Minority Leadership Crisis: Despite court order preserving status quo, leadership allegedly gives a nod to Committee to breach Order

…as leadership is set to suspend Chinda, others

The minority leadership crisis rocking the House of Representatives continues as some members of leadership pressurises committee chairman to lay report.

This is despite a court order maintaining the status quo before the proceedings of the House on Wednesday 16th Nov 2019 and restraining the House from taking any further step, the Committee is likely to conclude and lay its report.

Report has it that the said report is being written by an Edo born All Progressives Congress (APC) lawyer and Ex Member of the National Assembly (NASS).

Recall that, the media was agog within the week that the House leadership had concluded plans to suspend Kingsley Chinda, Chukwuma Onyema, Ajibola Muraino and Yakubu Barde over alleged impersonation of Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) leadership in the House.

It was reliably gathered on Friday that some members of House leadership have repeatedly mounted pressures on the House Committee Chairman on Ethics and Privileges to receive the report already written by a consultant and lay same despite a court order preserving the status quo which restrains the House from taking any further step.

A source privy to this development, a member of the Committee and new member of the House expressed surprise that there is so much deceit and selfishness amongst members.

He revealed that the pressure from some members of House leadership was so strong that the chairman had to cave in.

According to him, these members are harmless and have not done anything that affects the entire House, it’s their PDP matter and besides, if their party has suspended their leaders in the House and appointed interim leadership pending when they sort their issues, why is the House so vexed.

“We don’t have to fight the cause of a group of members against another group.

“If this pressure continues and the report is layed and the four lawmakers suspended then it’s goodbye to democracy in Nigeria.

“As a new member, I fully supported the Speaker and still support him fanatically but suspending these Members from Parliament for this reason is bye bye to democracy,” he said.

He further stated, “it will be a sad commentary in all spheres as the coffin of Representative democracy and voice of opposition must have been sent to the morgue and this is not good for a vibrant House”.

Another source added that since the chairman and members of the Ethics and Privileges were personally sued as 4th to 20th Defendants respectively in the suit and a positive order of Court was made that they maintain the status quo as at 6th Nov 2019, and having been duly served with the order;attending clandestine meetings without reflecting same on the order paper, illegally signing the report (or the chairman using signatures for past attendances of meetings not meant for the report) and eventually laying the purported report will just expose them to contempt of court and possible future imprisonment.

Sensing the danger ahead, Chinda had earlier issued a statement stating the obvious last week.

In the statement, the Obio/Akpor Rep of Rivers State said “I am shocked to hear that this issue is resonating.

“I don’t think the Speaker will concede to suspending us from the House for… speaking on behalf of the PDP Caucus of the House.

“Anyway from hindsight and the level of horse-trading in politics and the House in particular, I advise my other three colleagues to brace up for the worst.

“If we are suspended via a majority vote in the House, then I pity the Parliament and Parliamentarians, because it means no member will have an independent opinion anymore. A bad precedent would have been set.

“Yes, I hear some people say when it’s done, we can go to court and they will frustrate the litigation for the next 3 years and we will remain outside the Parliament but I am not worried about all that”.

A few members of the Committee confirmed that they have received a copy of the process and the Clerk of NASS has been served with the process.

At the Federal High Court, the trial was adjourned to Friday 21st Feb 2020.

  • Impeachment: Trump admits withholding documents from House during trial

President Trump suggested Wednesday that he is comfortable with the impeachment trial charade going on in the US Senate as he admitted in his own words in Davos, Switzerland that the White House is withholding evidence about his dealings with Ukraine.

“Honestly, we have all the material. They don’t have the material,” the president told reporters in Davos, Switzerland, where he is attending the World Economic Forum, regarding the documents the White House has refused to turn over and which the Mitch McConnell led majority has blocked from being requessted for.

“When we released that conversation, all hell broke out with the Democrats because they say, wait a minute, this is much different than shifty Schiff told us, so we’re doing very well. I got to watch enough, I thought our team did a very good job,” Trump said, referencing House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA), who has spearheaded the House impeachment inquiry against the president.

Rep. Val Demings (D-FL), one of the seven congressional impeachment managers, blasted Trump’s admission on Twitter, writing, “The second article of impeachment was for obstruction of Congress: covering up witnesses and documents from the American people. This morning the President not only confessed to it, he bragged about it.”

Edo Assembly Crisis: Reps adopt report on take over of House by National Assembly

    From Jonas Ike, Abuja.

The House of Representatives on Wednesday adopted a report of its Ad-hoc Committee on Edo State House of Assembly Crisis which recommended a full take over of the Edo State legislature if the crisis fails to normalize in line with the provisions of Section 11 (4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The House Ad-hoc Committee in a 5 point recommendation had recommended among others: (a) That Edo State Governor Mr.Godwin Obaseki in the interest of peaceful co-existence of the state should issue a fresh proclamation within one (1) week in line with Section 105 (3) of the 1999 Constitution as (amended) stating the date and venue and publish in any National Daily and Television Station.
    (b) That all actions taken by the members should be declared null and void pending the proper inauguration.
    (c) That all members of the Edo State House of Assembly both those who have been inaugurated should dissolve their factions in the interest of peace and stability of the House with the view to moving the state forward.
    (d) That the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and Director-General of the Department of State Service DG DSS should shut down the Edo State House of Assembly and provide adequate security to allay further fears of intimidation and threat as alleged by members-elect.
    (e) That where all the recommendations (a–e) above fail, the National Assembly should invoke the provisions of Section 11 (4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to take over the State House of Assembly until the situation normalizes.
After a clause by clause consideration of all these recommendations by the Ad-hoc Committee, the House at the Committee of the Whole adopted the report.
Deputy Speaker of the House Hon.Idris Wase had rejected the intervention of some lawmakers notably Hon Uzoma Abonta (Abia,PDP) who had argued that it is the Clerk and not the Gorvernor that should reconvene the House.
The presiding officer noted that constitutionally, it is the Governor that has powers to issue proclamation for the inuaguration of the House and not the Clerk.

  • Magu denies owning two houses in Abuja, demands apology from Sun Newspaper

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu on Thursday told an Ikeja high court that he does not own two houses.

Magu told the court that he has only one house which he said is situated in Karo, Abuja.

He stated this while being led in evidence by his counsel, Wahab Shittu before Justice Doris Okuwobi in a libel suit instituted against The Sun Newspaper.

The acting Chairman of the EFCC had sued the publishers of the newspaper before the court, for series of libelous publication against his person.

He is claiming N5 billion as damages in a letter written to the publishers of the newspaper.

He had also demanded a public apology and retraction of the said libelous publication dated March 25, 2017 in The Sun Newspaper.

The publication titled: “Magu Under Fresh Probe” had alleged that two houses located in a high brow area in Maitama, Abuja were traced to his wife by the Department of State Security (DSS).

He said The Sun publications damaged his person and character nationally and internationally.

Magu contended that there was no iota of truth in the publication by The Sun newspaper.

The publication is totally false. Even if I have the money, I wouldn’t buy houses in Maitama, ” Magu maintained.

They said the houses are located in the Darrubbe and Missouri, Maitama and that they belong to my wife.

My wife Fatima Yakaka Magu is a civil servant and cannot afford to buy houses in Maitama.

I am international man and the publication has damaged my reputation. The name Magu does not only end with me. The publication caused a whole lot of trauma for my lineage, ” Magu said.

However, while under cross examination by defence counsel, Charles Enwelunta, Magu said his wife is not a party in the suit he filed against the defendant.

Are you sure you read the story very well?” Enwelunta asked Magu.

Yes I read it over and over again and they did not say DSS was investigating my wife,” Magu said.

Magu told the court that his appointment was to be confirmed by the Senate but that he does not know why the upper chamber declined to do so twice, when asked by the defence to name the arm of the government that was to confirm his appointment.

He however said that he was not worried about the refusal of the Senate to confirm his appointment.

When Enwelunta took him up on his activities in the EFCC, Magu maintained that he secure 200 convictions in court in respect of cases bordering on corruption.

He said the Senate was in a better position to say why they rejected him adding, “ I have been there for three years and Nigerians are watching”.

Magu admitted knowing Inda Sule Moses, Lawal Mammah, Najeeb Iman and Adebayo Adeleke Rafiu with whom he faced the Senate during the screening exercise.

He said it was of no importance to him if there are forces trying to get him out of office. .

Justice Okuwobi has adjourned the matter till February 28, 2019 for further hearing.

  • Defection: We’ll carry out APC’s order on Dogara when House reconvenes – Rep

Lawmaker representing Akoko-Edo in the House of Representatives, Peter Akpatason on Wednesday said loyal members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House will carry out the party’s instruction on Speaker Yakubu Dogara.
Akpatason spoke to journalists in Benin on Wednesday, against the backdrop of the recent defection of the speaker to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He said that when the house reconvened, “the needful” would be done regarding the leadership of both chambers of the National Assembly.
The lawmaker however emphasised that whatever that would be done to address the issue, would be according the law of land.
According to the former NUPENG President, it is an aberration for a member of another political party to continue to be speaker of the house of the representatives.
“We, as party loyalists, will carry out any instruction we get from the party. We will study the situation when we get back. Whatever the situation is will be what we will react to.
“We cannot be happy to have a speaker that belongs to another party. It is an aberration and has to be treated as such,” he said.
Speaking on the ongoing APC primaries, Akpatason, who is seeking a return ticket to the House of Representatives, said his constituent were in support of his third term bid.
According him, the postponement of the party’s primaries for the NASS would make the aspirants to lose money.
He said that any money already given out for “logistics” would not be returned when elections were postponed.
The lawmaker also warned the APC leadership against manipulation of the party’s primaries.
Akpatason noted that direct primaries was not prone to manipulation like the indirect primaries in which delegates could be bribed.
According to him, whoever is planning to manipulate the primaries does not love the party hence the need to watch out for moles.
“Such a person wants the APC to lose in the main election. If this election is manipulated, chances of the APC winning the general elections will be slim.
“In a situation where you sit down and select people based on sentiments and not on individual popularity and ability to win elections, people will have other options,” he added.

  • How Ondo ex-deputy governor’s daughter was killed in my house – Boyfriend

How Ondo ex-deputy governor’s daughter was killed in my house – Boyfriend

Saidu-Shakiru Adeyemi, the boyfriend of Miss Khadijat Oluboyo, the slain daughter of Lasisi Oluboyo, former deputy governor of Ondo State, has denied involvement in her death.

Miss Oluboyo, the 25 year-old final year student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, was on Sunday found dead at the home of her boyfriend in Akure, the state capital.

Mr Adeyemi denied involvement in Oluboyo’s death when he faced journalists at the headquarters of the Ondo State Police Command on Wednesday in Akure.

According to him, it was the slain girl that brought two boys into his room, who eventually killed her.

Mr Adeyemi explained that he had dated Oluboyo for four years before they parted ways in 2015, and that they only reconciled after the last Ramadan celebration.

Adeyemi, who completed his National Youth Service in 2017, said he had no reason to kill her because he hoped to use her father’s connection to secure job.

He said that Khadijat came to his house on Thursday because of her project which he was helping her to do.

According to him, they had finished chapter one and her supervisor had already approved it and she came for final correction so that she could move to chapter two.

He explained further that the girl later travelled to Lagos on Friday to buy some wrist watches but she forgot to drop her project with him and promised to return to school from Lagos.

Meanwhile, on Saturday she snapped both the soft and hard copy of her project to me on my WhatsApp for correction.

On Monday, I believed she was already in school when she sent me a text message to send her N2,000. But I was able to send only N1,000.

So, I was surprised when I heard a knock on my door later in the day and she entered my room.

She later told me that she wanted to receive some visitors in my place, and few minutes later she brought two boys in. I was not surprised because that was not her first time to bring someone to my house.

Later when they came in, we exchanged greetings and I left them in the room. But after 30 minutes, one of the boys called me in and I discovered he held a small gun in his hand while the other boy was on her, naked.

And I heard Khadijat saying ‘I will not tell anybody.’ The boy strangled her to death and threatened me not to shout or else they would kill me.

They later forced me to find a digger with which they dug the ground in my room and buried her

They are the ones that killed and buried her. I could not shout after they left because of the implication of what has happened, for I was sure nobody would believe me.

On the fifth day, I was not comfortable anymore, so I exhumed her body and confided in my younger brother who advised that we should inform our father about the development.

It was my father who informed the police before I was arrested,” Mr Adeyemi said.

Femi Joseph, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, who paraded Mr Adeyemi with other suspects, said he would soon be charged to court after completion of investigation.
