Panic as Nigerian doctor kills one, injures six at New York hospital

There was tension on Friday as a Nigerian medical doctor, Henry Bello, barged into the Bronx Lebanon Hospital Centre, New York, United States with an armed rifle, killing one and injuring six others.

According to the New York Police Department, Bello also opened fire on himself and died in the process.

The suspect, aged 45, was found dead on the 17th floor of the facility, the city police told NBC News.

The gunfire was first reported at 3pm on the eighth floor of the hospital and it was immediately placed on lockdown as police launched a floor-by-floor search for the armed intruder.

This would appear, preliminarily, to be a former employee dressed in a hospital jacket similar to what you would see a doctor wearing, who is familiar with the hospital, which makes the situation a lot more problematic,” officials said, adding that Bello had a rifle, possibly an AR-15 type assault rifle, and had previously worked at the hospital.

Just before 4pm, the Assistant Commissioner for Communication for the NYPD, Peter Donald, announced the search for the suspect was over.

One shooter is deceased at the hospital,” he said.

Before killing himself, Bello tried to start a fire on the 16th floor that was doused by the hospital’s sprinkler system, a senior official with direct knowledge of the incident said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced in a tweet later that the situation was not an act of terrorism.

  • Sri Lanka landslides: Death toll hits 202, hospitals to be evacuated

The death toll in Sri Lanka’s devastating floods and landslides reached 202 while 96 people were still missing, the Disaster Management Centre said on Wednesday.

Sixty-three people were injured and seeking treatment in state hospitals while over 600,000 people have been affected.

Severe rains and strong winds which lashed out across Sri Lanka since Friday have caused major floods and landslides in many areas of the island with the worst affected being the southern district.

As water levels are receding, tri forces along with rescue teams have now launched a massive cleanup operation in order to restore normalcy in the affected areas.

“No less than 83,200 people are seeking shelter in safe locations and many are unable to return to their homes due to fully damaged or partially damaged houses,’’ it said.

According to the World Health Organisation, no less than 16 hospitals in flood hit Sri Lanka have been evacuated fully or partially as facilities have been directly affected by the floods or exposed to landslides.

“With the increasing number of displaced people and lack of space in safe locations, temporary shelter and ensuring access to health services is needed.

“Disease surveillance and vector control is also a priority with the risk of communicable diseases,’’ the statement said.

It added that over the past few months, health partners have recorded a significant increase in dengue cases (53,200 cases with over 125 deaths) compared to annual data from 2016.

“The Ministry of Health has deployed medical teams mainly in Kalutara, Ratnapura and Galle districts in southern Sri Lanka,’’ the UN update noted.

Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena on Tuesday said the reconstruction of 640 fully destroyed houses and 5,329 partially destroyed houses will start soon.

Sirisena who also visited the worst affected district of Ratnapura on Sunday ordered authorities to provide maximum and immediate relief to the victims and ordered the treasury to release funds to compensate those affected.

International aid has also poured into the country with China, the U.S., Britain, Pakistan, India, Australia, Norway and the EU donating funds and sending relief supplies.

The Sri Lankan government has shown gratitude to the international community for its assistance at this hour of grief.

Meanwhile as Cyclone Mora has now moved away from the island country, the Meteorology Department said on Monday that the possibility of heavy rain and strong winds will reduce by coming week.

However, it said fairly strong winds about 50 km/ph could be expected over some parts of the districts.

  • Manchester Attack: Queen Elizabeth visits injured victims in hospital, expresses shock

Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday visited several children injured in the terrorist attack at Manchester Arena, meeting patients and staff at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

The royal family published photographs of the queen meeting teenagers Millie Robson and Evie Mills, aged 15 and 14, and 12-year-old Amy Barlow at the hospital.

Several children were among the 22 people who died in Monday’s attack at the end of a concert by U.S. singer Ariana Grande, including an eight-year-old girl.

The queen earlier said she was “shocked by the death and injury in Manchester of so many people, adults and children, who had just been enjoying a concert.”

She paid tribute to the emergency staff and expressed “admiration for the way the people of Manchester have responded, with humanity and compassion, to this act of barbarity.”

In another development, the police said the arrests of eight suspects still in custody are “significant” in the investigation of the network behind the Manchester Arena terrorist attack.

Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said said searches at several addresses in Manchester and other areas have yielded “very important” items assisting the investigation of Monday’s attack, which killed 22 people and injured dozens.

“I want to reassure people that the arrests that we have made are significant, and initial searches of premises have revealed items that we believe are very important to the investigation,” he said.

Hopkins said leaked forensic photographs published by the New York Times overnight had “caused much distress for families that are already suffering terribly with their loss.”

However, he declined to comment on reports that his force has stopped sharing intelligence on the Manchester attack with the U.S.

  • Rivers Government shuts down hospital over missing 3-week-old baby

The Rivers State Government has shutdown the Churchill Primary Health Centre in Port Harcourt. The move came after the alleged disappearance of a three-week-old baby, who was brought in for immunization.

The Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Agiriya Harry said the Health Centre was shut down because of the activities of hoodlums who claim to be sympathizers of the family of the missing baby.

Harry said the police were now investigating to try and unravel the circumstances surrounding the alleged missing child.

What we can tell you is that yes, a baby was missing and from our own investigations, we discovered that the said mother of the child was careless.

It was wrong for her to have handed over her child to some one she does not know and then she comes and put the blame on the matron.

We had to shutdown the hospital because when the thing happened instead of her to go and report the matter at the police station, she went and told her husband who we understand is a tout in Churchill.

The husband then led other members of his group and unleashed mayhem in the hospital,” he said.

He confirmed that some members of staff at the facility were invited for questioning and had since been released.

He advised nursing mothers and guardians to keep an eye on their children and wards whenever they visit any Primary Health Care centre.

The elder Bush has been in declining health for several years and was hospitalised for several weeks in 2012.

  • Patients shun general hospital over dilapidated structures

Patients shun general hospital over dilapidated structures

The Chairman, Caretaker Committee, Dambam Local Government Council of Bauchi, Mr Mohammed Jauro, says patients in the community now travel far to seek medical attention due to dilapidated structures in Dambam general hospital.

Jauro confirmed this in an interview with newsmen on Sunday at Dambam.

He appealed to the State Government to address the situation in order to reduce the hardship of the people in the community.

According to him, the structures and environment of the general hospital is forcing most patients to travel about 30 kilometres to Azare to seek for medical attention.

“The structure is dilapidated and the environment is so bushy that patients prefer to travel to Azare for medical attention.

“The staff no longer discharged their duties as patients are not visiting the hospital because of the dilapidated nature of the facility,’’ he said.

However, Jauro said that the local council was focusing more on the provision of portable water to the rural communities by repairing of boreholes.

He also appealed to the state government to rehabilitate roads that link Dambam to other communities in order to boost economic activities of the people.

The chairman appreciated the District Head of Dambam for his immense contributions and support to the development of the area.
