Edo Assemble probes delay in opening hospital inaugurated by Buhari 2yrs ago

The Edo Assembly has constituted a seven-man committee to investigate the delay in opening of the ultra-modern Central Hospital, Benin for use, two years after President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated it.

The ad-hoc committee has Damien Lawani, (APC-Etsako Central ) as Chairman and Ojo Aisen, (APC-Owan West), Foly Ogedengbe (APC-Owan East) and Iyoha Osaigbovo (APC-Oredo East) as members.

Others are Sunday Osazemwinde (APC- Ovia North East), Godwin Adenomo (APC-Ovia South West) and Monday Ehighalua (PDP-Esan West).

The constitution of the committee followed a petition by a group of Civil Society Organisations known as “Talakawa’s Parliament” to the house.

The group, led by Mr Kola Edokpayi, on Monday protested to the house of assembly, and presented its petition over the delay, saying the hospital had been taken over by rodents.

It noted that the hospital built by the colonial masters was demolished to pave way for the construction of the new one that had not admitted a single patient even with the modern equipment.

The Speaker, Kabiru Adjoto, said the terms of reference of the committee included inviting the contractors involved in the supply of the hospital equipment for interrogation.

Adojo mandated the committee to also invite any other person that could give useful information on why the hospital was not functioning.

“The committee is expected to submit its report to the house for consideration within two weeks,” he said.

Meanwhile, a bill for re-enactment of a law prohibiting the existence and membership of secret cults in the state has been referred to the House Committee on Rules and Business.

It was referred to the committee for further legislative inputs ahead of its consideration and passage into law.

  • Three months after: Baby reunites with parents as Ambode’s wife clears hospital bill

The joy on the faces of the Oaikhenas knew no bounds on Wednesday when they were informed that wife of Lagos Governor, Abimbola Ambode had cleared the hospital bill of their child three months after delivery.

For the first time since he was born in February 2018, Baby Ighodalo Oaikhena joined his family at their home in the Ikeja area of Lagos State on Wednesday.

Recall that The Punch had earlier reported that Ighodalo was born premature at the Ifako General Hospital together with his twin sister.

The twins were taken to a private hospital, Inton Hospital, Ogba, Ikeja, where they were placed in incubators.

While the baby girl died in the first week, Ighodalo made it alive from the incubator and was put in a nursery.

The baby’s father, Michael Oaikhena, a driver; and the mother, Roseline, a teacher, had told our correspondent that they could not raise the N1.2m bill they incurred in the course of the treatment.

Michael had said despite the family paying N550,000 out of the bill, the hospital had insisted on collecting the N650,000 balance before releasing the baby.

He further alleged that the hospital threatened to take the child to an orphanage if the balance was not paid on time.

Although the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Mr Akeem Mustapha, denied the orphanage allegation, he insisted on the payment of the bill.

However, on Wednesday, a team of aides, acting on the instruction of Mrs. Ambode, visited the hospital and cleared the bill.

It was an emotional moment as the mother of the child, Roseline, broke down in tears of joy.

She did not believe that she would be taking the baby home as she kept asking, ‘Am I really going home with my baby today?’ The aides to the governor’s wife were moved as well, as some of them fought back tears,” a source, who was at the hospital, said.

Michael confirmed the development in a telephone conversation, adding that he was at work when he was called that his baby had been released.

He said, “As I speak to you, we are going home with the baby. I was really happy when I got a call from an aide to the governor’s wife that my baby would be going home today (Wednesday). I went there and met them with my wife and by then, the money had been paid. I am now in a car with my baby. I am really happy and I appreciate the governor’s wife for this. I wish I could see her and hug her for the gesture.”

The Assistant Director, Public Affairs, Office of the Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Folashade Kadiri, in a statement on Wednesday, confirmed the payment.

She said, “Mrs Ambode’s attention was drawn to a publication in the PUNCH Newspaperof Wednesday, May 30, 2018, suggesting the detention of a baby for the past three months due to the inability of his parents to pay the medical bill.

The governor’s wife had immediately directed the payment of the bill to enable the baby to reunite with his parents.

The payment of N650,000 was made by the Asst. Director, Public Affairs, Office of the wife of the Governor, Mrs Folashade Kadiri, who also effected the baby’s release.

The elated mother, Mrs Roseline Oaikhena, who was in tears, could not believe that she would be returning home so easily with her baby after the child’s three months compulsory stay in hospital after delivery.”

  • Lagos hospital detains baby for three months over unpaid bills

Lagos hospital detains baby for three months over unpaid bills

…vows to register it at an orphanage if bills are not cleared

A Lagos based hospital, Inton Hospital has refused to hand over a baby, Ighodalo to his parents, Mr Michael and Mrs Roseline Oaikhena for three months now over an unpaid medical bill of N650,000.

According to findings, the hospital has also allegedly vowed to put the baby in an orphanage unless the debt was cleared.

According to a report by The Punch, Roseline, a private primary school teacher, had given birth to a set of twins on February 10, 2018, at the Ifako General Hospital, Lagos.

The babies, which were premature, were reportedly taken to Inton, where they were put in an incubator at the rate of N300,000 per week.

After one week, the female child reportedly died, while the surviving boy continued treatment at the intensive care unit of the facility at the rate of N150,000 per week.

The child’s father, Michael, a driver, said the bill later rose to N1.2m.

He said, “My wife and I have been married for about two years. When she conceived, she went through a lot of stress due to the nature of her job and at a point, a doctor advised her to go for bed rest.

She gave birth at the Ifako General Hospital when the pregnancy was about six months. We were unable to get an incubator at the hospital and our search for one in Lagos public hospitals proved abortive.

She gave birth around 1pm and when we could not find any public hospital with an incubator, we settled for Inton Hospital. We got there around 11pm; their bill was N300,000 per week.

However, after a week, we lost the female baby and we started paying N150,000 per week. The surviving baby has now been moved from the incubator to a nursery, where he has been for over three months.”

He explained that the mother had been visiting the hospital to give the newborn baby food, adding that the child was being held over the N650,000 medical bill that the family owed.

The Edo State indigene said one of the doctors at the hospital recently called him and threatened that the child could be moved to a motherless babies’ home if the balance was not paid.

The doctor said since we had not met up with our financial obligations, they might not be able to keep the baby any longer and will take him to a motherless babies’ home. He said the baby had a high risk of contracting an infection because he is in a place where they treat sick children,” he added.

The wife, Roseline, expressed sadness that her baby could be taken to an orphanage while she was alive.

The 28-year-old noted that efforts by the family to raise funds through social media had been abortive, adding that she lived in pain every day.

She said, “I was going to see him at the hospital every day before I stopped because of transport cost. I go twice a week now.

The hospital said the next step is to take him to a motherless babies’ home because we don’t have money.

We have tried to raise money to no avail. We were able to raise N550,000 from friends and relatives, including the N170,000 we got on a social media platform. We still need to pay N650,000.”

A doctor at the Inton Hospital, Dr. Badejo Christopher, had said the medical bill was high due to the specialised care required by the baby.

Christopher, who spoke to The Punch in March while the baby was still receiving intensive care, said Ighodalo was being monitored by a consultant paediatrician.

He had said, “The mother went into labour at 27 weeks as against 38/40 weeks. The twins were rushed here, but we could not save one of them. The boy has been inside an incubator and taking drugs.

An average birth weight is 2.5kg, but the baby’s weight at presentation was 1.0kg. The challenges of managing preterm children are many. The drugs we use are very expensive because the children are susceptible to sepsis (infection).

One of the antibiotics is as expensive as N16,000. We charge N150,000 per week.”

The Chief Medical Director of Inton, Mr. Akeem Mustapha, on Tuesday, however, denied that the hospital planned to take the child to an orphanage, saying the couple wanted to draw public sympathy.

He said, “There is nothing like that. We only advised them that it is not right to put the child in the nursery for a long time because if any infection breaks out at the hospital, the child may be affected. Nobody will say because of that, the child should be taken to a motherless babies’ home. Why?

They are only trying to whip up sentiments so that you can help them to get money. They need money to discharge the baby, so they want you to put up a story that the hospital will take the child to a motherless babies’ home. Why they are putting up this kind of thing is laughable.”

  • Only 3 out of 34 state hospitals in Edo functioning – NMA

Dr Emmanuel Osaigbovo, Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Edo, says only three hospitals out of the 34 owned by the State Government are functioning.

Osaigbovo disclosed this on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin.

He named the functional hospitals as the Central Hospital, Stella Obasanjo Hospital and General Hospital, Auchi.

However, he said that in the course of the five days warning strike embarked upon by the association last March, the state government hinted of its intention to ensure the rejuvenation of all its hospital.

The NMA chairman said this was contained in a government blueprint on the health sector in the state, which was made available to the association.

He noted that the blueprint also contained government possible solution to some of the issues raised, which prompted the strike.

He added that the government blueprint outlined plans for new development of primary healthcare centres, with the first 20 to be fixed within three months and an additional 200 to be completed within 24 months.

Osaigbovo also said that the government has given assurance to employ more doctors and allied health workers before the end of the year.

While underscoring the need for government not just build facilities without utilisation due to dearth of manpower, he said that the people of the state deserve the best.

The NMA chairman, who blamed strike actions in the country on the inability of government to do the needful for her citizens, urged government to always show commitment to the welfare of citizens and stop reneging on promises.
He said that this was because the citizens were the most hit by hardship and the effect of any industrial action.

Osaigbovo revealed that it took the intervention of the Benin monarch, the State House of Assembly and well meaning citizens of the state to stop the association from proceeding on an indefinite strike after the five days warning strike in March.

He therefore said that the state government owed an obligation to implement the agreement reached with the association.

Nigerians in US condemn Bello’s hospital shooting

The Nigerian community in the U.S. has condemned the shooting on Friday of seven people at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Centre in New York by Nigeria-born Dr Michael Henry Bello.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Bello, 45, shot dead a woman on the 17th floor of the hospital and injured six others on the 16th floor, before allegedly killing himself, the New York Police Department Commissioner James O’Neil, said.

The Organization for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN), in a statement issued by its President, Solomon Bakare, said the Nigerians in the U.S. are the best of their kind.

The Organization for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN, Inc.) condemns, in strongest terms, the senseless and shocking shooting of seven innocent people by Dr Henry Bello at the Bronx Lebanon Hospital on Friday, June 30, 2017.

On behalf of the Nigerian Community in New York City, we offer our sympathies and condolences to the family of Dr Tracy Sin-Yee Tam, the physician whose life was unjustly taken by this senseless shooting.

Our thoughts and prayers also go to the other victims, most of whom are still undergoing treatment for their injuries, as well as to the entire staff and patients of the Bronx Lebanon Hospital, who have been needlessly traumatized by Dr Bello’s heinous act.

We like to state categorically that Dr Bello’s dastardly act is by no means reflective of the exemplary service and professionalism of thousands of Nigerian physicians and other health care practitioners all over the United States, who have dedicated their lives and careers to saving lives and are highly respected in the medical field.”

Founded over 25 years ago, the OAN is a New York based not-for-profit organization that represents the interests of Nigerians in the Diaspora.

The Nigerian organization has also been at the forefront of encouraging Nigerians to make positive contributions in the U.S.

OAN is also the arrowhead of the Nigerian Independence Day Parade Committee, which is a coalition of Nigerian religious, professional, and socio-cultural organizations that plans the annual Nigerian Independence Day Parade in New York City.

These organizations include Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas, Nigerian Nurses Association, Nigerian Lawyers Association, Nigerian Social Workers Association, and various religious and Nigerian ethnic associations.

OAN also sponsors seminars and symposia on various topical issues, and has received several awards, proclamations, and citations from City, State, and Federal elected officials for its work,” the statement read.

Bello, who hailed from Auchi, Edo State, was going to be fired by the hospital, after reports of sexual harassments, but instead chose to resign in February 2015 in lieu of termination.

He went into the hospital, his former workplace, wearing a white lab coat with an AR-15 machine gun hidden underneath and asked for a specific doctor on the 16th floor.

However, when he was told the doctor was not there, he started shooting at everyone and tried to set himself on fire before allegedly committing suicide.

Of the six people wounded in the shooting, two had been transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital by Sunday as they had injuries to the brain and liver and remained in critical but stable condition.

Four patients – medical residents, a medical student and a patient – remained at Bronx-Lebanon, where they were in stable condition recovering from injuries to the abdomen, neck, thigh and hand, hospital officials said.
