    Hunger Protest: Businessman shot dead In Kebbi

    Security operatives of the Kebbi State Police Command have allegedly shot dead a businessman during the hunger protests in the state.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that protesters across the country came out amass to call on President Bola Tinubu to reverse certain policies believed to be behind the economic hardship.

    TNG gathered that in a bid to disperse protesters near Yauri Rive, a policeman shot sporadically,  killing a businessman in his shop in Yauri Local Government Area of the state after a stray bullet hit him.

    Narrating the incident, an eyewitness, Malam Umar Bako Yelwa, said marine police fired bullets to disperse the protesters who became violent, blocking the federal highway in Yauri town.

    He added that a stray bullet hit and killed the innocent plastic seller in his shop.

    Another eyewitness, however, said “the police were shooting indiscriminately despite the peaceful procession by the protesters thereby killing an innocent man.”

    The Kebbi State Police Command has not reacted to the development.

    Despite the shooting and killing, protesters in other parts of the state were seen chanting “end bad governance”, bring back fuel subsidyamong others.

    The Nigerian police, Niger State command reportedly shot six protesters dead, leaving many others with various degrees of injuries in the ongoing hunger protest in Suleja.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) learnt that the policemen who were struggling to dislodge a group of protesters who mounted a barricade on a section of the Abuja-Kaduna highway, shot the victims, killing them at an instant.

    The incident led to an outrage as protesters struggled with the reinforcement team, which was sent to restore sanity to the area.

    A resident identified as Yahaya Nda Isah, was reportedly hit by a stray bullet while on his bike in front of the Suleja Police ‘A’ division, where protesters had assembled.

    A nephew of the deceased told Daily Trust that, the deceased an uncle of his, did not join the protest but was on his bike when the bullet fired to disperse the protesters hit him on his chest, and he died on the spot.

    He said, “He was my uncle. He was not even protesting. He was passing in front of the Police ‘A’ division where some people were protesting when stray Bullet hit him on his chest and he died. As I speak with you, I am in his house alongside other mourners. It’s unfortunate.”

    Another victim identified as Mallam Abu reportedly died on the spot with three other people shot at the same scene while 2 others were shot at the Suleja Junction on Abuja-Kaduna road.

    SP Wasiu Abiodun, a Spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, said some hoodlums also attempted to set the Tafa LGA ablaze, but security operatives dispersed them.

    He said, “The miscreants attempted to set the Tafa LGA ablaze, they were dispersed by the Police and military. Kaduna road and toll gate was cleared.”

    The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijanj has reacted to the looting of Digital Innovation Park in Kano slated for launch next week.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that protesters on Thursday, August 1 invaded government offices in Kano State, looting properties as the hunger protest begins.

    Reacting, the minister via the microblogging platform, X formerly Twitter condemned the looting after which disclosed that the technical talent accelerator was set ablaze and looted by protesters.

    He said, ”Sad to learn that our Digital Innovation Park in Kano slated for launch next week to support our technical talent accelerator (3MTT) has been set ablaze and looted by protesters.

    “Alongside #3MTT, this building is set to host our buildathon holiday maker programme for secondary school kids starting next week.

    “A slight setback for our journey to deepening our workforce for technology while creating job opportunities for the youth. Millions of Naira down the drain.”

    The protesters took to the streets today, August 1st, to call on President Bola Tinubu to reverse certain policies believed to be behind the harsh economy.

    A middle aged woman looking dejected on Thursday joined EndBadGovernance protesters in Lagos State with an empty cooking pot

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the woman who looked unkempt joined the procession at the Oregun area of Ikeja.

    The woman, who was with a man who appears to be her husband, said in Yoruba language that she was hungry.

    Recall that, protesters had converged on Ikeja Undebridge where they are expected to move to the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota amid tight security.

    Amongst the security operatives tagging along the protesters include the operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC); the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC).

    Hunger protest: Lagos roads deserted, businesses shut as security tightens

    The streets of Lagos, banks, fuel stations, small businesses on Thursday chose to be closed as the hunger protest officially kicked off today August 1st.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathered that the streets are empty, a major protest site, Ojota isn’t a bubbling spot as there is a heavy security armored personnel carriers and police vehicles strategically presence.

    The Lagos State Police Command’s CP Tactical Squad is reportedly actively monitoring the situation at Egbeda Bus Stop.

    The roads, are free, with commercial buses, known as Danfos handful as there are rarely passengers on site.

    The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) terminals are also deserted, with no buses in sight.

    Travellers are not left out, as parks in Ojota, Berger are deserted of bus.   

    Meanwhile, subscribers of top telecommunication giant, MTN have expressed frustration over the devastatingly slow network which is being experienced across the country.

    Residents are seen loitering on major roads such as Palmgroove, Onipanu, Ojota, Ikeja, Ikotun engaging in conversation, consuming alcohol, and smoking.

    Although, in areas such as Ikeja, pro government protestors preaching against violent protest have converged ahead of the rally.

    This heightened security and the widespread closures reflect the tension and uncertainty gripping Lagos as citizens express their frustration over the prevailing economic conditions.

    A yet-to be identified elderly man on Thursday hits the streets of Kano to begin the #EndBadGoverance protest.

    In the photos that surfaced on social media, the elderly man was spotted marching around Farwa-Marriri axis on the popular Maiduguri highway holding placards with words written in Hausa.

    “The suffering is too much; we must register our grievances. It’s our right to do so,” the man said.

    Nigerians in Port Harcourt and Abuja have taken to the street to protest  the lingering hunger and economic hardship under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the #EndBadGovernance protests, which have gained significant traction on social media, are scheduled to take place from today August 1 to 10.

    Human rights lawyers; Femi Falana, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, Deji Adeyanju; former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, the Take It Back movement had called for a nationwide protest against hunger and bad governance in the country.

    In the videos and photos that surfaced on social media, protesters in Port Hacourt are seen congregating in front of the popular pleasure park.

    While in Abuja, protesters converged as early as 6am singing solidarity songs  at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

    TNG understand that heavily armed security operatives are present at the stadium.

    Hunger Protest: Nigerian varsity grants lecture free period

    The Abia State University on Wednesday granted a one-week lecture-free period to ensure the safety of its staff and students.

    The university’s Registrar, Acho Elendu in a directive which was contained in a statement said “the Senate of Abia State University has approved the lecture-free week, effective immediately from July 31, 2024”.

    The management noted that the intent of the decision is to give students more time to prepare for the upcoming 2023/2024 first semester examinations, which are scheduled to commence on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

    The university further advised all staff members and students to avoid unnecessary travel during this period to ensure their safety.

    The statement also urged the university community to adhere to the guidelines provided.

    The locations for the upcoming nationwide hunger protest slated for August 1, to 10 2024 have emerged.

    TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) reports that organizers behind the planned protest against hunger, hardship, bad governance detailed the locations in a letter signed by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa.

    The letter was addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

    The letter reads:

    “Dear Sir,

    “RE: NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETINGS/RALLIES/PROCESSIONS AND REQUEST FOR POLICE COVERAGE

    “We act as solicitors to the TAKE IT BACK MOVEMENT, and refer to our letter on the above subject-matter dated July 26, 2024 and your response thereto dated July 29, 2024, Ref. CJ:2400/IGP.SEC/ABJ/VOL.1/10, which we have passed to our Client with instructions to respond thereto as follows.

    “Our Client acknowledges the commitment of the Inspector-General of Police towards complying with extant legislations granting citizens the right to hold public meetings, public rallies and public processions and the lawful discharge of the obligations placed upon the police to provide adequate coverage and protection at the venues.

    “We shall be glad to have the contact details of the Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, and the Commissioners of Police designated to cover the said public meetings, public rallies and public processions, to ensure a peaceful and crisis-free outing.

    “Please find below the details of SOME of the points of convergence for the said public meetings, rallies and processions.

    “1. ABUJA: Eagle’s Square, by the Secretariat, FCT, Abuja.

    “2. LAGOS: Alausa Park by the Secretariat, Ikeja.

    “3. BENIN: Opposite Wema Bank, Akpakpava Lane, Benin City.

    “4. BAUCHI: Opposite School of Agric, Bauchi, along Tafawa Balewa Road.

    “5. IBADAN: Rosewale Filling Station, Iwo Road, Ibadan.

    Otti tells Nigerian youths what to do ahead of hunger protest

    The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti has urged the youths involved in the planned nationwide protest on August 1 to exercise self restraints and resist temptation that may cause disharmony in the state.

    The governor during a public broadcast to Abians on Tuesday, argued that there is no need for protest with the prevailing peace and the unprecedented achievements recorded in the areas of infrastructure and well-being of Abians.

    Futhermore, he called on parents, religious leaders, and traditional rulers to prevail on their children to shun acts that could jeopardize the prevailing peace in the state.

    The governor also admonished the youths to adopt other alternatives to demonstrations and protests, including setting realistic timeline for the attainment of their demands and assured that the federal government has adopted measures that will address these inherited rots.

    Acknowledging the hardship currently ravaging the land and the right of the youths to protest, Otti said: “I urge Abia youths to exercise self-restraints and engage their leaders with a charter of demands with a realistic deadline”.

    He stressed the determination of the state government to protection of lives and properties of the citizens, pointing out that violence has never been an option rather dialogue.

    It would be recalled that the Abia governor on Sunday advised those planning to organise the nationwide protest to get police approval.

    Otti spoke when Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, visited him at his country home in Nvosi, Isialangwa south LGA of Abia.
