Chelsea boss Tuchel warns Werner, Havertz

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel admits German duo Timo Werner and Kai Havertz are playing for their futures at the club.

Both players have failed to set the world on fire since arriving from Bundesliga for big money last summer.

And Tuchel says the club must start to see a return on their significant investment.

He said: “They have a lot of potential, at the same time the club demands a lot of them and I can understand.

“We spent a lot of money, they spent a lot of money, it is time to step up and fight for it.”

Tuchel added he has faith that both players can succeed at Stamford Bridge.

“They fit into any plans of any manager because they have strong potential, strong talent and it is obvious,” Tuchel continued.

“I think, first of all, they did a brave decision to go abroad to jump out of their comfort zone.

“Timo was the top guy in Leipzig, Kai was the top, go-to guy in Leverkusen. To jump abroad to go to the most demanding league in Europe, to go to a club like Chelsea where people demand results, where people demand, expect even, titles if possible. It is a huge step out of your comfort zone.

“So, first of all, I talked to them. I like this decision because stepping out of your comfort zone creates energy and gives you energy and maybe makes you uncomfortable and this is maybe exactly what you need to reach the next level.

“You have maybe experienced weeks and days where you doubt it and you were not happy, but this is the process of change and when you want to grow as players and when you want to leave your footprints, this is a strong, strong decision. Let’s walk the talk.

“I will try to help you. I will try to push you I will try to guide you and be at your side and support when needed.

“Of course maybe it has been a bit easier because I am German and they are German – but in the end it’s like any player, they need confidence, they need trust, an honest approach. Sometimes they need the truth from you – even if they don’t like it.”

Havertz can emulate De Bruyne, Salah – Lampard

Frank Lampard has defended Kai Havertz over criticism that he looked like he was ‘not bothered’ during Chelsea’s recent 2-0 defeat to Leicester City.

Ahead of an FA Cup clash with Luton, Lampard has hit out at critics of Havertz’s work rate.

“I can officially say from working with Kai that desire is absolutely not part of the issue. Is he as confident right now, at this minute, as he can be or will be? No, because he is having a tough moment, as are other members of the squad,” Lampard told reporters.

“Kevin De Bruyne and Mo Salah are players who were here at a similar age to Kai. They went away and took time and came back, and now they are absolute Premier League legends.

“I don’t want to build Kai up and put that pressure on his shoulders, but there clearly has to be a time with young players who come to this league, where people have to give them time, patience and sometimes a little bit of wriggle room.

“It’s not that everything will just happen in a few months or in one performance.

  • Ziyech a problem for Havertz at Chelsea – Leverkusen coach

Ziyech a problem for Havertz at Chelsea – Leverkusen coach

Bayer Leverkusen coach Peter Bosz says the presence of Hakim Ziyech is a problem for Kai Havertz.

The midfielder, who cost £72million to sign from the Bundesliga side, has struggled to make an impact at the London side.

Speaking to VI, the 57-year-old Bosz said: “Havertz’s greatest quality lies in the opponent’s box.

“There he has to come to score goals. At Chelsea, he now also plays further back, because Hakim Ziyech pushes him away.

“Then Havertz does not get enough into the penalty area.”

Chelsea signed Ziyech from Ajax last February, the season after helping his side reach the Champions League semi-finals.

But the forward has faced struggles of his own, picking up a knee injury in pre-season and scoring just two goals in 14 appearances.

The situation at Stamford Bridge has seen reports emerge that Havertz is privately regretting his decision to leave Leverkusen.

  • What Gundogan told Chelsea fans about Havertz, Werner

What Gundogan told Chelsea fans about Havertz, Werner

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is adamant Chelsea’s German pair Kai Havertz and Timo Werner will come good.

Chelsea are yet to see the best of the Germany internationals since spending £142million on the Bundesliga pair in the summer, and countryman Gundogan believes that their gradual adaptation to the Premier League is “normal”.

Discussing Chelsea ahead of City’s trip to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, Gundogan told Sky Sports: “They have two new German players who have tried to adapt as well as possible.

“In general, I think it’s not easy to adapt quickly to the Premier League when you come from a different country and now, with the situation going on, I think it’s just even harder.

“So I think it’s quite normal that they are struggling a little bit, but they both have incredible talent and I’m sure they will both be able to prove it in this league.”

Gundogan feels that Blues boss Frank Lampard invested his ample financial resources wisely in the close season and has built a squad that will challenge for the title.

He said: “Like every year, Chelsea have a great squad with incredible players.

“They got some really talented young recruits in the summer, spent a lot of money and got some really good players so I think they will do well.

“They are also a team that struggles like everyone does but they have a lot of quality and it’s going to be a great game on Sunday.”

  • Havertz regrets choosing boring Chelsea over Bayern

Havertz regrets choosing boring Chelsea over Bayern

Chelsea star Kai Havertz is regretting his move from Bayer Leverkusen to Stamford Bridge this season.

That’s according to BILD columnist Raimund Hinko.

Havertz, just like other major signings like Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, has yet to shine at Stamford Bridge and that has led to some intense speculation in Germany.

Hinko believes Havertz may be regretting turning down Bayern Munich for Chelsea last summer.

Hinko wrote: “Kai Havertz, even if he doesn’t trumpet it out loud, will have cursed it a hundred times that he switched from [Bayer] Leverkusen to the midfield of boring club FC Chelsea and followed the call of the money.

“Havertz will have bitten his ass often enough not to reciprocate Bayern’s interest more violently as long as coach Hansi Flick was still interested in him.”

  • Leboeuf slams Havertz: Chelsea’s £70m star is almost invisible

Leboeuf slams Havertz: Chelsea’s £70m star is almost invisible

Frank Leboeuf has slammed Kai Havertz for his poor start to life at Chelsea, insisting the £70 million ($61m) midfielder is “almost invisible” on the pitch.

Chelsea beat off competition from a whole host of top European clubs to bring Havertz to Stamford Bridge from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer transfer window.

The Blues tied the 21-year-old, who became one of the top players in the Bundesliga during his time at BayArena, down to a five-year contract after forking out a lofty fee for his services, and Frank Lampard has wasted no time in testing his skills in west London.

Leboeuf does not believe that a big-money signing has shown any indication of living up to his price tag as of yet, and has suggested that he should have adjusted to his new surroundings by now.

Asked to assess Havertz’s performance at Wolves, the former Chelsea defender told ESPN: “Almost invisible. I touched on the point some weeks ago. We heard Frank Lampard say, ‘no, we need to give him time’.

“But I don’t know, it’s something that I don’t like, the way sometimes it feels like he’s not there, that he’s not trying to compensate for a lack of confidence with a desire or just being a warrior, showing us that, ‘okay, I’m not good at the moment, but I’m going to fight for the club and not be invisible.’

“We share texts during the game and we were wondering if he was on the field. You can be bad – [Timo] Werner didn’t have a good game – but we saw him trying to get something going.

“We don’t see Havertz getting anything. I’m very concerned about that guy.

  • Havertz, Mount not ready to carry Chelsea to title challenge – Scholes

Havertz, Mount not ready to carry Chelsea to title challenge – Scholes

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says defeat against Wolves is proof Chelsea are not ready to be title challengers.

Scholes believes Chelsea’s lack of midfield creativity showed in slumping 1-0 at Everton on Saturday and 2-1 at Wolves on Tuesday night.

He said, “I think there is a lack of creativity in the middle of the pitch.

“(N’Golo) Kante you know what he’s going to do, but the two next to him are young – Mount and Havertz.

“They will be fantastic but I think that’s why they won’t win the league this year. They’re not quite ready.

“In the middle of the pitch, I think they’ve got the players they just need time. Mount, I’m really impressed by.

“In years to come he’ll be winning games for Chelsea and scoring goals just like Frank (Lampard) did.”

  • Werner presence key to choosing Chelsea – Havertz

Werner presence key to choosing Chelsea – Havertz

Chelsea midfielder Kai Havertz admits Timo Werner pushed him to make the move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

The 21-year-old Germany midfielder joined in a £72million move from Bayer Leverkusen during the summer transfer window – following in the footsteps of his compatriot Werner.

Asked whether it helped that 24-year-old Werner was already at Chelsea, Havertz said: “It helped a lot. We know each other well from the national team.

“We’ve always been big friends. When I got the news that he would change [clubs] of course we messaged like every day.

“He always said to me, ‘Come, come [to Chelsea]!’ It was like every day.”

Havertz said it was a bonus that there were other German-speaking players already at the club.

Antonio Rudiger is a fellow German international, while Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic can also speak the language, as can Christian Pulisic, who came through Borussia Dortmund’s youth ranks.

“Of course it’s easier for me to have some German-speaking players here,” Havertz added on Chelsea’s YouTube channel.

“We have Timo, Toni Rudiger and Pulisic and Kovacic can also speak German which is good for me.

“But I can speak English as well so I have a good relationship with every player – but of course me and Timo are big friends and it was very important for me that he made the step and I made it too.”

  • Kai Havertz explains decision to join Chelsea

Kai Havertz explains decision to join Chelsea

Kai Havertz has explained his decision to join Chelsea in the summer transfer window, insisting “it was important to have a club with a vision”.

Havertz emerged as one of the most sought-after talents in Europe following a superb 2019-20 campaign at Bayer Leverkusen.

The 21-year-old helped Leverkusen finish fifth in the Bundesliga and reach the DFB-Pokal final, as well as the Europa League quarter-finals, scoring 18 goals in 45 appearances in all competitions.

The Germany international has now revealed why he chose to continue his development at Chelsea amid interest from a number of other top clubs, telling Sport Bild: “To me, it was important to have a club with a vision.

“The club is on the move. We are a young team with a lot of great players. We think aggressively.

“We want to build something here and attack. This motivates me. And then, a title with Chelsea is just worth more.

“A transfer like this doesn’t happen overnight. I had to go through all options and things which are important to me. I was watching a lot of Premier League on TV anyhow and knew Chelsea really well.”

  • Chelsea at loggerheads with Leverkusen over Havertz valuation

Chelsea at loggerheads with Leverkusen over Havertz valuation

Chelsea are arguing with Bayer Leverkusen over their valuation of Kai Havertz.

Frank Lampard wants to sign the talented 21-year-old midfielder after completing a deal for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

Bayer want at least £90m for the wunderkind, but the Express says the Blues think £75m is a fair price for the Germany international.

This could pave the way for Liverpool to swoop in, with Jurgen Klopp interested in recruiting Havertz as he looks to build a dynasty at Anfield.

Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona are also monitoring the situation.
