Late Ziyech strike gives Chelsea victory at Crystal Palace

Chelsea snatched a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday, courtesy of Hakim Ziyech’s strike as the newly crowned world champions returned to winning ways in the English Premier League (EPL).

The hard-fought win for the Blues was coming after nearly a month’s absence in the EPL.

Ziyech kept his eye on a looping cross by substitute Marcos Alonso and calmly side-footed in the volley at the far post in the 89th minute to give Chelsea the win that they had looked unlikely to claim for much of the match.

Palace limited the visitors to only a handful of opportunities including a 35-yard pile-driver shot by centre-half Antonio Rudiger in the 11th minute that Vicente Guaita palmed away acrobatically.

The hosts had their own chances with Wilfried Zaha and Michael Olise coming close to breaking the deadlock as Palace sought to catch the visitors on the counter-attack.

Chelsea, who last weekend won the FIFA World Club Cup and next weekend face Liverpool in the League Cup final, have struggled to get the best out of record signing Romelu Lukaku and he mostly cut a lonely figure once again.

The win left Chelsea seven points behind second-placed Liverpool who beat Norwich City and 13 points behind league leaders Manchester City who play Tottenham Hotspur later on Saturday, while Palace sit in 13th place.

Tuchel breaks down Hakim Ziyech after Atletico win

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was delighted with the performance of Hakim Ziyech for their Champions League win against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.

Ziyech struck in the 2-0 win as Chelsea qualified for the quarter-finals 3-0 on aggregate. Afterwards, Tuchel explained his decision to start with Ziyech and what he instructed the midfielder ahead of kickoff.

Tuchel also detailed what he wants from Ziyech and where he believes the Morocco international can improve.

The Chelsea boss said: “He played for that reason, he did it with Ajax so we chose him for that, he has good experience in the round of 16, he knows how it feels to arrive in the knockout round and to go through the last eight.

“The first reason he deserves it, this was the second and the third, we missed Mason Mount, we wanted to replace the intensity and work-rate with Hakim

“We faced a midfield of three with a lot of quality and we wanted three midfielders minimum against the ball to give reliable work-rate into this team, this is what he always does.

“He suffers a little bit with our style, he needs to adapt to the structure and be more reliable with the ball and he needs to find a better rhythm when to taking risks and not to take risks but I am super happy, this is reliable from him

“He is a hard-working guy upfront and I am happy that he could finish the transition with Kai and Timo, the three were all involved and it was a nice and decisive goal.”

World class Ziyech driving me forward – Mount

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount is full of praise for Hakim Ziyech after the pair helped achieve victory over Sheffield United.

Chelsea have scored at least three goals in all four games Ziyech has started since injury delayed his admission to the side.

England midfielder Mason Mount gushed: “He’s a brilliant player. He knows what he can bring to the team with his quality left foot.

“The gaffer always speaks about having the competition to keep our standards high, and Hakim is a world-class player. We want players of that calibre coming in.

“To have 14 different scorers has been brilliant. We need that threat from set-pieces, which I don’t think we really had last season.

“This season we’ve definitely worked on that and it’s been working and to have that many scorers gives us a different dimension to our game and teams definitely fear us more.”

  • Ziyech can replace Hazard at Chelsea – Lampard

Ziyech can replace Hazard at Chelsea – Lampard

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard believes Hakim Ziyech is the man to replace Eden Hazard.

Chelsea lost their chief creator in Hazard when he left for Real Madrid in 2019, while they also saw key players Pedro and Willian leave this summer.

Ziyech could be introduced to the Premier League today at Turf Moor where Burnley and their low block defence will be awaiting the £36m playmaker signed from Ajax.

“We had Pedro last season and Willian was a huge player,” said Lampard. “The year before that we had Eden Hazard. Those sort of players don’t get replaced on a whim.

“With Hakim we had the potential to bring in someone with really different qualities to what we’ve had in recent years in terms of a left-footed, right-sided player, which was his main position position at Ajax.

“I know he played in a No 10 role and he can definitely do that for us if we want to play that way.

“But he does it in a way that he is very much about opening up chances for others with his crossing ability and final pass.

“He’s not necessarily a winger who is going to fly past players all the time, albeit that is in his game. He can find a pass.

“Sometimes last season I felt we lacked that option when we were playing against low-block defences.”

UCL: Ziyech scores first goal in Chelsea win

Hakim Ziyech scored his first Chelsea goal as Frank Lampard’s side picked up three points in an emphatic Champions League win in Russia.

Ziyech, 27, swept in on his first start for the club to add to goals from Callum Hudson-Odoi, Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic as Chelsea returned to goalscoring ways in style.

Back-to-back goalless draws had signalled that Lampard had made strides in sorting out his side’s defence, and while they will face tougher opposition than Russian new boys Krasnodar, the manager will be delighted that his attacking riches also kicked into gear after midfielder Jorginho had missed an early penalty.

Four points from two games is a solid start to their Champions League campaign and despite their run of draws Chelsea have now lost just once in 10 games this term.

EPL: Ziyech mixed emotions after Chelsea debut

Chelsea midfielder Hakim Ziyech had mixed emotions after making his debut in Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Southampton.

Ziyech was happy to see action, but frustrated with the result.

He told chelseafc.com: “I was very happy about it (his debut), but it wasn’t the debut we all hoped for.

“In the first-half we began well, two big chances and we went up two zero. But then a little disappointing they scored before halftime.

“Then obviously 2-2, then 3-2, then they scored in the last minute and that’s not something you can be happy about.”

Ziyech continued, “Of course, it will take time (to adapt). But we don’t have time because the games are coming really quick. So we have to learn quick. But this can’t happen. A last minute goal, it can’t happen.”

Chelsea midfielder Hakim Ziyech could be ready to make his bow for the club.

The former Ajax man has not been able to grace the Premier League due to an issue with his knee.

Now he is on the mend and back in training with his teammates.

Ziyech could be involved in their coming games, as manager Frank Lampard also said he was close to a return to full fitness.

The player posted a training picture on his Instagram account, along with a message that read “Step by step,” accompanied with an hourglass emoji.

Hakim Ziyech injured on Chelsea debut

Chelsea midfielder Hakim Ziyech has broken down on his debut.

The Daily Express says Ziyech was forced off the field with injury at the Amex Stadium as the Blues took on Brighton.

Frank Lampard gave Chelsea fans a glimpse of their new-look exciting attack as the former Ajax man started alongside fellow new boy Timo Werner. Ziyech’s afternoon was cut short in the second half though when he appeared to pick up an ankle knock.

The No 22 went to the ground before receiving treatment from Chelsea’s medical staff.

It was then decided that he would not continue as he left the field of play.

Chelsea went ahead thanks to Werner early on before Willy Caballero saved a Neal Maupay penalty.

The Blues get their Premier League campaign underway against the Seagulls on September 14.

Chelsea signing Werner perfect for Ziyech – Mulder

Schalke hero Youri Mulder has hailed Chelsea’s deal for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

Mulder says Werner will be the ideal foil for Ajax midfielder Hakim Ziyech, who is also on his way to Chelsea this summer.

“He’s the ideal player for Ziyech,” Mulder said on Ziggo Sport.

“In that regard, Chelsea has done well. Werner comes a bit from the left side and goes deep.

“Ziyech can turn in from the right and can hit passes with his great left foot to Werner.”
