Killer herdsmen are nothing but terrorists – Senator Sani

Senator Shehu Sani has said herdsmen who are responsible for the killings and slaughtering in Benue and Taraba are nothing but terrorists “except if we want to call a spade a pestle or a spoon”.

The Senator representing Kaduna Central in the National Assembly said this on Monday in reaction to Saturday afternoon’s raid by suspected bandits at Gwaska in Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

“Herdsmen who commit massacre in Benue and Taraba and ‘Bandits’ who commit massacre in Zamfara and Birnin Gwari in Kaduna state, are nothing but terrorists; except if we want to call a spade a pestle or a spoon,” he stated.

The Kaduna Senator vowed to support President Muhammadu Buhari on the floor of the Senate to fund and equip the DSS, Police and Civil Defence, as he did to the military to “bring an end to all the excuses now ‘produced daily in an industrial-scale’”.

“The indifference of the ruling political establishment to end the ceaseless violence and killings in the country is based on the fact that the victims are the poor and the peasants in rural areas.

“Again and again, I will continue to raise the tragic situation of Birnin Gwari on the floor of the senate until it touches the conscience of those responsible for its security to prioritize human lives over 2019 politics.

“Mass burial has become ‘a daily ritual’ in Birnin Gwari. We must admit the fact that the police and the army have nothing much to work with to enable them confront the danger and the superior fire power of the armed bandits,” he said.

TheNewsGuru reports bandits attacked Gwaska village in Birnin Gwari on Saturday afternoon leaving about 45 persons dead.

Residents said the killings occurred around 2:30 p.m. when the bandits stormed the village in large numbers on motorcycles. They also burnt many houses in the community.

Confirming the incident, Kaduna State Police commissioner, Austin Iwar, said the police have deployed over 150 personnel to the area as directed by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on Sunday.

“Yes 45 people were confirmed dead and as we speak the state command have already deployed 150 policemen to the area to provide security,” he said.

“We will also deploy another 200 police officers by next week to help protect lives and property in Birnin Gwari. We are doing everything possible to secure the area,” he said.

On the need for the command to work with local vigilante in the area, Mr Austin said the police is already doing so and will continue to work with them in the area of community policing.

A community leader in Birnin Gwari, who identified himself as Hussaini, said over 40 bodies were brought to emir’s place in Birnin Gwari on Sunday afternoon.

“Some bodies that were seemed to have been burnt were already buried by their love ones at Doka and Mando villages, few kilometres from Birnin Gwari town,” he said.

Following the latest attack, Governor Nasir El-Rufai on Sunday evening had announced that the federal government agreed to deploy a permanent army battalion in the troubled area.

Personal Assistant to President Buhari on New Media, Bashir Ahmad today said the FG has approved a new military battalion, a new Police Area Command and two additional Div Police HQs for the area.

He said it was in efforts by the Buhari government “To bring an end to the bloodletting, and ensure that the criminals behind it are brought to justice,” while adding “The killings in Birnin Gwari are regrettable”.

El-Rufai confirmed the development, stressing the engagements between the State and Federal Governments is yielding results.

“Military and security deployments have continued in the area since then, but the bandits hiding in the forests continue to exert a deadly toll, killing civilians, soldiers and other security forces.

“The Federal Government has now approved a permanent army battalion in the area, instead of the previous ad-hoc deployments. Police strength in the Birnin-Gwari axis is also being enhanced,” the Kaduna state governor confirmed.

  • Special Report: ‘We’ll rather die in S/Africa’s xenophobic attacks than be killed by herdsmen in Nigeria‘

Special Report: ‘We’ll rather die in S/Africa’s xenophobic attacks than be killed by herdsmen in Nigeria‘

“What exactly are we doing in this country when our lives are daily threatened by arrogant herdsmen who are now renowned for killing unquestioned? Are you not bothered by the several killings in Benue, Zamfara, Kogi, Taraba and other states?

What has the Nigerian government done about it? Who have so far been arrested? But people are buried in their countries on a daily basis just for being Nigerians? And you want me to be part of those people? That’s over my dead body!”

These were the exact words of Biodun Ademola (not real names) as I questioned him and several others lined up eagerly on a queue to apply for South African Visa at VFS Global in Lagos on Monday last week.

I reminded Biodun that other countries had their security, economic among other challenges – South Africa, in particular, was still dealing with xenophobic attacks especially on Nigerians, he impatiently said:

“Yes I’ve heard and read of xenophobic attacks there but that has subsidized seriously now. Come to think of it, is it not even more justified to defend yourselves against strangers taking up your job and other means of livelihood than to lose your life to an animal in your country? A cow for that matter? If I perish in South Africa of xenophobic attacks, it’ll be more honourable than being hacked to death by a fellow Nigerian for being less valuable than a cow,” Biodun said unapologetically.

On the fateful day, the number of applicants for both South Africa and Canada Visas were almost in their thousands. A further enquire from the processing company, VFS Global showed that South Africa receives the highest number of applicants with over 230 applications daily.

VFS Global currently acts as the outsourced partner for the visa applications and processing of South Africa, Canada, Belgium, France, and other countries.

Applicants including students, artisans, family, etc. start moving in their numbers to the Lekki office as early as 6am daily. They take numbers in order of arrival and would only be attended to by 8am.

Amazed by the huge numbers of applicants for South Africa visa as against other countries, this reporter further asked a lady who appeared to be rough handled repeatedly by muscular guys queued behind her to jostle for a space ahead as the announcement was made by some security guards that the South African processing centre had received enough application for the day at just 10am! This will mean a repetition of the whole process by the following day. The lady was however determined not to give her space for anyone irrespective of the pressure.

“Please, I don’t think I can entertain any question now,” She said firmly as I approached her. Feeling determined, I pestered her further, ‘Don’t you think things are not this hard in Nigeria for you to go through this kind of stress just to visit another man’s land as a second class citizen”? I asked knowing well that a thunderous and emotional response will follow.

“What do you mean by that? Are you blind to the crazy things happening in this country? I know it’s pretty expensive to try UK or America Visa that’s why I decided to go for South Africa’s. From my researches, I know they have quality education and stable academic calendar, good road networks and a stable economy. What else am I looking for? I’ve thought this over and over and my mind is made up. Not even my parents can stop me from getting out of this frustrating place called Nigeria. I’m so done!,” she said sounding irreversible in her decision.

However, lock ran out on her as officials stopped further consideration of fresh applicants by 10am citing reaching the maximum 230 daily benchmark. However, applicants for other countries were still being attended to because they are relatively low compared to those for South Africa.

We stand in for applicants, fast track VISA processes – Agents

As soon as the application timing elapsed, some of the agents who had been lurking around dishing out unsolicited advises and advertisement of their services to applicants offered to help stand in for applicants who might not make it early enough to the centre again the following day; Tuesday.

One of such, a man in his early thirties looking smartly dressed approached me with the assurances that I can actually stay at home and get my visa processed within two days. He termed it ‘Non appearance.’

“Bros, sorry you couldn’t get in to start your application. That’s how it happens here daily especially for South African and Canadian applicants. To be selected, you must have gotten here at least by 7am. However, considering the everyday traffic hassles of Lagos, applicants hardly meet up. But since you a working class, you might want to avoid all these stress. We can do it for you. We’ll stand in for you as early as 6am, take a number for you and you can come in to start up from there. Or we can finish the whole process for you without showing at all. Its Non appearance. We will even deliver your passport to you at the convenience of your house or office. All you need is just to supply us all your detailed information, pay us and you are done!,” he said sounding like an advertising guru.

Asked what the cost implication is, he said: “It depends on the service you are opting for. If you want us to just pick a number on your behalf pending the time you come around to come start your application, we charge N5,000:00. Officially, the minimum time for processing of each application is six (6) days but we have our guys inside who help fast track the application and make it possible to get within two days. For that we charge N70,000:00 aside from the N35,000:00 non refundable processing fee that you pay to VFS Global. Our guys inside charge N65,000:00 while we take the remaining N5,000:00 for bringing business to them. The non-appearance is N150,000:00,” the agent said.

Prodding further, I asked for the authenticity of claims bearing in mind the ‘Do not patronize touts and agents’ boldly written on the company’s wall. To which he responded: “Bros you don’t have a problem. This thing did not start today. We have done it for countless number of people but it’s all coded. The guys inside do it well and some of them even approach applicants while attending to them at the counter. I’ll give you my number and take you to my shop. I am very popular here and the security guys know us well,’ he assured.

Deal with touts/agents at your peril – VFS Global

However, in a swift rebuttal, the processing company, VFS Global warned strictly against dealing with anyone other than staff of the company. An official of the company who preferred speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not officially in position to do so said applicants dealing with touts or so called agents are doing so at their peril. He explained that applicants are treated on a first come, first serve basis daily and that applications and processed visas can’t be received by proxy.

“Whatever those guys have told you is their own marketing strategy. We’ve continually sounded warnings that no one should patronize them. Several people have complained of how they disappeared with their monies and they are on their own.

The application is simple enough for anyone to comprehend. Download application form on the VFS Global website. Fill and come for submission from Monday to Friday. For short term (holiday visa) you pay a total processing fee of N34,030 and N56,040:00 for long term (the fee might vary depending on what the applicant is going there for).

It takes a minimum of six (6) working days to process each visa. We also provide applicants with premium lodge space at an additional fee of N10,000:00. In the lodge, applicants will have unhindered access to photocopy machine, light refreshements and can also seek special clarifications on any issue as regards their applications. However, this is not a guarantee that visa will be processed ahead of other applicants who did not subscribe to use the service.

Asked if he’s aware that some of the staff collaborate with the agents outside to do shady deals, he said: ‘There nothing of such. They are only saying that to make you fall prey to their antics. Anyone found receiving bribes to in order to give special consideration to particular applicants will be summarily dismissed and handed over to the security agencies,” he said.

  • Donald Trump’s only option on Buhari & Nigeria

Yesterday, far away in Washington, United States of America, President Donald Trump told President Muhammadu Buhari that Americans are not happy with Nigeria under the latter’s watch, and the reason being the massive killing of Nigerian Christians by Jihadists’ Fulani Herdsmen.

What was not too clear from Trumps statement however was the quarter he directed the Americans’ unpleasantness to – is it to President Buhari who reigns and rules in Nigeria or to Nigerians; who are being slaughtered daily all across the country? We shall answer this question later but for now, let us deal with Donald Trump’s statement.

“We’ve had serious problems with Christians who have been murdered, killed,” Trump said, apparently referring to one of the most recent attacks on April 24 on a Church in Benue State of Nigeria, where 18 people, including two priests, were murdered. “We’re going to work on that problem and working on that problem very, very hard,” Trump said, but not without asking President Buhari to ensure the release of the abducted Dapchi School girl, Leah Sharibu; being a Christian and the only one still being held in captivity by Boko Haram because of her faith.

What Donald Trump may not have known, while advising Muhammadu Buhari on this issue, is the character of his guest in some areas of life or what l will call his true idiosyncrasy. Buhari is a man that prosecutes his drawn-up agenda with ferocious tenacity. It does not matter what the agenda is all about, either for evil or for good, he has that passion of dedication to carry out every of his plans with unequaled strength of character. This is one aspect of the man not known to Donald Trump. Yet, there is another aspect of the man that is even trickier.

Unlike Donald Trump, Muhammadu Buhari is shrewd in keeping what he intends doing secretly to his chest at all times. While Trump would announce what he intends doing loudly enough before arriving the point of execution, Buhari would never divulge his intentions to any other person except a very few that comes within his blood linage. And this is even of recent; a situation that is prompted by his failing health. Here is a man that could hold his thought far away from his own wife as long as the thinking is not “for the other room”. There few more we can mention here for the purpose of this exercise.

Donald Trump says everything he sees or hears. He is a “play boy” at most times which sometimes weighs him higher than late President Ronald Reagan; who was himself a distinguished actor of great fame. In the other hand, Muhammadu Buhari, being a typical military-politician, does not disseminate his spoils but instead bury them solidly only to be exhumed for use against raging foe. The only similarity between both men at this juncture of analogy is the ruthlessness and brutality of pounding on their foes – either real or imaginary.

There is one more thing that needs to be quickly said about these two men. Both of them are typically shrewd businessmen of the highest order. The only difference here is that while one [Trump] flouts his style of business around the world the other one [Buhari] secretly ploughs his trade of herds without too many people coming to know the balances of his books in this “profit and loss” page. Two of them are ruthless in protecting their business’ empires.

It is for these reasons that Donald Trump would have smiled to bed that he has swayed Buhari’s thought to preserve Nigerian Christians from untimely and brutal death in the hands of the Fulani herdsmen. Of course, Buhari gentleman’s demeanour at most times does not betray what he wants to do, mostly in the “other way round.” As such, Trump did not know that the man he spoke to in the White House is not the same man that operates the deadly [made so deadly by the President and his chosen “Ali Baba ten thieves”] Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

Donald Trump did not know too much of those killings that are going on in this “shithole” county on daily basis because if he had known, he would not have sold those A-29 Super Tucano Aircrafts to Buhari’s Nigeria.

Though the lure of almost US$600 Million which is to be made from the deal is great but not enough for Obama’s America to venture into such deal and this is maybe, for the reason of what President Barack Obama knew of the likely use those instruments of wars would be put into, beyond just fighting Boko Haram insurgence. Retired Lt-Gen T.Y. Danjuma, a business mogul per excellence and a former Chief of Army Staff revealed very recently that the Nigerian Armed Forces gives protection to those killing people all over Nigeria” hence his call for “self-defense”. We pray that President Buhari never deploy these ferocious Tucano Aircrafts to hunt fellow Nigerians under the pretense of fighting insurgents in the future.

The topic is not about the mathematics of the American military hardware sales to the Nigerian Government but it is more about what option is left for Donald Trump in his chosen voyage of either helping the Nigerian people; mostly those that “are waiting to be killed by Militia Herdsmen of Fulani origin” or the ruler who might be killing them.

Permit me to clear something on the usage of the word “Fulani origin”. By saying that the killers are Militia Herdsmen of Fulani Origin does not imply that these Fulani killers are necessarily those Fulani Nigerian origins only. The Fulani tribe spread widely beyond the borders of Nigeria into Niger, Chad, Cameroon Republics and even the Islamic Republic of Libya [going by the recent revelation of President Buhari].

There are more killing of Nigerians than President Trump knew about as of yesterday when he advised President Buhari to stop the killing of Christians and to bring back the only girl from Dapchi; Leah Sharibu, who is still being held in Boko Haram’s captivity for no other reason than being a Christian. Until the man; Donald Trump, knows the exact thing that is going on in Nigeria, he would be at dilemma in choosing whom and who to help between the Nigerian President and the Nigerian people. It is very essential for the demarcation to be made because too often, the interest of a State-Nation has been mistakenly presented to cover or being same with the interest of the Head of that State’s government. That was the situation France found itself under the rule of King Louis X1V, between September 1638 and September 1715. It was he who made the statement “I am the State”.

We have a responsibility therefore to help Donald Trump to help us in Nigeria by making facts of our lives under the presidency of Buhari known to him. Otherwise, he might be equating helping President Buhari to helping us, the Nigerian people. He needs to know the following therefore.

One, just this last Saturday April 28, 2018, eight people were reported killed while scores were injured in a fresh herdsmen attack in Benue State. This happened in Agagbe Community, Sengev, Gwer West local government area of the State. According to the story, the marauding herdsmen resorted to sacking the community after their entreaty to be allowed into the community with their cattle to graze was turned down by the youths and elders of the area.

“They had few days ago sent emissaries to the village to be allowed entry into the village to graze their cows but the people refused. Shortly after, the herders were seen with thousands of cow trying to enter the village which the people resisted. They later came back and claimed that their cows had been killed but the people insisted that there was nothing like that”, saying “it was a ploy by the herders to curry sympathy to allow them entry into the community”.

Later that Saturday night, around 11pm, armed herdsmen stormed Agagbe and started shooting sporadically, burnt down properties of the people, killed and injured many. “Many of the people have fled their homes and taken refuge in nearby communities in Apa local government area of the state,” eye witnesses revealed.

Elsewhere the Oba of Benin was begging President Buhari and the Nigerian Governors’ Forum to put an end to killing in the country. The Oba, Omo N’oba N’edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, spoke on the issue during a visit to the Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola

”I want you to mobilise your colleagues in the Nigerian Governors’ Forum to address the issue of insecurity in the country and do something to stop the unwarranted killings by herdsmen in Benue, Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Edo and other parts of the country. It is unfortunate that this is going on in our land; we want something to be quickly done as soon as possible so that Nigerians can know peace because people are being swallowed by cattle in the land”, he said.

“Nigerians cherish their comfort and a peaceful environment so much; so we are charging those of you at the helm of affairs in the country to do everything humanly possible to guarantee peace for Nigerians. The bloodletting is too much in the land and the nation is bleeding, we want a stop to this. The killing of innocent citizens has to stop in every part of this country. It is worrisome that the trending news in the country today is killing here and there, no day you will not hear the news that people have been butchered by herdsmen. Mr. Governor, something urgent needs to be done about it”, the revered King concluded.

This is the true situation in Nigeria, which Donald Trump may not have known and it is crucial that he has all the details because President Buhari will not tell him. The danger of the Yankee not knowing is that he may, by being misled through lack of accurate information at his disposal, come to the conclusion that Nigeria and Nigerians would be helped better if Buhari is assisted to continue as president beyond 2019. And this is where the danger lurks.

Donald Trump need to be told the plain truth that given all the indexes on ground in Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari would always play the Hausa/Fulani card pathologically. He is ready, at any given time and all the times, to defend his kith and kin of the Fulani tribe to the detriment of all other tribes in Nigeria. Ipso facto, there is a dilemma of decision making confronting Donald Trump on this matter of new-found friendship with President Buhari and the limit of help he is to render to him.

Our President; whom we Nigerians know better than Donald Trump, is most unlikely to change his ways of life, not even at this ripe old age. He cannot improve the Nigerian economy because his own boss; former two-times President and a retired four-star General, Olusegun Obasanjo, said he is not good on economic administration. He is too tired [maybe for reason of old age] to monitor his appointee hence disobedience to his orders, like the one he personally reported when he said that “the Inspector General of Police disobeyed my order”, his instruction cannot help a Nation under anarchy, like Nigeria. There is little hope for economic growth because of the way corruption is growing bigger and larger under his administration; as just complained by the American government.

If all these, plus more evils, are common property of this administration the only optional help for Nigerian and Nigerians is to help President Muhammadu Buhari to a befitting retirement in Daura, come May 29, 2019. Donald Trump has a duty to perform in achieving this feat.

  • Buhari to Trump: ‘Nigerian herdsmen don’t carry weapons…’

President Muhammadu Buhari has again said that herdsmen in Nigeria do not carry guns but only wield sticks and occasionally machetes.

He said this on Monday in Washington DC during the bilateral talk with U.S. President Donald Trump, adding that herdsmen crisis in Nigeria is an age-long challenge.

“The problem of herders in Nigeria is a very long historical thing. The Nigerian herders don’t carry anything more than a stick and occasionally a matchet to cut down foliage and give it to their animals, these ones are carrying AK-47.

“So, people should not underrate what happened in Libya. 43 years of Ghaddaffi, people were recruited from Sahel and trained to shoot and kill. With the demise of Ghaddaffi they moved to other countries and region and carried the experience with them,” he said.

President Buhari added that this is what is aggravating herdsmen crisis in Nigeria. He also appreciated the United States government for assisting in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency and for US military presence in Nigeria.

“We are grateful to the United States for agreeing to give us the aircraft that we asked for. We are even more grateful for the physical presence of the United States military officials in Nigeria. Our institutions in Nigeria, for training them and going to the Northeast to see how they are performing.

“The commitment of the United States to get rid of terrorism across the world, we have fast earned experience from that and we are grateful for it,” he said.

  • ‘If not for education, I would have joined herdsmen in attacking farmers’ – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that if not for education, he may have been one of the Fulani herdsmen clashing with farmers across the country.

The President said during his two-day state visit to Bauchi State on Thursday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi, where he inaugurated the 261 Nigerian Air Force Referral Hospital, some roads and five tractors and some farm implements.

Buhari addressed thousands of Bauchi residents in Hausa.

He encouraged them to allow their children to go to school.

He said, “Make every effort to put your children in school, plead with them to be patient and read hard. In this generation, you cannot make it except you are educated.

“Now, look at the farmers /herdsmen’s clashes in the northern part of this country. I have been telling people that if I had not gone to school, I would not have gone into the military and where I come from since my cows are finished; maybe, I would have been involved in this fight.

“But because I went to school, I got a job to do and because of that, desertification is everywhere, there is no bush we will go to and cut down trees and destroy farms and the rainy season is not promising. Because of that, education is the guarantee.

“You should strive hard and be educated , get the education that will benefit you and the society , it is not compulsory that government will give you what to do.

Killings in Benue not religious -NASFAT

The Nashirullahi Fathi Society of Nigeria (NASFAT) has condemned the killings in Benue, Taraba and Nassarawa states.

The President of NASFAT, Engr. Kamil Bolarinwa, said in a statement signed by the Publicity Secretary of the society, Alhaji Banji Busari, that at a time when everyone had heaved a sigh of relief about the successes against Boko Haram insurgency, Nigerians were again jolted with the sad news of the killing of some clerics and several others Tuesday in Benue State.

He said, “Islam as a religion holds lives so sacred that its Holy Book decrees that whoever kills a soul is like he has killed the entire mankind (Q5:32).

While we seek collective efforts of all and sundry to ensure that peace reigns supreme in all parts of our dear country, caution should however be exercised not to ascribe religious colouration into this senseless killing.

Anyone who breaks law and order should be dealt with within the ambit of the law, regardless of his race, tribe or religion. Moreover, the perpetrators have never come out to say they are fighting religious war, nor has any intelligence report pointed in that direction.”

  • Killings: Herdsmen holding Nigeria to ransom, tame them now, PDP tells Buhari

Nigeria’s main opposition political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday charged the President Muhammadu Buhari led federal government to tame the herdsmen who have embarked on a killing spree in Nigeria since January.

The party’s stance was made known by its chairman, Prince Uche Secondus in a reaction to the latest killings of some priests and worshippers in Benue on Tuesday.

Secondus made the call in a condolence message to the Benue Governor, Mr Samuel Ortom, and the Catholic Church in Nigeria on killing of worshipers in a church in Benue by armed herdsmen on Tuesday.

The herdsmen murdered two Catholic priests and 17 other worshippers at St. Ignatius Quashi Catholic Church at Ukpor-Mbalom in the Gwer Local Government Area of Benue.

Secondus in the statement, issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Ike Abonyi, on Wednesday in Abuja decried the continued blood-letting in Benue and other parts of the country.

He stressed that the apparent inability of the government to stem the killings had raised a lot of concern on the future of the country.

“From whichever angle you are witnessing what is happening in this country, one thing is agreeable that this country is sliding dangerously.

“Nigerians and the global community have continued to watch.

“In the last one week, we have watched as disturbing indices continue to crop up, ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

Secondus admonished security operatives to ensure that their patriotism was to the country.

“I find it unexplainable that some group of gunmen should hold a state to ransom since January, killing and maiming citizens and destroying their houses and the security operatives appear helpless.

“Where are the military operatives that carried out Python and Crocodile dances in the South-East and South-South?

“How can anybody expect Benue State for instance to contribute its own share of the $1billion security vote when the national security architecture is not designed to protect their people?’’
