Why Trump’s conviction may fail – Clinton

Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says an acquittal in former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial will only be possible if the jury includes his co-conspirators.

“If Senate Republicans fail to convict Donald Trump, it won’t be because the facts were with him or his lawyers mounted a competent defence.

“It will be because the jury includes his co-conspirators,” Clinton wrote further on the micro-blogging website, The Hill on Thursday.

According to The Hill, the former U.S. top diplomat’s tweet came after the second day of arguments from House impeachment managers before the Senate.

Representatives David Cicilline and Joaquin Castro attempted to “draw a direct line between” the rioters (who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6) and Trump where at least one person was reading a tweet from Trump attacking Vice President Mike Pence over a megaphone during the riot.

Clinton, last month expressed solidarity toward the impeachment of Trump by saying it was essential to impeach him in the wake of the Capitol riots but warned that impeachment alone “won’t remove white supremacy from America”.

In an opinion piece for The Washington Post, Clinton wrote that the attack on the Capitol was the “tragically predictable result” of white-supremacist grievances fuelled by Trump.

She stressed that his departure from office, whether immediately or on Jan. 20, “will not solve the deeper problems exposed by this episode.”

Impeachment managers also introduced never-before-seen footage of Capitol Police officer Eugene Goodman apparently directing Senator Mitt Romney (Republican from Utah) away from the House side of the Capitol.

“It was obviously very troubling to see the great violence that our Capitol Police and others were subjected to. It tears at your heart and brings tears to your eyes.

“That was overwhelmingly distressing and emotional,” the 2012 presidential candidate later told reporters he had been unaware of his proximity to the rioters before viewing the footage.

The upper chamber in the U.S. Congress is unlikely to secure the two-thirds majority necessary to convict Trump which would bar him from holding office again.

However, only six Republicans voted that the trial itself was constitutional earlier this year. The Senate determined on Tuesday on a 56-to-44 vote that it has jurisdiction to try the former the president.

A two-thirds majority will be needed for conviction, meaning that at least 17 of the 50 Senate Republicans have to break ranks and join their Democratic colleagues.

Trump’s impeachment trial resumed on Wednesday as the U.S. Senate proceeds to hear arguments for and against convicting him of instigating last month’s violent attack on Congress.

House managers, who are the first to take the floor, plan to use previously unseen security footage to show “extreme violence” of the Jan. 6 assault and make clear how close Trump’s loyalists came to lawmakers, the Washington Times said.

Trump’s lawyers have urged the Senate to dismiss as unconstitutional and “self-evidently wrong” allegations that their client had a role in the attack on the Capitol by his loyalists who sought to prevent the congressional certification of his loss to Joe Biden.

Clinton renews call for abolition of U.S. Electoral College

Former U.S. First Lady and Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, on Monday renewed her call for the abolition of the country’s Electoral College.

She made the call in a tweet shortly after voting as an elector alongside her husband and former President Bill Clinton in New York.

“I believe we should abolish the Electoral College and select our president by the winner of the popular vote, same as every other office.

“But while it still exists, I was proud to cast my vote in New York for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris,” the tweet reads.

Recall that Hilary lost the 2016 presidential election to Donald Trump in spite of winning the popular votes.

Trump was elected after securing 304 electoral vote to Clinton’s 227.

The Clintons were joined by Gov. Andrew Cuomo alongside 26 other electors on Monday who formerly sealed Biden’s victory in the Nov. 3 election in New York.

The U.S. Electoral College is a group of 538 presidential electors who converge in state capitals every December of an election year to ratify the election of the President and the Vice President following the recently concluded general polls on Nov. 3.

The number of electors in each state is equivalent to the number seats in state’s legislature.

A candidate requires an absolute majority of 270 electoral votes to win the election.

But if no candidate secures the 270 votes, Congress holds a contingent election to pick the president and Vice President.

Biden’s election is expected to be ratified in the Electoral College held in all state capitals on Monday following the Nov. 3 general polls.

The former Vice President is projected to receive 306 electoral votes to be secured against Trump’s 232 electoral votes who is still contesting the election results.

BREAKING: Biden surpasses Clinton’s popular vote total

Donald Trump’s opposition in the U.S. 2020 presidential election has surpassed the 2016 popular vote total of Hillary Clinton.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Biden surpassed Clinton’s 2016 popular vote total even with millions of votes yet to be counted.

In 2016, Clinton’s popular vote total was pegged at 65.8 million but Biden has surpassed that figure.

Trump, as well, had earlier surpassed his 2016 vote tally.

He crossed his 2016 vote tally of 62.9 million votes with millions of votes yet to be counted.

This is the first time since 2004 an incumbent president would win more votes during re-election campaign than first campaign.

Clinton won more popular votes than Trump in 2016, but Trump went on to win the election.

The final outcome of the presidential election was decided by the electoral college.

Right now, Biden has polled 66.4 million (49.8%) popular votes while Trump has polled 64.8 million (49.6%).

Ex-US presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton reacts to Trump’s impeachment

Former United States presidential candidate, Hilary Clinton has reacted to the impeachment of the country’s president, Donald Trump by the House of Representatives.

She was previously a United States Senator from New York and is the wife of former President Bill Clinton, serving as First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001. In 2016, Clinton was her party’s presidential candidate; she won the national popular vote in that election by nearly 3 million votes, but her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, won the Electoral College and thus the presidency.

Clinton, on her verified Twitter account, said that Trump left the lawmakers with no choice but to impeach him because he abused his powers.

“One of our most precious rights as Americans is the right to determine who our leaders are, The president abused his powers to cheat in the next election and rob us of that right. Then he obstructed Congress to cover it up. Impeachment is the only remedy,” she tweeted.

Recall that the embattled President Trump was formally impeached by the House of Representatives, for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress on Wednesday, making him the third president to be impeached in the history of the United States of America.

The vote had followed weeks of testimony, related to his dealings with Ukraine. 230 to 197 votes in the Democratic-majority House saw to the impeachment of the US president

  • Trump blames China for hacking Clinton emails

Trump blames China for hacking Clinton emails

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Twitter early on Wednesday China hacked the emails of 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton but did not offer any evidence or further information.

“Hillary Clinton’s Emails, many of which are Classified Information, got hacked by China. Next move better be by the FBI & DOJ or, after all of their other missteps (Comey, McCabe, Strzok, Page, Ohr, FISA, Dirty Dossier etc.), their credibility will be forever gone!” he tweeted a little after midnight on Wednesday.

Trump said in an earlier tweet on Tuesday night: “China hacked Hillary Clinton’s private Email Server. Are they sure it wasn’t Russia (just kidding!)? What are the odds that the FBI and DOJ are right on top of this? Actually, a very big story. Much classified information!”

Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said such accusations were nothing new.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve heard similar kinds of allegations,” Hua told a daily news briefing.

“China is a staunch defender of cybersecurity. We firmly oppose and crack down on any forms of internet attacks and the stealing of secrets,” she added, without specifically mentioning Trump or Clinton in her answer.

U.S. intelligence officials have said Russia orchestrated the hacking of Democratic officials to meddle with the 2016 presidential election.

A U.S. federal grand jury indicted 12 Russian intelligence officers in July on charges of hacking the computer networks of Clinton and the Democratic Party.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating Russia’s role in the 2016 election and whether the campaign of Republican candidate Trump colluded with Moscow.

Russia denies meddling in the elections, while Trump has denied any collusion.

Trump said in April 2017 China may have hacked the emails of Democratic officials to meddle with the 2016 presidential election.

He also did not provide any evidence backing his allegation at that time.

China has repeatedly denied any accusations of involvement in overseas hacking attacks.

China and the U.S., whose ties are often fraught, are also currently in the midst of an increasingly bitter trade war.

Hillary Clinton updates Twitter bio after session with Chimamanda Adichie

Following her promise to Chimamanda Adichie at the PEN World Voices Festival, former US secretary of State Hillary Clinton has updated her Twitter bio. This comes after the organisers of the 2018 PEN World Voices Festival, rated Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Adichies session as their most popular.

Themed “Resist and Reimagine” the festival held last week in New York where Adichie had a dialogue with American Lawyer and Politician Hillary Clinton on “The future of Women and Girls around the world”

In a statement, Suzanne Nossel, CEO of Pen America wrote “We want to thank Chimamanda Adichie for making the closing evening of our 2018 PEN World Voices Festival so memorable and so moving. We put on hundreds of events each year and have been privileged to host many luminaries, but that night was an absolute stand-out along every dimension. “

“We cannot imagine anyone else who could have shared a stage with the legendary Hillary Rodham Clinton with as much poise and grace. Her warmth and openness was met in kind, giving us a glimpse of Secretary Clinton that few are fortunate enough to see. “

“We have been inundated with emails from those who attended and were so thankful to witness what has become our most popular and thought-provoking session. When we need the very best that the literary community has to offer, we are grateful we can turn to Chimamanda, and she never disappoints.”

Adichie’s session went viral on social media when she questioned why Hillary Clinton chose to lead her social media bio with her personal accomplishments. Adichie said she wanted to know if it was Clinton’s choice to first identify as wife.

Clinton’s Twitter bio now reads: “2016 Democratic Nominee, SecState, Senator, hair icon, Mom, Wife, Grandma x2, lawyer, advocate, fan of walks in the woods & standing up for our democracy.”

  • Daddy Freeze blasts Chimamanda Adichie over feminist comment against Hillary Clinton

Controversial on-air personality, Daddy Freeze has criticized award-winning author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, for saying she was “upset” that Hillary Clinton’s Twitter bio starts with “wife”.

Daddy Freeze said he is torn between anger and respect as he was once a huge fan of Adichie’s literary work.

His open letter addressed Adichie and posted on social media on Tuesday read:

“Dear Chimamanda, I used to be a huge fan until I read your interview with Hillary Clinton.

“Now I’m somewhere in the vesica pisces, torn between the enormous respect I had for the quality of your work and anger for what you are beginning to brandish.

“Let me set the record straight, I am not a fan of Hillary Clinton, so I’m not jumping in as her guardian angel. As a matter of fact, I completely disagree with most of the decisions she took while in office.

“Besides this however, woman to woman, what Hillary has achieved, in my opinion, you NEVER CAN, ‘no be beans’, so you suggesting how she should be addressed is what we Yorubas call ‘Iwosi’.

“Even Obama refers to himself as a dad first, husband second, so what’s your point exactly? Why can’t Hillary be addressed as wife first, if she so chooses?

“Could your utterances be stemming from inadequacies you need to attend to? You might consider investigating this.

“Now, let me warn you, there are no dividing forces greater than color, race, gender and tribe. These factors continue to ensure humanity remains segregated. This table you are shaking has vast consequences even you didn’t bargain for.

“People have been over the last two years, urging me to preach about Jesus being black and I never have, do you know why? Because I DONT CARE ABOUT HIS COLOR, it’s irrelevant, I care about HIS MESSAGE!

“In the same vein, I follow you simple because of your message, NOT BECAUSE OF YOUR GENDER OR COLOR OR TRIBE. So kindly keep the focus on the message, which in my opinion is excellent.

“Don’t mar it by demarcating yourself into a ‘gender’, unless of course you are employing this as a marketing tool, which, please be warned, has its own repercussions!”

Adichie sparked controversy after making the statement at the PEN World Voices Festival on Sunday.

  • Chimamanda Adichie’s `upset’ over Hillary Clinton’s `wife’ bio sets twitter on fire

Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Adichie is in the news again for her feminist views for being `upset’ by former US Presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton’s usage of `wife’ on her Twitter bio.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adichie, who is a renowned feminist fighting for the equality of male and female genders, asked the question at a PEN World Voices Festival lecture.

She set twitter on fire when she said that Hillary Clinton seemed to describe herself as a function of her husband, Bill Clinton.

Reacting to the interview, some Nigerians felt she took her feminism too far, adding that the question was intrusive and Hillary has a choice on her view on being addressed as a ‘Wife’.

Meanwhile, some others argued that the question was necessary for women to understand that they have to celebrate their achievements, not just on the home front, just like men.

Adichie to Hillary; “In your Twitter account, the first word that describes you is ‘Wife.’ And then I think its ‘Mom,’ and then it’s ‘Grandmother.”
“And when I saw that, I have to confess that I felt just a little bit upset.

And then I went and I looked at your husband’s Twitter account, and the first word was not ‘husband,” Adichie said.

She was curious as to why with all of Clinton’s career accomplishments; did her Twitter bio primarily identify her as a “Wife”.

Bill Clinton’s Twitter bio leads with, ‘Founder, Clinton Foundation and 42nd President of the United States’.

Adichie wanted to know if it was Clinton’s choice to first identify in relation to her husband, and if so, why?

“When you put it like that, I’m going to change it,” Clinton said, prompting roars from the crowd.

However, Clinton had pretty good explanation for why ‘Wife’ kicked- off her bio, which is that women should be able to celebrate both their accomplishments and their relationships.

Here are some of the reactions:
Popular blogger Linda Ikeji wrote @lindaikeji: I’m a big advocate for women empowerment, rights and indepencence but when I do marry, I’d proudly describe myself as a wife & proudly add my husband’s name to mine.

“Proudly! if you don’t believe in that as a woman, that’s fine too #differentstrokesfordifferentfolks,’’

@Linesandtimes tweeted, “Chimamanda said she was a bit upset by Hillary Clinton’s bio. Her intolerance for anything that does not align with her idea of feminism is really tragic.

“A woman can be defined as anything she wants to be seen as, what’s important is that it’s her choice.”

@Txtwistatornado wrote, “Lol I read the article, and I think it was great. I don’t think she disgraced Nigeria at all.

“She got Hillary Clinton to re-evaluate the message she sends to women. I believe in a happy medium as a woman so I’m good with this interview.IMO”
@SeunxTemi tweeted, “Not going to read all these. This is someone’s personal life Chimamanda thinks she has the right to criticize in such an unwarranted manner.

“Hilary Clinton is a Queen and what her bio states shouldn’t diminish her numerous accomplishments.”

@Realcalmday said, “If Hilary Clinton had a problem with what Chimamanda asked her, I believe she would’ve said so. Why are you people carrying the matter on your heads?”

@Chinewubeze_mc wrote, “Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie went too far with this her feminism issue during her interview with Hilary Clinton today.”

@Pengasonconcept tweeted, “So happy about how Hilary Clinton clarified Chimamanda on the true meaning of feminism.

“Just because a woman is up to the same task as an average man on earth doesn’t stop them from knowing their true responsibilities in life.”

NAN reports that Adichie’s feminism campaign has been a pivotal crux of her writing as her characters centre around powerful women who are usually dwarfed by the patriarchal system in their environments.

Her TedX talk ‘We Should All Be Feminists’ was sampled on American singer Beyonce’s hit song ‘Flawless’ and was also part of Beyonce’s performance routine at 2018 Coachella.

In 2017, Adichie released a small book titled – ‘Dear Ijeawele or A Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions’.

Recently, her novel ‘Americanah’, was recognised as one of 15 remarkable books by women that are shaping the way fiction was being written and read in the 21st century.”

  • U.S. threats of war with North Korea ‘dangerous, short-sighted – Hillary Clinton

Former U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Wednesday said “cavalier” threats to start war on the Korean peninsula were “dangerous and short-sighted”.

Clinton, however, urged the U.S. to get all parties to the negotiation table.

Clinton also called on China to take a “more out-front role” in enforcing sanctions against North Korea aimed at curbing its missile and nuclear development.

“There is no need for us to be bellicose and aggressive over North Korea,” Clinton told the World Knowledge Forum in Seoul, stressing the need for more pressure on North Korea and diplomacy to bring Pyongyang to talks.

Tension between Pyongyang and Washington has soared following series of weapons tests by North Korea and a string of increasingly bellicose exchanges between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

“Picking fights with Kim Jong Un puts a smile on his face,” Clinton said, without mentioning Trump by name.

Clinton also indirectly referred to Trump’s social media comments on North Korea, saying, “the insults on Twitter have benefited North Korea, I don’t think they’ve benefited the United States”.

The war of words has seen Trump call the North Korean leader “little rocket man” on a suicide mission, and vow to destroy the country if it threatens the U.S. or its allies.

In turn, the North called Trump “mentally deranged” and a “mad dog”.

Talks between the adversaries have long been urged by China in particular, but Washington and its ally, Japan have been reluctant while Pyongyang continues to pursue a goal of developing a nuclear-tipped missile to hit the U.S.

On Tuesday, Deputy Secretary of State, John J. Sullivan, said the U.S. did not rule out the eventual possibility of direct talks with North Korea.

The situation on the Korean peninsula was now touch-and-go point and a nuclear war may break out any moment”, North Korea’s Deputy UN Amb. Kim In Ryong had told a UN General Assembly committee on Monday.

In Seoul, the vice foreign minister said South Korea was considering levying its own sanctions on the North, although no decision had yet been made.
