Tinubu’s statement on Buhari not sincere- Group

A group, National Forum of Democrats has described as insincere, comments by the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Ahmed Tinubu, over the health challenges of President Muhammadu Buhari saying the words are merely placatory but lack emotional depth.

Tinubu in his comment on President Buhari’s return to the UK, dismissed apprehensions about the President’s health and warned against what he called mutterings which he said could lead to the derailment of the President’s progressive agenda.

He also affirmed that the country was in good shape as he charged anxious Nigerians to trust the President, who, he said, they gave the mandate to govern, to also make good decisions concerning his personal health.

But the NFD said it is not impressed by the muttering of Tinubu only when the president chose to travel and asked the APC national leader to apologise to President Muhamad Buhari over his other comments before he can be taken seriously.

The group in a statement by its president, Alhaji Gambo Dambatta demanded an apology from the APC within 48 hours saying that is the only way he can convince those he had hurt through his previous comments and actions, that he has truly repented.

The NFD said Nigerians have not forgotten how only recently, the former Lagos governor had indicated interest in running as president of the country in 2019 at a time the current president was being treated abroad only for him to amend the comment on realizing his mistake later by saying he will contest only if Buhari is not contesting.

NFD said the nation is also not fooled by the comments of Chief Bisi Akande, to the effect that the president’s health has worsened and that he deserves prayers from Nigerians.

The group said the voice is definitely that of Jacob but the hands were that of Esau and insisted that an apology is required to demonstrate genuine repentance.

“Instead of thinking that he can take the whole country for a ride, the APC leader should do the needful by apologizing to the President and Nigerians before he can be taken seriously.

“His last statement on Buhari is just a smokescreen to cover his retreat and surrender approach.

“We will welcome the repentance and wish he is able to move it a step forward with a mass solidarity rally for the President as was done against him under his watchful eyes.”

…condoles with the govt and people of Kano State over the passing away of their illustrious son, Alhaji Audu Adahama

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday assured patriotic Nigerians that have been organizing prayer sessions on his behalf concerning his health challenges that their prayers have been answered as he now feels much better and more energized to move the country to greater heights.

Buhari said this when he paid a condolence visit to the family of late prominent Kano businessman and community leader, Alhaji Audu Adahama on Saturday.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in a statement issued in Abuja, said the President’s condolence message was delivered by the Minister of Interior, Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd).

He added that late Adahama had paid “his dues in full to his community, the Customs which he served with diligence and the country as a loyal and dutiful citizen’’.

The President also used the opportunity to thank the people of Kano State for their profuse prayers and good wishes in the period he was away receiving treatment.

“Allah has accepted your prayers and we are thankful to you for joining other Nigerians in saying those prayers for me and the nation.

Disclose your health status or face legal action – Group tells Buhari

The Foundation for Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Crusade, FHRACC, has threatened to institute legal action against President Muhammadu Buhari if he fails to declare his health status, as well as the amount he spent to treat himself in the United Kingdom.

FHRACC National President, Alaowei Ebikonbowei handed down the threat in a statement on Saturday.

He stated that the refusal of the Government to disclose the money spent on the President’s health was the greatest disservice to Nigerians.

The stated that concealing such vital information from the public was “corruption” itself, noting that President Buhari was under obligation, both in law and under all known conventional practices to be accountable to the people who gave him their mandate.

“We believed that there is no security threat for Buhari to declare his health to Nigerians and or furnish us with the money he has spent on his health.

“Concealing such vital information from the prying public is to say the least corruption itself.

If security should be an excuse from disclosing public money the Government has spent on public servants, then the law can also preclude public office holders from declaring their assets as required by the Code of Conduct Bureau Act.
“The Government cannot be flouting the relevant provisions of the laws of the land, especially the Freedom of Information Act and the 1999 Constitution.

We are calling on the Government to do what is right in the eyes of the law, otherwise we may take some necessary legal steps to compel it to do the right thing.

“President Buhari sworn an oath to protect the laws of the land and not to breach them with impunity.

It’s for public good, public safety and public morality that Mr President informs Nigerians of the details of his health and how much he has spent to treat himself.

This is the demonstration of the Government’s sincerity in upholding its much chorused “Change Must Begin With Me”, a new national orientation that it has introduced to Nigerians”, he said.

Women engaging in sex before 18 at greater risk of cervical cancer – Commissioner

The Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Kunden Deyin says research has shown that women who engage in active sex before age of 18 are more prone to cervical cancer.

Deyin told newsmen on Tuesday in Jos that such case could occur because the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) easily infected a young woman’s cervix due to premature cells in the cervix.

“HPV is an infection that can be sexually transmitted and some of the viruses can cause cells in the cervix to mutate.

“Once mutation occurs, the cell repairing mechanism either repairs the damage or kills the abnormal cell.

“In rare cases, this cell may proliferate and create more abnormal cells giving rise to cancer.

“This is because most cases of cervical cancer are caused by certain strains of the HPV which spread through sexual contact,’’ he explained.

According to the commissioner, HPV spreads via unprotected sexual intercourse.

He listed two types of HPV that had the highest risk of causing cervical cancer as the HPV16 and HPV18.

Deyin said women who had multiple sexual partners also had increased risk of developing cervical cancer.

“Women, who have multiple sex partners, are at greater risk of developing cancer of the cervix,’’ he said.

The commissioner said routine pap testing was the best way to detect abnormal changes to the cervix before they developed into cancer.

He advised people to desist from reckless life styles and behaviours that could predispose them to various forms of cancer.

He also advised the people to conduct routine medical tests for early detection and management of cancer.

FG laments lack of engineers for cancer machines repairs

The Federal Government has decried the lack of biomedical engineering companies to fix broken cancer treatment machines in the country.

Dr Ramatu Hassan, National Coordinator, National Control Programme, Federal Ministry of Health made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja

She said the country lacked biomedical engineering companies with service centres where spare parts and appropriate personnel are readily available for the repairs and maintenance of the machines.

“If we can have private sector participation it would greatly assist government to move forward and crash the cancer indices in the country,’’ she said

She said that the ministry had also set up a high powered committee chaired by the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, to resuscitate and establish more cancer treatment centres.

Hassan said the ministry is working in collaboration with the World Bank and International Committee of the Red Cross to provide additional machines to boost and develop Cancer centres in the country.

According to her, seven of the Cancer centres would come up this year while additional seven will become functional in 2018.

She added that the ministry was also partnering the International Atomic Energy Agency for technical support for the proposed cancer centres of excellence.

The Coordinator said most of the radiation centres in the country are presently not working.

She said the centre at Usman Danfodio University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto was the only one working, adding that the hydro linear accelerator at the National Hospital Abuja would soon commence operation.

NAN reports that government would upgrade the cancer treatment centres in Maiduguri, Zaria, Ilorin, Abuja National Hospital, Ibadan, Benin and Enugu and equip them with two functional machines in the first phase of the programme.

On the establishment of the National Cancer Control Agency, the national coordinator said it is on-going and the ministry is at the planning stage for the Agency.

“While planning for the Agency, we have to carefully put in place the correct framework that will allow the agency work effectively.

“We are planning because the agency has not been in existence at all and none of its kind has existed within the country before.

“We have to network with some few countries that have similar agency and modify it to reflect our domestic needs,’’ she said.

It will be recalled that Project Pink Blue (PPB), an NGO, and other stakeholders had called on the Federal Government to establish a National Agency on Cancer Control to assist cancer victims in the country.

The NGO made the call during the commemoration of the 2017 World Cancer Day observed on Saturday Feb. 4.

The cancer day is part of the World Cancer Campaign, which responds to the Charter of Paris adopted at the World Summit against Cancer for the New Millennium on Feb. 4, 2000.

World Cancer Day: Consultant wants FG to create more cancer centres

Dr.Tijani Oseni, a consultant and family physician has urged the Federal Government to build functional and well-equipped cancer centres across the country for the treatment of the disease.

Oseni made the call on Saturday, noting that the 2017 edition World Cancer Day was observed well in Auchi Etsako West Local Government Area, Edo.

The World Cancer Day is being celebrated annually on Feb. 4 across the world and the theme for 2017 is “We Can, I Can’’.

Oseni said that few teaching hospitals in the country had few cancer facilities and equipment.

“Only three hospitals specialise in the treatment of cancer in Nigeria with obsolete equipment to work with.

“Governments need to create more awareness on cancer and engage in public-private partnerships to create more centres,’’ he said.

The consultant said that many cancers could be prevented by avoiding exposure to common risk factors such as tobacco smoke and industrial smoke.

He advised people to always go for regular medical check-up for early detection and treatment of cancer.

“To avoid cancer and ensure healthy living, people need and eat healthy food which provides minerals and vitamins to fight cancerous diseases,’’ he said.

USAID trains leaders on diarrhea campaign

The United State Agency for International Development (USAID) said it had trained 722 faith-based community leaders in Benue as part of its strategy to promote the campaign against diarrhea in the state.

Mrs. Ayodele Iroko, USAID Chief of Party for the Sustainability of Health Outcomes in Private Sector, made the disclosure on Wednesday in Makurdi when she visited the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Eunice Ortom.

She said that the US decided to work with the private sector to ensure that diarrhea was reduced to the barest minimum, noting that USAID adopted the strategy due to failure of previous efforts to yield matching results.

“In spite of our efforts of going from state to state to campaign against malaria, diarrhea and other maternal/child diseases, we did not see matching results.

“We therefore decided to look at areas we have not tried by scale-training community leaders to reach the rural dwellers,” she explained.

Iroko said that the agency hoped for better and wider integration of the campaign through community dialogue and appealed to Mrs. Ortom to partner the agency to push diarrhea out of Benue and Nigeria.

Responding, Ortom commended the team for the efforts at securing the future of Benue children by ensuring that they were healthy.

She observed that good health could only be achieved through the appropriation of the right mobilization, adding that they had mobilized the right persons by training faith-based community leaders.

The governor’s wife said that by the training, the leaders had become knowledgeable and ready to impact same to the rural dwellers “that good hygiene prevents diarrhea and zincs application helps in rehydration’’.

She assured the team of her commitment to make the project a success.

Stress: Medical Practitioner advises Nigerians to take health care seriously

Dr.Richard Okoye, proprietor, Save- A- Life Mission Hospital, Port Harcourt, has advised Nigerians to pay adequate attention to their health.

Okoye gave the advice on Thursday in Port Harcourt at a Seminar on stress organised by Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Rivers Chapter.

‘’We should pay attention to our health; the only wealth we have is our health,’’ he said.

Okoye noted that his advice had become imperative due to the present economic recession in the country that was capable of causing stress for people.

According to him, ‘’multiple suicides’’ would have occurred if the economic recession had hit places such as United States of America (USA) and European countries.

He said the country had the lowest cost of healthcare in the world and noted that there was little or no reason for citizens not to take adequate care of their health.

Okoye, a health television educationist, lamented that Nigerians did little to service their health, but spent a lot of money, servicing their cars among other facilities.

In her contribution, Dr Ipalibo Harry-Binigo, Deputy Governor of Rivers, said stress could be heightened by economic recession.

According to her, the seminar is timely and commended NUJ for organising it.

Represented by Mr.Gilbert Nria, Senior Assistant to Deputy Governor on administration, Binigo said Rivers Government was determined to increase health facilities in the State.

She urged NUJ to assist in sensitising members of the public on the need to make use of the health facilities provided by the government.

Mr Omoni Ayo-Tamuno, Chairman of the state council of NUJ, said the seminar was to educate members on the dangers of stress.

He noted that Journalists we prone to health challenges due to the nature of their job and urged them to take adequate care of their health.
