FG cautions motorists against speeding on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

The Federal Government has cautioned motorists and other road users plying Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to drive cautiously and avoid speeding, especially during the Yuletide.

Mrs Forosola Oloyede, the Ogun Controller of Works, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, gave the advice on Saturday in Ibadan.

Oloyede, also an Engineer in charge of Section II of the expressway, spoke while supervising the removal of crash barriers and other diversion points on the highway for free flow of traffic at Soka and Sanyo areas of Ibadan.

She said that removal of the barriers was done in accordance with the directive from the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola.

According to her, Fashola had ordered that all barriers on the Federal Roads, where construction works are ongoing should be removed for free flow of traffic for the Yuletide season.

She said that removal of the barriers on the Section II of the highway, would enhance smooth traffic on the entire road stretch.

Oloyede, however, cautioned motorists not to be tempted to drive above speed limit, as a result of the road smoothness.

The controller said five pedestrian bridges would be constructed on the Section II of the road, adding that work on the pedestrian bridges would soon commence.

On the completion date, she said: “Initially, the project was scheduled to be completed by this December 2022, but we couldn’t keep to that date due to some hiccups beyond our control.

“But, I can assure you that this project will be completed by March 31, 2023.

In his remarks, Mr Naor Narkis, the Project Manager, Reynolds Construction Company (RCC), handling the project, said that work had reached 85 per cent completion stage.

Narkis assured Nigerians, especially motorists plying the road, that his company would deliver the project by March, 2023.

He said that RCC would soon go on break to allow its workers to go for Christmas and New Year Holidays, adding, “but, we will resume work by January 2023 to complete the project”.

Mr Adelaja Ogungbemi, on behalf of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), enjoined motorists to obey traffic rules and regulations during the Yuletide.

“Motorists and other road users should make efforts to drive safely on the road, such efforts should include consciousness.

“They should know that the road is not a place where you will not be serious, because driving during this Yuletide period requires you should know that there are dangers inherent on the road,” Ogungbemi said.

He urged motorists to always be patient while on the road, saying, “they should avoid speeding, overloading and use good tyres”.

Commenting, some motorists who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), commended the Federal Government and the construction company handling the project, for removing what they described as “obstruction” on the highway.

They also appreciated government for listening to the road users’ complaints about gridlock on Ibadan Toll Gate – Sawmill – Onipepeye Bridge axis of the highway.

Also, Mr Rotimi Adeniyi, a taxi driver plying Tollgate – Iwo Road route, said that removal of the barriers would improve his business, as he would be able to drive on smooth road without traffic, thereby make more money.

Also, John Olayemi, a commercial driver, plying Lagos-Ibadan route, said that removal of barriers on the Section I and II of the road would make him and other commercial drivers to spend less hours on the road.

Olayemi, expressing joy over the new development, implored contractor handling the project to ensure that it delivered quality job to enable the road to last longer.

On her part, Mrs Eunice Ogunsola, a civil servant residing at Soka area of Ibadan, said that the new development would make her get to work early at the State Secretariat.

According to her, it has not been easy in the last two months passing through the road to my office.

“We thank government and RCC for removing the barriers, at least it will lessen our pains and that of other road users.

“Before now, we spent hours in the gridlock caused by the obstruction, but now, things will improve,” Ogunsola said.

Moving the application for the interlocutory injunction on Wednesday, Counsel to IEDMCL Mr Dele Adesina, SAN, told the presiding judge Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke that the sole aim of the application is to preserve the Res until the substantive suit is determined so as not to foist a fait accompli on the court.

Adesina while making his submissions told the court that parties were before the court on 24th of October, 2022 wherein parties informed the court that parties are still exploring amicable settlement of the matter.
He,however added that while parties were in court and also exploring move for settlement, the plaintiff “AMCON” made a publication in the Leadership newspapers advertising move to sell the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company .

He urged the court to give an order to the effect that nothing should be done as regards the sale or dissipation of the the asset of Ibadan Disco until the final determination of the substantive suit which was instituted by AMCON through the Receiver Manager nominee.

In his reply to the application AMCON counsel , Mr Kunle Ogunba, SAN, accused IEDMCL of trying to hold the hand of AMCON from collecting its money from the applicant. He added that AMCON is not interested in the sale of Ibadan Disco but to divest its shares from the company. He said that is what the Central Bank of Nigeria ,CBN and the Bureau of Public Entreprises asked the Reciever Manager to do.

Ogunba also said that the applicant did not file a reply to their originating motion and consequently , the applicant did not have a defense against the Originating motion.

But in his reply on the issue , Adesina said Ogunba did not serve the respondent the Originating summons adding that they only got to know by searching the court file and obtained a certified true copy to which he later filed counter affidavit in opposition to the Originating summons.

While shedding light on the crux of the matter, Adesina said that out of the $162 million borrowed to acquire the Ibadan Electricity Distribution company and Yola Electricity Distribution Company, the applicant has paid $122 million leaving a balance of $38million apart from the accrued interest. The applicant is also claiming $97 million in their counter claim as additional payment due from the Federal Government on the Yola Disco. He then prayed the court to grant the motion for interlocutory injunction to preserve the Res pending the final determination of the suit.

But the judge asked the question, whether any party that has submitted to the jurisdiction of the court can take steps(to sell).

Justice Aneke after listening to counsel to both parties adjourned ruling on the interlocutory injunction till December 8, 2022.

“My mind goes to the five others who are still left with the kidnappers: two young ladies, two young men and a middle-aged person.

“I was shot at in the head during the abduction process. I thank God that the bullet that went through my car’s windscreen left only a skin-deep wound on my head even though it left a gaping hole in the cap I was wearing. I did not even know about this till Saturday morning when I saw caked blood on my cap,” Agbaje stated.

According to him, I am undergoing comprehensive health checks and so it may take some time to thank all my family, including my in-laws, friends and in-laws to my children, my own friends, colleagues and all Nigerians.

“They include: Mr Fisayo Soyombo, for their wonderful support and generosity to my family, top government, military, and other security officials.

“As stated earlier, my heart goes to those young female undergraduates, the young men and the middle-aged person I left behind with the kidnappers.

“I may not be reachable now, but as soon as I get medical clearance from my doctors, I will be thanking all of you personally.”
