Nigeria facing multiple security threats – Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Wednesday, said Nigeria was facing multiple security threats to its sovereignty from insurgents and bandits across the nation.

Governor Oborevwori stated this when he received the House of Representatives Committee on Defence, led by Hon. Babajimi Benson, at Government House, Asaba.

He said that his administration had set up an Ad-hoc Committee to address humanitarian concerns emanating from the crisis in Okuama community, adding that President Bola Tinubu and the Army high command had assured that no innocent citizen of the community would suffer as a result of the crisis.

The governor assured that efforts were in top gear to rehabilitate the people of the community.

He said: “Without doubt, this is one of the most important committees in the House because it has to do with the defence of our territorial integrity.

“In recent years, Nigeria has faced multiple threats to its sovereignty and security from bandits, insurgents and the like. But God, in His infinite mercy, has helped our leaders to navigate the situation.

“However, the problem persists. Therefore, Nigerians expect a lot from this committee. I have full confidence that this committee will do justice on the matter because we believe in justice.

“What people don’t know is that before this incident happened, there was a peace accord signed by the Okoloba community and Okuama community.

“Last Saturday, I went to Okuama community to see the place to know the extent of damage. Today, we have set up a committee, Ewu IDP Committee, by which we can rehabilitate the people. By next week, by God’s grace, they will commence work; so, we will do our best to ensure peace across the state.”

Earlier, the Chairman, House Committee on Defence, Hon Babajimi Benson, said they were in the state based on the resolution of the House to unearth the remote cause of the crisis that led to the death of 17 military men in Okuama community.

While condemning the act in its entirety, he called on the military to commence the process for the return of innocent citizens to Okuama community.

Hon Benson appealed to President Bola Tinubu to help in rebuilding the town as colossal destruction might have been recorded there, pointing out that the visit of the committee was not to victimize anybody but to help resolve the crisis amicably.

He commended Governor Oborevwori for synergizing with the President, the military and other stakeholders for the peaceful resolution of the crisis and the safe return of the Ewu king from detention.

Let’s unite to develop our State, Oborevwori tells Deltans+Photos

Delta State Governor, Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, Sunday, said his desire was for Deltans to be united for the overall growth and development of the state.

While congratulating Okotete on thanking God for a life of great accomplishments at 40, the Governor said giving thanks to God was not only an appreciation, but also prayer for more, and commended the celebrant for coming home to celebrate with her people which was an indication that she remained a grassroot politician.

He said: “I am very happy to be here today and it shows that I am a Governor for all Deltans. Seeing all the faces I know here shows that we are all one family in Delta State.

“I am Governor for all Deltans and I do not segregate. I want all of us to be united with the interest of developing Delta State.

“Leadership is turn by turn. The most important thing is to do what you should be remembered for while in office.

“Delta State will continue to enjoy peace, just as I promised in my MORE Agenda that we will continue to enhance peace and security.

“I thank you all for coming, even as I continue to count on your support.”

In her vote of thanks, the celebrant, who is a former National Woman Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Stella Okotete, said she was grateful to God for blessing her life over the years.

Okotete who hailed from Ekrerhavwen-Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state, thanked Governor Oborevwori for attending the thanksgiving, inspite of their political differences.

Earlier in his sermon, Archbishop Goddowell Avwomakpa urged Christians to cultivate the habit of praising God, adding that man would, in the course of life, encounter problems but would not be overwhelmed by them.

The cleric, who said that he dedicated the celebrant to God 40 years ago, thanked God for her exploits in life.

  • ONE YEAR IN OFFICE: Oborevwori to inaugurate multiple projects – Aniagwu

ONE YEAR IN OFFICE: Oborevwori to inaugurate multiple projects – Aniagwu

Delta State Commissioner for Works, Rural and Riverine Roads, Mr Charles Aniagwu says Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has lined up numerous projects for inauguration to mark his one year anniversary in office.

Aniagwu who spoke to journalists shortly after inspecting some completed and ongoing projects in Okpe and Ughelli North Local Government Areas of the state, said that Governor Oborevwori was desirous to deliver quality projects to Deltans in line with his MORE Agenda.

The Works Commissioner who was flanked by Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon and Functioning Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), Engr. Solomon Aghagba said: “We have today inspected four different roads, the first one being the Adagbrasa Road that starts from Warri-Sapele Express and terminates at the Effurun Eku Road.

“Off course, it has a spur to Oha and the second one is 13.07km, the other one is Esezi Road in Orerokpe which is a dual carriageway and it is a 1.2km. It is a road that cuts across a very major part of Orerokpe, the headquarters of Okpe Local Government Area of the state.

“We also inspected the Okan junction to Agbarho and from there we are now inspecting this one which is about 3.47km

“The reason why we are carrying out this inpection is that the governor has directed that we must ensure that contractors are achieving three important things which are:

“One is to ensure that we are able to meet up with the speed which means in line with the schedule of work; two is to ensure that Deltans also get value for money which is to say that whatever that we have put in the Bill of Engineering Measurement and Evaluation, BEME, is adhered to and third reason and very importantly, is to ensure that the quality or standard of work is such that Deltans get value for the money that we are deploying for these different jobs.

“The governor is very much interested in these jobs and ditto any other jobs across the 25 local government areas of the state.

“What we are doing now is that, ahead of our one year in office, we are looking at the number of roads that we are sure will be completed.

“The first one we went which is Adagbrasa Road, you could see that that one is completed and by the grace of God, the road will be part of the roads that we are going to be commissioning in the course of our one year in office.

“We have been assured by the contractor that these other three roads may likely fall in within that threshold but what is most important is that the contractor is not only on site, but he is actually moving with speed and l am very much impressed with the quality of work that they are bringing to bare.

“So, what it means is that this is not the time where a contractor gets a job and turn it to a bedroom and possibly begins to sleep.

“At our own end, by the grace of God, we will continue to see what we can do to meet up with the financial requirements of the jobs that we have awarded to contractors.

“For all these jobs that we are doing, we are taking cognisance of compensation and that is being handled by our valuers which is why you can see that a number of structures that are on the right of way have been removed.

“Let me use this opportunity to also appreciate our brothers and sisters that are leaving along these different corridors that we are constructing for showing a whole lot of cooperation and understanding.

“And because of that, you can see that the contractors are working more or less seamlessly, we have not heard report of anybody disturbing them and we must thank them for appreciating that government is desirous of bringing development to them and that the cooperation that they are giving us makes it quite encouraging for the government to continue to partner with them as major stakeholders in the development of Delta.

“Be rest assured that Governor Oborevwori has the 25 local government map on his table. He believes that what is good for the gease is also good for the gander and that is what he is doing and that is why you are seeing that a number of jobs are being completed in some other local government and new jobs are being initiated in other local government.

“The same amount of zest he is bringing to bare in the works sector is also what he is bringing to bare in the education sector, in the housing sector and of course in many other sectors so that at the end of the day, you will have holistic development across the length and breadth of the 25 local government areas of the state.”

  • Why Okuama/Okoloba crisis is great pain to us – Oborevwori

Why Okuama/Okoloba crisis is great pain to us – Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Friday, said his administration was sorely pained about recent crisis leading to the killing of some army officers and soldiers at Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state.

Governor Oborevwori stated this at Government House Annex, Warri when he received on a courtesy visit, the Chairman and members of the Board of Enquiry set up by the Defence Headquarters to probe the Okuama Killings.

The Governor, who narrated how the state managed the situation, said the State Government would do all it could to assist the Board on its assignment.

Governor Oborevwori further said that in order to honour the deceased officers and soldiers, he led a top level delegation of members of the State Security Council and members of the State Executive Council to attend the funeral of the slain officers and soldiers in Abuja.

While saying that a transparent investigation should be conducted to fish out the real culprits of the heinous crime, he said innocent citizens should not be made to suffer any further.

“I am very happy for this meeting taking place here today in Warri. Most people who spoke about the issue did so out of ignorance because they lacked the true knowledge of the facts of what happened. Setting up this Board of Enquiry is a good one.

“In my MORE Agenda, we said we are going to ensure peace and security, and for the first time in a long while, we celebrated Christmas without any hitches and I must thank security agencies in the state for a job well done.

“In Delta State, there are two bodies we don’t play with; the Advisory and Peace Building Council and the Peace Building and Conflict Resolution- because they are doing a lot to ensure enduring peace in the state.

“I told the Secretary to State Government to invite the Okuama/Okoloba people. So, l made it mandatory that the Chairmen of Ughelli South and Bomadi Local Government Councils to be in attendance, the members of the State House of Assembly who are representing the constituencies should also be in attendance and the Presidents- General of the communities should be in attendance.

“That meeting was held on the 7th of February and they signed a peace accord. So, we were not expecting anything negative when the military went there for a peace mission.

“In Delta State, we don’t encourage crisis. So, we want to assure you that which ever information you people want, we will give it to you and we will also come with our position paper to submit to you people before you leave.

“That will also guide you on the role that we have played as a state because if we don’t come with this position paper, you will not know the role that the state has played”, the Governor said.

Earlier, Chairman of the Board of Enquiry, Air Vice Marshal David Ajayi, said the Board was in the state to investigate the unfortunate incident that happened at Okuama.

Ajayi said: “We are here as a fact- finding mission and not to apportion blame. We are here to gather facts from security agencies, community leaders and community dwellers.

“This report will also help to ensure healthy communication that will enhance civil-military relations and ensure that economic activities thrive again in the affected communities.”

He called on the Governor to assist the Board in its enquiry to ensure that relevant stakeholders were invited to the give account of what led to the crisis.

  • EMMANUEL AZIKEN: Oborevwori and the New Narrative in Delta PDP

EMMANUEL AZIKEN: Oborevwori and the New Narrative in Delta PDP

    By Emmanuel Aziken

It was a new narrative in the history of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Delta State when the party leaders and elders passed a vote of confidence on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on February 29, 2024.

It was not as if it was the first time that a vote of confidence would be passed on a sitting governor of Delta State. The difference, however, was that it is the first time in the history of the party that a sitting governor would be winning broad support from all tendencies in the party.

All previous PDP governors of the state from Chief James Ibori through Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan and Senator Ifeanyi Okowa one way or the other were faced with internal party challenges.

Ibori who was the first PDP governor of the state particularly faced his challenges from those who claimed to have been equal founders of the party in the state.

The late Senator Fred Brume, Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi among others were leading dissenters against Ibori and would not have given themselves over to the kind of confidence vote that was passed on Governor Oborevwori on February 29.

Indeed, elements of the PDP were in the forefront of the prosecution of the alleged ex-convict saga that dogged Ibori in the latter part of his first term and for most of the second term. They were also cheerleaders when the former governor was chased abroad into the waiting hands of the British judicial system which sentenced him.

Governor Uduaghan who succeeded Ibori was faced with the problem of carrying the ‘burden’ arising from his blood relationship with his predecessor.

Indeed, elders who were hitherto otherwise supportive of Udua like Senator Edwin Clark turned against him because of the relationship with Ibori.

Uduaghan through his charm was able to mitigate the hostility within the PDP to some reasonable level. However, there were some who could not be pleased among whom were those who challenged him for the PDP ticket in 2007.

His successor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa was also faced with his own distresses with those who challenged him for the PDP ticket in 2014.

Okowa mysteriously brought some of them like Chief David Edevbie but carefully watching them until they exited.

However, unlike his predecessors, Governor Oborevwori appears to have either dissolved the cord of disharmony or put critics at bay through his street boy charm.

It was as such no surprise when the PDP Delta State Caucus, on Thursday, February 29, 2024, passed a vote of implicit confidence on him.

The motion for the vote of confidence, which was moved by Prince Ned Nwoko, Senator representing Delta North Senatorial zone and seconded by Senator Stella Omu, member of the PDP Board of Trustees and one time Senator who represented Delta South Senatorial zone in the National Assembly, was unanimously and overwhelmingly endorsed by the caucus.

The Delta PDP caucus meeting, which was attended by the Chairman of Caucus and State Chairman of PDP, Olorogun, Barr. Kingsley Esiso, former Governors Senator, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa and Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, former Deputy Governor, Sir Benjamin Elue, State Executive Working Committee members of the party, former and serving members of the State and National Assemblies and other State and National leaders of the party from across the State, expressed unreserved satisfaction with Governor Oborevwori and charged him to continue with the wonderful work he is doing in delivering the M.O.R.E Agenda of his administration to Deltans.

  • Faculty Relocation: Gov Oborevwori has good intentions for Ozoro varsity – Isoko Youths

Faculty Relocation: Gov Oborevwori has good intentions for Ozoro varsity – Isoko Youths

The Isoko National Youth Assembly (INYA) has called for calm over plans by the Delta State Government to move the faculty of Management Science of the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro, to Orerokpe.

INYA also declared that the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration has good intentions for the Ozoro University, and appealed to the people of Isoko Nation to support the governor’s efforts in boosting education in the state.

President of INYA, Comrade Eniwake Orogun, made the call after a visit to the Vice-Chancellor of the Delta State University, Ozoro, Prof. Jacob Oboreh, on Wednesday.

According to Orogun, the visit to Prof. Oboreh was part of ongoing consultation to douse the rising anger over the planned relocation of the faculty from Ozoro to Orerokpe in the Okpe Local Government Area of the state.

He said following the dialogue the INYA leadership had with the Vice-Chancellor and other top management of the institution, they were assured that the relocation of the faculty of management science would affect the size of the school.

“The Vice Chancellor informed us that His Excellency has good intentions for the university. The highlights from the nearly two hours meeting include: The faculty of management science (FMS), has 8 departments

“The admission quota of each of the 45 departments of the university is 50, whereas a few of the departments of FMS may occasionally be internally allocated some more numbers if other departments do not fully utilize their quota

“The relocation of this faculty will in no way shrink the size of the University in terms of numbers of students. 12 new science based programs have been designed to take off almost immediately which include electronic and telecommunications engineering, digital economy, cyber security, Data analytics, Information systems, nursing, public health etc.

“Three new faculties, namely, Basic Medical Sciences, health science, and pharmacy, have also been approved for takeoff by the governor. Several departments can be established in these new faculties, which have the capacity to further strengthen the student base of the institution.”

The INYA leadership, who also met with the Isoko North Council chairman, Hon. Christian Itire, noted that they have sufficient assurance that the Governor Oborevwori’s administration is committed to providing adequate resources for the university.

Comrade Orogun assured that INYA would continue to monitor and engage relevant stakeholders to ensure that all promises are kept and the people of Isoko Nation are not shortchanged in the current arrangement.

Present at the visit were the 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents of INYA, Comr. Ogege Moses and Comr. Asibeluo Orobosa; President, Ozoro Youth Assembly, Comr. Kesena Aguhevah and Chairman, NYCN, Isoko North Chapter, Comr. Johnson Vinyeze.
