    British actor Idris Elba plays Nigerian DJ in new series

    British award-winning actor and musician, Idris Elba has been cast as DJ Charlie Ayo, a Nigerian Disc Jockey in new series ‘Turn Up Charlie’.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the series, which recently premiered on Netflix, follows Charlie, who is 20 years past his lone hit and too ashamed to tell his parents back in Nigeria that he’s a failure.

    Charlie is given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a nanny to his famous best friend’s problem-child daughter.

    Throughout the series, Charlie’s parents are back home in Nigeria, so he lives with his old-school aunt, Lydia, who has no tolerance for him and his antics.

    The British web series was written by Nigerian-British actor and writer, Femi Oyeniran joined Laura Neal, Victoria Asare-Archer, and Georgia Lester.

    NAN reports that Oyeniran wrote episode five of ‘Turn Up Charlie,’ which was directed by Matt Lipsey.

    This is not the first time Elba, who is also a DJ and rapper, is taking on an African character. He starred as Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom in 2013.

    He has been nominated four times for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film, winning one and was nominated five times for a Primetime Emmy Award.

    Acclaimed actor, Idris Elba has been named the sexiest man alive in 2018 by PEOPLE Magazine. He was named during ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’.

    The sexy role interpreter who was not physically present, said he is more than happy to wear the mantle of “Sexiest Man Alive.” He said, he’s honoured and his mum would be very proud.

     

    He wrote on Twitter: “Who’d have thought it! Thank you @people & all the fans for naming me#SexiestManAlive. Don’t forget to grab your issue this week I’m honoured & thankful. What’s even more important is your vote in the midterm elections. Your vote can make a difference!”

    Idrissa Akuna Elba, an only child, was born on 6 September 1972 in Hackney, London.

    His paternal grandfather, Moses, was a sailor and a policeman. His father, Winston, was a Sierra Leonean who worked at Ford Dagenham, and his mother, Eve, was Ghanaian.Elba’s parents were married in Sierra Leone and later moved to London.

    Elba was brought up in Hackney and East Ham,and shortened his first name to “Idris” at school in Canning Town, where he first became involved in acting. He credits The Stage with giving him his first big break; having seen an advertisement for a play in a newspaper, Elba auditioned and met his first agent while performing in the role.

    Renowned actor, Idris Elba is engaged to be married to his partner Sabrina Dhowre after popping the question at a cinema in London on Saturday morning.

     

    The British actor, got down on one knee in front of colleagues at the premiere of his new film Yardie – and everyone in the audience cheered as she said yes.

     

     

    Rio Cinema in Dalston, which was hosting the screening, confirmed the happy news on Twitter with a picture of Idris grinning.

     

    “Another riocinema first! Still 5 days to Valentines Day but idriselba went down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend live on stage this morning before a preview of his film Yardie, ” they tweeted.
