    Buhari, Obasanjo congratulate Zambian President-elect, Hakainde Hichilema

    President Muhammdu Buhari has applauded the people of Zambia who came out in their numbers to exercise their civic rights, voting candidates of their choice, signposting that the prospect of a united, stable and prosperous Africa lies in the power of the people to freely elect their leaders.
    This was contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media Publicity, Femi Adesina
    President Buhari commends President Edgar Lungu for accepting the outcome of the election and a peaceful transfer of power, noting that this patriotic disposition deserves the praise of all lovers of democracy.
    Highlighting the close and historic relationship between Nigeria and Zambia, the Nigerian leader looks forward to working very closely with the Zambian President-elect for the peace, development and prosperity of both nations.
    Also, former Nigerian President and former Chairman of the African Union (AU), Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Monday, congratulated the newly elected President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema after his victory in the general election at the weekend.
    In a release by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, on Monday, Obasanjo commended the people of the country for keeping democracy alive, disclosing the reports reaching him of the election was satisfactory.
    He congratulated the new President, even as he urged that Hichilema should be magnanimous in victory.
    According to him, I want to congratulate the newly elected President, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema for his victory and also I want to congratulate the outgoing President for working hard to maintain the tenets of democracy by conceding, when result is cleared that Hichilema won.
    “I also congratulate the people of Zambia for keeping democracy alive. I appeal to the new President to be magnanimous in victory and the people of Zambia should maintain the dignity and peace which we are all noted for in Africa.
    “Zambia must break the circle of previous President being disgraced, by inhumanly treated by succeeding President,” he said.

    Zambia poll: President Lungu concedes defeat, congratulates long term rival

    Zambia’s outgoing leader Edgar Lungu on Monday conceded defeat and congratulated his successor and longtime rival Hakainde Hichilema, who scored a landslide victory in a bitterly contested presidential election.

    “I would therefore like to congratulate my brother… Hichilema for becoming the seventh republican president,” he said in a radio address.

    Lungu promised to comply with the “constitutional provision for a peaceful transition of power”.

    The 64-year-old, who came to power in 2015, said that when he had to serve out the term of his predecessor Michael Sata who died in office, that victory had been “unexpected” and he “accepted it with humility and gratitude”.

    “I want to thank you, Zambian people, for giving me a great opportunity to be your president. I will forever cherish and appreciate the authority you invested in me.”

    “All I wanted to do was to serve my country to the best of my abilities,” he said, admitting that there are “challenges on the way”.
