    Tottenham announce Hugo Lloris departure

Premier League club Tottenham have announced the departure of Hugo Lloris for LAFC.

The French goalkeeper leaves Spurs for the MLS club after 11 years with the club.

A club statement from Spurs read: “We can confirm that Hugo Lloris will depart the Club on a permanent transfer to MLS side Los Angeles FC. One of our greatest servants, seventh on our all-time appearance list with 447 in all competitions, captain for nine years, Hugo will end an 11-year association with us for a new adventure in America.

“Signed from Lyon on 31 August, 2012, Hugo was 25 at the time, had 38 caps to his name for France and faced competition from Brad Friedel and Carlo Cudicini. He eventually secured the number one spot in November, 2012, and never looked back.

“Fast-forward over 11 years, and Hugo can look back with pride on his time in N17. Named captain in November, 2014, he wore the armband until injury ended his 2022/23 season early in April, 2023. He led us out in the Champions League Final in 2019.

“In that time, he became the first player to reach 300 appearances for us in the Premier League and remains our leading appearance maker in the competition on 361 – one of only two players to go past that 300 mark, alongside Harry Kane. He kept 127 clean sheets, placing him 12th in the league’s all-time standings. He’s one of only 17 goalkeepers to keep 100-plus clean sheets in the Premier League.”

EPL: I’m shocked at fans reactions towards Davidson – Lloris

Tottenham goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris has been left shocked by the actions of the club’s supporters towards defender Davinson Sanchez during the defeat to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday.

Stoppage time winner from Dango Ouattara sealed a 3-2 win for the Cherries in north London and denied Tottenham the opportunity to move into the top four following Newcastle United’s 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

Spurs were 1-0 up in the 35 minutes when Sanchez was brought on to replace the injured Clement Lenglet, thanks to Heung-min Son’s effort.

But Bournemouth levelled things three minutes later with Pedro Porro caught in possession after receiving the ball from Sanchez.

Sanchez then turned the ball into Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke’s path for the visitors’ second goal.

Just 28 minutes after he was brought on, caretaker manager Cristian Stellini made the change with Arnaut Danjuma coming on to replace Sanchez and Spurs fans booed the defender as he left the pitch.

“It started earlier when he came on earlier. I’ve never seen this in my career. I feel really bad for Davinson because he is a teammate and a friend,” Lloris told BeIN Sport after the game.

“He’s been fighting for Spurs for many years now.

“The story is sad for the club, for the fans and the player’. You don’t want to see it in football.”

Kyllian Mbappe to replace Hugo Lloris as France national team captain

Following the retirement of Hugo Lloris from International football, Kylian Mbappe  has been named the captain of the France senior national team.

According to a source close to the team, Paris Saint-Germain forward Mbappe, 24, agreed to captain the France national team after the proposal was thrown at him by coach Didier Deschamps on Monday.

Tottenham goalkeeper Lloris brought an end to his international career in January after losing the World Cup final a month earlier.

Lloris, 36, had been skipper for more than a decade.

Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann was named vice-captain after Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane also hung up his boots following the defeat to Argentina in December

Mbappe, who has played 66 times for his country, had been heavily linked with the role for weeks and scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final loss after helping Les Bleus to the title in 2018.

The former Monaco attacker is vice-captain at PSG behind Brazil’s Marquinhos and led the side in the defender’s absence during Sunday’s loss to Rennes.

His first game as captain will be Friday’s Euro 2024 qualifier against the Netherlands at the Stade de France.

EPL: Conte speaks on Lloris’ own goal against Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur manager, Antonio Conte has expressed how he felt considering Lloris’ own goal against Arsenal on Sunday.

The Manager has refused to heap the blame on the goalie saying that such thing happens in football.

The former France skipper parried Bukayo Saka’s cross into his own net to give the Gunners the lead.

The French goalkeeper then failed to keep out Martin Odegaard’s long-range effort which sealed the points.

Conte, speaking after the game, insisted that Lloris remains one of the best stoppers in the world.

“I consider Hugo one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

“It can happen. Sometimes you can make a mistake,” Conte said.

Lloris’s gaffe this season has cost Tottenham Hotspurs a lot of games this season.

Tottenham are presently occupying the 5th position with 33 points from 19 games.

  • Mbappe considered for Les Bleus’ captainship after Lloris’ retirement

Mbappe considered for Les Bleus’ captainship after Lloris’ retirement

Paris Saint-Germain boss, Christophe Galtier has hinted that Kyllian Mbappe could be pronounced France’s captain.

He added that if the player is chosen he will be taking on “a huge responsibility” on his shoulder following goalkeeper Hugo Lloris’ retirement from international football.

Although, Galtier described Mbappe as a leader, he noted that he hasn’t spoken to him yet about being chosen as France’s new captain.

Mbappe has already won 66 caps for Les Bleus, scoring 36 goals in the process.

The 24-year-old won the 2018 FIFA World Cup and scored a hat-trick against Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar, but he painfully finished on the losing team.

The former Monaco star appears an obvious candidate, but he may not aspire to the captaincy, which Lloris held for ten years.

Another contender for the vacant position is Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane, he served as assistant to Lloris at the just concluded FIFA World Cup held in Qatar.

Speaking ahead of PSG’s Ligue 1 tie with Angers on Wednesday night, Galtier said on Tuesday at his pre-match press conference: “I am not the national team coach. I am not going to get involved in the France captain discussion.

“Sometimes, the France captain is of a certain age with a certain number of caps.

“Kylian Mbappe has got many under his belt and many incredible performances. I have not spoken to Kylian Mbappe about whether he’ll be the France captain or not.

“Of course, that is a huge responsibility. It’s not me who will decide who the captain will be. Even without the armband, he is a leader.”

France number one shot-stopper, Lloris retires from international football

France and Tottenham number one  goalkeeper,  Hugo Lloris has announced his retirement from international football.

This is coming hours after former teammate, Wales’ Gareth Bale made same announcement.

Meanwhile, the 2018 World Cup and 2022 finalist announced his retirement from international football on Monday.

In a statement, the goalkeeper said it was time to hand over to the younger one to carry on.

“There comes a time when you have to know how to hand over,” Lloris told L’Equipe.

“I don’t want to take over, I have always said and repeated that the French team does not belong to anyone.”

The Tottenham man said he was certain the team is ready to continue without him, recommending Mike Maignan to take over from him.

“Prefer to go out when I’m at my best than wait for a slump,” he added.

  • Why we lost to Chelsea in League Cup – Lloris

Why we lost to Chelsea in League Cup – Lloris

Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris admits they lacked fight for their Carabao Cup semifinal first-leg defeat at Chelsea.

Spurs will need to overturn a 2-0 deficit in next Wednesday’s second leg at home after twice conceding from mistakes in the opening 35 minutes.

“The way we started the game allowed the opponent to believe and to put us in trouble,” Lloris said. “The first half was the image of the lack of aggressiveness but in the second half we showed a good face – a lot of commitment from all the players. We took more risks, we created some good actions and at the end, it’s 2-0 down and there’s still one game to play.

“We have to believe because in football anything can happen. With energy, with belief, with the help of our crowd, hopefully we’re going to deliver a great night.

“After that game, there were some disappointments and also some regrets. The way we started the game is a bit frustrating. Because you are playing a semi-final. At least if you cannot play good football, you have to be ready to fight, compete and be more aggressive than the opponent.”

Reflecting on two sloppy goals, Lloris added: “You know when there’s a lack of aggressiveness on the pitch, at some moment in the game you’re going to pay for it. Unfortunately it cost us the two goals.

“We cannot forget that in front of us is one of the greatest teams in Europe. They won the Champions League last season and they’re much in advance of us in terms of process. If we want to grow as a team, we need to learn from that type of performance.

“There was something in the balance – you play a semi-final, there was expectation and unfortunately the first half has to be analysed by ourselves.”

Lloris added: “We know when you play two legs, the most important thing is that at the end of the first leg there is still a chance to go through.

“We didn’t concede the third goal, unfortunately we could not score that goal which would allow us to believe even more. We know in football you can change a result very quickly with good energy, a bit of luck, good discipline. We have time, we have one week.

“There is still an FA Cup game [against Morecambe] this weekend but it’s not over. This is the message. We will need our fans behind us and we’ll have to play an amazing game to turn qualification on our side.”

  • Hugo Lloris upset with Benzema claims

Hugo Lloris upset with Benzema claims

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is upset with the way he was protrayed by the French media during Euro 2020.

Lloris has rubbished claims he was unhappy with the recall of Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.

He told L’Equipe: “There are so many things that have been said wrongly… But to have said that I would have criticised the coach for not having warned me about the return of Karim was totally false.

“It was information that was based on dishonest sources. To say that the executives demanded the return of Karim is as false as to say that they were against his return. Karim was exemplary and didn’t ask for anything, so this controversy bothered me.

“The coach has always been the only decision-maker, he does not have to justify himself, and I have never been concerted for anyone. I know where I belong, I am only the captain of the selected players. And I am professional and honest. But I’ve been here for thirteen years, and I know how it goes as soon as the France team is in trouble.”

  • Tottenham set to replace Lloris with England goalkeeper

Tottenham set to replace Lloris with England goalkeeper

Tottenham are ready to replace Hugo Lloris with an England goalkeeper this summer.

The Sun says Dean Henderson (Manchester United), Nick Pope (Burnley) and Sam Johnstone (West Brom) are in Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad that met up on Monday.

And the trio are all on Spurs’ shortlist to replace Lloris as their No 1.

The club captain, who delivered a stunning outburst at Jose Mourinho’s squad after last week’s Europa League exit to Dinamo Zagreb, has just a year left on his deal.

He is tipped to want to return home to France his summer, leaving Spurs looking closer to home for a successor.

Lloris, 34, has played 363 times for Spurs since they signed him from Lyon for £11m in 2012.

He has been linked with a summer switch to join former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino at Paris Saint-Germain.

  • Tottenham captain blasts ‘mentally weak’ teammates

Tottenham captain blasts ‘mentally weak’ teammates

Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris blasted his teammates after their dismal Europa League elimination at the hands of a rampant Dinamo Zagreb.

Spurs were sent crashing out by a brilliant Mislav Orsic hat-trick as they blew a two-goal lead from the first leg.

The capitulation piles the pressure on Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho, coming just four days after their limp North London derby defeat to fierce rivals Arsenal.

Asked how the players were feeling after their humbling, the goalkeeper pulled no punches, saying: “Good question. I think we are all more than disappointed.

“It’s just a disgrace. I just hope everyone in the changing room feels responsible for the situation, because it’s a disgrace.

“What more can I say about it? Talking about the game from Sunday, I think it is not the right moment.

“Just the taste of the defeat tonight is more than painful and we are all responsible for that.

“Obviously we are a club which is full of ambition but I just think the team at the moment is a reflection of what’s going on in the club.”

Lloris said Tottenham had been punished for failing to master the basics – and for underestimating their opponents.

“We have a lack of basics, lack of fundamentals and all our performance is just in relation to that,” said the France international.

“I think mentally we should be stronger, we should be more competitive. Today, I didn’t feel that on the field, unfortunately.

“When you are not ready at this level you pay straight away.

“It doesn’t matter who the opponent is, there is quality everywhere in the Europa. If you don’t respect the opponent it’s kind of permission and that’s what happened today.

“Full credit belongs to the opponent as well because they played the game full of belief, but the blame is on us, all the team, all the club. We are guilty.”

Asked to expand, he added: “I don’t have to go deeper. I mean it’s not possible.

“The way we play is just not enough, not enough. It’s one thing to come in front of the camera to say we’re ambitious, the other is to show it every day in training sessions, to show it every time on the pitch.

“You cannot let it down, if you play or don’t play. To behave as a team is the most difficult thing in football, whatever is the decision of the manager you have to follow the way of the team.

“If you follow the team only when you are in the starting XI, that causes big problems for the team because you pay in one moment and you’re going to pay in your season.

“Today I think is the consequence of that. We had great moments in the past because we could trust the togetherness that was in the team.

“Today, I’m not sure, I don’t know about that.
