Stop insulting Ibori with speculations of defection

    By Fred Edoreh.

It needs no telling that Chief James Onanefe Ibori, former Governor of Delta State, is the father of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Delta State. Everyone knows that.

At the PDP Ethiope East LGA rally in Oghara, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa reaffirmed that “Ibori is our leader, that is not in contest, and Oghara is home to PDP.”

It therefore amounts to an insult on the Odidigborigbo himself for some persons to be peddling speculations that he might be scheming to defect to the APC in anger over the non-emergence of his speculatively preferred candidate as the flag bearer of the PDP for the Governorship of Delta State.

Ibori cannot condescend to bitterness over the choice of a State Governorship candidate. He is far far above that. Everybody knows that he had been instrumental, both by financing and mobilisation, in the election of two Nigeria Presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo, and Umaru Yar’Adua.

Yes, as any politician and leader, he is bound to nurse a preference among aspirants but he is well known for his respect and promotion of the principles of democracy.

At the mega rally in Asaba early in 2022, he expressed satisfaction in the openness of the process leading to the State primaries as it guaranteed the accommodation of all interests to aspire but he also knew that the mantle would go to any of the aspirants.

If there was anything unexpected about the primaries, it was the confusion that trailed the amendment of the electoral act by which many statutory delegates were disenfranchised and Ibori knows well that that was neither the making of the leadership of Delta State PDP nor Governor Okowa nor the party as a whole but of a very confused and incompetent Senate leadership in which Ovie Omo-Agege was Deputy President.

Most importantly, it should be recalled that in the determination of the zoning of the Governorship position, Ibori clearly supported the DC-23 which pruned the Delta Central/Urhobo aspirants from twelve to five and finally from five to three persons which included Rt. Honourable Sheriff Oborevwori, Olorogun David Edevbie, and Chief Kenneth Gbagi.

At the end of the exercise, the Ighoyota Amori-led Pan-Urhobo political pressure group informed that they had no particular preference among the three persons, that they had confidence in any of them as eminently qualified and competent to provide good governance and development to the State, and that party members and supporters should feel free to stand behind any of them.

It is therefore curious for anyone to suggest that as the father of the party and backbone of DC-23, Ibori would be bitter in any way such as to reject the outcome of such a rigorous process.

Again, Ibori brought many of our present leaders into Government and fathered them into the State and National political limelight. It was so for Edevbie and Oborevwori. While he brought Edevbie from overseas in 1999 to become Commissioner of Finance and Economic Planning, he brought Oborevwori in 2003 as Special Assistant on Youth Development after which Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan took him on as Special Adviser on Land Security before he contested election into the House of Assembly and was eventually elected and re-elected Speaker.

Being the one that routed him into State Government and politics, I am sure Ibori is as proud of Sheriff as he would be of others who have also grown in their different areas.

As a leader, he stood for the rotation of the Governorship and other positions in the State and, despite some hard stance from some quarters, he ensured that the Governorship moved from Delta Central to South at the completion of his tenure and to North at the completion of Uduaghan’s tenure.

It is also known that, as Governor, he was instrumental to the emergence of Uduaghan and he also knows that he will not perpetually be the only one to choose successive Governors for the State. That is like comparing Ibori’s giant status with the diminutive likes of Adams Oshiomhole.

Indeed, it is also well known that, being a very self-respecting and self-restraining person, he is the most unlikely to be counted among Nigerian former Governors who conduct themselves with high-handed interference with the administration of their successors. At least, neither Governors Uduaghan nor Okowa has expressed any such difficulty with him. They all love and respect one another.

Some persons have pointed to his absence at the Ethiope East rally as an indication of his grievance with Okowa and the party, but how do you expect Chief Ibori to anchor a Ward or Local Government rally? That would mean that he has not raised men to take care of primary matters. On the contrary, he has raised leaders and the PDP in the State has grown to be able to take care of small matters.

For those who are in delusion about any deal between Ibori and Omo-Agege, let it be known that Ibori knows a former Secretary to State Government who supplied documents to frame him into the travail he suffered. While we know that the former Secretary to State Government did it in his usual mischievously selfish interest, we know that those who chased Ibori, who also chased Diepreye Alamiesegha to death, did so in anger over their defence for the good of the Niger Delta.

But while Ibori is known to be open-minded and easily forgiving, it is delusive to imagine that he is as ignorant to want to gratify the Judas who sold him with defection to his party and support for his clearly bloated and glaringly lost Governorship ambition.

Delta 2023: Ibori’s political ally, Amori says Ex-Gov is fully in support of Oborevwori

Leader of the DC-23 Group and the Delta Central Senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Ighoyota Amori, former Governor James Ibori’s right hand man has assured that the pillar of Delta politics is fully in support of Sheriff Oborevwori in the 2023 gubernatorial election.

Amori made the disclosure in Kokori, Ethiope East on Thursday afternoon when the State PDP train stormed the community in continuation of its ward-to-ward campaign.

“I want to assure all Deltans that our leader, Chief James Onanefe Ibori is supporting Oborevwori to emerge as Governor of Delta State.

“We are his men and we can tell you. He brought all of us, including the Speaker into government and it is his joy to support each and every one of us. PDP is his party and he is not contemplating and cannot contemplate any other option.”

Amori who led the struggle for the sustenance of the rotation system to Delta Central was a top functionary of the State Government in Chief Ibori’s administration and is known as one of the closest followers.

His assertion puts to rest the speculations in the opposition party that Ibori might move to support the APC in anger over the loss of the PDP ticket by his reportedly preferred candidate.

The campaign train visit which commenced at Egbo/Samagidi (Ward 10) and proceeded to Kokori, Isiokolo, Orhoakpo, and Okpara Inland witnessed a huge celebratory welcome of Sheriff Oborevwori by the people who said they believe in his closeness to the people at the grassroots, his personal humility and capacity to deliver when elected Governor.

Speaking to the people at Kokori, Oborevwori pointed out that while the Okowa administration has benefitted Ethiope East communities greatly in terms of roads and other physical and social infrastructure, empowerment, and appointments, his administration will do even more for the people.

“You all can see that the only infrastructures and development you enjoy were brought to you by the State Government. You have no Federal presence to show. The Eku-Abraka-Agbor road which serves your area is a Federal road but the APC government has refused to repair it. It is the same thing with the Benin-Warri Expressway. It is also a Federal road and they have disregarded repairing it, yet we have somebody in Abuja who should speak for his people but failed to do so. Deltans do not want that kind of person.

The same APC government has only brought hardship to our people. That is why we are urging you to vote for the PDP, five-over-five.

“With the PDP at the Federal level and the State, we can be certain that 30% of the burden of development will be listed off the State. We will have more people at the centre also to attract development into the State. Okowa is an intelligent man and he will support Atiku greatly to achieve results.

“When you also vote for me as Governor, you can be sure of more development projects as well as empowerment for job and wealth creation.”

“I urge you also to vote for Chief Ighoyota Amori for Senate, Erhiatake Ibori for House of Reps, and Arthur Akpowhowo for House of Assembly.”

Prince Emeka Obasi, an outstanding journalist – Ibori

Chief James Onanefe Ibori, the former Delta State Governor has described the death of Prince Emeka Obasi who died Tuesday 15th March as a great loss to the nation.

He said that Emeka Obasi was not only a journalist but a man of many parts; an excellent and fearless reporter and uncommon essayist who spiced his columns with little known facts, histrionics and captivating drama. He had a knack for facts, names, dates and figures, which made his writings very educating.

Ibori said that Nigerian journalists should have much to emulate in Obasi’s life as he combined his journalism with the business aspect of being a publisher, founding at least two enduring newspaper houses as well as other businesses on the side lines.

Ibori said that Emeka Obasi had candor, confidence, fearlessness andpanache. He said that Nigerian journalism will greatly miss him as the vacuum his death has caused will be difficult to fill. As Ibori consoled his family, he prayed that God would grant his soul eternal rest.

  • Ibori, The Political Phenomenon At 63, By Dan Amor

Ibori, The Political Phenomenon At 63, By Dan Amor

    By DAN AMOR

NOTHING seems more characteristic of the present age than the homogeneity of its point of view. We may frown at its developmental smugness but we must admire its optimism, its intellectual refinements, its spirit of true enlightenment, and the critical engagement with which it examines the world and its leaders. For, it is always instructive for the serious student of history to start by trying to determine what an age thought about itself. Such an investigation is made the easier by studying the lives and times of the important men and women that shaped the age. In documenting the life and times of a towering personality, exciting experiences are selected, which present emotional and spiritual values, to interpret the tale as it is rehearsed in imagination or told to an admiring listener.

As a faithful servant, a dedicated realist and reformer who can bridge all gulfs, level all mountains and put a lamp in every tunnel, as exemplified by his selfless stewardship and devotion to the people of Delta State between 1999 and 2007, Chief James Onanefe Ibori has undoubtedly come to be seen as a modern day phenomenon whose corpus requires a large canvas. Indeed, we cannot conceive a more perfect mode of drawing a sketch about his life in their order, but by placing side by side, what he has done and what people have said about him as an individual and as a leader. It is imperative that we document how people see him as he gradually advances through several stages of his political career and assignments.

How the handsome and brilliant Oghara-born economist/statistician ascended the totem pole of Delta State politics hitherto occupied by the wealthy Ibrus remains a mystery till date. But there is no doubt that brains and looks appear to be the unassailable clinchers these days as far as elections are concerned. In fact, the developed world, in their wisdom discovered this mystery at the dusk of the twentieth century. In the United States of America, brains and looks did earn the Democratic Party a rare two-term spell under the youthful personage of the ever voluble, hand-pumping and telegenic Oxford-trained lawyer, Bill Clinton. Even in Great Britain, the electorate, in 1997, demonstrated a certain unabashed bias for yuppie, dapper looks, with all the histrionic gestures and dramatic turns of phrases that were thrown into the bargain, when they elected Tony Blair of the New Labour, then 43, as Prime Minister. He was the youngest in 187 years.

Consequently, the dourness of the British political landscape had been dramatically but pleasurably transformed. To be candid, Blair did not only puncture, but also destroyed the veneer of cerebral vacuity and humourlessness which his predecessor, John Major had unrepentantly imposed on the British public all through his dull and trepidated reign. The all-rounded cerebral assiduity and political dazzles of Bill Clinton on the American political scene during his two-term reign is well known to all and sundry. Indeed, Barrack Obama demonstrated no less astuteness and sagacity as the immediate past President of the United States. In fact, in virtually all the advanced democracies of the world, the mantle of political leadership has been placed in the hands of members of the younger generation.

Coming from the effeteness of a polity cast rather in fossilized mould, it was almost certain that, Ibori who was referred to as a Lagos boy, would not understand the murky terrain of Delta State politics. But the wily young man won a landslide beating all the notables to their game and clinched the diadem and at 40, he was sworn in as one of the youngest governors in Nigeria in his time. He worked his way tenaciously and conscientiously around his mission and salvaged his people from the stranglehold of marginalization and poverty.

A fighter for the total emancipation of the people of the oil-rich Niger Delta, Ibori it was, who, in 2001, hosted the first ever all Niger Delta politicians summit at Unity House, Asaba, attended by all South South governors, National Assembly members, State Assembly members, professionals and political gladiators. It was at this meeting that the flutes and canons were oiled for the fight for resource control and true federalism in Nigeria. This earned him the sobriquet, “Mr. Resource Control.”

In this short and perceptive tribute, I wouldn’t want to dabble into the eclectic contours of Ibori’s composite political wizardry as an ineluctable rendering of the whole gamut of his phenomenon as a gadfly. One thing you can’t take away from him is that Ibori is a detribalised Nigerian. But in point of fact, a man who eviscerated the socio-political and economic landscape of Delta State with giant strides, who built monuments like stadia in all the local government areas to curb youth restiveness, higher institutions in all the zones to eradicate ignorance, state of the art bridges, roads, electricity and water across the three senatorial districts without prejudice deserves to be celebrated by his people.

Chief James Ibori is not only a news maker. His name alone, generates news. The social media was last month of July inundated with a video that a sitting senator of the Federal Republic was on blended knees before Ibori. Due to desperation for alliterative headlines, even traditional media went to town with the story because Ibori was involved. Little did they care any hoot that the senator did not go alone. Little did they also care any hoot to know that according to Urhobo tradition, you cannot stand up when you are being prayed for by your elders no matter your status in society. But here was Ibori praying for his people who went to visit him in his house. Many also did not know that the said senator was commissioner in Ibori’s cabinet as Executive Governor of Delta State. Yet, they went sensational because Ibori was involved. Even though somebody was to kneel down before Ibori, why is it anybody’s headache?

In fact, Ibori is the father of modern Delta State. Anyone who ever knew the state of things in Delta State after several years of inter-tribal wars when development was kept on hold before the emergence of Ibori as the second executive governor since its creation on August 27, 1991 by the Ibrahim Babangida military regime would have no choice but to thank God for Ibori. Warri the commercial nerve centre had degenerated into a wen whereas Asaba its capital city was like a glorified farm settlement when Ibori became governor in 1999. Today, the story has changed.

Ibori constructed the monumental Bomadi Bridge, one of the longest bridges in Nigeria which for the first time made it possible for Delta Ijaw to now drive cars into their hinterland. That bridge has changed the story of the Ijaw from that part of Nigeria. In fact, on the day it was commissioned, then President Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibori’s fiercest political enemy, apart from Atiku Abubakar and Orji Uzor Kalu, burst into Christian songs and demanded to see those who lied to him that Ibori did not do anything in Delta State. He started the spade work for the Asaba Airport which was completed by his successor, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan.

Chief Ibori represents many things to many people. His middle name, Onanefe, in Urhobo literally translates to: “this child is greater than wealth.” To the down-trodden, he is the caregiver. To the restive youths and agitators in the creeks of the Niger Delta, Ibori is the emancipator. To the average politician in Delta State vis-a-vis the Niger Delta, he is the game-changer. To the students, he is their helper. To the ghetto-dwellers and scums of the Niger Delta, Ibori is the bridge-builder. To journalists and media workers, he is the benevolent publisher. To his good people of Oghara, Ibori is their liberator and benefactor who extricated them from abject poverty and underdevelopment. And to the entire people of Delta State, Ibori is the detribalised development agent whose achievements are insurmountable.

Vociferous, sagacious, effulgent and brilliant, his guts on the issue of a fair deal for the Niger Delta, the goose that lays the golden egg dwarf all superlatives. Ogidigbodigbo 1 of Africa, with the most awesome political machinery in Delta State, as you celebrate the remarkable age of sixty-three today (Wednesday August 4, 2021) on this sinful earth and in a country where politicians have it as a hobby to plot for the fall of their opponents, here is yours sincerely joining your family, friends and associates to thank God for your life. Happy 63 birthday anniversary, Your Excellency.

  • Desperate attempts to pitch me against ex-Govs Ibori, Uduaghan will fail – Gov Okowa

Desperate attempts to pitch me against ex-Govs Ibori, Uduaghan will fail – Gov Okowa

Delta State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa on Friday said he would not be distracted by attempts by some of his party men to pitch him against his predecessors.

He spoke in Asaba while receiving defectors from the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC).

He said attempts by some persons in the state to put him on a collision course with past leaders of the state would not work.

He remarked that PDP as a political party believes that power belongs to God and that the people reserved the right to make their choices.

“We are a party that believes that power belongs to God and that’s why we are rejoicing.

“We also believe that power belongs to the people and that the people reserve the right to make their choice.

“Some time ago, I said that power belongs to God and that only God will determine who will succeed me. I wonder why some people are angry about that statement because truly, only God knows who will take over from me.

“We are one family in the PDP and those who don’t have our character are angry because we always say the truth and they are trying all means to scatter our PDP family, but they will always fail because we have bonded very well together as a party.

Together as a family, we can continue to make things happen; together as a family we change things in our family by working hard for everyone.

“We will not work to put money in one person’s pocket, because a day will come when I will expose those of them that are angry with us,’’ the governor said.

According to him, “you voted for me to do what is right for the interest of the people and not to put money in somebody’s pocket; that’s not what you voted me for.”

Okowa added that PDP had worked very well in the state, “beginning from Chief James Ibori’s tenure to Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan and myself; we have worked very well and we are still working.

“If anyone says he is not seeing what we are doing, it’s either that they are blind or they don’t live in Asaba.

“Their attempt to pitch me against my predecessors will not work because I am not quarrelling with them. My predecessors laid the foundation for what we are doing in the state and I am building on the foundations they have laid.

“I am building on the foundation that I met. Some people are angry and want to cause quarrel between me and my predecessors but they have failed because no stranger will deceive us in this state.’’

He commended the people for their support over the years, adding that the coming of the defectors from APC would further strengthen the PDP in the state.

“I congratulate all of you returning home today; by the grace of God, the people will be happy with us by the time we will be handing over in 2023,” he stated.

Chairman of PDP in the State, Kingsley Esiso, described APC as a failed party.

“Under their leadership of this nation, bandits have taken over, prices of food have skyrocketed, farmers can’t go to farm and children can’t go to school because of insecurity.

“They are dreaming and can’t see Delta. They can plan, they can gather, but they will scatter because God is with us.

“The party under my leadership will not tolerate any irritants. We will chase them till they meet their end politically.

“As a party, we take decisions in the best interest of the party and I want to reiterate that Senator Peter Nwaoboshi stands suspended and he must decide where he belongs; he has one month to do so or we will be forced to do the needful,” Esiso stated

Malami denies receiving N2bn from recovered loots

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN has denied allegation that N2billion was paid to his office from the recovered looted funds.

Malami challenged any person who has any evidence of such payments to either him or his office should come out publicly with proofs.

The AGF, in a statement on Thursday by his media aide, Dr. Umar Gwandu, said all looted funds so far recovered have been applied in accordance with the agreements reached with nations from which the funds are retrieved.

Gwandu quoted Malami as stating that prior to the repatriation of all the recovered assets, Nigeria and relevant nations signed memorandum of understanding as to what the monies will be put to and the government has been working in compliance with all the provisions of multi-national agreements reached.

“It was on the basis of the application of the said funds in line with the agreements that Nigeria earns reputation among international committee of nations which translated into further recoveries.”

He said the Federal Government has a designated account at the Central Bank of Nigeria for all recovered assets.

Gwandu said Malami has neither, as a person, nor as the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, not in any way received any funds from the recovered assets.

We’re in talks with FG over Ibori loot recovery– Delta

The Delta State Government stated on Tuesday that it was engaging the Federal Government in a discussion on the €4.2m loot recovered from the former governor of the state, James Ibori.

Speaking during what appeared to be his last briefing with newsmen in Asaba as the state Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, expressed confidence that the Federal Government would return the recovered funds to Delta.

Aniagwu said those bringing the fund back knew its source.

He said, “Delta State Government has been discussing with the Federal Government on the issue of returning the fund and we know that the Federal Government will do the needful by returning the state’s money.

“We have gone far and we are looking forward to receiving the fund. We have continued to engage the FG, who has been a good father.”

Earlier, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, confirmed that the Federal Government had received €4,214,017.66 of the loot associated with James Ibori.

The minister’s Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Dr Jibrilu Gwandu, revealed this in statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

The statement was titled ‘Nigeria receives €4.2m Ibori loot – Malami’.

According to Malami, the money has been credited to the designated Federal Government account with its naira equivalent as of May 10, 2021.

“The development, according to Malami, was a demonstration of the recognition of the reputation Nigeria earns through records of management of recovered stolen funds in the execution of public-oriented projects,” the statement read.
