Covid-19: Delta seals three popular hotels for breaching social distancing, face masks order

The Delta State Government has made good its threats to clamp down on businesses in the state flouting its order on guidelines for reopening.

This is especially as the state continues to record high COVID-19 figures and casualties.

It follows that governments especially Covid-19 Taskforce and security agents will have to intensify efforts to enhance enforcement, so as to successfully fight the spread of the virus.

Worried by the increasing numbers and gross breach of guidelines, the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Barrister Chiedu Ebie on Sunday led the state Covid-19 prevention taskforce team on oversight function to some hotels in Asaba.

Sadly, three hotels in the state capital got the sledge hammer of the taskforce as Ebie ordered that the defaulting hotels bars should be sealed for failing to effectively ensure the physical distancing and wearing of face masks by majority of customers at the time the taskforce carried out their unscheduled oversight function.

The hotels affected are; Hampton Towers, Golden Tulips and Vienna International Hotels, all in the state capital, Asaba.

Mr Ebie, decried the rising cases of Covid-19 in the state and warned hotel operators to adhere to the directives of not opening their bars and restaurants to people who were not guests in the hotels. He emphasised that people should buy drinks and food and take them to their rooms.

Addressing those caught flouting the rules, Mr Ebie said, “it is unfortunate that we are having these number of persons drinking in this small place; I know people that have died of Covid-19 and it is unfortunate that each and everyone of you here is educated and is aware about what to do.

“You have come here, you don’t know who is positive and to you, it doesn’t matter, but, to us, it is not a joke, it is our duty to enforce the protocols because, these are unusual times.

“We cannot compromise the lives of our people, the people should buy the drinks and go to their rooms; if one person is discovered to have Covid-19, this hotel will be shut down and you can imagine what it will cost to engage in contact tracing of everyone who is here. Don’t encourage people from outside to come in here and drink.”

“What happened today was essentially to check the level of compliance to the directives that were given as regards actions to check the spread of Covid-19.

“We got information that people were coming from outside the hotels to drink and we are committed to ensuring full compliance for the safety of our people.

“Deltans should help us by staying safe, for those that flouted the directives, we sealed some parts of their hotel.

“Help us contain the virus as any hotel that is flouting this directives will be shut down.”

“And on the rising cases of Covid-19 in the State, it was as a result of aggressive contact tracing. In one instance, there were 9 persons from one compound” Ebie disclosed.

Manager of hotel demolished by Wike among 27 new COVID-19 cases in Rivers

The Rivers State Government on Sunday confirmed recording 27 new positive coronavirus cases in the state.

According to a statement released on Sunday evening by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim, the Manager of Prodest Hotel demolished some two weeks ago by Governor Nyesom Wike was among the new cases.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the embattled manager, identified as Bariledum Azoroh after the demolition was detained, tried and convicted at a magistrate court in Port Harcourt while undergoing a 14-day isolation.

Meanwhile, the owner of the hotel, Gogorobari Needam had since cried out the ‘shredded’ way the trial was conducted. He also accused Gov Wike of hijacking the judicial system in the state.

According to the commissioner, the hotels were demolished because “the owners violated Executive Order 7 which banned the operation of hotels.

The COVID-19 Taskforce members from the Local Government who went to enforce the Executive Order were brutalized and dehumanised leading to the death of one of them.”

SERAP vows to sue Wike over hotels demolition

The Socio-Economic Right and Accountability Project, SERAP, has reacted to the demolition of two hotels by the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, describing the action as executive rascality.

The rights body condemned the demolition of Prodest Hotel by Wike, and vowed to take action.

“We condemn the reported demolition of Prodest Hotel by Gov Wike, Rivers State.

“Using COVID-19 to perpetrate human rights violations is executive rascality & Mr Wike must stop this now.

“We’re taking legal action to hold him & his govt. to account for illegal actions.

“The demolition of Prodest Hotel is forced evictions and in violation of article 11 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and other human rights treaties to which Nigeria is a state party,” SERAP said on its twitter handle.

Wike had on Sunday supervised the demolition of two hotels in Eleme and Onne for violating the Executive Order 6 of the state government, which banned the operations of hotels amid the lockdown in order to check the spread of coronavirus.

“Government has no alternative but to apply the Executive order, which I signed before the lockdown of Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt. I called all the traditional rulers and council chairmen and told them to ensure that no hotel operates in the state,” he said.

Monarch isolates’ from coronavirus with 20 women in hotel

Thailand’s king has taken over a luxury German hotel to isolate from the coronavirus — along with a harem of 20 women, according to reports.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn, 67, reportedly booked the entire Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl with “special permission” to break the lockdown in the Alpine resort town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Independent said, quoting German media.

But rather than isolate, he moved in a harem of 20 concubines along with a team of servants, the UK paper said, citing German tabloid Bild.

The king, widely known as Rama X, planned an even bigger party — but 119 members of his entourage were forced to return to Thailand amid fears they had the potentially deadly bug, the report said.

It was not clear if his fourth wife, former flight attendant Suthida Tidjai, was even with him.

His takeover made local news because hotels in the region have been forced to close to stem the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

But the Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl was given special permission to host the king and his entourage because “the guests are a single, homogenous group of people with no fluctuation,” a spokesperson for the local district council said, according to the report.

The Edo State Government on Wednesday made good its threat when it demolished Latifa Hotel belonging to Mr. Tony Adun, a former aide of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

The government of Godwin Obaseki had threatened to demolish the property for allegedly violating building laws of the state.

It said the structure sits across a road in the Ugbor-Amagba axis of Oredo Local Government Area of the state.

The hotel building was reduced to rubble on Wednesday afternoon, after an injunction secured by Adun against the exercise was vacated by the state government.

The government penciled the structure for demolition, as it was illegal, without an approved building plan for a hotel and sitting across a road.

According to a statement issued and signed by the Special Adviser to Governor Obaseki on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, the deed of transfer being paraded by Adun was also not registered with the state government, according to court papers filed by Solicitor-General of Edo State, Oluwole Iyamu, SAN.

Bulldozers and caterpillars were mobilized to the site for the exercise while security operatives mounted guard to ensure the process was not disrupted by thugs in the area loyal to Adun.

The leader of the security team cordoned off the area and urged residents and shop owners around the area not to panic while the exercise lasted.
