Count me out of Abia Assembly crisis – Member-elect

A member-elect for Obingwa West State Constituency of Abia, Mr Uchenna Erondu (Jnr.), has dissociated himself from the crisis currently rocking the house, leading its factionalisation.

Erondu stated this in a statement issued on Thursday and made available to newsmen in Umuahia.

“It beats my imagination that my name could be associated with such crisis when I have yet to become a member of the house,” he stated.

He pleaded with those spreading “the unfounded and malicious allegations to stop forthwith”, adding that it would not serve them any useful purpose.

Recalled that 16 of the 24-member assembly had on Tuesday, impeached the Speaker, Mr Chinedum Orji, over alleged gross misconduct.

Orji, in turn, organised an emergency plenary session attended by eight members, plus himself, where they announced the suspension of the nine members involved in his purported impeachment.

It was alleged that Erondu, who is  former aide to Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu, had galvanised and finanacially induced the 16 members to effect the change of speakership of the seventh assembly.

However, Erondu said that at no time did he give money to any legislator nor engaged anyone “to obtain the buy-in of members of the assembly” on his behalf.

“I advise the idle minds manufacturing these lies and rumours and seeking to drag my name down to look for a meaningful venture to engage their brains rather than this reckless path of character assassination,” he added.

Drama as Abia Speaker resists impeachment; Deputy suspended

Abia State House of Assembly on Tuesday suspended the Deputy Speaker, Mr Ifeanyi Uchendu, and eight other members, over the reported impeachment of the Speaker, Mr Chinedum Orji.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Orji, who presided over a plenary session of the House, announced the immediate suspension of the lawmakers for one month with no benefits.

Other suspended members included Kennedy Njoku (Osisioma North), Chukwudi Apugo (Umuahia East) and Aaron Uzodike (Aba North).

The rest were Thomas Nkoro (Obingwa West), Okey Igwe (Umunneochi), Chikwendu Kalu (Isiala Ngwa South) Obinna Ichitta (Aba South) and Chijioke Chukwu (Minority Leader – Bende North).

Recall that some members of the House had by 9 am on Tuesday, suspended the Speaker for what they describe as “his insensitivity to the welfare of members and other sundry activities”.

It was gathered that 16 of the 24-member house had allegedly signed for the Speaker’s impeachment that took place at a guest house in Umuahia metropolis.

At the venue, the former Speaker, Kennedy Njoku, had moved the motion for the Speaker’s removal and was seconded by Chijioke Chukwu.

The meeting was presided over by the suspended Deputy Speaker.

In a video that went viral, the members had in a voice vote unanimously endorsed the Speaker’s impeachment over so many allegations levelled against him.

They had also elected Apugo as the new Speaker.

But, hours after the purported impeachment, Orji convened an emergency plenary session at the assembly complex, where nine members, including himself, resolved to suspend the other nine members.

The motion for their suspension was moved by Jerry Uzosike (Umuahia South), seconded by Solomon Apulonu (Majority Leader – Obingwa East).

TNG reports only members who physically participated in the impeachment of the Speaker were suspended.

Those whose signatures were allegedly obtained were exonerated, pending further investigations.

Subsequently, the house replaced the suspended Deputy Speaker with Mandela Obasi, who was immediately sworn in as the new Deputy Speaker.

Orji also informed the Commissioner of Police and Director of State Services that only certified members would be allowed access to the hallowed chamber.

The House, thereafter, set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the alleged misconduct of the suspended members and submit its report in one week.

Addressing newsmen shortly after the plenary session, Orji said that he had faced several humiliations as a speaker.

He said: “They should give the evidence of my financial recklessness.

“They want me to always be at loggerheads with the Governor of the state and I told them that I don’t need to always do that over their own welfare.

“If I decided that I’m no more interested in doing that fight, that it should be a collective effort, I don’t think I’m wrong in doing that.”

29-year-old APC candidate wins Imo House of representatives election

A 29-year-old Akarachi Amadi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has won the Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Federal Constituency supplementary election held on Saturday in Imo.

The Retuning Officer, Prof Boniface Okoro, while declaring the result of the election on Monday, said Amadi polled 21, 372 votes to emerge winner ahead of other candidates.

Okoro said the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Mr Uche Ogbuagu, had 18, 296 votes, while the incumbent and candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Mr Henry Nwawuba, garnered 7, 202 votes.

According to him, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mr Usmond Ukanacho, polled 6,681 votes, while Mr Chinonso Uba of the African Democratic Congress (ASC) had 4,100 votes.

Okoro added that, Mr Godstime Chukwunuikem of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) got 246 votes.

In his reaction, Amadi commended the voters and party faithful for the confidence reposed in him.

He assured the constituents that he would not disappoint the mandate given to him to represent them.

However, the candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Uche Ogbuagu, described the supplementary poll as an “anomaly and total neglect of the electoral guidelines as stipulated by the law”.

“I will explore all avenues and options provided by the constitution to recover the Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Federal Constituency mandate,” Ogbuagu noted.

He also praised the determination of his supporters before and during the election.

  • Assembly faults Lagos govt over appointment without legislative confirmation

Assembly faults Lagos govt over appointment without legislative confirmation

The Lagos State House of Assembly has faulted the state government for appointing some categories of workers without recourse to the lawmakers for their screening and confirmation.

The House made this known sequel to a ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance’ brought before the House by the Deputy Majority Leader, Mr Noheem Adams (Eti-Osa I) during plenary.

Raising the motion earlier, Adams cited Section 196, Subsection 2; Section 198 and Section 126, Subsection 3 which gave backing to the House of Assembly in respect of nominations by the governor for appointments.

“Section 126, Subsection 3 provides that except with the resolution of a state Assembly, no person shall act in the office of the Auditor-General for a state for a period exceeding six months.

“As the Chairman, House Committee on Legislative Compliance, I have observed that some appointments to boards and other agencies were not brought to this noble House. If this persists, the principle of separation of powers will be in jeopardy.

“For example, the Auditor-General was appointed on the Sept. 22, 2022 and today is April 11, 2023, so his appointment in acting capacity had exceeded what the laws stipulate,” he said.

Supporting Adams, Mr Ademola Kasunmu (Ikeja I) said the stipulations of Section 198 should be strictly adhered to by the state government.

Kasunmu said because such appointments were considered null and void, every remuneration that had been paid to them should be returned to the coffers of the state.

Speaking on the same matter, Mr Victor Akande (Ojo I) observed that the situation happened in the judiciary where an appointment was done without recourse to the House.

Also, Mr Lukmon Olumoh  (Ajeromi-Ifelodun I) lamented that such appointments without regard for the House were becoming too many.

“Separation of power is a doctrine enshrined in the constitution. The executive has the right to nominate people and the House has the responsibility to either confirm or reject such nominations.

“It is not only in the office of the Auditor-General but I don’t know in what capacity one can act beyond the time limit without recourse to the House,” he said.

Olumoh urged the House to look at the issue holistically to put an end to what could cause issues later.

On his part, Mr Rotimi Olowo (Shomolu I) said there were several government officials parading themselves with many names without appearing before the House for clearance.

He said: “It should not be a ‘paddy-paddy’ thing. This is a constitutional matter and if we do not adhere, we would end up facing the wrath of the people.

“This is an infraction to have people who are not cleared by the House receiving salaries and I am of the opinion that such money should be returned to the state’s coffers.”

Commenting, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa (Agege I), who presided over the sitting, agreed with others lawmakers that appointments of such nature without recourse to the House amounted to infractions.

“I quite agree with all of you that the failure of such nominees to appear is an infraction or violation of the laws of this House, especially as it relates to the MDAs.

“The laws of the House of Assembly have statutory provisions that nominees of the governor must appear for confirmation.

“It is becoming common and regular and if we failed to act now, it becomes a norm. I share your sentiments that there is need for us to put a stop to this.

“I am aware of the development in the Audit Commission, I am aware of the one in the Law Reform Commission and now the Auditor-General and some others,” he said.

The House consequently ordered the withdrawal of letters given to government appointees whose nominations should have been sent to the House for screening and confirmation, but who took up the jobs without the due process.

The House also ordered the immediate return of salaries and remunerations enjoyed by the affected

officials pending their appearance before the House.

BREAKING: Security operatives seal Plateau House of Assembly complex

Security operatives have sealed off the entrance of the Plateau House of Assembly as the tussle for the assembly speakership deepens.

According to reports, no fewer than 15 security vehicles were seen stationed in strategic locations around the complex.

It was observed that stern-looking Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and other security personnel manned the gates and surroundings.

The road linking the Terminus Market from the Plateau Specialist Hospital through the assembly complex was blocked from traffic.

The Plateau Police Spokesperson, DSP Alfred Alabo, said that the move was to forestall any breakdown of law of order around the assembly.

”We learnt that supporters of some politicians will be coming around the assembly to protest.

“If the politicians’ supporters come around, it is going to affect traffic and it may lead to breakdown of law and order.

“In order to save lives and property, we took this action so that we can control security arrangements within the Plateau house of assembly area.

“If nothing happens, the security will be relaxed and everything will return to normal,” he explained

Abok Ayuba who was impeached on Oct. 28, 2021 was reinstated by the Plateau High Court on Monday.

He resumed duties on Tuesday and presided over plenary.

But Ayuba’s successor, Yakubu Sanda and 12 others filed an appeal and stay of execution on Tuesday.

Both Sanda and Ayuba are laying claim to speakership of the assembly.

While Ayuba is relying on his reinstatement, Sanda is holding unto the stay of execution.

Court orders return of impeached Plateau speaker with immediate effect

A High Court in Plateau has ordered that Abok Ayuba be reinstated as speaker of the state House of Assembly with immediate effect.

The presiding judge, Nafisa Musa, in her ruling on Monday, described Ayuba’s impeachment as illegal and held it null and void.

The court also awarded N1.5 million as the cost of litigation and N138,000 as the cost of filing the suit.

Ayuba had approached the court to file a suit to challenge his impeachment.

He asked the court to declare that his removal “as speaker of the Plateau state house of assembly by the votes of less than two-third majority of the 24 members which is, 16 members of the Plateau state house of assembly, was in violation of Section 92(2)(c) of the Constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, Order 7 rule 14 of the Plateau State House of Assembly Standing Orders 2021 as amended.”

Ayuba’s impeachment was led by eight lawmakers from the All Progressives and presided by the deputy speaker Saleh Yipmong on October 28, 2021, while members of the Peoples Democratic Party were prevented from gaining access to the assembly complex.

Court orders return of impeached Plateau speaker with immediate effect

A member representing Pengana constituency under the APC, Yakubu Sanda, was announced the new speaker.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Ayuba was elected speaker of the 9th Plateau State House of Assembly in 2019.

Ayuba was a first-time member of the Assembly elected from Jos East Constituency on the platform of All Progressives Congress in 2019. He was a 500 level law student at the University of Jos when he was elected. He was controversially impeached by members of the house of Assembly on the 28th October, 2021.

His election as the speaker of the house at the age of 33 was hailed nationwide as the representative of the youth.

Ayuba was nominated for the speakership election by Ibrahim Baba Hassan (a former Deputy Speaker of the House) from Jos North and was seconded by a first-time member of the house, Esther Dusu representing Jos Norh-West.

A ranking member of the assembly who had been in the house since 1999 was widely rumoured to emerge speaker but members of the house unanimously elected Ayuba waving all speakership electoral requirements to allow his emergence.

  • Fight-to-finish in guber, house assembly races – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Fight-to-finish in guber, house assembly races – By Ehichioya Ezomon

As you read this piece, winners and losers would’ve emerged or are discernible among contestants for the March 18 governorship and state assembly poll across Nigeria.

While governorship seats were up in 28 of the 36 states, the poll was for all 36 Houses of Assembly.

Saturday’s franchise was a rehash of the contentious February 25 presidential and federal legislative balloting that produced a near-balance of power among three leading political parties.

But this time, the poll was more explosive, climaxing the 2023 cycle, as the big four platforms tested their ultimate strengths.

In February, the All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party won 12 states each, Labour Party 11 states, and New Nigeria Peoples Party secured one state.

In Saturday’s election, the big prizes were states with huge voting publics that produced profound outcomes on February 25, to shred formbooks.

Most pollsters had predicted a landslide for former Anambra Governor Peter Obi of Labour, while few pundits gave the day to former Lagos Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of PDP.

In the end, Tinubu won in 12 states, including three states from PDP; lost 12 states controlled by the APC to PDP, LP and NNPP; secured the mandatory 25% in 30 states; and garnered the highest number of overall votes of 8,794,726.

Atiku won in 12 states, including five states from APC; lost six PDP states to APC and LP; secured 25% in 19 states; and got second highest votes of 6,984,520.

Obi came into the race with no states under the LP. But on Election Day, he snatched 11 states: six from the APC, four from PDP, and one from All Progressives Grand Alliance. Obi also secured 25% in 16 states, and scored 6,101,533 votes.

The fourth leading candidate and former Kano Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, won his home turf; secured 25% in one state; and earned 1,496,688 votes.

This was the standing, as poll opened on March 18, with the top parties looking to the presidential candidates to help consolidate their gains of February 25.

But only Obi showed a semblance to continue where he stopped in the prior election, by visiting some states amidst a hero’s welcome by his “OBIdients” supporters.

The visits weren’t campaigns per se, but they gave Obi a chance to renew his supporters’ spirits for the battle to reassert Labour’s formidability as a “structureless” party that’s redefined the political landscape.

Obi aptly described his tours as a “stop by” to say, “a big thank you” to his supporters, even as he sought their “support for Labour’s candidates” in Saturday’s poll.

Obi’s visits to Edo and Delta were non-rancorous, but his Anambra trip stirred controversy between him and Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

In the lead-up to February 25, Prof. Soludo – Obi’s long-time political opponent – proclaimed his ambition won’t fly, and should drop out of the race.

But Obi didn’t just win entire South-East, and six other states, he also secured the highest votes of 95% in Anambra.

Obi claims to have no issues with Soludo and yet, asked his supporters to vote all Labour’s candidates, and urged them to “give in their best if elected.”

It’s a coded recipe for legislative “anarchy” should Labour produce majority in the Anambra House of Assembly that impeached Obi on November 2, 2006 – barely eight months in office as Governor.

Soludo didn’t take lightly Obi’s “instruction” to his supporters, and that raised the political ante a notch higher prior to March 18.

Meanwhile, the imprimatur of President-elect Tinubu and Atiku was hardly noticeable in the campaigns for Saturday’s poll.

Tinubu’s engagements included his home-coming to Lagos, to present his “Certificate of Return” to Oba Rilwan Akinolu of Lagos, as Tinubu had promised the Monarch before February 25.

On the occasion that drew huge crowds at the airport to receive him, and at the Palace of the Oba, Tinubu likened the Certificate of Return to the “World Cup” trophy.

In Abuja, there’s a parley of Senators-elect and House of Reps Members-elect with the hierarchy of the APC, which’s poised to have majority in both Chambers in the 10th National Assembly.

The meeting was a groundwork for zoning of Presiding and Principal Officers’ positions that members have shifted to after the March 18 poll.

But not before Tinubu informed the conclave that he had “no preferred candidate” among those posturing for positions in early June, post-Proclamation of the NASS by the new President to be sworn-in on May 29.

Atiku’s main activity was joining a mass walk by PDP leaders and supporters to the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja, to register the party’s rejection of the poll process and declaration of Tinubu as winner of the February election.

PDP’s National Chairman Iyorcha Ayu, who presented a petition to INEC, called for cancellation of the election, and conduct of a fresh exercise “that will be credible and acceptable to Nigerians and the international community.”

Atiku also made a “national broadcast” to PDP supporters not to be deterred by alleged INEC’s inefficiency and manipulation of the February 25 election.

Pre-March 18, there’re alignments and realignments of forces, to correct alleged mistakes that gave wide berths to upstage mostly in the South-East, South-South, North-East and North-West.

In the North, there’re reports of defections across parties, and in the South, social and political groups were upfront endorsing mainly governorship candidates.

The adoptions were daily in Lagos that’s the central attraction, and an explosive battleground between APC and Labour – on the back of reported supremacy contest over who owns Lagos: Yoruba or Igbo.

The Igbo have allegedly moved from calling Lagos a “No man’s land” to claiming, “We own Lagos.”

The governorship was fought along that line, with majority Yoruba backing APC’s Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu, and Igbo and OBIdients that powered Obi’s victory on February 25 supporting

Labour’s Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour – a Yoruba with Igbo mother and wife, who accusingly speaks Igbo fluently than Yoruba.

From his social media posts expressing sympathy for Biafra and outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to active participation in the October 2020 #EndSARS protests that wreaked havoc on Lagos in the wake of alleged “massacre” at the Lekki Toll Gate on Lagos-Epe highway.

And from reported pledge to create Biafra and #EndSARS Days, to depose Yoruba Obas and install Igbo Obis, to boasts of ending “Tinubu and APC’s hegemony in Lagos.”

Many Yoruba – “original indigenes” or not of Lagos – see Rhodes-Vivour’s election as a forerunner to an alleged Igbo plot to “conquer Lagos, and entire South-West” – and the Yoruba have sounded the alarm accordingly.

Such misgivings underpinned the March 18 election, which would prove or belie the hyped hullabaloo when the last ballot is called!

LASG House of Assembly: YP candidate, Tari Taylaur reveals 3 key areas of her legislative agenda for Eti-Osa 1

Mrs. Tari Taylaur is a media professional and TV producer with fourteen years of experience in the private sector, social development and government. She is vying for the seat of Lagos State (LASG) House of Assembly, representing Eti-Osa 1 constituency, at the March 2023 elections.

In this exclusive interview with TheNewsGuru.com (TNG), she spoke about unique qualities that makes her the best candidate to represent Eti-Osa 1 constituency at the Lagos State House of Assembly, INEC’s preparation for March 18 elections, how she intends to transform the environment of Eti-Osa 1 constituency and sundry matters.

    Excerpt:

From your education background, you are a media guru and have worked in both the public and private sectors. So, what do you intend bringing on board for the people of Eti Osa 1 constituency, that makes you think you are the best candidate to represent them at the Lagos State House of Assembly?

I want to give the people of Eti-Osa 1 quality representation that listens, cares, and works to fulfill their aspirations. I will be accountable to them and they will have direct access to me through my local constituency office, plus monthly physical and virtual forums.

With what played out in the last elections (Feb 25, 2023), like attacks on voters, thugs ceasing polling units and others- how confident are you that coming elections would be free and fair?

We always have to keep believing that the processes to bring about fair and credible elections that have been put forward by the 2022 Electoral Act will be followed. Yes, there were massive irregularities in the Feb 25th election, nevertheless we must go out again in faith that our voices have been heard, and our votes will count.

I call on all law enforcement agencies to be vigilant and dutiful in protecting our people. I am personally praying that God touches the hearts of all INEC officials, from top to bottom, to do the right thing

You are contesting under the platform of the Youth Party, YP, what really informed your decision to run under the party- which many said its unpopular in Lagos State?

It’s a growing party that has a strong grassroot base in Eti-Osa. Nothing of value gains popularity overnight! It is better to build a solid foundation so that when an opportunity comes, we are poised to deliver. This is what we have been doing in Youth Party; we will keep on building and gaining ground.

In 2019, the Lagos Assembly set up a committee to tackle environmental issue in Eti-Osa 1 constituency. However, you played a key role as Secretary of the LERA Environment Committee, Vice Chairman – Environment for Zone IV, and Executive Secretary of a subzone. Just a hint, what initiatives would you introduce to achieve a clean environment should the people of Eti Osa 1 constituency give you their votes?

Transforming the environment is a low-hanging fruit that will bring about a tangible improvement in the quality of life in Eti-Osa 1. I know the challenges, and I’m already working out solutions for a cleansed environment in Lekki, which we want to amplify all across Eti-Osa 1. This is something that I can show real-time results for after 6months of representing my constituency. There will be a clear shift in public orientation, which will directly impact the level of cleanliness. I have the network of collaborators, know-how, and strong desire to accomplish this.

What laws or policies would you introduce that will serve the aspirations of the people for better public services?

There are 3 key areas which will guide my legislative agenda for Eti-Osa 1: Cleansed Environment, Innovative Housing for Low-income Communities, and Youth Employment.

You once talked about cleaning Lagos and how you intend to prioritize the need for the network of drainages in the city to be cleaned regularly. Please, kindly shed more light on this.

I’m a strong advocate for clean gutters. Why have we allowed the gutters in front of our homes and offices to become refuse dumps? LAWMA sweeps the highways, but doesn’t touch the gutters, thereby our gutters have become public dustbins…terrible!

State sanitation laws mandate every property occupier to be responsible for the cleanliness of the immediate area around their premises, including the gutters. With proper public orientation and enforcement, as well as regular interventions in notoriously filthy areas, we can uphold the spirit of our laws and achieve a cleansed, wholesome Lagos that’s enjoyable to live in.

Let’s talk about INEC’s preparation for coming elections on Saturday, the BVAs and uploading of results to the IReV Portal, what are your fears?

Like every other decent Nigerian, I fear the needless loss of lives and personal injuries brought about by those who seek to impose their will on voters through violence and intimidation.

I call on all law enforcement agencies to be vigilant and dutiful in protecting our people. I am personally praying that God touches the hearts of all INEC officials, from top to bottom, to do the right thing!

Ahead of coming Saturday’s elections, what is your advice to your supporters and the electorates in general?

Please come out and vote. Stand firm for the new Nigeria we all want. We shall be victorious!

BVAS reconfiguration completed for Ondo Assembly election, says INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has completed the reconfiguration of the Bimodal Voter Registration Systems (BVAS) for the House of Assembly elections in Ondo.

Mr Oyekola Oyelami, Acting Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ondo made this known while addressing newsmen at the premises of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) where the distribution of sensitive materials took place.

Only the house of assembly election would be held on Saturday in Ondo.

Ondo does not have a governorship election in 2023, because it held its Governorship election in 2020.

Oyelami said sensitive materials have been distrubted to all the 18 Local Government Areas of Ondo.

He said the materials distributed are ballot papers and result sheets for the election, saying all the registered political parties would be participating in the election.

”The BVAS reconfiguration is to ensure that the election is free, fair, credible and transparent.

“There is going to be early deployment of materials in all our polling units as well as INEC officials in Ondo.

“We are working hard to ensure that the achievement recorded during the Feb. 25 election will be surpassed as far as this election is concerned,” he said.

The acting REC, who called on voters to cooperate with the officials of INEC.

He said adequate arrangements had been put in place in all the polling units, collation centres, as well as returning centres, either in the riverine or upland area of the state.

Also speaking, Mr Adesanya Olaoluwa, state Chairman of Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) commended INEC for the early distribution of sensitive materials in the state.

Olaoluwa, who is also the state chairman of Action Peoples Party (APP), said that IPAC was happy with the commission over the presidential and national assembly election.

He said he was confident that INEC would conduct a free and fair election.
