  • Your Buhari is more ‘yesterday’s man’ than IBB, Obasanjo – Omokri tackles Tinubu

This is in reaction to Tinubu’s statement after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buharion Tuesday that former military President Ibrahim Babangida and ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo should leave politics and join the club of retirees.

Tinubu stated this in reaction to the former presidents’ earlier advice that Buhari should not run in 2019.

Omokri on his twitter page further noted that Buhari was more of a yesterday man than the former presidents.

He wrote “Why does Tinubu still speak from both sides of the mouth at 65?

“Tinubu called Presidents Obasanjo and Babangida ‘yesterday’s men’!

“Has he forgotten how he led APC leaders to beg Obasanjo to help them ‘navigate’ their way to victory in 2015? Who is more ‘yesterday’ than Buhari?‎”

Recall that Tinubu and Chief Bisi Akande, the former interim chairman of the APC, met with President Buhari at the Aso Villa one and a half hours after the President’s meeting with another former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar.

Responding to a question on the statements made by Obasanjo and Babangida, Tinubu said: ”I don’t address those shadows. We should let our former presidents join retirees’ club and take pensions but they can participate in our politics if they are interested.

“It is a free world but this freedom is not served a la carte. They should allow us to move our country forward. It is a challenge to every Nigerian.”

On the chances of the APC in the 2019 elections, the former Lagos State governor said: “You are asking me an obvious question. I belong to this party. My commitment is to this party. We have a better chance and we are strongly determined to prosecute election in a most transparent and democratic manner and we will win.”

2019: Obasanjo, IBB, other ex-presidents belong to retirees club – Tinubu

…Says former leaders should “allow us to move our country forward”

Former Governor of Lagos State and national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former military president Gen. Ibrahim Babangida belong to the retires club.

The APC leader also enjoined the former Nigerian leaders to allow the present crop of politicians to move Nigeria forward.

Tinubu was reacting to open letters written by Obasanjo Babangida to President Muhammadu Buhari on his performance and why he (Buhari) should retire in 2019 for a younger president.

It is a free world but this freedom is not served a la carte.

Tinubu, who is the head of a presidential panel to reconcile APC leaders and unite the party, told reporters that he felt “greatly honoured” being offered the job.

.He said: “I feel greatly honoured with the mutual confidence that the President has reposed in me, which is a very strong political challenge. We have started in earnest.

He has given me a free hand to put cohesion, confidence and trust in the party. Democracy is about conflict resolution process. You can’t do it without resolving conflicts.

We can’t build it without understanding the conflicts and sources where we are coming from. But we want to leave the country with a legacy. It’s not about Mr. President. That is what he’s telling the country.

It’s about our country and no other choice to democratic tenets than through political party platforms.”

Tinubu described President Buhai as “one of those rare beings around the country, around Africa who have experienced both worlds: he fought a battle to save Nigeria and came to politics to save Nigeria.

Very rare people have such an opportunity in their life time and that’s what we talk about legacy, and where we have all the challenges, do what we should do. I’m enjoying the challenges so far.”

Gen. Abubakar met with the President immediately after he received letters of Credence from the Ambassador of Niger to Nigeria, Mr Alat Mogaskia; the High Commissioner of Ghana, Alhaji Rashid Bawa and that of Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy Sea to Nigeria, the Most Rev. Archbishop Antonio Guido Filipazzi.

The former Head of State declined to speak to reporters after the meeting, which lasted for less than one hour.

    David Mark

a former Senate President, David Mark, who is Shagaya’s friend, confirmed the death.

He said, “Nigeria has lost one of her finest and fertile minds. I have lost a bosom friend, a pathfinder and a patriot.”

Mark in a statement by his Media Assistant, Paul Mumeh, obtained said Shagaya left a legacy of “uncommon commitment to the ideals of nationhood.”

    Arewa Consultative Forum [ACF]

The ACF, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Muhammad Biu, said the late Shagaya would be remembered for his selfless service to his fatherland.

“Nigeria has lost one of its fineness politician, a bridge builder and a leader who lived a simple and humble life.

“General Shagaya until his death had been an ardent supporter of the unity of Nigeria as a nation and a peace builder irrespective of ethnicism, tribalism and religious bigotry,” Mr. Babangida said.

While providing details of his death, a former Chairman, Langtang North Local Government Area, Dan Dandur, said Shagaya died in a road accident along Langtang-Pankshin road in Plateau State.

“Shagaya died in a road crash today; we are right now with the corpse at the Air Force Military Hospital, Jos,” Dandur told the News Agency of Nigeria, in a telephone interview.

Dandur said that the 75-year-old retired army general was on his way to Jos from his village in Langtang, when the accident occurred at Amper in Kanke Local Government of the State.

“Shagaya was traveling along with his driver and orderly when the accident occurred, but the two survived with serious injuries and are receiving treatment at the hospital,” he said.

Dandur described Shagaya’s death as “shocking and unbelievable”.

“His death is too sudden. I just can’t believe that he has left us,” Dandur, who holds the traditional title of “Baraya Langtang”, told NAN.

  • 2019: Obasanjo, IBB morally deficient to provide roadmap for Nigeria – Keyamo

Festus Keyamo, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, has lashed out at former Presidents, Ibrahim Babangida and Olusegun Obasanjo for advising President Muhammadu Buhari not to seek reelection in 2019.

In a series of tweets via his verified Twitter handle, the Senior lawyer described both Babangida and Obasanjo as “expired leaders.”

Keyamo said expired leaders who tried all they could to extend their stay in office until they were chased out, should not advise Buhari.

He wrote: “Ironically, these expired leaders, IBB & OBJ, used all the tricks in the books to illegally extend their tenures in office until they were chased away by Nigerians, yet they’re the ones now advising Buhari to give up his LEGAL RIGHT to seek re-election.

It’s hypocrisy at its best. “The message we can take from d letters of OBJ & IBB is the urgent need for government to address problems plaguing Nigeria. But the message we must reject with the messengers is their roadmap on the way forward.

They’re too morally deficient to provide any political compass for this nation again.” Obasanjo had advised Buhari against seeking re-election in the upcoming 2019 election due to the failure of the government.

Similarly, Babangida had last week asked Nigerians to vote Buhari out of office, come 2019. IBB, however, enjoined Nigerians to co-operate with Buhari until his tenure ends.

  • JUST IN: IBB’s aide, Afegbua reports to Force headquarters, says ‘I’m not a fugitive’

    …Withdraws suits against Channels, NTA

Kassim Afegbua, the Spokesman to the former military President, Ibrahim Babangida on Wednesday turned himself in at the Force headquarters in Abuja.

Afegbua arrived the police headquarters at 10:32 a.m. in the company of his wife, lawyer, Kayode Ajulo and friends.

Recall that the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, had on Monday ordered Afegbua’s arrest over a statement he issued on behalf of Babangida, urging President Muhammadu Buhari not to seek re-election in 2019.

The ex- President’s media aide said when he was declared wanted by the police, Babangida called him and asked if he was a criminal.

When asked if he was in touch with his boss, Afegbua, who addressed journalists before entering the police headquarters, said: “It will even interest you to know that when I was declared wanted on Channels TV and Nigerian Television Authority, (NTA), my boss; IBB was the one who called me and said ‘why are they declaring you wanted? Are you a criminal? and we laughed over it.

“He also asked if I was on the run and if I have been given invitation and he said, okay that is interesting. My boss said he heard on the news that they talked about defamation of character and he asked whose character have you defamed?

“So I am very much in touch with him and I am not doing anything out of the blues. He is a man I have been with for the past 14 years as spokesman. Even when I went to serve in my state, I was still very much in touch with him. I have said it before that I am part and parcel of him, we are family and so I don’t have any cause to worry over anything.

“I am only here personally because I was declared wanted. I am not on the run, I am not a fugitive to the law and as a responsible Nigerian, I feel it was unwise on the part of the police to declare me wanted when I have not been formally invited. So I am here to present myself. I am here with my wife, other family members and my lawyer.”

On the insinuation that the second statement was sent by a family member, he added: “If the former President has spoken to Thisday Newspaper to confirm the veracity of the statement I issued on his behalf, the other letter wouldn’t be an issue because essentially, that statement as far as I am concerned did not speak for IBB and Gen. Babangida by the special grace of God was former President and his title is GCFR and not GCON. So to me, the purported rebuttal is unnecessary.”

” It is understandable why I will have to extract my own commitment by way of asking the law court to enforce my right because I have a right under the constitution of Nigeria, 1999 as amended to freedom of association, freedom of speech and dignity and even if anything warrants one being declared wanted, it shouldn’t be in that manner.”

On the withdrawal of the suit against Channels and NTA, he said: “It is because I am a media person. There is no complicity, I have withdrawn that of NTA and Channels TV this morning (Wednesday) at the Federal High Court.

“So, I am suing the IGP and the police for infringing on my rights, demeaning my person and maligning my reputation.”

When asked if he would withdraw the suit if the police apologizes, he stated: “That is secondary. When we get there, we will know.”

Shortly after Afegbua made his way into the building, journalists who were there to cover his arrival were asked to vacate the Force headquarters because the event was not organised by the police.

  • PDP condemns moves by police to arrest IBB’s media adviser

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned moves by the Police to arrest Mr Kassim Afegbua, Media Adviser to former military President, Ibrahim Babangida, over a statement issued on Sunday.

The party made the condemnation in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, on Tuesday in Abuja.

Afegbua had in the state on behalf of Babangida stressed the need for Nigerians to cooperate with Buhari to complete his term of office on May 29, 2019.

The statement which was later denied by Babangida, also stated the need to collectively prepare the way for new generation leaders to assume the mantle of leadership of the country.

But, the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has reportedly declared Afegbua wanted over the statement.

The PDP cautioned the police and other security agencies not to allow them to be used as instruments of persecution against Nigerians perceived to be unsupportive of re-election bid of Buhari.

It described the reported arrest moves as a ploy to set the table for a “vicious muzzling of constitutionally-guaranteed free speech and right to opinion of citizens in the country.

It said that the recent events, including unwarranted harassment of perceived opponents of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition members were indications that APC was jittery ahead of 2019 general elections.

The party said that the trend was a dangerous threat to the nation’s democracy.

“We now have a terrifying situation where people are harassed for daring to aspire for certain elective offices or even express opinion regarding governance in the country.

“Nigerians and the international community have seen that almost all those who have openly expressed or perceived to be nursing ambition for certain offices, including presidency, are now facing one trumped-up charge or another.

“This is ostensibly meant to cow and discredit them,’’ it said.

It stated that no amount of threats, intimidation and persecution with state apparatus of power could subjugate or make Nigerians change their determined resolve to vote out APC and its candidates in 2019.

  • BREAKING: IBB’s spokesman, Kassim Afegbua sues police, media houses for N1bn

BREAKING: IBB’s spokesman, Kassim Afegbua sues police, media houses for N1bn

Sequel to being declared wanted by the police, Kassim Afegbua, media adviser to former military president, Ibrahim Babangida on Tuesday sued for fundamental rights enforcement.

Afegbua is also requesting N1 billion in damages from the police, its spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, and two media houses.

The spokesman’s legal representative, Kayode Ajulo, filed the suit at the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court Tuesday afternoon.

The reliefs sought include an immediate end to the alleged harassment being meted against him by the police.

Ajulo joined the National Television Authority and Channels Television in the lawsuit for airing claims that Mr. Afegbua was a wanted man.

Recall that Afegbua released a statement on Sunday in which Babangida complained about President Muhammadu Buhari’s shortcomings and advised Nigerians on the path to the future.

Hours after the statement was released, a counter press release emerged that purportedly had Mr. Babangida’s approval.

However, Babangida later said he authorised the statement distributed by his spokesman while insisting that the second statement emanated from his friends and should be discarded.

  • SERAP condemns harassment of IBB’s spokesperson, Kassim Afegbua

SERAP condemns harassment of IBB’s spokesperson, Kassim Afegbua

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has “strongly condemned the intimidation and harassment by the police of Kassim Afegbua, spokesman of General Ibrahim Babangida over a statement he issued on behalf of the former military president.”

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris last night declared Afegbua wanted over the statement he issued on Sunday. Idris ordered the arrest of Afegbua for “making false statements, defamation of character, and for an act capable of instigating public disturbance.”

But SERAP in a statement today by its deputy director Timothy Adewale said, “Everyone has the right to speak out about political or other public interest issues. To do so cannot qualify as ‘making false statements’. And it’s certainly not ‘defamation of character’ let alone rising to ‘an act capable of instigating public disturbance.’ It is the essence of democracy and human rights. Declaring Afegbua wanted is unwarranted because there is no evidence of inciting violence against him.”

According to SERAP, “Afegbua’s statement doesn’t contain incitement to violence. Declaring him wanted simply for exercising his right to freedom of expression is the hallmark of an oppressive government. The police should immediately withdraw its unlawful declaration and end the harassment of Afegbua. President Muhammadu Buhari should publicly instruct the police authorities that it’s their duty to facilitate people’s enjoyment of their freedoms, not to hinder them.”

The statement read in part: “Afegbua’s statement is within reasonable limits, and entirely within his constitutional right to freedom of expression. The allegation that he instigated public disturbance is to say the least, bizarre. Expressing one’s opinion is at the heart of freedom of expression, not sedition. At any rate, Babangida is not known to have lodged any complaint to the police on the matter. He reportedly confirmed Afegbua’s statement. Even if Babangida had issues with Afegbua’s statement, it’s not the police’s business to take upon itself Babangida’s perceived cause of action.”

“This government is striving to promote Nigeria as a free society and a good place to do business, but people in a country that calls itself a democracy shouldn’t be afraid to speak out about political issues. This kind of action by the police can stifle debate on matters of public interest in Nigeria and have broader chilling effect on free speech.”

“People may hold and express strong political views. These may sound offensive, but such expressions should not be branded as criminal simply because they involve critical views about the government and authority.”

“Indeed, the UN Human Rights Committee established pursuant to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to which Nigeria is a state party has emphasized that the value placed by the Covenant upon uninhibited expression is particularly high. All public figures, including those exercising the highest political authority, are legitimately subject to criticism and political opposition. It is absolutely necessary in a free society that restrictions on public debate or discourse are not implemented at the detriment of human rights, such as freedom of expression.”

It would be recalled that the statement which Afegbua issued on behalf of Babangida detailed the alleged failings of Buhari and called for the emergence of a younger, vibrant leader that could tackle the country’s 21st-century challenges headlong. But few hours after the first statement was released, another one reportedly signed by Babangida was made public. The statement denied the critical issues raised in the first one. However, Afegbua insisted that Babanginda authorised the statement he issued. Babangida also reportedly confirmed to THISDAY that the statement which Afegbua signed on his behalf still stands.

  • IGP orders arrest of IBB spokesman, Afegbua over controversial statement

The Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris has ordered the arrest of the spokesman of former Military President Ibrahim Babangida should he fail to turn himself up within 24 hours.

Afegua is wanted for ” issuing a fake statement.”

Recall that Afegbua had on Sunday released a statement quoting the former military ruler as saying President Muhammadu Buhari should not seek reelection.

But the former president denied it and issued another one which he personally signed.

However, Afegbua insisted on the one he issued as the authentic.

A government source, who does not want his name in print, confirmed that the IGP had ordered Afegbua’s arrest within24 hours.

  • BREAKING NEWS: IBB denies asking Buhari not to recontest

A new letter has surfaced in which former military president, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida [IBB], denied a report making the rounds that he advised incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari not to re-contest in 2019 for a second term in office.

Recall that TheNewsGuru.com had earlier published the report in which IBB asked Buhari to complete his first term and allow a new generation of leaders to take control of the affairs of the nation.

    Below is the new letter:

My attention has been drawn to a report making rounds especially online in which I was quoted as advising Nigerians not to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari in the coming 2019 election.

Not only is the said statement untrue, it is in its entirety, an inaccurate representation of my view of the state of our dear Nation.

As a former President and an elder statesman, I have existing communication channels through which I reach out to President Muhammadu Buhari on topical issues of national importance, should there be the need so to do.

The media, both online or mainstream and indeed the unsuspecting public are advised to disregard such false reports.

Thank you and God Bless you all.
