The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially declared Governor Hope Uzodimma as the winner of the Saturday election conducted in Imo State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Uzodimma polled a total of 540,308 votes to defeat his closest opponent, Samuel Anyanwu, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the election.

Anyanwu polled a total of 71,503 votes while Athan Achonu of the Labour Party polled a total of 64,081 votes.

TNG reports Uzodimma won all 27 local government areas of Imo State and was declared winner by INEC returning officer, Abayomi Fasina, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti

“That you Hope Uzodimma of APC having satisfied the law is hereby returned elected,” Fashina declared.

Declaring the result of the Saturday’s off-cycle election, the State Returning Officer, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, said that Uzodimma polled 540,308 votes to defeat 17 other candidates.

Fasina, who is the Vice Chancellor, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, said that the PDP Governorship Candidate, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, polled 71,503 votes.

He also said that Sen. Athan Achonu of the Labour Party, came third with 64,081 votes, while Mr Anthony Ejiogu of APGA scored 6,392 votes to occupy the fourth position.

In a reaction, the APC State Collation Officer and Attorney-General of the State, Mr Cyprian Akaolisa, commended INEC and security agencies for the peaceful conduct of the poll.

“It is clear that INEC did their best to ensure a free and fair election, from the distribution of election materials to the conduct of the election, it was peaceful.

“Security agencies did their utmost best to ensure that the process was smooth and we had a credible, free and fair election.

“This victory is victory for Imo people.

“It is a victory for the continuation of the development the governor is providing for the people,” Akaolisa said in an interview.

However, the State Collation Officer for the Young Progressives Party, Mr Kingsley Nwahiri, expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the poll.

“The result of the governorship election that was declared today (Sunday) is a result of the  vote buying,” he said.

Nwahiri said that the decision on the next line of action would be taken by the national leadership of the party.

Earlier, Anyanwu had called for the cancellation of the election over alleged ballot box-snatching and violence.

He further claimed that security agencies assisted officials of INEC to ensure victory for the APC governor.

Similarly, Achonu had alleged that there were several infractions during the conduct of the election.

The Labour Party governorship candidate described the election as “democracy under attack”.

However, INEC’s Head of Voter Education, Mrs Emmanuella Opara, dismissed the allegation as unfounded.

Opara said the commission had yet to receive any official reports on vote buying, ballot-box snatching or any other malpractice.

  • Uzodimma, Anyanwu differ over Imo guber election

Uzodimma, Anyanwu differ over Imo guber election

Gov. Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, on Saturday expressed diverse views on the conduct of the Saturday governorship election in Imo.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that both candidates spoke shortly after casting their votes at their various polling units on amidst low voter turnout.

Uzodimma, who voted at 11:35a.m. at Polling Unit 032, Ekwenja Ukwu-Ozu ward, Omuma Community, Oru East Local Government Area, said reports he received showed that the election was peaceful in most parts of the state.

“The election, contrary to what they said on the social media, is going on free, fair and very peaceful.

“You can see how freely I have gone out to cast my votes and also how INEC was able to process my accreditation under few minutes.

“It is evident for all of us in the country to know that the patriotic people of the state are desirous of having Imo state blossom,” he said.

However, the governor urged those in the opposition allegedly sponsoring mischief and other forms of criminality to repent.

”Some of us are in politics to serve the people and are in politics for the interest of the people. We say things as they are really on ground.

“Some are out to confuse the populace. They just go to the social media and fabricate stories and publish.

“But when you visit the polling units, you will now see that there is peace there,” he said.

Uzodimma commended INEC and security agencies for ensuring proper deployment of material and personnel for the election.

“The entire space is manned and occupied and people are responding positively. I have not heard any knockout, so I think Imo state is safe and it is good to go.

“I have just voted and some people are still voting. At the end of the day, whatever God approved will be announced by INEC,” he said.

On his part, the candidate of the PDP, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, expressed worries over reports of alleged ballot box snatching in some areas of the state.

”Though they started very late which was the problem we had here where others started by 8:00am, I just cast my vote at about 10:25am.

”This is my home town and my people are excited to cast their votes because one of their own is coming out for election”, he said.

He alleged that materials and votes were catered away at about seven wards in Orlu.

He said similar incidents were reported at Orsu and parts of Oru West, wondering why opposition parties would not allow free and fair election in the state.

“We should not encourage hooliganism. When you bring people like that to help you win. That is not the type of society we want and a responsible government should not encourage such.

“Imo people are desirous of change but some people are trying to truncate it. It will never work,” he stated.

  • Lukman writes APC governors, warns against Ganduje’s endorsement

Lukman writes APC governors, warns against Ganduje’s endorsement

The National Vice Chairman of the ruling All progressives Congress (APC) North-West, Mallam Salihu Lukman, has written the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) following the purported report of endorsing Abdullahi Ganduje as the national chairman of the party.

The letter titled ‘APC National Chairman: PGF should serve as the Conscience of APC.’warned that such an endorsement would be unfair to President Bola Tinubu and Ganduje.

Lukman in the letter copied Bola Tinubu, members of the APC National Working Committee, and Ganduje.

The APC chieftain noted that he found it troubling that the APC governors under Uzodimma’s leadership could be thinking of adopting the former Kano governor as the next chairman.

“It is quite troubling that Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) under Your Excellency’s leadership is being reported to have decided on adopting Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to become the next National Chairman of APC.

“While it is within the right of Progressive Governors being a very critical power bloc within the APC to endorse any candidate for the position of National Chairman, to make such decision public, in whatever manner, is unfair to both President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other leaders of the party who are not members of PGF. It is even unfair to Dr. Ganduje who is being endorsed.

I have served PGF between August 2013 and February 2022 as Director General. I am fully conversant with the conventional approach towards managing consultations between PGF and the party. Whenever PGF is privileged to reach agreement with the President, being the party leader, on matters affecting the party, PGF takes necessary steps to first meet with the NWC or at the least the National Chairman.

“Where such decisions require pronouncement by organs of the party, PGF uses its influence within the party to negotiate the buy-in of members of the relevant organs. That has been the tradition.

As a member of NWC, I feel highly slighted that I am only encountering such endorsement in the media. Coming shortly after the resignation of Sen. Abdullahi Adamu and Sen. lyiola Omisore as National Chairman and National Secretary respectively who were accused of undermining organs of the party, it raises questions as to whether PGF under your leadership share the commitment to restore constitutional order in APC and return the party to its founding vision.

“Given the implication of such endorsement in terms of being unjust and unfair to the North Central region and given that the position of the National Chairman is zoned to North Central based on which zoning for leadership of National Assembly was decided, it simply suggest that the PGF has deviated from its traditional role of acting as the conscience of the party.

If PGF is to act as the conscience of the party, even if assuming as it is being promoted in the public that the endorsement is coming from President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the PGF I know would have taken every step to convince the President otherwise and if the President insisted, they would have shielded the President by owning the decision. But to handle the endorsement in the way it appears in the public is unfair to President Asiwaju Tinubu and unfair to Dr. Ganduje who is being alleged to have put so much pressure on the President, which is not true.

I want to strongly appeal to Your Excellency, as the PGF Chairman to kindly return PGF to its conventional role of acting as the conscience of the party by ensuring that the party always takes the right decisions, which will protect the interest of every member, every region and all interest.

“The PGF under Your Excellency’s leadership must not be seen to be promoting or condoning decisions that are liable to acts of injustice and unfairness to any member, section of the country or interest.”

Uzodimma made the announcement during a special meeting with critical Imo stakeholders, on Saturday in Owerri.

The governor said the free transportation, feeding and medical care was for civil servants.

He said other palliatives include the establishment of marketing and commodity boards, mass housing and recruitment of more teachers.

He expressed confidence that the measures would stimulate the economy, create additional jobs and enhance workers’  wages.

“Let me say, however, that although the impact of the fuel subsidy removal policy appears harsh in the short-run, it will, in the long run, bring positive results.

“There shall be an immediate upward review of the salaries and wages of workers in the state.

“The minimum wage is hereby raised to N40, 000 with discretionary consequential adjustments.

“At least your salaries would be able not only to take you home, but to also provide your basic necessities to enable you to make ends meet,” he said.

Uzodimma directed state Head of Service to work out the modalities for daily free meal for civil servants as well as free medical treatment in designated hospitals.

For farmers, he said the N5 billion revolving loan will be released immediately to stimulate production in the value chain.

“Farmers will also be encouraged to form cooperatives to facilitate organized farming.”

On teachers recruitment, he said it would be for all public schools.

“There will be recruitment exercises for new teachers from primary to secondary and tertiary levels to boost employment and income generation, particularly among our graduates.

“The government has approved bursaries for students in tertiary institutions,” he added.

He said the government would train 100,000 youths annually in digital skills through the Ministry of Digital Economy and E-Government.

“So far, 5,000 of them have been successfully trained and equipped with relevant kits and tools.

“Another batch of 15,000 are currently in training and they will graduate in a few weeks,” he added.

He assured retirees that the government would source funds to commence the payment of their gratuities from 2008/2009.

The governor also assured the stakeholders that efforts would be intensified at providing mass housing for Imo people, including the completion of the ongoing mass housing estates in Mgbidi, Anara and Nekede.

The Anglican Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev. David Onuoha, commended the governor for taking the lead in providing solutions to the suffering of the people.

  • Uzodimma’s focused leadership and Imo digital transformation – By Chimezie Amadi

Uzodimma’s focused leadership and Imo digital transformation – By Chimezie Amadi

    By Chimezie Amadi

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, took the reins of government in the Eastern Heartland when I was still with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) over three years ago. When I first met him over a decade ago, his charming personality and rare leadership qualities endeared me to him.

Uzodimma is a man with hallowed grace and a Midas touch. His most striking quality is his uncommon ability to think globally while acting locally, with exceptional street intelligence. Before he invited me to serve in his government, I had had the opportunity of working with him quietly at the background at strategic and operational levels.

On his election as governor, in one of our discussions, when he mooted the idea of running a tech-driven government and growing the Imo digital economy to diversify internal revenue generation drive, enhance job opportunities and tech diffusion in all sectors of the state’s economy, I immediately concluded that Imo is in a new deal and has gotten it right this time. This is because it takes a forward-looking leader and a revolutionary thinker to see the enormous benefit of a digital economy.

Now, working close to him full time, I see a visionary and purposeful leader, generational thinker, game-changer and kind-hearted, good listener. I also discovered that he was highly underrated by people not close to him.

When I took office, he demanded a policy thrust to encapsulate his digital agenda for the state and that gave rise to the development of the Imo Digital Economy Agenda (IDEA) 2022-2026.

Uzodimma’s five-year agenda to digitize the state will stimulate digital revolution, trigger investments in smart infrastructure and birth a viral smart economy and a connected city state. The Imo Digital Economy Agenda (IDEA) 2022-2026, is anchored on six strategic pillars: Digital Literacy and Skill, Solid Infrastructure, Service Infrastructure, Advocacy, Monitoring and Evaluation, Collaboration and Partnership. It involves connecting the over 600 autonomous communities in the 27 local councils of the state to the Internet. The policy was conceptualized to harness the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) potential, driving new solutions to developmental challenges, which would engender growth, essentially to foster competitiveness, enhance access to information and knowledge, as well as eradicate poverty and ensure social inclusion.

Having boasted that he is not in Imo to joke, the governor has taken up various ambitious projects, including roads infrastructure and healthcare.

The Owerri/Okigwe road, Owerri/Orlu road which have been completed, while Owerri/Mbaise road which is nearing completion, are visible testaments to his focused leadership.

In his acceptance speech after his inauguration in 2020, the governor had promised, among others, to take Health For All (HEFA) to the 27 local councils, to strengthen existing primary healthcare workforce in the state, as well as rehabilitate, renovate and equip all dilapidated community health centres in the state. These have proved not to be empty promises, as civil servants in the state now enjoy free medical services.

There is limited space to enumerate Uzodimma’s transformational agenda in Imo. But one that generations yet unborn will live to remember is the SkillUpImo Project.

SkillUpImo is fashioned to position Imo state as the digital hub of Africa, to birth a big Startup economy and connects Imo tech talents to the global gig economy. It has remained the biggest human capital developmental effort embarked upon by any state Government in modern time. In the SkillupImo programme Cohort 1, Uzodimma trained and equipped 5,000 Imo youths with Industry 4.0 tech skills and startup kits to enable them ply trade anywhere in the world while another set of 15,000 Youths are currently being trained in basic, intermediate and advanced digital skills in the ongoing SkillupImo programme cohort 2 .

Prof. Mohammed Ajiya, the President/Chief Executive Officer of Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), Abuja, an international centre for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) studies, captured the initiative in the following words: “The beauty of the digital economy is that you could be working for a company in America, Asia or Europe from the comfort of your home. SkillUpImo is one of those initiatives that target youths to prepare them for the digital economy space, which has contributed over 18 per cent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).”

Many tech giants are already buying into the project, while academies and examination bodies are offering certifications. Small wonder the training centres have become beehives of activities, even on public holidays. Many youths from the South South and South West geopolitical zones, as well as other states troop to the centres to enrol.

The youths, mostly graduates of other fields, are being trained on basic digital skills like computer appreciation, phone repair, Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) installation, and car tracking.

On intermediate digital skills, the youths are trained in digital marketing, graphics, video, photo editing and digital entrepreneurship. They are also trained in advanced digital skills such as cybersecurity, UI/UX, mobile app development, front-end and back-end development, blockchain technology, data analysis and project management.

The initiative is part of the move to align Imo with the Federal Government’s objective of diversifying the economy as encapsulated in the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) 2020-2030.

Interestingly, other ‘bigger’ states are copying the initiative, and Imo is happy to be the pioneer in the country.

As expected, Imo state was recently ranked number one in terms of digital innovation and entrepreneurship development among the states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by FATE Foundation in its State of Entrepreneurship Index Report for Nigeria. The index is a yearly measure of entrepreneurship development in Nigeria.

As many tech giants and even government agencies, such as National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), wait in the wings to grab graduands of SkillUpImo project, what the initiative needs now is support and sustainability.

Why initiatives fail in this part of the world is neglect. For sustainability, public-spirited individuals and businessmen are, hereby, called upon to support this initiative. Zinox Group set the ball rolling by providing support and jobs for the graduands. Others have keyed in. However, there is more to be done.

It will be a misnomer to think that Governor Uzodimma would abandon the project, because no mother abandons her child, let alone the favorite one –more so, now that he is being looked upon as one with the Midas touch in the Eastern Heartland, with projects and policies that are positively transforming Imo and creating jobs.

Since Uzodimma is still in his first term, with the nod of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), for another, Imo people should brace up for better days.

Adamu tasks APC Governors on adherence to party manifesto

Meanwhile, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, the APC National Chairman has charged governors elected on the party’s platform to adhere to its manifesto.

He gave the charge on Wednesday in Abuja, when the party’s governors under the agies of Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) met with the National Working Committee (NWC).

“For us, anything that we will want to say to you is adherence to the manifesto as much as you can.

“We have a general framework for the governance of the country and you represent those who fly the party’s flag.

“It is expected that whatever you do, you will have in mind the manifesto that the party gave the country, as Chief Executive Officers of states, you must key into this manifesto.

“But there are peculiarities, there are priorities you must have set and you are bound to do as much as you can to meet the expectations of those who voted for us,” Adamu said.

He said the party and the country generally were in a very difficult moment, adding that the governors had visited at a very difficult period with regards to the lifting of the fuel subsidy.

Adamu said the period would be very challenging, particularly to the governors because they were where it matters most.

“From national politics, you are the shock absorbers in the various states of the federation, you live with the people, you wake up with them and you work with them.

“The expectation is that you could have a better appreciation of their pains as citizens of this country. So, a lot of expectations will be on you as governors of the Federating units of this great country,” Adamu said.

He assured that the party’s leadership would continue to give the governors the needed cooperation.

“If you have any problem, turn to us and we will give you the best advice as we can, but whatever we do with you, you are the one wearing the shoes and know where it pinches,” Adamu said.

Speaking to newsmen at the end of the meeting, Gov. Hope Uzordimma of Imo said the governors were committed to the party’s idea and manifesto and the Federal Government under it.

He noted that everything contained in the party’s manifesto during its campaigns were meant to be done and carried out.

On the removal of fuel subsidy as announced by President Bola Tinubu in his inauguration speech, all presidential candidates during the campaigns committed to remove fuel subsidy.

“The immediate past President, Muhammadu Buhari before he left, made us to know that fuel subsidy is no longer sustainable. What we are talking about now is the implementation process,” he said.

He assured that the incumbent government of President Bola Tinubu was working out ways to implement the fuel subsidy removal to cushion the effect on the people.

“I have confidence in the ability of current president to navigate through the waters and take decisions that will be in the best interest of our people and the country as a nation.

On the leadership of the incoming 10th National Assembly, Uzodimma said Tinubu had not made proclamation for its leadership to be inaugurated.

Some of the governors at the meeting were Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi, Abduallahi Sule of Nasarawa State, Mohammed Bago of Niger and Gov. Uba Sani of Kaduna State.

Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe, Nasir Idris of Kebbi and Gov. Dapo Abiodum of Ogun was also at the meeting among others
