were hospitalized with non-life-threatening wounds, he said.

The man then opened fire as the firefighters battled the fire, forcing them to take cover until police officers spotted the prone gunman and shot him dead, Finner said.

No identities have been released, and Finner said no firefighters or officers were wounded.

“I’ve seen things I have not seen before in 32 years, and it has happened time and time again,” Finner said. “We just ask that the community come together.”

A neighbor, Robin Ahrens, exolained that he heard what he initially thought were fireworks as he prepared for work.

“I’m just fortunate that I didn’t go outside because he probably would have shot me too,” he stated.

He said the shooter, who had colon cancer, was behind on his rent, jobless and was recently notified that he was being evicted.

“Something must have just hit him in the last couple of days really hard to where he just didn’t care. And that’s why he did what he did. … Nothing else you can really do when you are at that point,” Ahrens added.

The lawmaker also shared photos of the foiled attack.

Salame, a former Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, is a 2023 governorship aspirant.

“This attack is not the first time. It has been done to the people who stand because the society is facing this kind of challenge”, a supporter, Bilal Goronyo wrote on Facebook.
