    Just In: Police counter kidnap attempt on Plateau Assembly Speaker

    Operatives of the Plateau State Police Command, have countered an attempted kidnap of Hon. Yakubu Sanda, Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly,

    The Command, in a statement issued Saturday, by its Spokesperson, DSP Alfred Alabo, said three unidentified gunmen operating in a grey-coloured CR-V Jeep, arrived at the Speaker’s residence at the Federal Low-cost Housing in Jos South LGA of the State on Thursday.

    He explained that after trailing the Speaker to his residence, the hoodlums attempted to enter his house to kidnap him, but their mission was made impossible by the intrepid Police officers on guard duty, and the timely response of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Ayuba and his men, who joined forces with the men on guard duty to repel the assailants.

    Alabo added that the Command was making a concerted effort to track down the fleeing suspects and get them arrested.

    He thanked members of the public for showing concern about the happenings in their various communities and volunteering to give timely information to the Police for prompt action.

    DSP Alabo urged residents of the State to “Go about their lawful businesses as the Police were already doing a lot to ensure the safety of all and will continue to frustrate the evil and dastardly act of men of the underworld through the effective and proactive crime prevention strategies put in place by the chief crime buster of the State, CP Bartholomew Onyeka.”

    Ekiti House of Assembly reinstates 3 suspended lawmakers

    Ekiti State House of Assembly has reinstated three lawmakers suspended from activities of the House following their roles in the stalling of the passage of the 2022 revised appropriation budget.

    The lawmakers are Mrs. Yemisi Ayokunle, Mr. Ajibade Raphael, and Mr. Tope Ogunleye.

    Their reinstatement followed the adoption of a motion moved by Leader of the House, Mr. Bode Adeoye at plenary on Tuesday.

    The motion, seconded by Mr. Biodun Fawekun was unanimously adopted by members.

    The Speaker of the House, Mrs. Olubunmi Adelugba had earlier read the letters of apology written by the three lawmakers at the plenary.

    The lawmakers apologized for not following the directive of the party, the All Progressive Congress on the choice of Speaker to replace the late Funminyi Afuye who died on Oct. 19 after a brief illness.

    One of the suspended lawmaker, Mrs. Kemi Balogun (Ado Constituency II) had earlier apologized and was reinstated on Monday.

    With the lifting of the suspension, four of the suspended seven lawmakers have been reinstated.

    The house adjourned sitting thereafter to allow the various Committees of the House to scrutinise the 2023 Appropriation for eventual passage.

    Nasarawa State Assembly directs Executive to remit 10% of IGR to LG accounts monthly

    Nasarawa State House of Assembly has directed the Executive arm of government to allocate 10 per cent of Internally Generated Revenue to the Local Government Joint Accounts monthly as required by law.

    This, it said, is for speedy development at the grassroots.

    Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, Speaker of the House gave the directive when the House deliberated on the report of its Ad-hoc Committee that investigated the finances of local governments.

    The committee also investigated factors responsible for lack of development at the grassroots.

    “Recommendations of the committee are as follow: that in compliance with the State-Local Government Joint Accounts Law, 10 per cent of Internally Generated Revenue is to be remitted on monthly basis to the joint account.

    “All Ecological Funds be paid directly to each local government’s Ecological Account.

    “The Ecological Account must be opened in the same bank where the local government’s bank account is domiciled to ensure transparency and accountability.

    “That the Executive arm of government should ensure that local governments fulfilled all criteria to benefit from the State Fiscal Transparency Accountability and Sustainability policy,’’ he said.

    The speaker directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the resolution to the governor for necessary action.

    On Sept. 26, a member drew the attention of the House to the dwindling fortunes of local governments as a result of poor or inadequate funding.

    Kwara Assembly confirms 2 commissioner nominees

    The Kwara House of Assembly on Wednesday confirmed two outstanding commissioner nominees forwarded to it by Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

    The nominees are Hajia Sa’adatu Maddibbo-Kawu from Ilorin South Local Government Area and Abubakar Sadiq Buhari from Edu Local Government Area of the state.

    The commissioner designates were confirmed after the consideration of their nomination at the Committee of Whole House, following a thorough screening by the lawmakers.

    Responding to questions, Hajia Maddibbo-Kawu promised to rekindle her efforts to further improve on her capacity in line with policy thrust of the present administration in the state.

    On his part, Buhari described his nomination by AbdulRazaq as a clarion call to serve the people of the state.

    He advocated aggressive effort to strengthen electronic learning in the state to compete favourably with advanced nations.

    The Speaker, Mr Yakubu Salihu, while confirming the nominees, urged the commissioner designates to justify the confidence reposed in them

    He therefore directed the Clerk of the House, Hajia Halimah Kperogi, to communicate the notice of the confirmation to the governor.

    Hajia Maddibbo-Kawu broke the record of appearing before the House third time for screening and confirmation as commissioner, while Buhari would be the youngest commissioner in Nigeria, if inaugurated.

    Ekiti Assembly Speaker, Afuye cause of death officially revealed

    The cause of death of the late Speaker of Ekiti House of Assembly, Mr. Funminiyi Afuye has been officially revealed.

    This is contained in a statement by Mr Yinka Oyebode, the Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Biodun Oyebanji in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday.

    According to Oyebode, Afuye died on Wednesday evening at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti, where he was receiving treatment after suffering a Cardiac arrest.

    The late Speaker, 66, was a former Commissioner, Ekiti State Ministry of Information and two-time member of the State Assembly.

    “He was inaugurated Speaker of the sixth Assembly on June 6, 2019,” Oyebode said.

    Meanwhile, the State House of Assembly, in a statement by Mrs Yemisi Ayokunle, the Chairman, House Committee on Media and Publicity, said that the late speaker died during a brief illness.

    Ayokunle said that the assembly has declared a seven-day mourning period in his honor.

    She said that it was also directed that flag in the Assembly complex should be flown at half mast.

    Ayokunle described late Afuye as “an embodiment of courage, excellence and a highly committed man to public service” adding that he would be greatly missed.

    The Speaker of the Ekiti House of Assembly, Funminiyi Afuye is dead.

    Afuye, who represents Ikere constituency 1, died on Wednesday evening at 66 after a brief illness.

    Afuye appeared at the inauguration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji, on Sunday and was said to have also attended plenary on Tuesday before the sudden turn of events on Wednesday.

    The late Assembly Speaker served as Commissioner for Information during the first term of former Governor Kayode Fayemi between 2010 and 2014.

    Kano Assembly gives approval for the renaming of state Varsity after Aliko Dangote

    The Kano State House of Assembly has given their nod for the renaming of the Kano University of Science and Technology, ( KUST)Wudil, after billionaire business mogul Aliko Dangote.

    This was a follow-up to the letter already transmitted to the State Assembly by the executive in May 2022, seeking for the approval of the House to change the name of the institution to Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil.

    The House deliberated and adopted the renaming of the institution during a plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Hamisu Chidari.

    Majority leader of the House, Labaran Madari, who spoke to newsmen after plenary, explained that the lawmakers supported the initiative by the state government due to the immense contribution of Alhaji Aliko Dangote to the development of education in the state.

    The Kano state Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba had in May 2022, issued a statement on the approval of renaming the university by the state government, after a recommendation, by the university’s visitation panel.

    Garba noted that the approval of the university has been transmitted to the State Assembly for proper legislative action.

     Kano University of Science and Technology Wudil was established as Kano University of Technology in 2001, but in 2005 the institution was renamed Kano University of Science and Technology Wudil, in conformity with the gazette laws of the university.

    Aliko Dangote was appointed as Chancellor of KUST now Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, in 2008 by the former governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekaru, and reappointed by the incumbent governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, in November 2021.

    Dangote Group dismisses link with Kogi assembly fire outbreak

    Dangote Group has disassociated itself from the fire outbreak at the Kogi State House of Assembly in the early hours of Monday.

    The company refuted claims that it was responsible for the development in a statement signed by Mr. Anthony Chiejina, Group Head Branding and Communications, Dangote Industries Ltd., on Monday in Lagos.

    Chiejina said the company, as a socially responsible corporate entity, totally refuted this allegation and condemned “the unprofessional and irresponsible attempt to smear its image before local and international investors and thus erode its brand value.”

    He said the the company would never stoop so low as to sponsor thugs to destroy any property, belonging to either government or any individual.

    According to him, such action runs contrary to the group’s business ethos and everything the company stands for as a leading manufacturer with teeming customers and consumers across Nigeria and Africa.

    He said lawyers representing Dangote Group had been mandated to react appropriately to the damaging allegation from the Kogi State government within the full extent of the law.

    “Our attention has been drawn to a circulating press statement issued by the Kogi State government, wherein the Dangote Group was accused of allegedly sponsoring arsonists to set the Kogi State House of Assembly on fire in the early hours of Monday, Oct. 10.

    “The statement titled, ‘Obajana: Desperation sets in as imported hoodlums burn down Kogi Assembly,’ which was signed by the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, pointedly accused our company of burning the Complex.

    “…. in an attempt to possibly destroy evidence relating to the ownership tussle between the Kogi State Government and the Dangote Group over the Obajana Cement Company.

    “We urge our stakeholders and the public to disregard such irresponsible and insane statements.

    “We ask all our stakeholders, namely shareholders, customers, suppliers, employees, and the entire community of Obajana and Kogi State at large to remain calm while we follow the legitimate and lawful process to resolve this matter with the State Government,” he said.

    Burnt House of Assembly: Kogi state government calls for calm

    The Kogi Government has appealed to residents to remain calm over the state House of Assembly that got burnt in the early hours of Monday.

    The Commissioner for Information, Mr Kingsley Fanwo, made the call in a statement in Lokoja.

    Fanwo said that security and technical experts were already working hard to unravel the cause(s) of the inferno, which he claimed had caused significant damage to the complex.

    “We urge the general public to be calm, law-abiding and resist the temptation of being lawless as the government is capable of dealing with the likely outcome of the investigations.

    “The state government will also make provision for temporary arrangements to ensure the legislative business is not completely halted as a result of the unfortunate incident, ” he assured.

    The commissioner, who described the incident as ”very sad” said that the state government would inform the general public of the findings as they unfolded.

    Newsmen reports that the assembly complex was gutted by fire in the early hours of Monday, Oct. 10.

    The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained by security operatives.

    Just In: Fire razes Kogi House of Assembly [Photos/Video]

    An early morning fire has razed the Kogi State House of Assembly located at Crusher Area, Lokoja.

    It was gathered that the fire started middle of the night but the security agents were able to know at about 7 am on Tuesday morning.

    The chamber was razed down completely including the chairs, tables, and roof of the building.

    The Speaker of the House, Prince Mathew Kolawole and the State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara were among the early caller at the assembly complex.

    Kolawole, while speaking with newsmen said that he suspects sabotage but fell short of where the suspected sabotage might be from.

    Asked whether it might have been linked with the recent happening between the Assembly and Dangote group said that that is left to the security to determine.

    “We should leave security people to do their work and give us a report going forward,” the speaker said.
    However, a source who does not want his name in print said he suspected an explosion but couldn’t say who might be responsible.
