Suspected herdsmen invade Kogi community, kill seven

Not less than seven persons have been killed in overnight attacks by suspected herdsmen in Koto-Karfe in Kogi Local Government Area of Kogi State.

It was gathered that the attacks took place in the early hours of Tuesday around 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m.

Sources in Koton-Karfe told newsmen that the suspected herdsmen had hidden in mountains surrounding the communities without the knowledge of the people.

“However, at about 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday the suspected herdsmen numbering over thirty fully armed with AK 47 and other dangerous weapons invaded the communities and opened fire on residents.”

According to the source, the suspected Fulani herdsmen divided themselves for the coordinated attack on the two communities.

It was gathered that three persons died on the spot during the attack which lasted several hours.

The Administrator of the Kogi Local Government, Barrister Muhammed Tanko who confirmed the attack said that the security agents in the state were on the top of the situation.

He noted that the attack took them by surprise because the Koton-Karfi community was a peaceful community.

  • Killings: Benue rejects FG’s ‘RUGA’ settlement for herdsmen

The Benue State Government has rejected the proposed RUGA settlement for herdsmen by the Federal Government in the State.

The state’s decision was revealed in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the governor Terver Akase.

The statement decried the action of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, which it said was attempting to subvert the right of a State to make laws for the governance of their people

The statement read: It has become necessary to make the position of the government and people of Benue State abundantly clear on the Ruga settlements for herdsmen being implemented by the Federal Government across the states including Benue.

A few weeks ago, the Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture with his team in Benue State informed officials of the State Ministry of Agriculture that he had received directives from the Ministry’s headquarters Abuja to establish Ruga which means ‘Fulani settlement’ in parts of the State.

The Director stated that the local government areas selected for the Ruga settlements were Otukpo, Tarka and Ukum.

The Permanent Secretary, Benue State Ministry of Agriculture drew the attention of the Director and his team to the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law 2017 being implemented in the state. When they were also reminded about the Land Use Act which confers on the Governor the powers to administer lands in all parts of the State, officials of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture left with a promise to relay the message to their headquarters.

“They surprisingly returned a few days later with contractors to commence work on the Ruga settlements.”

We find the approach of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture not only as a gross violation of the Ranching law but also as an insult to the sensibilities of the entire people of Benue State.

“It could be recalled that the people and government of Benue State rejected cattle colonies and still reject the policy in whichever robes it is disguised.”

“Governor Samuel Ortom made the stand of Benue State known during the unveiling of the Livestock Development Programme in Abuja last year. He stressed that the State would embrace the policy only if it supports implementation of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law 2017.”

“The Governor also insisted that Benue State has no land for open grazing of cattle and he restated ranching as a lasting solution to the incessant herders and farmers crisis which the country ought to embrace.”

“Governor Ortom made similar presentations at different fora to buttress why open grazing of livestock is not feasible in a densely populated country with over 200 million people”

“During the National Council on Agriculture summit which took place in Owerri, Imo State in April this year, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture attempted to impose Ruga settlement patterns on the states but the Benue State delegation seized the opportunity to remind the summit that Benue State has a law on ranching which has phased out open grazing. No one at the summit put forth an alternative method of animal husbandry to counter the state’s presentation.”

“It would also be recalled that the National Economic Council, NEC, had also unanimously adopted ranching as the best method of livestock breeding for the country. It is therefore shocking to see the Federal Government turning round to establish Fulani herdsmen settlements in some states including Benue, contrary to the position of NEC.”

“We wish to remind those pushing for Ruga settlements that the Constitution of the country gives states the right to make laws for the governance of their people. Any attempt to subvert such right is a direct attack on the Constitution. Those behind such a move are enemies of peace and progress.”

“The Government of Benue State is willing to support cattle owners to establish ranches as stipulated by the law prohibiting open grazing.”

“We, however, wish to reiterate that Benue State has no land for grazing reserves, grazing routes, cattle colonies or ruga settlements.”

Herdsmen attack passengers on Ife-Ibadan highway, kill 1

Bandits, described as Fulani herdsmen on Wednesday attacked passengers on the Ife-Ibadan highway, killing one person.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the dead man was identified as Mr Adenipekun Ademiju, a worker in the Atakumosa West Local Government Area of Osun.

Ademiju was said to have boarded a vehicle at Osu town going to Ibadan when he and other passengers were attacked at Ikire community along the expressway.

According to an eye-witness account, Ademiju was hit by bullet as the robbers fired indiscriminately in to forcefully stop the vehicle.

“The man was killed instantly by Fulani herdsmen who rob regularly on this road.

“It was Ademiju and the driver that were in the car but while the robbers were shooting indiscriminately to forcefully stop them, the bullet hit the deceased.

“The driver ran into the nearby bush and Ademiju’s body was left on the highway by the robbers, who went away with the car,” the witness said.

The Public Relations Officer of the Osun State Police Command, SP. Folashade Odoro, who confirmed the incident in an interview with newsmen, said police were still investigating the matter.

Herdsmen and other criminal gangs have launched deadly attacks on highways in parts of the country in recent years, making travelling a risky venture nationwide.

Kidnappers have similarly, descended on hapless citizens in full force but the Federal Government has equally descended on the criminal elements, making life unbearable for them.

Herdsmen raping our wives –Anambra youths declare

Disillusioned youths from Anambra West Local Government Area of Anambra State on Monday protested against the alleged raping of women in the area by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The youths from Anam and Igala communities also noted that Fulani herdsmen had killed and mutilated some people in the area.

The placard-carrying campaigners, who converged on Umueze Anam Bridge, vowed to resist further attacks by the herdsmen.

They said, “How can they be raping our mothers, wives and sisters in our presence almost on a daily basis? Enough is enough.”

Some of their placards read, “Silent killing of our people by Fulani herdsmen on the farms and our villages are still going on”, “We are running out of patience with the violent activities of Fulani herdsmen in Anambra West”, “Pushing us to the wall will bring mayhem”, enough of the killing of our people”, “Police and Army are only protecting herdsmen while they are killing our people”.

They urged President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Willie Obiano to intervene.

Odikpo Madubueze, spokesperson for the group said, “We are just respecting Governor Obiano that is why we have not confronted these herdsmen. If they continue what they are doing, we will confront them and it will be bloody and we’re sure at the end of the clash no herdsman will ever come to Anambra West again.”

He added, “We are disappointed that the government is paying lip service to this issue. The visitors will come here to rape our mothers, wives, sisters, attack and kill our people. We can no longer tolerate these.

“Obiano should intervene now; we do not want to create any embarrassing situation for him, but we expect him to act now.

“We do not want to take the law into our own hands, but the federal and Anambra state governments should not allow us to engage in violence; they (herdsmen) have humiliated us enough and many of our people who are predominantly farmers have abandoned their farms.

“We cannot run away from our farms and villages because of people we decided to accommodate to do their cattle business.”

  • Herdsmen kill three, injure one in Kogi communities

Herdsmen kill three, injure one in Kogi communities

Lokoja – Unknown gunmen suspected to be Fulani herders ambushed and killed three Bagana farmers on Wednesday on the Abejukolo-Bagana road in Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Those who lost their lives in the deadly ambush were in their 20s, according to the villagers, and included Samson Ajene, Adah Audu, and Monday Ocho, while the injured, a son of a popular timber dealer, Haruna Ajene, is lying critically at the General Hospital, Abejukolo.

According to the inhabitants, Samson Ajene and Monday Ocho met their death on their farms at Ojuwo Igboone, while Adah Audu was mowed down by the gunmen while he was conveying cassava tubers on his motorcycle from the farm.

The natives lamented that the sins which the people of Bagana were suffering from did not emanate from them, stressing that the people were living in perpetual fears of attack.

They noted that unless security agencies adopted proactive measures to halt the activities of the criminals, the communities risked being exterminated in their ancestral homes.

The incident was confirmed by the Special Adviser to the Sole Administrator of Omala LGA on Security Matters, Steve Shaibu, who said the victims were returning from their farms when they were ambushed and killed.

He said before the attack, the villagers around Obakume villages had allegedly made formal a report of the mass movement of some Agatu militias from Benue State to the forest with sporadic gunshots, stressing that they might have killed scores of cows belonging to the Fulani herdsmen living in those areas.

The Special Adviser added that a similar incident had occurred at Iyade, near Abejukolo, the headquarters of the council in which the Agatu militias unleashed terror on the herders.

He said reprisal attacks by the Fulani led to the death of many of the natives and burning of their houses.

He lamented the latest killing of the young men who eked a living through farming, and called on the authorities to intensify efforts to unravel perpetrators of the crime.

Shaibu explained that his office had written several times on the nefarious activities of criminal elements from Nassarawa and Benue states who used the River Niger to launch attacks on Fulani herders, thus leaving the natives at the mercy of the herders who would later carry out reprisal attacks on them.

Speaking to Daily Independent, Aliyu Akuh, the member representing Omala Local Government Area in the state House of Assembly, condemned the killing and maiming of the natives by unknown gunmen, and called on the state government and security agencies to deploy their intelligence to arrest the ugly situation.

He bemoaned the unwarranted crises between Agatu in Benue State and the Fulani which erupted in 2013 and had claimed more than 200 lives while properties worth millions of naira had been destroyed.

He suggested that the government should set up a committee of enquiry to permanently resolve the impasse to prevent further clashes between the Fulani and Agatus, with its attendant spill over on the people of Omala LGA.

Meanwhile, the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police DSP William Aya, has confirmed the incident.

He said both the mobile police and conventional police had been drafted to the area to forestall further break down of law and order.

He added that he was yet to get the actual number of deaths but said the situation had been brought under control.

  • In Benue people are ranched instead of cattle

In Benue people are ranched instead of cattle

All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Benue, Emmanuel Jime said people have been the ones ranched instead of cattle, under Governor Samuel Ortom’s anti-open grazing law.

Jime stated this during a live “True-Talk Benue Gubernatorial Debate 2019” monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi.

He said that the implementation of the anti- open grazing law has been “politicised”.

He regretted that instead of the law guaranteeing the ranching of all livestocks, it had only succeeded in ranching human beings in camps across the state.

“I completely support the anti open grazing law. My only reservations with the law is its implementation. The implementation of the law has been politicised.

“There is no need to argue: at the moment it us human beings that have been ranched while cattle are all over the places.”

He further said that it appears that certain people in state stand to gain political benefits from the continuous stay of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the camps.

He said some politicians, especially in Benue state, seeking political offices do not know the job description of the office they seek to occupy. He said such people when they win elections are bound to fail.

The two-term House of Representatives member also said that he was contesting the elections following his antecedents and regretted that his main opponent, Ortom, has nothing to show for his four years in office.

He said his administration would institutionalise compulsory free primary education in the state and pledged to block all financial leakages.

The governorship candidate of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), Rev Frederick Ikyaan, said his administration would restore the lost glory of farming.

Ikyaan said his administration would also make use of the vigilante to effectively address security challenges.

NAN reports that the debate featured two other candidates Dr Stephen Akuma of the National Conscience Party (NCP) and Mr John Tseayo of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).

Gov Samuel Ortom snubbed the debate though the organisers claimed all governorship candidates were invited.
