My target is to become Olubadan – Ladoja

High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, the Otun-Olubadan of Ibadanland, on Wednesday in Ibadan said he was not interested in wearing any other crown except the Olubadan crown.

Ladoja told newsmen at his residence after the Eid prayers that it has always been his target to become an Olubadan and was not going to wear any other crown

There had been widespread speculation that the Ibadan high chiefs would be installed as beaded crown-wearing kings from July 7.

Some high chiefs who were crowned during the administration of the late Abiola Ajimobi had surrendered the crowns after an out-of-court settlement.

This was to pave way for Oba Lekan Balogun’s ascension to the Olubadan throne.

However, Ladoja said information at his disposal revealed that the high chiefs were now seeking permission to resume wearing of their surrendered crowns.

Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State, said it was illegal for any Ibadan high chief to think he can resume wearing an already-surrendered beaded crown.

He said there would not have been a new Olubadan of Ibadan by now if the high chiefs had failed to surrender their crowns and withdrew the case in court.

“I joined the Olubadan line on Oct. 1, 1993. I joined as ‘Jagun Olubadan’ and my target was to become Olubadan. I did not expect that I was going to wear any beaded crown on the way.

“If I wanted to do that, I would have become the ‘Baale’ of my village and I will be called ‘Baale’. Our role as high chiefs is to advise and support the Olubadan, not to wear crown with him,” Ladoja said.

The former governor said he as an individual was not interested in any other crown apart from that of Olubadan of Ibadanland, adding “only God chooses kings in Ibadan”.

Ladoja expressed dismay at the fact that some high chiefs want to short-circuit the system, saying such was alien to the Ibadan tradition.

He said that it was not fair or right to have high chiefs as kings, adding there was no need to mend what was not broken.

“I told them the story of Aliiwo. When Aliiwo was coming from Iwo, he passed through Lagun village where he left his followers to stay with other warriors in Ibadan.

“If he had wanted to become Onilagun of Lagun, he would have done so. But people who started Ibadan said that they want to rule themselves. They want to rule the villages from the town,” the Otun-Olubadan said.

The former governor added that he would however not go to court on the matter, saying there was no issue in the agitation of the high chiefs.

Ladoja said that any Ibadan indigene can go to court over such issues since every bonafide Ibadan man is a potential king.

Poly Ibadan debunks trending ritual video

The management of The Polytechnic, Ibadan says the short video of students clad in white and half naked that went viral was not ritual activity as being rumoured.

The Registrar of the institution, Mrs Modupe Fawale, made the clarification in a statement in Ibadan on Saturday.

The trending video circulating on social media showed, where some students in white, were sacrificing and feasting on ritual in broad daylight on the campus.

Fawale, however, explained that the said video was the performance of students from the Art and Design department during their 2023 departmental week.

”The scene on the video is to educate, orientate and discourage the minds of the youth, especially students, not to engage in money ritual and other social vices.

“Not that the act was real within the campus as it has been rumoured.”

She, however, said that the management had called the attention of all students’ associations to the need to register and ensure that their activities are approved by the students affairs who have the mandate to monitor the kind of programmes to be embarked on.

“The students union should also through their platforms sensitize students’ associations and clubs to project the good image of the institution,” Fawale said.

Policeman shot dead while chasing suspected criminals

A police officer attached to Moniya Divisional Police Headquarters in Ibadan, Oyo State was reportedly shot dead by hoodlums while chasing some suspected criminals in Ibadan.

It was gathered that the incident took place at Moniya Motor Park in Akinyele Local Government Area of the State.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, SP Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday in Ibadan.

Osifeso said that the operatives attached to Moniya Area Command, under Oyo State Police Command, while on lawful intelligence-led stop-and-search around a major black spot, were attacked in the line of duty on Monday at about 10.15 a.m.

He said that preliminary investigation showed that the patrol team, while acting on credible intelligence through visible policing duties, extended its presence to some black spots, highways and roads to deter criminal elements from settling and establishing dominance within the area.

Osifeso said that the team, led by one Insp Stanley Ikhine, flagged-down an ash-coloured Lexus 350 SUV, with a faintly inscribed worn-off number plate, thus further arousing suspicion from the officers on watch.

“In the process, the vehicle initially slowed down in compliance with the directive before eventually picking up speed and dashing off to evade the officers on duty.

“This action led to a chase by the officers in a bid to establish further clarity of facts,” he said.

Osifeso said few meters away from the initial stoppage point, the vehicle veered off the road to a nearby garage, driving directly into the waiting hands of hoodlums who were also collaborators in the criminal process.

He stated further that the hoodlums not only obstructed the officers from discharging their duties but also aided the escape of the SUV and its occupants.

“Consequent upon the above, the hoodlums attacked the officers unprovoked and attempted to forcefully drag a rifle from one of them, which led to a shot being discharged from the barrel during the process of the struggle.

“Sadly, the gallant officer paid the supreme price, suffering a heavy blow to his skull, inflicted by one of the hoodlums while preventing them from dispossessing him of his firearm,” he said.

The police spokesman said that the body of the deceased had been deposited at the state morgue for a post-mortem, while seven persons had been arrested and 12 motorcycles impounded in connection with the incident.

  • Adopt friendly policies on pig production for poverty eradication, don urges FG

Adopt friendly policies on pig production for poverty eradication, don urges FG

A don, Prof. Akinyele Adesehinwa, has called on the Federal Government to adopt friendly policies on pig industry toward eradicating poverty and contributing to the attainment of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Adesehinwa made the call on Wednesday at the 370th Inaugural Lecture of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, in collaboration with Institute of Agricultural Research a Training (IAR&T), Ibadan.

The title of the inaugural lecture was: “The Fox and the Piglet: A Paradox for Untapped Resources.”

The event was the first inaugural lecture on Livestock improvement and the eighth from IAR&T.

According to the professor of Animal Science and Production Systems, the pig industry is a means of job creation, a sustainable source of income, and poverty reduction.

He noted that Nigeria had the largest pig farm in the world, located in Kano and established in ’50s and ’60s by United African Company (UAC).

He said that UAC used to transport the meat by rail to Lagos at that time.

“Unfortunately, that pig farm eventually folded up in the late ’70s due to religious prejudice and traditional taboos.

“If this farm had been allowed to continue, Nigeria would probably have become one of the leading pig-producing countries in the whole world,” he stated.

The don called for the cooperation of relevant agencies of government at all levels toward developing a framework for importation, preservation, and use of imported genetic materials to improve the existing stock.

“Appropriate policies should be put in place to favour the establishment of private pig meat processing companies/plants,” he said.

According to him, the pig industry also serves as nutrition and food security arising from pork and its consumable by-products as well as source of organic manure for crop production.

“Therefore, it could be said that Nigeria has all it takes for self-reliance in animal protein, but yet to utilise the opportunities to increase pigs contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“The federal government needs to change from its unfriendly attitude toward the pig production sub-sector and by-product from what we generate from the industry, which is pig meat and its by-product.

“Pig is compared to palm tree, where every part is useful to man; skin for soft leather, hair for brush, fat (lard) for cooking and for cosmetics.

“The blood and bones are also useful for animal feed, intestine for surgical suture material and for sausage casing, heart as organ transplant for humans, manure for maggot production for fish feeding and cooking gas production,” he said.

Adesehinwa stated that the global trend in world meat production (2016-2020) indicated that pig meat (pork) was a very important source of animal protein in human diets.

He noted that investment in pork production had proven to be one of the most profitable livestock businesses because of its relatively low cost of production, compared with other major livestock farming businesses.

According to him, pork is the world’s most widely eaten meat, accounting for 36 per cent of the total meat production, surpassing  poultry (29 per cent), beef and buffalo (27 per cent) and goat and sheep (five per cent).

According to him, pig has the highest percentage in terms of consumption in the entire world.

The don stated further that the world’s pork industry had been on the rise since the 1970s, adding that by 2022, global production had surpassed 110 million metric tonnes per year.

Adesehinwa said that the pork industry included all forms of pig meat, including flesh and processed meats.

“The value of trade in pig products around the world runs into billions of dollars every year.

“However, Africa enjoys less than five per cent of the “economic fat” generated in the pig-farming sector.

“Pig production is so valuable that it is described as an ‘assist for wealth’ or ‘safety net’ in times of crises,” Adesehinwa said.

He noted that China, with a fifth of the world’s population, was both the largest producer and net importer of pig products globally, using pork to feed its largest population.
