  • Bandits abduct new bride, 10 others while moving to groom’s house in Kaduna

There was pandemonium at Birnin Gwari Town in Kaduna State on Saturday night as suspected bandits abducted a newly wedded bride and ten others who were conveying her (the bride) to her husband’s house.

The incident took place at about 8 p.m, according to a report by Premium Times.

Confirming the kidnap, a former chairman of the local government who asked not to be named for security reasons said the gunmen operated with impunity as nobody challenged them.

They simply stopped a bus that was conveying the bride to her husband’s house with her relatives and friends numbering about 10. The incident took place about 55 kilometres from Birnin Gwari main town,” he said.

It was however learnt that three of the people abducted including a member of the bride’s entourage escaped and returned to the town on Sunday morning.

The Funtua road is now a danger zone because at any point they (bandits) can strike. They operate with impunity along that highway because it’s bordering Birnin Gwari and Katsina.

Our ‎vigilantes need little support to engage these bandits. The government needs to mobilise the vigilantes and support them to enable them discharge their work effectively,” the ex-council chairman said.

In a similar development, on Friday, two young men riding a motorcycle were also abducted along Uduwa community in Birnin Gwari.

One of the victims is the son of the Deputy Imam of Uduwa village and the abductors are demanding N3 million ransom.

Hussaini Iduwa, a community leader and resident of Oduwa town in Birnin Gwari, confirmed the abduction in a telephone interview.

When contacted, the Kaduna State police spokesperson, Aliyu Muktar, said the command was not informed of the incidents.

  • 10 dead as light plane crashes into house in Philippines

Ten people, including three children, were killed on Saturday when a twin-engine light aircraft crashed into a house in the northern Philippines, officials said.

The Piper 23 Apache plane had just taken off from an airport in the town of Plaridel in Bulacan province when it stalled and plunged, said the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.

The plane, which was on its way to the northern city of Laoag, was carrying four passengers and the pilot, who were all killed in the crash, Aviation Authority spokesman, Eric Apolonio, said.

The co-pilot, who was on the flight manifest, reported that he was not able to go on the trip, he added.

The aircraft burst into flames as it crashed into the house in a nearby village, killing five residents, according to Plaridel town Mayor Jocell Vista Casaje.

Three children aged 7, 10 and 17 years were among those killed in the house. We just retrieved the last body from the gutted house,” Casaje said.

The father of the family that lived in the house said his two sons, wife, daughter and mother-in-law were home during the accident, said Felicisima Mungcal, head of the provincial disaster relief agency.

The house was totally gutted by the fire,” she said, adding that the victims were reportedly having lunch when the accident happened.

The father of the family, who arrived after some bodies had already been retrieved, was “very distraught but accepted it was an accident,” Casaje said.

Investigators have yet to determine what caused the plane crash. Aviation authorities have grounded all aircraft of the company that operated the ill-fated Piper 23 Apache.

  • House committee commends NIMASA on budget implementation

…As Dakuku assures Committee on Accountability

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has received commendations from the House of Representatives Committee on Maritime Safety, Education and Administration for its performance in the 2017 budget implementation adding that NIMASA should strive to improve on its performance in 2018.

The commendation was made by the House Committee led by its Chairman, Hon. Mohammed Umaru Bago who expressed delight on the Agency’s strides in repositioning the Nigerian maritime sector since the inception of this administration during an oversight visit to the Agency today.

Speaking shortly after listening to a presentation from the Agency on 2017 budget performance, which was based on the five transformation agenda of the Dr. Dakuku led Management, Hon. Bago noted that there have been improvements in the Agency’s activities in the last year and it is a welcome development for the nation’s maritime industry.

While also commending the Agency on the feat achieved in the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP) through the sea time training, which was hitherto a challenge in the recent past, the Committee urged the Agency to fast track the delivery of the fifth largest floating dock to Nigeria as it will help mitigate capital flight and also create more jobs.

“We are have visited beneficiaries of NSDP in some countries, in Egypt for example we discovered over 300 cadets undergoing sea time training. As a Committee, we will continue to give the Agency the required legislative backing in ensuring that it achieves its mandate in order to ensure a robust maritime sector”, Hon. Bago said.

On his part, the Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dakuku Peterside expressed appreciation to the committee for their unalloyed support to the course of the Agency, reiterated the Agency’s commitment to continue to make accountability its watchword and the Agency’s resolve to continue to cooperate with the Committee in the interest of the maritime industry and the country as a whole.

According to the DG, “when you are given an assignment, you are expected to be accountable; you are expected to conduct the assignment in a transparent manner and that is exactly what NIMASA is doing. We have the mandate to promote and regulate shipping activities in Nigeria and we have to continue to engage all Stakeholders both locally and internationally and assure them of a conducive environment for their businesses to thrive”, the DG said.

Also in the area of capacity development, which is one of the five strategic pillars of the current leadership of the Agency to revamp the sector, the DG stated that training and retraining of staff has been a major focus, which has helped in improving productivity and professionalism of the workforce.

Dr. Peterside who assured the Chairman and members of the Committee that the Agency will continue to collaborate with the committee also welcomed the call for synergy between the Executive and Legislative arms of government for the benefit of Nigerians.

In his words, “The beauty of democracy is collaboration, synergy between the Executive and the Legislative arms of government. It is not we versus them; we are all working for a single purpose to help Nigerians. We are working to help the Nigerian people to ensure that life is better for all our people. No single arm of government can do it alone; we must work in a collaborative manner”.

It may be recalled that in the last two years of the Dr. Dakuku Peterside’s led administration several transformation has taken place and this has been made possible through continuous collaboration with Stakeholders, both locally and internationally.

  • House joins bid to raise $500m for completion of Ajaokuta Steel project

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara on Monday confirmed that the House will join in the bid to raise $500million needed to complete the last phase of the Ajaokuta Steel project.

He said except the political will is lacking, getting the funds to complete the company should not be an issue, given the importance of the firm to the country’s development.

Dogara spoke in Kogi State when he led a delegation of lawmakers to the state, which hosts the long-neglected steel firm.

Dogara said the lawmakers would not support any move to privatize the company because doing so would be tantamount to “concessioning Nigeria’s future”

The speaker described as “a collective shame to all leaders that the project is yet to be completed after so many years”

He said the House would consult with stakeholders to work out ways to source for the $500 million adding that leadership problem was responsible for why the project was ledt uncompleted.

He said there were many ways through which the $500 million could be sourced. He listed the Sovereign Wealth Fund, the Excess Crude Account and the recovered financial crimes loot.

The Speaker said the House would invite Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman Ibrahim Magu to brief the House on how much his agency had recovered from corruption proceeds that could be pumped into the completion of the project.

He explained that his determination to ensure that the steel company is revived is borne out of the promises that the company held for Nigeria’s teeming population in the form of power and gas development, economic boost, thousands of jobs creation, development of manufacturing sector, development of infrastructure and investor appeal, among others.

He said: “Imagine if this plant had been completed in 1986, where Nigeria would be at the moment.

Any patriotic Nigerian that visits this place will shed tears irrespective of the part the person is from and for a foreigner that visits here, when he hears people describe this place as a shithole, he will go with the impression that it may be true. We have no reason not to complete that plant.

You cannot concession your future, it is never done. I’m yet to see a nation that even concessions its bedrock and still succeeded. If you see one, just tell me. And that’s why previous attempts to concession it were not possible.

We keep doing repeating the same things and expecting to get different results. That’s the definition of stupidity and since we are not stupid, we will not repeat it. We can make Nigeria proud so that every black man in the world can beat his chest. Anyone who plans to outsource the completion of this plant will definitely run into problems with us.”

The team also visited Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello where Dogara said:

We all know the benefits of steel development. You cannot be an industrialised nation without developing the steel sector.

Of course, I’ve seen the resolution that was passed and adopted by the Kogi State House of Assembly but I feel that this is just not a Kogi issue, this is a Nigerian issue in view of the major promise that this sector holds for Nigeria.

I believe that as soon as we put this plant into operation, immediately there will be 10,000 jobs for engineers and technical staff. That’s even as the level of the first phase and talk about other non-engineering staff, thousands again and other splinter opportunities that will come, that’s a projected two million jobs.

We don’t need money, all we need is leadership. Wherever you see development anywhere in the world, it is not money that brought it, but leadership. As a matter of fact, it is even leadership that brings the money.”
