Buhari’s minister narrates how hospital abandoned him while in coma over non-payment of deposit

Ex- Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has narrated that he almost died in a hospital because of the non-payment of the admission deposit.

Dalung said the hospital was a reputable one that he used regularly for medical checkups but failed him at his lowest time.

The ex-minister said this on Friday, in a series of posts on X, saying he fell ill on Wednesday and went to the unnamed hospital for treatment.

Dalung said he met the doctor and he became unconscious shortly after meeting him but he was abandoned.

Narrating his ordeal, Dalung said he was abandoned for four hours because he could not pay the deposit.

He disclosed the illness aggravated as he became unconscious and spent another seven hours in coma.

He said that despite holding his medical records, the hospital refused to give him treatment because he had yet to make an admission deposit.

”I was ferried into emergency ward but abandoned for over 4 hrs due to non-payment of admission deposits. Regained partial consciousness later did the transfer of deposit,” Dalung wrote.

“I was then admitted into the ward and given medical attention. This is the hospital that has my medical records.

“The last medical checkup I did about two months ago was there, but suddenly, I became a stranger because of non-payments of deposits even with the so-called name.

“After that, I fell into unconsciousness again for about 7 hours. To God be the glory, I have been discharged after three days and recovering.

“Were it not for partial consciousness to pay the deposits, I would have been Mr. late. Many Nigerians have gone this way. Where is our humanity?”

He stated that it took the intervention of the Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, for the situation to be addressed.

“My security details called the Plateau State SSG about the situation, who informed the Governor @CalebMutfwang.

“He directed the SSG to visit me and access the situation. Which he did immediately. Also, some top political friends with LG Chairmen were in the hospital. It’s well,” he added.

  • Abuja sextuplets discharged, hospital seeks support for them

Abuja sextuplets discharged, hospital seeks support for them

The National Hospital, Abuja on Thursday discharged the sextuplets delivered on Jan. 30.

Mrs Precious Nwachukwu had the children after 13 years of marriage.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Muhammad Mahmud, while handing the babies over to the parents and other helpers, said that the successful delivery of the babies and their care was a good feat recorded by the hospital.

He also said that the babies, who had gone through certain stages of care to ensure that they were healthy, were given the best chances of survival by the neonatal unit of the hospital.

“It really says a lot about their commitment and dedication to practice and that has shown us that in Nigeria, we have people, the knowledge and skill to really do something like this.

“The doctors and nurses stood by these children and one amazing thing was the fact that they had to increase the staffing of this facility to ensure that these children really have the best chances to survive.

“The least weight of these children was at 850 grams and, within this one month, the one with the lowest weight had gotten to 1,300 grams, that’s 1.3 kgs. One of them got up to two kgs.

“We want to assure Nigerians of the resoluteness of the staff of this hospital to do whatever it is they can, to push the frontiers of healthcare forward to greater heights.”

Mahmud also applauded the family for keeping hope alive all these years and pushing themselves in spite of all the challenges they encountered.

“We congratulate the family now that we are releasing these blessings to you.

“We pray that God sees you through their upbringing, from their feeding to their housing, clothing, to education and to the best of the characters that will actually be able to make impact.”

He commended the philanthropists who had come to assist the family, adding that the family still needed more support from all Nigerians to be able to properly take care of the children the way they should be cared for.

The Chief Consultant Neonatologist, Dr Mariya-Mukhtar Yola, said that birthing and caring for the sextuplets was indeed one of the rarest occasions the unit had had.

She said that at birth, all the babies had special health challenges thereby needing respiratory support, and support with sugar levels, temperature, feeding, blood and even infection prevention.

She said that to the glory of God, they had all grown way beyond their birth weight, adding that the hospital had a strict follow up plan for them to support them.

“Ideally, they could have waited longer to gain weight, but because of the exigencies of society and the cost constraints, they were discharged early. But, again, they are fit to go home.

“So, we’ll be following them up initially twice in a week, and then eventually weekly and even longer times as they mature.

“There are still a lot of challenges ahead, because they are going to be needing more medication, some blood transfusions along the way. So, they still need a lot of support from people and well-wishers.”

The father of the babies, Mr Ifeanyi Nwachukwu, appreciated the hospital for caring for the wife from four months into the pregnancy up till delivery.

He also thanked them for taking care of the babies who were pre-term, till they were fit to be discharged.

He further appreciated well-meaning Nigerians who have come to support them, adding that more was still needed to bring the children up.

“We really give glory and praise to God for a time like this and we appreciate all the amazing staff that had been there for us and all who have come to support us.

“We need the help of the teeming Nigerians and the amazing mother we have up there in the person of the First Lady, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu. We have named the last daughter after her.

“We really desire that you come to our aid, the home that we are taking these children to now is a concern, how to sustain them to be good citizens of Nigeria is a concern, but I know that you all can help us.

“I know that we are not alone in this journey, the entire Nigerians, the government of the day which renew hope at all time, this is the time to renew hope for this family,” he added.

The babies – four girls and two boys – were conceived through In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and were delivered at 30 weeks through Caesarean Section.

SDGs: FG hands over 100-bed Mother and Child Hospital to Kebbi, Kogi States

Ongoing efforts towards ensuring improved well-being of Nigerians gained a boost as Federal Government through the office of the Senior Special Assistant on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs) formally handed over the 100-bed capacity Mother and Child Hospital to Kebbi and Kogi State Governments, respectively, amidst cheering ovation.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire who spoke during the commissioning ceremony held in Kebbi State, pledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s resolve to closely work with sub-national governments in delivering key interventions to fast-track the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals across the country.

The state-of-the-art 100-bed Mother and Child Hospital located in Tsamiya Village in Kebbi State was commissioned by Governor Nasri Idris of Kebbi State on the 25th January, 2024.

In the same vein, the 100-bed capacity Mother and Child Hospital which was handed over to Kogi State Government is located at Okene, and was commissioned by Governor Yahaya Bello who showered encomium on the Presidency for the laudable achievements recorded through the office of the Senior Special Assistant on Sustainable Development Goals.

Each of the two facilities has Operating Theatre, Labour Room, Recovery Rooms, Children Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Private and General Wards, Scanning Room, Consultation Rooms, and Laboratory, among others.

Some of the State of the art facilities installed are: Ultra-Scan Machine, Vacuum Extractor Delivery Set, and an Emergency Cart with full complements.

According to Princess Orelope-Adefulire who was a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, the MCC is directly linked to the achievement of SDG-3 on ‘Quality Health and Well-being for all’, as well as other cross-cutting SDGs.

While noting that the hospital was built and equipped to international standards, she disclosed that the hospital commissioned in Kebbi State is one of over 40 units of 100-Bed Mother and Child Hospitals constructed and fully equipped across the country by OSSAP-SDGs.

Orelope-Adefulire who extolled the leadership virtues of Mr. President said: “Let me, from the outset, appreciate President Tinubu for his sterling leadership and commitment to working closely with sub-national governments to deliver key interventions to fast-track the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria.

“In the same vein, I would like to most sincerely thank Governor Nasri Idris for his unwavering commitment to the socio-economic transformation of Nigeria and our collective desire to achieve the SDGs in Nigeria.

“Based on President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, we are committed to prioritising key interventions with multiplier effects on multidimensional poverty, such as basic healthcare, vocational skills development, and education provisioning.”

According to her, with the COVID-19 pandemic challenging our healthcare system, strategic interventions, such as the Mother and Child Centre, have become imperative.

“Indeed, the primary and secondary effects of the COVID-19 pandemic could reverse decades of human development gains and undermine the achievement of the SDGs unless immediate action is taken and sustained,” Princess Orelope-Adefulire noted.

In his remarks, Governor Nasri Idris showered encomium on Orelope-Adefulire for delivering the laudable project in Kebbi State and President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering commitment to improving the health sector.

He expressed optimism that the project would help in reducing child and maternal mortality as well as improving maternal health within the state and, by extension, the neighbouring Benin Republic.

He added that the State Government would build Staff Quarters to support the services at the hospital and help mitigate the accommodation challenges that may be encountered by the Doctors and Nurses who will be engaged in the hospital.

  • Hospital detains mother, her triplets over inability to pay N352,350 delivery bill

Hospital detains mother, her triplets over inability to pay N352,350 delivery bill

A private hospital, Praise and Grace Hospital and Maternity, Enugu, has detained Mrs Joan Orajiobi and her triplets over the family’s inability to pay delivery bill of N352,350.

Orajiobi, a native of Nnewi in Anambra, gave birth to two girls and a boy in the hospital in Enugu on New Year day.

Orajiobi, who lives at Ologo Quarters, Uwani Enugu, said she had been discharged since Jan. 8 but held by the hospital due to their inability to complete the hospital bill.

She said the hospital billed them a total of N482, 350, but that her husband was only able to pay N130, 000, remaining balance of N352, 350.

“The bill amounted to that because I gave birth through Caesarian Section (CS).

“I am a hair dresser. I have two girls already before this pregnancy came in May, but I never knew I was pregnant with triplets until the scan which showed that l was carrying twins.

“I am pleading to Nigerians, organisations especially the governors of Enugu and Anambra States, to come to my rescue and assist us with financial support. I want to go home and take care my children.

“Anybody that is touched by our condition can reach and assist us through my husband’s Access Account Number 0043854232, Account Name : Nchekwube Orajiobi C. and his WhatsApp 08065846537,’’ she pleaded.

She added that she was always touched seeing other patients that came after them leaving the hospital while they were held because they could not pay.

The husband, Mr Cornelius Orajiobi, a trader, said they both hailed from Obiofia in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

He said he was excited to have triplets but regretted that it would be difficult for him and his wife to take care of the babies in terms of feeding.

“Nigerians should please assist us because this gift is bigger than what we can cater for alone

“The N130,000 I deposited came from friends and well-wishers while I borrowed some.

“Apart from the medical bill, I need what I will use to bring up these kids,’’ he pleaded.

When contacted, the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Shedrack Emeribe, told NAN that he operated on Orajiobi without a deposit from the family.

He added that it was after four days of the operation that her husband made deposit of N60,000 before making it up to N130,000.

He explained that all the things they were requested for the delivery were not provided, stressing that the hospital provided it for them.

“I told the husband to make initial deposit of N150,000 but he never paid a dime till few days after CS. But I have to save those lives,” he said.

Strange woman steals newborn baby at Lafia hospital

A yet-to-be identified woman stole a new-born baby boy at the postnatal ward of Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Lafia, Nasarawa State on Tuesday.

Mother of the one-day-old baby, Mrs Wosilat Suleiman, told newsmen that she was delivered of the baby early on Tuesday through Caesarean Section.

“My relation that was looking after me introduced the strange woman she met in the ward to me before she went home to pick something.

“She told me that the woman would take care of me and the baby before she returned from the house.

“My relation thought the woman had a patient at the ward and she trusted her to help us before she returned.

“The woman told me she wanted to bathe the baby and disappeared with him,’’ Wosila lamented.

She appealed to relevant authorities to help her to find her baby as she was still going through pains.

Reacting to the incident, the hospital management expressed regret that the theft happened in spite of strict security measures put in place in the facility to protect patients and staff.

The hospital’s Acting Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, Dr Mohammed Salihu, said it was the first time such theft was witnessed in the hospital.

He explained that Wosilat was delivered of the baby at about 3 a.m. and the baby was handed over to her relation before mother and child were transferred to the postnatal ward.

He added that unfortunately the relation of the patient entrusted a strange woman to look after her sister on account that she wanted to pick something from the house.

He said further that the hospital management had reported the matter to the police and investigation was on-going to unravel the case.

“Already the relation of the mother of the baby has been arrested and some of our staff on duty were invited by the police for questioning,’’ he said.

Salihu promised that management would review the CCTV footage in the hospital to arrest the culprit.

Israeli army says it has opened door leading to tunnel under hospital

The Israeli army says it has broken open the sealed blast-door at the end of a suspected Hamas tunnel under the al-Shifa hospital in the Gaza Strip.

The military published two pictures on social media platform X, formerly called Twitter, Tuesday evening showing the open door in a tunnel.

What exactly is behind the door remained unclear at first.

“Just through this door, underneath the Shifa Hospital, are Hamas’ terrorists tunnels.

“Here’s the PROOF of Hamas’ terrorism festering underneath hospitals,” the Israel Defense Forces said in their post on X.

However, the photographs were published without context and could not be independently verified.

The military suspects a command centre of the Islamist Hamas under the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip.

Buildings in the vicinity of the hospital were also suspected.

According to the army, a shaft uncovered a few days ago in the grounds of the embattled hospital led to a tunnel, at the end of which there was a locked “explosion-proof door” after 55 metres.

Israel says the tunnel leads to a network of Hamas tunnels and bunkers.

In spite of international criticism, Israeli soldiers have been engaging in combat operations in and around the Shifa hospital for days.

Israel accuses Hamas of misusing the hospital for “terrorist purposes.”

    But Hamas denies this.

  • War: Gaza’s biggest hospital now ‘death zone’  – WHO

War: Gaza’s biggest hospital now ‘death zone’  – WHO

A joint team of United Nations and World Health Organization workers on an “assessment mission” to Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City called the hospital a “death zone” and said the situation is “desperate,” according to a statement released by the WHO Saturday.

The humanitarian team found a mass grave at its entrance, which they were told contained the bodies of 80 people. The hospital, which has been without clean water, fuel, food or medical supplies for the past six weeks, also contained signs of shelling and gunfire, according to the statement.

Some are unable or unwilling to leave Al-Shifa: 291 patients and 25 health workers remain. Damage and lack of key resources at the hospital had caused it to “essentially stop functioning as a medical facility,” the WHO statement said, adding that medical and solid waste piled in the corridors. Many injured patients’ wounds were severely infected due to the absence of sanitation and infection control measures at the hospital, it said.

The statement added that evacuation plans for patients to hospitals in the south are being “urgently developed” by humanitarian organizations, but the ability to carry them out is “pending guarantees of safe passage by parties to the conflict.”

The World Health Organization said Sunday that it and its partners are making plans to evacuate the remaining 25 health workers and 291 patients at Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital, where conditions continue to deteriorate.

The hospital is no longer operational and is no longer admitting new patients and has become what a United Nations humanitarian assessment team called a “death zone,” the WHO said.

“Over the next 24–72 hours, pending guarantees of safe passage by parties to the conflict, additional missions are being arranged to urgently transport patients from Al-Shifa to Nasser Medical Complex and European Gaza Hospital in the south of Gaza,” the WHO said. However, the organization stressed that the latter two hospitals are also overwhelmed, and an influx of patients will “further strain overburdened health staff and resources.”

The WHO called for immediate efforts to restore functionality at Al-Shifa and other hospitals to provide urgently needed services in Gaza. “The extreme suffering of the people of Gaza demands that we respond immediately and concretely with humanity and compassion,” the WHO said.

Hundreds fled on foot from Al-Shifa Hospital towards the southern Gaza Strip amid conflicting reports from health officials and the Israeli Defense Forces about who ordered an evacuation. Some rode in horse-drawn carts while others were pushed in wheelchairs.

Dr. Ramez Radwan described seeing bodies in the streets as they walked on the road leading from the hospital through Gaza City.
