    Just In: Fire guts popular Ibadan market

    An early morning fire on Wednesday, gutted some section of well-known Alesinloye Market in Ibadan Southwest Local Government Area. The inferno destroyed goods and property, including equipment worth millions of Naira.

    According to reports, the Oyo State Fire Service’ timely intervention aided by firefighting teams from SUMAL and SWEETCO, helped prevent the blaze from spreading further.

    A source also that the impact of the fire could have been minimized if a fire station had been situated within the market.

    The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident stated that firefighters were still on the ground battling the flames.

    According to him: “Men are currently working at Aleshinloye market. We thank the management of SWEETCO for releasing their truck and men. Very massive.

    “We are grateful to Sumal for releasing their crew to the scene, we are eternally grateful to them and SWEETCO.

    “The management cannot respond to individuals’ questions now due to logistics.”

    Two persons have been confirmed dead in a fire incident that occurred early Tuesday at the Orita Challenge outlet of GABSTAB Petrol Station in Ibadan.

    In a statement released by the General Manager, Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Mr Yemi Akinyinka, a petrol tanker driver and his motor boy lost their lives in the incident.

    Akinyinka said the fire service immediately deployed its men to the scene on receiving information about the fire at 5.15 a.m.

    “We got information about the GABSTAB Mega Petrol Station, Orita Challenge, fire incident at 5.15 a.m. and deployed our men immediately.

    “The driver and motor boy were burnt to death,” he said.

    The general manager, however, said the fire had been controlled, and more details about the incident would later be provided.

    Properties worth millions destroyed by fire in Ibadan

    Property worth millions of Naira were destroyed on Sunday in Ibadan during a fire incident which ravaged a one-storey building with 10 rooms and three shops.

    The inferno destroyed household goods worth millions of Naira, while equipment in the shops were also completely ruined.

    It was gathered that the incident, which occurred behind a well-known furniture company along Liberty Road, happened when most occupants had left for church.

    A hair-dressing salon, a fashion designer’s shop and a foodstuff seller’s shop were also affected, with equipment and consumables worth millions of Naira destroyed.

    One of the residents, Miss Abosede Koleoso, who works at a filling station, told NAN she received a distress call at work alerting her to the fire outbreak.

    She narrated: “I was at work as an attendant at a filling station when I received a call that our house was on fire.

    “By the time I rushed home, the entire building was engulfed, destroying all rooms and occupants’ properties.

    “I was told the fire started in a sitting room upstairs due to an electrical spark, which could not be contained before spreading downstairs.”

    Another resident, Mr Karim Akande, thanked God that no life was lost.

    Meanwhile, shop owners were seen wailing, even as they declined to comment on the incident.

    Other occupants on the ground floor were seen salvaging their belongings and pushing them into taxis and cars, while others gathered in groups discussing the fire.

    Mr Yemi Akinyinka, General Manager of Oyo State Fire Services Agency, confirmed the fire incident.

    Akinyinka said the incident was reported at 10:34 a.m. via a call from a neighbour stating that a house at No 1, Shoyombo Street, Off Liberty Road, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, was ablaze.

    He said: “Immediately, fire personnel led by ACFS Adedeji were deployed to the scene.

    “On arrival, we found an ancient one-storey residential building engulfed in flames. We acted swiftly and prevented the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

    “The fire was completely extinguished with assistance from fire marshals at a nearby mall.

    “No casualties were recorded. The fire affected the building, but we successfully saved neighbouring structures. The cause was a high voltage surge when power was restored,” Akinyinka said.

    27-yr-old kidnapper bags 60 years imprisonment in Ibadan

    A Federal High Court in Ibadan, on Thursday, sentenced a 27-year-old kidnapper, Umar Babangida, to 60 years imprisonment.

    The convict, found guilty of three charges bordering on kidnapping and cybercrime (ransom demand), each with a 20-year jail term, will, however, run the sentence concurrently.

    Justice N. E. Maha said Babangida was convicted and sentenced based on the evidence tendered against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).

    She said DSS was able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the convict was a kidnapper through his confession in the video clip and other pieces of evidence against him.

    She, however, discharged Babangida of the charges of unlawful possession of firearms and conspiracy for want of evidence.

    “Therefore, Babangida is sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in Agodi for each of counts one, three and five, respectively.

    “Sentencing shall, however, run concurrently,” Maha held.

    The prosecution counsel, Mr T. A. Nurudeen, had earlier told the court that the convict committed the crime on June 14, 15 and 16, 2024, in the Akinyele area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

    Nurudeen said Babangida, a resident of Sabongida area of Jeba, Kwara, along with others, kidnapped two people and immediately initiated ransom negotiations with the victims’ relatives using the victims’ phone numbers.

    The prosecutor said the convict was apprehended after due intelligence report on the kidnapping.

    A Nigerian woman, Cake plug Ibadan has taken to social media to share her story after she survived a gas explosion.

    The baker, in a post via X on Sunday, February 2, 2025, shared new photos of herself recovering from an incident, she disclosed happened a few months,thanking God for her healing. 

    According to her, the incident which occurred in October 2024 nearly left her blind.

    “The one you greatly healed is back to return the glory to you Abba Father. Thank you great healer,” captioned the post.

    Suspected cultists kill man in Ibadan

    The Police in Oyo State have confirmed the killing of a yet-to-be-identified man by suspected cultists in the early hours of Sunday.

    The incident, according to the police, occurred at a popular lounge in Bodija area of Ibadan.

    The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, CSP Adewale Osifeso, in a statement said that the deceased was reportedly chased before he was shot dead.

    Osifeso said that preliminary investigation revealed that the murder was cult-related.

    “The Oyo State Police Command  has commenced immediate inquiry into the Bodija murder incident that occurred during the early hours of Sunday.

    “Preliminary Investigation revealed that a yet-to-be-identified man was chased and shot dead a few blocks away from the popular lounge located in Bodija,Ibadan.

    “Preliminary Investigation revealed that the murder is  cult-related,” he said.

    Osifeso said that police personnel had been deployed in the area to maintain law and order while normalcy had been restored.

    He, however, said that reports circulating on social media that the police accidentally killed an onlooker(student) while trying to disperse people at the scene of the crime was not true.

    Osifeso insisted that nobody was killed during or after the police dispersed onlookers from the crime scene.

    He said that the case had been referred to the Homicidal Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku.

    He said the Police Commissioner in the state, Ayodele Sonubi, had directed a Deputy Commissioner of Police to investigate  the case.

    The singer promised his fans that he would continue the artist’s legacy of producing chart-topping hits while exploring fresh musical directions.

    “Afrobeats can’t be brought up without my name. Impossible,”he said.

    According to the singer, afrobeat cannot be brought with his name, as he  expressed his excitement over the project.

    The singer had continued to prove that his influence in shaping the global afrobeats narrative is unmatched.

    SAD: Woman dead, several injured as truck rams into Ibadan market

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of a woman in an accident involving an articulated truck and a commercial bus at Eleyele Roundabout, Ibadan, on Wednesday.

    The spokesperson, FRSC, Oyo Sector Command, Mr Mayowa Odewo, disclosed that the accident left five other persons, made up of four female adults and a male adult, injured.

    He noted the articulated truck, marked DTN 328 XC, lost control and rammed into a Toyota bus, marked NRK 296 XC, at a nearby motor park in Eleyele market.

    Odewo explained that the injured victims had been taken to a private hospital and the University College Hospital (UCH) for treatment, while the dead body was deposited at a morgue.

    The spokesperson said roadside traders, many of which scampered for safety, had previously been warned about the dangers of transacting their businesses by the roadside.

    “We have been sensitising people on dangers inherent in trading by the roadside before this sad incident, and we will intensify efforts to forestall future occurrence,” he said.

    Ibadan ‘big girls’ remanded in prison for stealing N2.4m perfume

    A Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan, has remanded four young women for alleged theft of several bottles of perfumes valued at N2.4 million.

    The defendants are Oluwabukunmi Adesanya, Eunice Adeniyi, Rukayat Ajibola and Sarah Ajibode. They pleaded not guilty to a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy and theft preferred against them.

    The Court’s President, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, admitted the defendants to N500,000 bail each with two reliable sureties each in like sum.

    He ordered that the sureties must show evidence of three years tax payment  to the Oyo State Government.

    Akintayo, however, ordered that the defendants  be remanded at Agodi Correctional Centre, pending the fulfilment of their bail condition.

    He adjourned the case until Feb. 3, 2025 for hearing.

    Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Insp Ayodele Ayeni, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Dec. 21, at about 12.00 p.m. at Sele Junction, Mokola area of Ibadan.

    According to Ayeni, the defendants stole different types of perfumes valued at N2.4 million.

    He said that the items stolen belonged to one Mrs Fatima Ajibode, the owner of Teemoh shops.

    He said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 516 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol. ii, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria.

    Ibadan stampede: Gov Makinde to honour dead children

    Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State says he will put off his Dec. 25th birthday celebrations in honour of the children who died during Wednesday’s stampede in Ibadan.

    Makinde stated this in Ibadan on Friday while receiving the South-East delegation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by its Board of Trustees (BOT) Chairman, Sen. Adolphus Wabara.

    The delegation came to condole with the governor over the early morning stampede at the children’s carnival at Islamic High School, Basorun, Ibadan.

    Makinde described the incident, which claimed the lives of 35 children, as painful, unfortunate and preventable.

    He said due to the incident; he would have to put off his Dec. 25th birthday celebrations and remain alone indoors.

    “I will not go out; no birthday celebration this year,” he said.

    He appreciated the BOT chairman and other party leaders for the visit, saying they were the first to pay him a condolence visit over the unfortunate incident.

    “On behalf of the government and the people of Oyo State, we appreciate you for coming,” Makinde said.

    Earlier, Wabara said the South-East party leaders were in Ibadan to commiserate with the governor and the people of Oyo State over the loss of lives arising from the stampede.

    “We, the people of South-East, feel the pain of the sudden death of the 35 children.

    “We pray God to grant you and the people of the state, particularly the parents of the victims, the fortitude to bear the loss,” Wabara said.

    A former governor of Ebonyi, Dr Sam Egwu; former PDP National Secretary, Chief Ben Obi, and PDP BOT member, Josephine Anenih, make up the delegation.

    Others are PDP chieftain, Chief Obasi Elebe, and Ebonyi PDP chairman, Mr Onyema Nwele.
