Herdsmen attacked us because we stopped them from grazing inside our premise – Taraba Catholic seminary

A Catholic seminary in Jalingo, Taraba state, said it was invaded by herdsmen because they were not allowed to graze their cows inside the religious institution.

Recall that TheNewsGuru reported yesterday that the Sacred Heart Minor Seminary was attacked on Monday by suspected herders who reportedly shot a priest identified as Cornelius Kobah.

The attackers reportedly beaten up a priest and two students when the invasion occurred.

Emmanuel Atsue, the rector of the seminary, said the attackers invaded the institution with “sophisticated” weapons.

Writing via his Facebook page, he said the attackers were aggrieved that they were not allowed to graze within the seminary and its surroundings.

His words: “They shot sporadically at the rector’s residence, broke window glasses in the process, (litered live bullets were collected by police) windscreen of one of the vehicles belonging to one of the priests.

“From their conversation we were able to understand that their grievances against us is that the security men in the seminary have been challenging their decision to graze right inside the seminary: around the classes, football field, laundry etc. They said even inside the church if they see grass their cows will graze.”

Atsue said normalcy was restored to the area with the prompt response of the police, army, and other security operatives.

He said none of the students were missing, although “two of them who were showing them (the attackers) the way to the father’s house suffered injuries from the sticks of the herdsmen”.

Atsue said the bishop has approved a one-week break for the seminarians “to enable them manage trauma for a while and to show themselves to their parents that they were safe”.

  • FG to reopen existing grazing reserves to address farmers/herdsmen crisis

The Federal Government says it will reopen the existing grazing reserves to address farmers-herdsmen clashes across the country.

Chief Audu Ogbeh, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said this while speaking to newsmen on the achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in the agriculture sector in three year,

Ogbeh said that although some of the 415 gazetted grazing reserves in the country had been encroached on, there was still about three million hectares of land available for cattle grazing reserves.

“We have to get it sorted out and we are starting work in another week or two to reopen the old grazing reserves. “At a time at the end of the first republic, there were 415 of them even as far down as the South West and South East.

“Today, they have been encroached upon (but) we still have three million hectares available for cattle grazing reserves, that is more than the cattle in Nigeria needs.

“The problem is that over the years, we forgot that these herdsmen were going to become a problem. ”Later in life and especially, this new attitude by herdsmen that when they enter your farm, they should be free to eat your crops and you have no right to challenge them.

“That is a new phenomenon which we find extremely disturbing that when they do so, if you complain they can shoot you. “That was not so many years ago which is why we simply have to deal with the matter now.

“But the final message to Nigerians is that we have no choice but to produce enough food to feed ourselves so that the average family does not spend more than 20 per cent of its earnings buying food. ”As it is, it almost 60 per cent that people spend buying food. It is too expensive and its not sustainable.’’

The minister said that the government would bring in cashew nuts processing machines to enable the country double her export earnings from N800 million dollars to 1.7 billion dollars annually. “We send raw cashews to Vietnam and India; they process, create jobs and make two and half times the profit that we make.

“Vietnam earns 3.5 billion dollars a year from cashew nuts bought from Africa from Nigeria, Ghana, Cote de’Ivoire, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau and Tanzania so, why can’t we process.’’

Ogbeh said the Federal Government had launched a programme known as `LIFE’, to empower the rural areas by providing processing machines to women and youths cooperatives to add value to what they produce.

A native who confirmed the incident said, “The two men were returning from the burial of the Catholic priests and the parishioners when they were attacked by herdsmen.

“Naka/Makurdi highway has been abandoned since herdsmen invaded Naka a few weeks ago. Anyone coming to Makurdi from Naka has to pass through the major road to Taraku, making the journey of 30 minutes’ drive to result in two and a half hours’ journey.

Again, herdsmen invade Benue community, kill five

The Michia settlement in Gaambe-Tiev of Logo Local Government Area of Benue state was on Sunday thrown into mourning again as suspected armed Fulani herdsmen invaded the area killing five people and injuring several others.

According to a community leader in the council area, Joseph Anawah, the attackers invaded the community between 11.30 pm and 11.55pm Sunday night.

“The attack, which was carried out swiftly in a professional manner, has so far claimed five lives, with many wounded.

“The locals were attacked between 11:30 pm and 11:55 pm on Sunday. Mchia is a few kilometers from Anyiin town.

“Soldiers arrived the scene after the operation has been executed. Corpses of the murdered have been moved to Anyiin mortuary,” the community leader said.

Chairman of the local government area, Richard Nyajo, told our correspondent on phone that the herdsmen stormed the village late hour of Sunday and opened fire on the people, most of whom were already asleep.

Nyajo, who said that the settlement was his village, said five persons were killed instantly, with several others sustaining serious injuries.

“Yes, I can confirm to you that the herdsmen attacked my village, Mchia, killing five persons and injuring many others. After the attack, they withdrew through Arugu, a village close to Anyiin.

“The villagers traced their footsteps and discovered some bank ATM cards, which will be given as evidence to security personnel to investigate. They were 10 in number,” he said.

The chairman stated that soldiers in the area went after the attackers, saying, “but we do not know what happened afterward.”

  • Herdsmen attack: 17 persons injured at Ughelli Government College

No fewer than seventeen persons were injured as herdsmen invaded the Government College, Ughelli, Delta State, the Principal of the College. Mr. Godspower Odenema, has revealed.

TheNewsGuru reports Mr. Odenema raised the alarm over herdsmen attack on students and staff of the school while speaking with newsmen in Ughelli.

“My school has been invaded by herdsmen, security agents should come to my rescue. The students and staff of Ughelli Government College in Delta State are living in fear following the attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen,” he said.

He revealed that his staffs were attacked on Monday on their way home from school by herdsmen with seven of them sustaining injury.

The Principal described the activities of the herdsmen as “hell fire”, alleging that their constant incursion to the school premises in an attempt to look for grass for their herds has destroyed many of the school’s facilities.

While appealing to the Delta state government for the construction of a perimeter fence around the school’s athletic field, as well as the deployment of security staff to always be on guard, and prevent the herdsmen from coming to the school’s compound, the principal said, “We have suffered lots in the hands of the herdsmen, our injured staffers are still lying critically ill in the hospital over their injuries. Thank God they were not killed”.

He explained that since a portion of the school fence was broken, hoodlums including herdsmen activities have continued to unsettle members of the school community.

Police Spokesman in the State, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, confirmed the development and said, “We are investigating the act, though no arrest has been made, but the police will do everything possible to bring the herdsmen to book”.

Sources said that the frequent “wicked activities of herdsmen” in Ughelli, Abraka and its environs, have created sleepless nights for the residents who “currently sleep with their two eyes open”.

  • Killings: Buhari treating herdsmen like kinsmen – Anglican bishop

Killings: Buhari treating herdsmen like kinsmen – Anglican bishop

The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of encouraging herdsmen attacks in the country with the way he (Buhari) treats them (herdsmen) like his kinsmen.

Rising from its 2018 synod at the St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Amawbia, the Bishop of Awka Diocese, Dr. Alex Ibezim in his charge wondered why the Fulani herdsmen were being handled with kid’s glove.

In the Bishop’s charge with the theme, ‘Mission, the heart of God,” the church urged Buhari to stop treating the killers with levity.

The synod noted that a group that had killed thousands of Nigerians should not be treated as kinsmen.

The church regretted that the return of democracy in 1999 that ought to be a kind of political liberation had been allowed to divide Nigerians into religious and ethnic cleavages.

The charge added, “Nigeria, a major oil producer and Africa’s most populous nation and second-largest economy, is facing challenges. Most political parties are much more concerned about upcoming elections rather than the burning issues of the country.

“Political liberalisation ushered in by the return to civilian rule in 1999 has allowed militants from religious and ethnic groups to pursue their demands through violence.

“Separatist aspirations have also been growing, prompting reminders of the bitter civil war over the breakaway Biafran republic in the late 1960s.

It added that Nigeria while still reeling from the Boko Haram insurgency and its numerous atrocities, another terrorist group, which he referred to as Fulani herdsmen, sprouted.

The church said, “The group has done enough havoc to be acknowledged by the global community as the fourth deadliest terror group in the world.

The church noted that between 2014 and 2018, herdsmen had killed over 1,229 people across the country with Benue, Taraba, Nassarawa, Plateau, Kaduna and Katsina as the worst hit states.

The church added,” They are armed with sophisticated weapons and usually attack their target communities at a time they are most vulnerable such as at midnight or on Sundays when they are in church, killing people indiscriminately and burning houses and looting properties.

“Most worrisome is the brutality and impunity with which the assailants operate without regard for the law and the sanctity of human life. The Nigerian police and even the military seem powerless to defend the victims from being mercilessly slaughtered in their homes.

“It is unfortunate that this level of criminal impunity is happening in a sovereign nation with a constitution which declares that the security and welfare of the citizens shall be a major responsibility of the state.

“Perhaps we need to ask why the police and the military are incapable of protecting the farmers from violent attacks by Fulani herdsmen. Is it true that the Fulani militias are better armed and sometimes outnumber the police?

“Why is it difficult for the Federal Government to contain the terror of the Fulani militia? Who are those arming the Fulani herdsmen to unleash mayhem on innocent and defenceless Nigerians?”

The synod wondered what President Muhammadu Buhari silence on the issue could mean, stressing that “Nigerians are tired of speeches and condolence messages to victims.

They added, “If this country will continue to remain as one, then those who perpetrate crime must be dealt with accordingly without minding whose ox is gored.”

On the 2019 general elections, the synod urged politicians not to pursue it “with senseless desperado and indiscretion.”

It described Buhari’s anti-corruption fight as lopsided and ineffectual.
