“We were forced to find ways to protect the coffin since it was raining and all mourners were humiliated as we looked helpless outside the hut,” added the mourner.

My wife is adulterous, husband tells court to dissolve marriage

A man, Olalekan Babalola on Thursday, sought the dissolution of his 13-year-o marriage at an Agege Customary Court, Lagos, alleging that his wife, Olushola Babalola, is adulterous and deceitful.

Olalekan, who is the respondent in a divorce suit filed by his wife, accused Olushola of infidelity.

He said that his wife packed out of their matrimonial home to join another man.

The respondent said that he had a tough life while growing up in a polygamous home and would not wish same for his three children.

“Although, l cannot force my wife to come back home, l do not want my children to grow in a separated home.

“I called my wife on phone and told her that I was not begging her to come back home, but she should at least check on the children.

“Instead, my wife told me that she wouldn’t come to the house, that I should bring the children to her or forget about it,’’ he said.

Olalekan said that he discovered after some years that Olushola had earlier given birth to two other children before he met her although, one of them had died.

“She claimed that the other child was her sister’s own but l found out later that she owned the child and she did not deny it.

“I was heartbroken and it affected my health and job,” he said.

However, the petitioner, Olushola, urged the court to dissolve the marriage for her husband’s insults on her.

She said that her husband refused to marry her legally and insulted her whenever she brought up the issue.

“My husband said that only fools bother to legalise their marriages.

“My husband takes delight in insulting me at anytime, saying that l am frivolous and adulterous.

“I am tired of this union and l pray the court to separate us so that we go our different ways peacefully without any form of threat,’’ she said.

The court president, Mrs Ibironke Elabor, urged the estranged couple to maintain the peace and adjourned the case until September 4 for alternative dispute resolution.

  • I want my wife back – Mercy Johnson’s husband cries out

I want my wife back – Mercy Johnson’s husband cries out

Prince Odi Okojie, the husband of popular Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson, has revealed a sudden change in his wife’s behaviour since her mother passed on.

It seems that the mother of three is yet to get over the death of her mother.

The actress’s husband, who could no longer endure his wife change of behaviour, took to his Instagram handle lamenting.

He made this known while responding to a fan’s question on Mercy Johnson’s sudden weight loss.

His post reads: “Wife isn’t herself yet, she’s still trying to heal after moms death. She asked to see @hopefashion today since it’s her birthday so I had to support her. I want my playful best friend/Wife back ooo.”

He added that it was the first time the actress would leave the house ever since her mom’s death.

  • Ugandan women impose ‘sex tax’ on husbands

Schoolteacher Annet Nanozi was mad at her husband. A vehicle mechanic, he was refusing to help raise their four children. She realised he was instead spending his paycheck on alcohol and his time sleeping with barmaids.

The 34-year-old decided to teach her husband a lesson. Now, when he comes home and wants sex, he needs to pay her first.

It’s a controversial strategy, but it’s picking up across Uganda, as increasingly emboldened women — backed by rights organisations — battle a patriarchal society where responsibilities and moral norms are both skewed against them.

What started out with isolated instances in the capital, Kampala, has exploded into a tactic more and more Ugandan women are employing to get their husbands to pay up for household expenses and atone for refusing to take on home chores.

Three years ago, 150 women first reported demanding money from their husbands for sex to the Mothers Union, an Anglican organisation that has been in Uganda for more than a century, says the body’s secretary, Ruth Nalugwa.

That number increased to 5,000 by 2016, and now more than 30,000 women have reported employing the strategy, she says.

The actual number of wives charging their husbands for sex may be greater, says Stella Muyana, the chairperson of Bakazibano, a Ugandan women’s rights organisation. But her organisation has recorded more than 31,000 cases, she says.

In May, Uganda’s government-owned newspaper, The New Vision, reported on how what “started as a joke” is now “a reality.”

The spread of this practice is dividing Ugandan society. Some husbands have agreed to pay up, and a few have turned more responsible toward their families. Others have refused to pay for sex, and in some instances, demands from wives have spiraled into domestic violence — and even occasional deaths.

Some religious leaders and government ministers have weighed in against the practice, calling it “immoral” and “irreligious.”

But most women and rights organisations are supporting the strategy, arguing that any approach that gets irresponsible husbands to contribute toward the welfare of their families is justified. After all, it took hunger strikes and arson attacks from the suffragettes in the United Kingdom to drive a national conversation about voting rights for women.

“If the men are irresponsible and it is the only way their wives can get money from them to run the homes, let them go ahead and tax sex,” says Tina Musuya, a leading women’s rights activist and executive director of the nonprofit Centre for Domestic Violence Prevention.

In his reaction, Uganda’s Minister of Ethics and Integrity, Reverend Father Simon Lokodo, is against the growing practice. “Sex with his wife is a man’s right,” he argues.

“Denying a husband sex is unfair. Why should wives charge for sex in order to get economic gains?” he asks. To him, the practice shows “that moral fibers have gone so low.”

Rights activists are, however, clear that if anything, it’s unfair to expect a woman to enjoy sex with a man who doesn’t pay the family’s bills.

  • I was legally married to Omoge Campus till death – Husband

Husband to late Nollywood actress, Aisha Abimbola (popularly called Omoge Campus), Ibrahim Okunola has said he never divorced the late actress though they were seprated for about seven years.

Recall that Aisha died in Canada of complications from breast cancer. She since being buried.

Okunola speaking in an interview with The Punch said said, “It is a lie that we had divorced. We had not lived together for about seven years but we were still legally married till she died. The reason we were separated is a family issue. I would miss her till I die because she was a virtuous mother and a go-getter. I gave her the nickname, Magic Aisha because she had a way of achieving her dreams and goals. She was someone that would give you her shoulder to lean on and her listening ears no matter what you are going through. Even when she was not in my house again, if I had any issue in life, I always called her.”

Also a thespian like his wife, Okunola said that it was his late wife’s wish not to alert the public about her battle with cancer. He said that his hands were tied as he had to respect her wish.

Okunola described his wife as a fighter whom he believed would win the battle against cancer but sadly, she lost the fight. “The late Aisha was my wife and her death has made me very sad. I knew she had cancer but we did not see her death coming. I thought she was going to survive the battle against cancer because she was a fighter and she really fought cancer. Though most people did not know about her ailment, she gave cancer a good fight before she died. She did not tell people that she had cancer because she did not want people to pity her neither did she want to beg the public for money. Aisha was someone that respected my opinion and vice versa. Whenever she said something, I normally agreed with her. We discussed the issue of telling the public about her illness but she refused to open up to the public and I had to respect her opinion.

The last time I saw her was a week before she travelled out of the country and if I am correct that would be December 23, 2017. She wanted to travel with our children to America and she needed some documents so she asked me to come with the documents she needed because for about seven years, we had not been together but we were still legally married. We actually met in Femi Falana’s office for her to get the documents. After I had given her the required documents, I told her that she looked so lean, the next thing she did was to look at me and begin to weep. I had to comfort her and tell her that I would be with her in America the following year because I believed she was going to survive the illness being the fighter that she was. Sadly, she did not win the battle against cancer,” he said.

Okunola further seized the opportunity to thank his late wife’s boss, Saidi Balogun, for being a strong pillar of support for the family in their time of mourning. “I am also very grateful for the support of The Golden Movies Ambassadors of Nigeria led by Saidi Balogun. They did not only hold a successful candle light and prayer session for my late wife in Nigeria but they stood by our family in our time of grief,” he said.

The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday at the couple’s residence on Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, in Ajah area of Lagos State.
