Idris stated this in Abuja at the 60th Anniversary celebration of the National Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), with theme “Public Relations; Value Re-Orientation and Economic Transformation”.

I have the blessing and approval of my principal, President Bola Tinubu, who appointed me, to say it as it is, but in a palatable manner.

“He directed that trust must be returned to public communication.

“That is the only way people or citizens will respect and always want to listen to the government.

“We will keep doing that till the end of my job here,” Idris said.

According to the Minister, it is better to always tell the people the truth and for them to also recognise that you are telling them the truth.

“Trust and honesty must be restored in public communication.

“That is why, if I don’t have information about something, I will rather keep my mouth shut, than to reproduce ignorance,” he stressed.

The immediate past Vice President of Republic of Liberia, Dr Jewel Taylor in her Keynote address narrated her journey through stigma, criticism and ability to change the narrative and people’s negative perception of her.

Taylor commended NIPR, adding that the life of politicians revolve around crisis management, and therefore public relations remains an effective tool to address the challenges.

She added that public relations has been an activity in the Africa society, even before the coming of the colonial masters where drums of different categories were used to communicate to the people.

Welcoming guests at the event, Dr Ike Neliaku, the President and Chairman of Council of NIPR, said, to mark the anniversary celebration, the institute planted 60 trees in each of the 36 states of the federation to address climate change.

According to Neliaku, public relations is very important for value re-orientation and economic transformation.

He emphasised the Institute’s commitment to creating a positive narrative for Nigeria.

Also speaking, the pioneer chairman of NIPR, Mazi Okereke said the cause of some crises in the country was breakdown of communication between the government and the governed.

“Nigerian Government needs to put public relations on the driving seat. We are delighted that one of us is now Minister of Information and National Orientation”.

In his goodwill message, the Chief Executive Officer of Ben TV from the UK, Mr Alistair Soyode called on NIPR to set up its branches in other countries to take care of Nigerians and Africans in the diaspora.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the event attracted stakeholders from home and abroad while a panel of notable figures discussed the topic, “leveraging public relations for economic growth”.

Alleged N109.4bn fraud: EFCC never made any promises to ex-AGF, witness tells court

Mr Mahmoud Tukur, an officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) told the FCT High Court that the commission did not promise not to prosecute the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Ahmed Idris.

Tukur made this known on Wednesday while testifying as the second prosecution witness in trial- within- trial to verify the willingness of the statements by Idris (1st defendant).

The trial-within-trial was ordered by the court following the objection raised by counsel for Idris, Chris Uche, SAN, alleging that his client did not make his statements to the EFCC voluntarily.

Idris Ahmed alongside Geoffrey Olusegun Akindele, Mohammed Kudu Usman and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited, are standing trial on a 14-count charge bordering on stealing, fraudulent diversion of public fund to the tune of N109.5 billion.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them.

In his evidence led by the prosecution counsel, Mr Oluwaleke Atolagbe, the witness said Idris’ first statement was voluntarily made on Jan. 22, 2022.

He told the court that the allegations began as a result of a petition written by a group called ‘ Treasury concerned staff .’

He added that the group alleged that Idris abused his office and used the proceeds to acquire property in Kano.

” This statement was at the preliminary stage of the investigation and it was the 1st defendant that approached the Commission himself requesting to be heard on Jan. 22, 2022.

” Although, the team was not ready for such, the Commission however obliged him. We  listened to him and told him whatever he says would be documented.

” Two other operatives were with me. He came to our office without a lawyer.

“By my thinking, coming without a lawyer means he was waiving his rights,” he said.

He told the court that Idris was given administrative bail.

On May 16, 2022, he said Idris was arrested in Kano and brought to Abuja because he refused to respond to messages and calls put across to him by the EFCC.

He added that he came in the company of his security officer, Yusuf Aro and he wrote a statement and was detained.

On May 17, Haruna Isa, a director of legal services from the AGF’s office was present and he wrote his statements.

He said the defendant also wrote statements on May 21 , May 23, 25, 26 and May 31, 2022 in the presence of Odudu Ituen from Paul Erokoro’s chambers.

Being cross examined by defence counsel, Uche, the witness insisted that he never promised not to prosecute the defendant.

According to him, the cautionary words was written by an EFCC officer .

After the cross examination of the witness, the prosecution counsel Atolagbe told the court he had two more witnesses to call.

He however told the court that the witnesses were not available and prayed for an adjournment, Uche did not object to that.

Justice Yusuf Halilu then adjourned until May 15 forthe witnesses to testify.

Represented by the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria, Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, the Minister said, the year 2024 holds a lot of prospects for Nigerians as some of the promising initiatives of the administration begin to bear fruits.

He said 2024 would be a great year for Nigeria as the  policies of President Bola Tinubu under the Renewed Hope Agenda take
firmer roots for the growth of the nation’s economy.

“The Tinubu administration will continue to implement macroeconomic reforms
to achieve broad economic objectives of sustained economic growth.

“The reforms will bring down inflation, ease the cost of living, stabilise foreign exchange
and create jobs, among others,” he said.

Idris said, against the backdrop of the withdrawal of fuel subsidy, liberalising the foreign exchange regime, and the fight against corruption, the Tinubu’ government
is showing fidelity to the rule of law.

According to him, the independence of institutions l, including the judiciary were demonstrated in the recent judgements of the courts.

The Minister explained that the recent decision to relocate certain departments of the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) and the headquarters of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to Lagos is part of a broader strategy to enhance operational efficiency.

He said the decision would also ensure a responsive financial system and cut operations cost.

  • Alleged N109bn fraud: Ex-AGF Idris objected to against EFCC ‘s video evidence

Alleged N109bn fraud: Ex-AGF Idris objected to against EFCC ‘s video evidence

A former Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Ahmed Idris, on Thursday in an FCT High Court objected to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) tendering a video recording of an interview session operatives had with him and others.

The compact disc containing the video was tendered by the prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, through the prosecution first witness (PW1) in the trial-within-trial in the ongoing trial of Idris and three others for an alleged fraud.

The trial-within-trial was ordered by the court following the objection raised by counsel for Idris, Chris Uche, SAN.

The trial was on grounds that his client’s statements the prosecution sought to tender on Nov. 23, 2022 were not made on the ground of deception and inducement.

They were brought before Justice Yusuf Halilu, by EFCC, on behalf of the Federal Government in the case marked, CR/199/2022.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

At the resumed hearing of the matter , the EFCC witness, Hayatudeen Sulaiman Ahmed, told the court that Idris’s statements were not obtained through deception.

He stated that the investigating team recorded the interview session it had with Idris, Akindele and Usman, which was later burnt on a compact disc.

When the prosecution counsel sought to tender the video recording, Idris’s counsel opposed it’s tendering, saying that it amounted to ambush of the defence.

“We vehemently oppose to the strategy of springing this video on the defendants. The witness said the video was recorded on 25th May, 2022, almost three years ago.

“By constitutional provision, the defendants ought to have been served this to enable them prepare their defence,” Uche said.

He added that he was only served the video on Wednesday evening and was not able to view it before coming to court.

Counsel for other defendants aligned their objections with Uche’s with counsel for Akindele , Joe Abraham SAN, describing it as “a strange bird from a whirlwind”.

Despite the objections, Justice Halilu ruled against the defendants and admitted the video, which was marked as an exhibit in the trial-with-trial, following which it was played in the open court.

According to Halilu, the video was made after investigation established that the first to third defendants benefitted from non-existent consultancy from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation at the time Idris was the AGF.

Under cross examination by Uche, the witness said lawyers of the three defendants were not present when investigators interviewed them on May 25, 2022.

He admitted that Idris made some of his statements to EFCC in the absence of his lawyer, one Gbenga Adeyemi, while some were made in the presence of the lawyer.

The witness further admitted that apart from the interview session with the three defendants that was recorded, there was no video recordings of other statements made by Idris.

“There are no videos for other statements made by the first defendant (Idris). We have witnesses.

“We don’t bring suspects together to take their statements. We didn’t tell them we were recording the video. There was no lawyer for any of the defendants during the recording of the video.”

He further told the court that the video clip played in court did not capture everything that happened during the interview session, which he said could be more than one hour.

Ahmed told the court that he could not remember how many statements the first defendant made to EFCC, though he was involved in taking the statements.

Meanwhile, Justice Halilu adjourned trial until March 20, he however set aside the court’s order revoking the bail granted Akindele.

This followed an application made to that effect by counsel for Akindele, Joe Abraham , SAN, informing the court that the second defendant was not in court at the last sitting .

This according to him , was that his client was held up in traffic but eventually made it to court that day but the case was already adjourned.

The prosecutor was, however, not against the application.

Alleged N109bn fraud: Court revokes ex-AGF Idris, co-defendant’s bail

Justice Yusuf Halilu of an FCT, Maitama, Abuja, on Tuesday revoked the bail earlier granted one of the defendants in the trial of a former Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris over an alleged fraudulent diversion of public funds to the tune of N109.5million.

The defendant, Geoffrey Olusegun Akindele’s bail was revoked by the judge following his non-appearance in court for continuation of trial.

Akindele, who is the second defendant in the case marked, CR/199/2022, and Idris are standing trial alongside Mohammed Kudu Usman and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) dragged them to court on a 14-count charge bordering on stealing, fraudulent diversion of public fund to the tune of N109.5 billion.

Idris, among others, was alleged to have between Feb. and Dec. 2021, while being a public servant by virtue of his position as Accountant-General of the Federation accepted from Olusegun Akindele, the second defendant, a gratification of the aggregate sum of N15, 136, 221, 921.46, which was converted to dollars equivalent by Akindele.

The money, according to the prosecution, did not form part of Idris’s remuneration but a motive for accelerating the payment of 13% derivation to nine oil producing states in the federation through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.

EFCC alleged they thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 155 of the Penal Code Act Cap 533 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990 and punishable under the same section.

Idris and Akindele, who was Technical Assistant to the Accountant-General of the Federation, were accused of committing criminal breach of trust while being entrusted with certain property, to wit N84,390,000,000 between Feb. and Nov. 2021 by dishonestly receiving the said amount from the Federal Government through Godfrey Olusegun Akindele, trading under the name and style of Olusegun Akindele & Co.

By this, acccording to EFCC, the first and second defendants were alleged to have committed an offence punishable under Section 315 of the Penal Code Act Cap 532 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them by the anti-corruption commission.

At the resumed hearing of the matter on Tuesday, Akindele was absent in court as of the time the case was called, though Idris and Usman were in court.

Despite pleas by counsel for Akindele, S.E. Adino that his client was on the way to court, submitting that he (Akindele) has always been in court to face trial, Justice Halilu insisted on revoking the second defendant’s bail.

The judge held that after listening to what Adino said, when a court grants a defendant bail, such person must reciprocate the gesture by attending court for trial.

He added that, Akindele had clearly not shown good character and conduct by his refusal to attend court.

” The second defendant had abuse the terms of his bail.”

Halilu subsequently revoked his bail and ordered the FCT Commissioner of Police and the EFCC to arrest Akindele and produce him in court in the next adjourned date.

He then adjourned the case until Feb. 1, 2024 for definite hearing.

Earlier, the prosecuting counsel, Oluwaleke Atolagbe, had informed the court that the prosecution received a letter from counsel for Idris and did not receive any from the counsel for Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited.

Atolagbe said despite the fact that there were competent lawyers in the office of Idris’ lawyer, none of them announced appearance for the former Accountant-General of the Federation.

He added that he saw two lawyers from the office yesterday morning in court, saying that, “This is not fair on the prosecution. It is definitely a ploy to delay trial.”

Tinubu inherited P&ID case but dealt with it – Minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammad Idris, said on Monday that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was elated by UK court reversal of $11bn awarded against Nigeria.

Idris stated this while fielding questions from the State House correspondents at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC), held at the presidential villa, Abuja.

”Let me reiterate that Nigeria actually saved $11.6bn by that singular judgment. You recall that this is not a case that was instituted against this administration.

”It is against the Federal Government of Nigeria over the years. The government of President Bola Tinubu inherited it but dealt with it judiciously and expeditiously. It ensured that all legal mechanisms were put in place to get us to win that case.

”So, it was actually a very delightful moment during the Federal Executive Council meeting when the news filtered in that Nigeria had indeed won this case. And of course, as expected, the President was very elated.

”So also were members of the Finance Council. We’re all very happy that that news filtered in and this is one direction that Mr president is going, ensuring that things are dealt with expeditiously, responsibly, and with utmost responsibility.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). reports that a Business and Property Court in London, presided over by Justice Robin Knowles of the Commercial Courts of England and Wales, had quashed the $11 billion awarded against Nigeria in a case filed by the Process and Industrial Developments Company, (P&ID).

Judge Knowles held that the award was obtained by fraud and that what had happened in the case was contrary to public policy.

The court also declared that it did not find any merit in the charges of bribery levelled against a former Attorney-General of Lagos State, Mr Olasupo Shasore, SAN, who represented Nigeria in the arbitration.

In the case marked: CL-2019-000752, the Federal Government sought to overturn $6.6 billion arbitration awarded in favour of P&ID in 2017.

The award had continued to accrue interest since then, rising to approximately $11 billion before the judgment.

‘’Nigeria has been able to make the kind of macro-economic moves to take the tough decisions to restore balance in the economy in the government’s finances that has warranted support.

“This had engendered support from the multilateral development banks.

‘’It is on this basis that the world bank is willing to consider and to process on our behalf $1.5 billion of concessional financing, relatively cheap financing and financing that will be dispersed relatively quickly,’’ he said.

Edun said that another $80 million financing from the African Development Bank was approved by the FEC for the Ekiti Knowledge Zone (EKZ) project aimed at empowering the youths in the sector of Knowledge Economy through technology and communications generally.

He said, ‘’This is basically to support young people and their quest to take on technology to use it to be employed to be trained and to benefit from being part of the knowledge economy.

“This is being part of the technological wave that is present very much in Nigeria, which is becoming a bigger and bigger share of the economy.’’

While briefing the state house correspondents, Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong , said that FEC gave approval for the agreement between labour and the government during the October 2 meeting.

‘’Presidential approval was given after analysing the agreement to provide for industrial harmony. Similarly, the 30 days implementation timeline agreed on was also approved by FEC,’’ he said.
