    The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila on Sunday visited the wife of Ifeanyi Okereke Elechi, the newspaper vendor reportedly shot dead by one of his security aides.

    The woman was just delivered of a child and the family was preparing for the naming ceremony before the unfortunate incident.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Speaker Gbajabiamila is meeting with the wife of the late Abuja vendor after the parents arrived in the federal capital territory (FCT).

    Gbajabiamila had vowed to the family that he would support the wife and the immediate family left behind.

    The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has revealed the identity of his security aide who killed Abuja vendor, Ifeanyi Okereke Elechi.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Gbajabiamila revealed the aide’s identity on Friday following street protest by association of newspaper vendors in the federal capital territory (FCT).

    In a statement, Gbajabiamila revealed the security operative as Abdullahi M. Hassan, saying he has been handed over to the Department of State Security (DSS) for investigation and appropriate administrative and judicial action.

    The statement reads: “The unfortunate death of Mr. Ifeanyi Okereke at the hands of one of my security aides has left me deeply shaken.

    “Mr. Okereke was a citizen going about his business, trying to make a living for himself and his family. There is no reason for his life to have ended the way it did.

    “This morning, I have handed over the security operative, Abdullahi M. Hassan, to the Department of State Security (DSS) for investigation and appropriate administrative and judicial action. In the interim, he has been suspended from the convoy.

    “I expect, and I will see to it that the family of Mr Ifeanyi Okereke receives the full measure of justice so that their bereavement is not compounded by any actions that can cause them further pain and suffering.

    “I have expressed my personal condolence to his family and have arranged to meet with them when the parents of Mr. Okereke, who are already on their way, arrive in Abuja.

    “Additionally, I have committed to them that I will support his wife and the immediate family he has left behind.

    “I commiserate with the family of Mr. Ifeanyi Okereke and ask all Nigerians to join me at this time to pray for the peaceful repose of his soul”.

    Newspaper vendors stage protest against Gbajabiamila over Ifeanyi Elechi’s death

    The association of newspaper vendors has taken to the streets of Abuja, the federal capital territory (FCT) to stage a protest against Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila over the killing of Ifeanyi Elechi.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports a security officer attached to the Speaker of the House of Representatives killed Ifeanyi on Thursday.

    Gbajabiamila explained that the tragic incident happened when his security attachment tried to disperse unidentified men who obstructed his convoy.

    The newspaper vendors were seen in the streets of Abuja carrying placards that read: “vendors lives matter”, “vendors are also human beings”, “justice for Elechi”, “Femi Gbajabiamila aide killed a vendor”, etc.

    Earlier, the newspaper vendors under the aegis of Abuja Newspapers Distributors Association (ANDA) had issued a statement directing its members to assemble at Area 1, Abuja for the demonstration.

    ANDA’s President, Benji Obute stated, “By this arrangement, papers won’t be shared tomorrow until 10am, all distributors and vendors are to converge at Area 1 as no paper will be allowed in the streets until after the protest.

    “Media Houses are enjoined to cooperate with us and ensure that no single paper is leaked out as any paper that defaults will be sanctioned. We must join hands to get justice for the fallen vendor.

    “As many as have cardboard papers, markers and other materials needed for the peaceful protest should kindly come with them to the distribution ground tomorrow morning”.

    Ifeanyi Elechi, the young newspaper vendor that was allegedly killed by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila’s security aide on Thursday was to name his new born baby today.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the newspaper vendor along the Federal Secretariat road who died of bullet wounds shot by Gbajabiamila’s aide had scheduled his baby’s naming ceremony for today before the cold hands of death claimed him at about 4.30 pm on Thursday.

    In a chat with TNG one of his friends, late evening on Thursday, who refused to disclose his name, said Ifeanyi was full of life before the incident.

    “We were even preparing for his child’s ceremony before Gbajabiamila security killed him. We have plans to protest on Friday to let government know that this is a serious matter,” Ifeanyi’s friend told TNG.

    TNG in the course of probing this matter had called Elechi’s number and it was picked by a man who claimed the line was his that Elechi had used it to call this reporter in the past.

    Meanwhile, Speaker Gbajabiamila has reacted, saying he is personally distraught about the incident and that his deepest sympathies go to the victim, his family and Abuja vendors.

    His words: “A horrible incident has taken place. This evening as I left the national assembly, I stopped as usual to exchange pleasantries with the newspaper vendors at the corner. Many of them have known me since I first moved to Abuja and it was a friendly exchange.

    “Unfortunately, after the convoy set out in continuation of movement, unidentified men obstructed the convoy which got the attention of security men in the convoy who shot into the air to disperse them.

    “Some hours later, after getting to our destination, it was brought to my attention that someone was hit by a stray bullet, contrary to an earlier report by men in the convoy that they applied their security discretion to shoot in the air.

    “I am personally distraught about this incident and my deepest sympathies go to the victim, his family and Abuja vendors”.
