  • 40-year-old man hangs self in Ibadan, another in Bayelsa

    A 40-year-old man, Lanre Kazeem, committed suicide early yesterday by hanging himself in his house, located at Eyin Grammar School, Molete area.

    It was gathered that Kazeem lived in a rented house and worked in a private palm kernel company around Soka, Ibadan, while he also had no known relatives or friends all through his one-year stay in the area.

    The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olugbenga Fadeyi, who confirmed the incident, disclosed that the body had been deposited at Adeoyo State Hospital’s mortuary.

    Fadeyi said: “The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Sanyo division, has visited the area to see what happened. Investigation has commenced on the matter to know what actually happened”.

    Some residents of the area told newsmen that the deceased hailed from Ogun State and left no suicide note behind to explain the cause of his action, while some of his neighbours claimed the deceased had been sick for close to two weeks without any medical care.

    Also speaking on the incident, the chairman, Eyin Grammar Landlords’ Association, Alhaji Lateef Adegoke, said the incident was reported to him and the police had taken the body to the mortuary.

    Meanwhile, the management of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, Ilorin, has condoled with the family of one of its students, Fatima Abdullah, who reportedly committed suicide in Abuja on June 18.

    This was contained in a statement issued by AbdulRazaq Sanni, the Director, University Relations, yesterday.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Fatima, a 300-Level student in the Faculty of Law, committed suicide at her home in Abuja.

    KWASU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Muhammed Akanbi, extended condolences to her family.

    While sympathising with family over the loss, Akanbi enjoined parents and guardians to be sensitive to their children and wards’ unusual behaviour, especially when they notice withdrawal syndrome in their attitude.

    Also at the weekend, a 28-year-old man, identified simply as Suga, committed suicide in Bayelsa State. Suga, who hailed from Nembe Local Government Area of the state, poisoned himself with a substance suspected to be insecticide after using his boss’ money worth N150,000 to play Bet9ja virtual games.

    A source, who craved anonymity, said Suga used to run a Bet9ja shop for his unnamed boss in Bassambiri Nembe area of the state. The source said the money the deceased used to play the virtual bets was meant for the day’s work.

    The source stated: “Suga, not knowing how to explain the situation to his boss, made him to take his own life.”

    The year-one student of the Federal College of Animal Health and Production in Ibadan was murdered on Tuesday in Akinyele area of Ibadan, Oyo state.

    It was gathered that her dad found her dead body around their home after her body was examined, they discovered that she was raped, then she got murdered.

    It was gathered that she has been buried according to Islamic rites.

    Her death has continued to attract outrage nationwide as Nigerians have taken to social media to express their displeasure over the rising cases of Rape in Nigeria with the hashtag #JusticeforBarakat.

    Two die as diesel-laden tanker explodes in Ibadan

    Two persons were killed while several shops and vehicles were burnt on Friday when a tanker ladened with diesel fell around the Moniya area of Ibadan and burst into flames.

    The incident led to traders, commuters and residents of the area scampering for safety as the inferno continued to increase with high intensity.

    The extent of damage and fatality, however, could not yet be ascertained as of the time of filing this report as firemen and sympathizers battled to put out the fire.

    Eyewitnesses told NAN that the fire started when the diesel laden tanker skidded.

    One of the eyewitnesses, Mr Tunde Adedayo, said that officials of the State Fire Service arrived at the scene about 35 minutes after the fire started.

    Adedayo said that there was a loud blast followed immediately by a huge ball of fire with a thick cloud of smoke while the fire kept burning every item on its path.

    “The diesel tanker had skidded and people started running up and down.

    ” There was confusion everywhere and people were crying for help.

    “No one could move near the fire and everybody was scrambling for safety,’’ Adedayo said.

    The Chief Fire Officer in Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Adewuyi Moshood, said his men arrived at the scene in good time considering the distance they covered to get to the spot of the incident.

    “The fire started when a fully laden tanker conveying diesel lost control while descending the slope beside a filling station at Moniya.

    “The brake failed and the vehicle crashed a vehicle going to Ogbomoso.

    “One passenger, who was trapped in the vehicle got burnt, One other life was also lost but we are yet to determine the number of casualties in the incident,’’ Moshood said.

    25-yr-old jailed for unlawful possession of Indian hemp in Ibadan

    A 25-year-old drug dealer, Afeez Owolabi, was on Monday sentenced to four months in prison by Justice Patricia Ajoku of the Federal High Court in Ibadan over unlawful possession of 350 grams of Indian hemp.

    Ajoku sentenced Owolabi based on the evidence before her and the fact that the convict pleaded guilty to the offence.

    “This judgme

    nt is in view of the plea of guilt entered by Owolabi and the implication of such on the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.

    “Also, the convict is a first time offender and that has demonstrated that he would turn a new leaf if given another chance.

    “Therefore, Owolabi is given a four month reformatory sentence.

    “The sentence starts from the date he was first arrested,” the judge said.

    Earlier, the counsel to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Oyo State, Mr Raphael Himinkaiye. had informed the court that the convict was arraigned on a one-count charge of unlawful dealing in narcotics.

    Himinkaiye said Owolabi committed the crime on Feb. 8 at Kobomoje area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

    According to him, the 25-year-old was apprehended with a sack containing 350 grams of the illicit substance.

    The offence, he said, contravened Section 11 (C ) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30 Law of the Federation, 2004.

    Breaking: EFCC nabs two brothers, 13 others over Internet fraud

    The Ibadan zonal office of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday arrested two brothers for alleged involvement in internet-related fraud.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the two brothers are Olanrewaju Olatunji, who is 19 years of age, and Femi Olatunji, who is 29 years old, according to an EFCC statement.

    The suspects were apprehended at Alafara area of Ibadan, Oyo State, following intelligence earlier received on their alleged illegal activities.

    The thirteen others, whose ages range between 16 and 48 years, include: Abiodun Ojo, Lawal Ahmed, Adedeji Olatunbosun, Adeniyi Ramon, and Oladipupo Oluwatobilola.

    Others are Ayomide Olawale, Elegbede Wale, Victor Adaramoye, Timileyin Adeniran, Kunmi Joshua, Tawfeeq Ibrahim, Funmbi Samuel and Adeyemo Yinka.

    New Year Tragedy! Three children of same parents burn to death in Ibadan

    Tragedy struck in Ibadan on Friday , when three children of same parents were killed in a midnight inferno after they were said to have been locked inside their apartment located at Ehin Grammar Area of Molete, Ibadan.

    Hundreds of sympathisers thronged the home where the incident occurred early Friday morning , while others were wailing , others were shouting the name of God over the sad occurence .

    Many of the sympathisers were seen asking how the children could have been locked up without both parents at home. Some among them , mostly women , were furious at the parents who were said to be away when the tragedy happened.

    One of the women , who gave her name as Adijat rained curses on the parents for what she described as sheer negligence .

    The one storey building was said to be one of the oldest in the area occupied by tenants , while the owners were not available for comment.

    The cause of the inferno , which they said started late in the midnight could not be immediately ascertained, but neighbours said it was from a candle light that caught some flammable objects in the room that led to the fire incident.

    The eldest, of the children, it was gathered was a secondary school student whose name was given as Glory while the two others were said to be in primary school.

    The father of the children, whose name was given as Baba Ara, an electrician, was said to have left the children in the room last night but no one could ascertain where he had gone to while the inferno lasted.

    His wife, also known as Iya Ara, was said to have gone to work as she was on a night shift.

    When contacted, the Oyo State Police Command spokesman , a Superintendent of Police ( SP) , Gbenga Fadeyi confirmed the incident.

    Fadeyi In a statement said “on 3rd January 2020 at the early hours, there was a fire incident at No 6, Orisunbare street, Eyin Grammar Ibadan where three children Glory Emmanuel, female, aged 14 years, Samuel Emmanuel, male, aged eight years, Darasimi Emmanuel, female, aged three years of the same mother were burnt to death in a eight rooms apartment.”

    He added that the “the Police have commenced investigation as to the cause of the fire incident.”

  • FG committed to free, compulsory basic education – Osinbajo

    The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Saturday reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government towards free and compulsory education of the first nine years of a child school life across the country.

    Osinbajo gave the commitment in Ibadan while speaking at the Divine Proclamation Service of the Dominion University,

    The Vice President recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari, had, on June 20, made the declaration, on free and compulsory education.

    He stressed that the assignment to provide free and compulsory education at the basic level was an important one for the government

    He, however, said that Federal government would not force any state to do so but would be working actively with states that chose to enforce the free and compulsory education.

    ”We will support them in whatever way we can to ensure that they achieve the objectives of free and compulsory education.” he said.

    Osinbajo commended Oyo state government under the leadership of Gov. Seyi Makinde, for keying into the free and compulsory education programme as declared by the Federal government.

    He described Makinde as visionary leader from his commitment to the provision of free education for children in both public primary and secondary schools in the state.

    Osinbajo saluted the courage and passion of Bishop Taiwo Adelakun, the Founder of the Dominion University, towards provision of quality education.

    He called on well meaning Nigerians and philanthropists to support government and private universities toward quality education delivery in the country.

    In his address at the occasion, Makinde, said that free and qualitative education had come to stay in Oyo state under his administration.

    ” Though we understand that four years is not enough to really get to where we are going but it is enough to lay solid foundation upon which successive administrations will build on. ” he said.

    He said his administration would make the necessary investment without minding who would take the glory down the line.

    He congratulated Bishop Adelakun for setting up the university and asserted that the proclamation of the institution would be the beginning of the journey that would produce the kind of leaders that Nigerians want.

    FG suspends 2019 teachers professional qualifying exam in Ibadan

    The Federal Government has suspended the 2019 Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) for teachers at the Ibadan CBT centre following alleged unruly behaviour of the candidates.

    Mr Sonny Echono, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, disclosed this in an interview with journalists after monitoring the Computer Based Test (CBT) process in Abuja on Saturday.

    Echono announced the suspension of the PQE CBT centre at the University of Ibadan (UI) following what he described as unruly behaviour of the candidates.

    NAN reports that the PQE was introduced in 2017 for teachers and only those who passed the written examination were certified qualified to teach in the country.

    He commended the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) for organising what he described as “transparent exams process” in 47 CBT centres across country.

    “More than 69,000 candidates are writing the PQE across the 36 states including the FCT under the close supervision of TRCN.

    “From the report from Ibadan, the system has some little lapses that is why the CBT was cancelled and we are working toward looking for another day for the exam to be fixed.

    “There is improvement in the logistics as observed. Candidates images appears on the computer screen which make it difficult for exam malpractice or cheating.

    “It is easy for the exam monitoring officials to confirm that the candidate sitting for the exam is actually the person with the identity,” he said.

    According to him, the Dec. 31 deadline to end quackery in teaching profession in Nigeria still stands.

    The permanent secretary said that the government was working on creating a teachers data base to collate the data of certified and qualified teachers.

    “Anyone not certified or qualified to teach will not have any place in our classroom. We will begin the implementation in January 2020.

    “We have also asked the TRCN to make contingency arrangements for additional diet to accommodate individuals who are just registering to write the PQE, ” Echono added.

    He said that computer literacy was now compulsory for anyone aspiring to be a teacher.

    Also, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, the Registrar of TRCN, said that Africa alone has a deficit of seven million teachers and that Nigeria accounts for the largest number.

    “We need a lot of teachers in our schools. Some states have not recruited teachers in the last 10 year; when you get to some schools you will find only four teachers in the entire school.”

    On the suspension of the PQE process in Ibadan, the Registrar stated “the UI centre is the only Computer Based Test centre for the PQE that we got unpleasant report.

    “Teachers became unruly , a large number of them besieged the CBT hall and wanted to write their exams all at once. So we had to discontinue the exam until further notice.”

    Those who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) all commended the processes but called for more centers to accommodate the large number of candidates in future examinations.

    NAN reports that Oyo State has the highest number of candidates with 5,145, follow by Lagos State with 5,117, Kaduna 4,616 and 4,214 in the FCT.

    Also, 3,709 candidates registered in Plateau State while Zamfara State has the lowest numbers of candidates with 397 candidates”.
