2023: Okowa’s indepth presentation at Arise tv town hall debate+video

Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa who represented the presidential candidate of PDP, Atiku Abubakar at the Arise presidential town hall debate left no one in doubt as to the readiness of his party to move Nigeria forward in 2023.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls that the presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar who’s far away in Morocco had formally written to the organisers that due to his absence his vice, Okowa can adequately represent him.

The Delta State Governor true to Atiku’s position delivered convincingly as he adequately tackled all questions revolving around the Nigerian economy and statehood.

On debt and the economy, Okowa said:

“From 1999 to 2007, we knew where President Obasanjo and VP Atiku, met the country and where they left it. Because of them, we were able to pay back a lot of our debt and we had debt forgiveness.”

“In Delta State, we used to have agitations in oil-producing communities. But now, we have partnered in these communities to create jobs, create a new class of entrepreneurs and show people that we care about development.”

“The right path is to use government resources to develop entrepreneurs, make people’s lives easier, and grow the economy so that people will live in better conditions.

He further explained that “it’s wrong each time we have a little crisis we get into trouble, COVID came we got into trouble because of our dependence on oil but this is wrong.

“We need to diversify our economy and all these are documented in our manifesto on how to venture into agriculture, modernise agriculture, agro processing and others in our manifesto.

On women 35percent affirmation, Okowa said this is also well captured in the party’s manifesto “as you know our women are now well trained unlike before and they are very capable in their duties.

Asked what will his party do to ensure there’s credible elections in Nigeria, the vice presidential candidate said”it’s expensive to organize elections in Nigeria and campaigns are expensive in this part of the world.

“But to get it right we must put a credible electoral system in place and once this is done voters will vote out those who could not keep their promises.

In devolution of powers, Okowa said “it’s not right for the Federal Government to collect over 50percent and at the end of the month peanuts are dished out to states.

“The local governments should be given more powers because that’s where the people are so power should be there.

On agitators such as IPOB, Boko Haram, the vice presidential candidate declared that “we will identify the genuine agitators and the criminal elements and appropriately handle the situation.

“We’ll sit with them and discuss and once they’re assured things will take shape if Nigeria is working for everybody no section will feel excluded and there will be hope for all.

  • Oborevwori: Big burden off Okowa’s shoulder – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Oborevwori: Big burden off Okowa’s shoulder – By Ehichioya Ezomon

The October 21, 2022, judgment of the Supreme Court, affirming Sheriff Oborevwori as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Delta State, surely calls for celebration and thanksgiving by the party faithful.

PDP’s vice presidential candidate and Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa backs Oborevweri – the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly – to succeed him.

But his godfather, former Governor James Onanefe Ibori, kicks against it, and supports Olorogun David Edevbie – the Plaintiff/Appellant in the case against Oborevweri.

That’s why Okowa led in the worship of the Almighty for lifting a legal jeopardy that would’ve had a serious impact on his and Oborevwori’s tickets in the 2023 elections.

News about the court verdict had hardly been relayed when Dr Okowa joined Oborevwori at a thanksgiving at the Government House Chapel, Asaba, the state capital city.

Okowa, who’s reportedly made regular thanksgiving to God a centrepiece of his administration, noted that “Oborevweri has passed through a test of faith,” and urged him to “steadfastly hold on to God for giving you the (court) victory,” adding that, “God will do more for you.”

Okowa praising God for Oborevweri was also praying for himself, as their 2023 aprons are tied together. Had the court truncated Oborevweri’s bid, the rug could’ve been pulled from under Okowa in his quest to be vice president.

Actually, the jury’s out already: That the PDP would lose Delta – one of the party’s strongholds since 1999 – to the rival All Progressives Congress, at the state and national levels in the February-March 2023 General Election.

Facing intra-party pressures at the local and national levels, it’s easy for pundits to deduce that Okowa and Oborevwori’s ambitions were in flames, and that the APC’s a shoo-in for president and governor, respectively, in Delta.

The Supreme Court ruling may’ve altered that calculation, hence the PDP wasted no time in taunting the APC for its “fleeting but misplaced expectations” for power in Delta.

Delta PDP’s spokesman, Ifeanyi Osuoza, said: “With the judgement delivered by the Supreme Court and the matter fully settled, the PDP is now much stronger and will be more united and formidable going into the 2023 elections.

“The litigation, which centred around the legal affirmation of our authentic governorship candidate, had initially given fleeting but misplaced expectations to the fractured opposition APC.

“But their hopes have been comprehensively and completely dashed with the decisive judgement of the Supreme Court, which has now settled the matter once and for all.

“As we celebrate this very important landmark judgement, we hereby appeal strongly and sincerely to all our members, especially Olorogun David Edevbie, to wholeheartedly embrace the Supreme Court decision.

“Now that the legal fireworks are over and done with, we call on all our loyal, committed, and unwavering party members, to come together as one big united family. They should sheath their swords and let bygones be bygones.

“Our ultimate goal now is to win the 2023 general elections in all positions and with everyone joining hands and all pulling in one definite, unwavering direction towards victory.”

The PDP can celebrate, thanks to Edevbie, who took Oborevwori to court, alleging forgery in the documents submitted by Oborevwori to the PDP for clearance to participate in the May 2022 governorship primaries.

But in his haste to nail Oborevwori, Edevbie, who came second at the primaries, failed to comply with the court processes and procedure for interrogating actions that border on criminality, which forgery falls into.

Edevbie didn’t wait for the PDP to send Oborevwori’s documents to the Independence National Electoral Commission before questioning their authenticity in court.

Rather than come by way of a Writ of Summons – to allow for oral and documentary evidence – Edevbie filed for only affidavit evidence, which’s fatal to his allegations that must be proved beyond reasonable doubt.

These were the main pillars – not whether the documents were really forged with discrepancies – upon which the Supreme Court rested its verdict on the Edevbie case.

In a unanimous decision by a five-man panel, led by Justice Amina Augie, the apex court dismissed Edevbie’s appeal as “lacking in merit,” as the allegations raised against Oborevweri were rooted in criminality.

The court noted that Edevbie ought to commence his action through a Writ of Summons, to allow the trial court to adjudge the matter via oral and documentary evidence.

The court held that Edevbie’s “sundry allegations of fraud, false representation and forgery of documents” couldn’t be resolved via affidavit evidence or Originating Summons.

The court also held that Edevbie’s case was premature, as the PDP hadn’t submitted Oborevwori’s name to the INEC before he filed the suit, adding that, “Only upon the submission of particulars of a candidate to INEC by a political party will a cause of action crystallise.”

In the lead judgement, Justice Tijjani Abubakar said the Supreme Court saw no reason to set aside the Court of Appeal ruling that upheld Oborevwori’s nomination, declaring that, “In conclusion, I found no merit in this appeal and it is accordingly dismissed.”

In closing, the Edevbie case fulfils these sayings: * “Those who are too clever sometimes overreach themselves.” * “If you’re not careful in pursuing your enemy, you’ll pay for it.” * When the Lord wants to fight for you, He makes your enemy to make irreversible mistakes.”

Edevbie, a very brilliant personality, was in such a hurry to nail Oborevwori that he didn’t realise that his entire writ was defective and lacked foundation from the get go.

You can’t place something on nothing and expect it to stand. As the Appeal and Supreme Courts observed, Edevbie couldn’t rely on affidavit evidence on the weighty criminal allegations he levelled against Oborevwori.

In his haste, Edevbie also breached the law of natural justice, by taking Oborevwori to court not on the outcome of the primaries that Oborevweri had won, but on the basis of an opposition research material on him.

Perhaps aware of the deck stacked against him due to Okowa’s backing for Oborevwori, Edevbie had intended the “oppo” material as “Plan B” to disqualify Oborevweri.

But as Oborevweri observed on October 21, at the thanksgiving to celebrate the Supreme Court judgment, “… when you have God, you are sure of victory… and we return all the Glory to God.”

One hurdle crossed, Okowa and Oborevweri should work to reconcile aggrieved Delta PDP members. Oborevwori says he’s “no enemy nor the ability to hate anyone,” even as he believes that, “my brothers from the other side (Edevbie’s camp) will join us in no distant time…”

Let’s hope that that belief – and PDP’s “strong and sincere appeal to members… to wholeheartedly embrace the Supreme Court decision” – will yield dividend, as the 2023 polls barrel down to less than four months away!

Delta Assembly grants Okowa’s request for another N5.2bn loan

The Delta House of Assembly has granted Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa’s request for N4 billion bank facility to fund the proposed National Social Housing Programme in the state.

This followed the adoption of a motion by the Majority leader, Chief Ferguson Onwo and seconded by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Christopher Ochor at Tuesday’s plenary in Asaba.

The house also granted another request for a N1.2 billion loan from Globus Bank Limited to provide counterpart funding for 2022 Universal Basic Education Programme (UBEC) projects in the state.

This also followed the adoption of a motion by the Majority Leader and seconded by Mr Emeke Nwaobi (PDP-Aniocha North).

The governor had transmitted a letter to the House seeking approval for the N4 billion loan.

Okowa said that the loan which would be taken from Globus Bank Limited or any other financial institution, would be used for the construction of affordable homes across four locations in the state.

He said that the approval being sought was in fulfilment of one of the conditions for family homes funds limited to proceed with the construction of 779 affordable homes in the state.

Okowa said that the homes would be located in Kwale in Ndokwa East, Ekpan in Uvwie, Ibusa in Oshimili North and Owa-Ekei in Ika North East local government areas of the state by Family Homes Fund Limited (FHFL) under the proposed national social housing programme.

The governor said that the initiative was geared toward addressing the housing deficit as well as meeting the welfare needs of the people of the state.

Okowa said that the State Executive Council at its 10th meeting of Sept.15 considered and approved the N4 billion loan from Globus Bank Limited.

“This letter is to seek the authorization of the Honourable House for Delta government to accept the loan facility from Globus Bank Limited or any other financial institution and issue an appropriate Irrevocable Standing Payment Order (ISPO) in favour of the accepting Bank to defray the loan,” he said.

Okowa also transmitted another letter seeking permission to take a N1.2 billion loan for counterpart funding of UBEC projects in the state.

”Considering the state’s limited cash-flow at the moment, vis-a-vis the current Monetary Policy Rates released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), it became necessary to seek a financial option that will ensure the state benefits from the UBEC grant by meeting its obligations at favourable terms and conditions.

”Incidentally, Globus Bank Limited has indicated interest in providing the state with the required fund, having submitted an offer letter reflecting terms considered favourable to the state, in light of the current economic realities.

”The loan would be paid  back in 12 months. Sequel to the foregoing, the State Executive Council at its 10th meeting held on Sept. 15, 2022 considered and approved that the State government obtains N1.2 billion loan facility from Globus Bank Limited as counterpart fund matching grant for 2022 UBEC projects in the state,” he said.

2023: How Okowa betrayed his people, entire South – Omo-Agege

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 governorship election in Delta State has said the State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa betrayed his people and the entire southern region of the country.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Senator Omo-Agege stated this on Monday in Asaba, the State capital during the inauguration of his campaign council.

The event, which was held at the APC’s campaign office along Summit road, Asaba drew a large turnout of party faithful and supporters across the state.

In his speech, Omo-Agege, also the Deputy Senate President, charged the campaign council to hit the ground running, saying the time has come for the APC to reclaim the state from the PDP.

He charged all party faithful to work with the campaign council to ensure grassroot mobilisation to ensure victory of the APC come 2023.

“All of you here are members of the campaign council. Every party member, right from the wards to the state level is charged with delivering the party.

“So, I urge everyone here to go back home to your wards, spread the good news that the APC has come to deliver the people of Delta.

“As you vote for Omo-Agege to be your governor, don’t forget that we need our men in all positions. We must deliver our senators in the three senatorial districts.

“As you spread the message, don’t forget that as a party, we have a mandate to deliver our presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It has to be APC all the way.

“Here in Delta, 2023 is our turn, the decision has been taken and that is what I have come here today to tell you all,” he said.

The deputy senate president said that the APC family in Delta would work assiduously to truncate the vice-presidential ambition of Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa.

“Okowa betrayed his people of Delta and the entire Southern Nigeria. He hosted a meeting of Southern governors here in Asaba where a resolution was taken that it was the turn for a southern president.

“But he turn around to betray his people. We must work to truncate his ambition. He can’t go anywhere,” Omo-Agege said.

The Delta APC governorship campaign council comprised of notable chieftains of the party, among them a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe, as Director-General.

Oborevwori, in an interview after the thanksgiving, thanked God for the victory and urged all party members to join the team to ensure victory for the party.

The Supreme Court on Friday affirmed Oborevwori as the governorship candidate of PDP in Delta.

At the PDP primary in May, Oborevwori polled 590 votes to beat David Edevbie, who polled 113 votes.

However, Edevbie, aggrieved by the outcome of the primary had filed a suit against Oborevwori and the party, citing discrepancies in Oborevwori’s certificates.

Supreme Court: Delta PDP felicitates Oborevwori, says victory for the party

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta, has celebrated the Supreme Court judgement which confirmed Chief Sheriff Oborevwori, as the duly elected, substantive Governorship Candidate of the Party in the 2023 general elections.

The PDP, in a statement issued by its State Publicity Secretary, Dr Ifeanyi Osuoza, on Friday in Asaba, appealed to all party faithfuls and Olorogun David Edevbie to close ranks as the party begins full campaign in the state.

Edevbie, who came second at the PDP Governorship  primaries, had challenged the credibility of Chief Sheriff Oborevwori, who won the Governorship primary.

The party noted that the long-drawn litigation over the matter of the Party’s authentic gubernatorial candidate had initially given the opposition false hope.

“But with the judgement now delivered by the Supreme Court and the matter fully settled, the PDP is now much stronger and will be more united and formidable going into the 2023 elections.

It described the judgement as victory for the Delta PDP family and appealed to all party faithful, especially Olorogun David Edevbie, to close ranks and march with full confidence and authority into the Party’s campaigns.

“The Delta state PDP heartily rejoices with all our faithful, loyal and committed members of the PDP family as we celebrate the Supreme Court judgement, which finally confirmed Sheriff Oborevwori, as our duly elected governorship candidate and party flag bearer for the 2023 election.

“The litigation, which centred around the legal affirmation of our authentic governorship candidate, had initially given fleeting but misplaced expectations to the fractured opposition APC, but their hopes have been comprehensively and completely dashed with the decisive judgement of the Supreme Court, which has now settled the matter once and for all.

“We congratulate all members of our great PDP Delta family over this massive judgement from the Supreme Court which has settled all doubts and disquiet, strengthened our position and resolve to embrace our campaigns with renewed energy and vigour towards victory in 2023.

“As we celebrate this very important landmark judgement, we hereby appeal strongly and sincerely to all our members, especially Olorogun David Edevbie, to wholeheartedly embrace the Supreme Court decision.”

It urged them to join the party in its collective quest to build a most formidable campaign team that would not only decimate the opposition, but also deliver resounding landslide victories in all elections.

“Now that the legal fireworks are over and done with, we call on all our loyal, committed, and unwavering party members, to come together as one big united family.

Flooding: Uzum calls for support, commends the media for reportage

The Director-General (DG) of the Delta State Orientation Bureau, Eugene Azuka Uzum Esq, has called on public-spirited individuals, including philanthropists, civil society organisations and particularly corporate establishments to, as part of their social responsibilities, support the internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps in the state.

Uzum made the appeal when he visited the Ogbe-Afor, Onne and Ewulu IDPs camps alongside the state governor, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa.

He said that at this critical situation, occasioned by the ravaging flooding in some parts of the state, there was the need to lend a helping hand to mitigate the unfortunate situation and ensure the welfare of the flood victims in the camps.

He commiserated with the families of a few persons that lost their lives to the flood and prayed for the repose of their souls, even as he enjoined those still residing in the flooded area to relocate upland and ensure that children did not swim or bath in the flood water because of some dangerous animals and reptiles.

The orientation helmsman commended the media for timely reportage on the flooding and for creating a seamless communication channel between the state government and the people and urged for continuous accurate reporting on the situation to keep both the state government and the people informed.

  • PDP crisis: I accept Atiku, Okowa but Ayu must resign – Gov Wike

PDP crisis: I accept Atiku, Okowa but Ayu must resign – Gov Wike

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has said he accepts Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 elections.

Governor Wike also said he accepts Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as the vice presidential candidate of the party but that the party’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu must resign.

Wike made this disclosure in Port Harcourt on Thursday while hosting the Cross River PDP governorship candidate, Sen. Sandy Onor, and party stalwarts who visited him.

While stressing that rent seekers in the PDP were frustrating his efforts for amicable resolution of the crisis rocking the party, the Rivers State Governor explained that the seeming intractable crisis in the party lingered because some vested interests, whom he described as “hyenas and rent seekers” remained obstinate and averse to justice, fairness and equity.

He said he would not support the current situation where the party’s presidential candidate, the national chairman and the director-general of the Presidential Campaign Council are all from the northern part of the country.

The governor said it was hypocritical of PDP members to criticise Muslim/Muslim ticket, while supporting that a particular region of the country should retain the presidency for another eight years.

He insisted that for the sake of peace, PDP should adhere to its Constitution, which recommends that when a presidential candidate emerges from the North, the national chairman should be from the South.

“The National Chairman said, if the presidential candidate comes from the North, he will resign; which means he has had this in mind. Now, the thing has come to reality; now resign, he said `no’ and people are saying go and talk to Wike.

“I have accepted the presidential candidate. I have accepted the vice- presidential candidate, what’s the problem again? You, fulfil your part. Let the South have something; that is all I am preaching. You cannot have presidential candidate, national chairman, director-general of the campaign,’’ he stressed.

Wike said there were more things that were wrong with the arrangement. “Nobody wants to speak the truth,’’ he persisted. According to him, refusal to cede the national chairmanship position to the South will be a recipe for crisis in the party.

He said that the clamour for the chairmanship of the PDP to be zoned to the South would persist until justice, fairness and equity prevailed. Wike said the visit of the Cross Rivers delegates would spur him to continue to support the party in Cross River ahead of the 2023 general elections.

He announced the donation of 25 buses to the party in Cross River and said while he would not go to the state to vote, he would support the candidates as his friends. He thanked Cross River PDP delegates for the support given to him at the PDP presidential primary election.

Earlier, Sen. Onor, who led the delegation, said Gov. Wike remained a trail blazer for justice, fairness and equity. Onor stressed that no person in the contemporary history of the PDP had made more sacrifices for the party than Gov. Wike had done.

He commended Wike for his steadfast support for the party in Cross River, and said the visit was to express the party’s gratitude for his unparalleled benevolence.

Similarly, Sen. Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, (PDP-Cross River-North) noted that without Wike’s support, PDP would have been made extinct in Cross River.

On his part, Mr Venatius Ikem, Cross River PDP Chairman, thanked Wike for his unrelenting support of the party.

The delegation comprised South-South PDP National Vice-Chairman, Mr Dan Orbih and other party members. Also in the delegation were Cross River PDP senatorial, House of Representatives, House of Assembly candidates and PDP local government party chairmen.

  • Former aide to Gov Okowa bags appointment in Labour Party

Former aide to Gov Okowa bags appointment in Labour Party

The Labour Party has appointed Osheokwu Onochie, a former aide to Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as the State coordinator of the party’s campaign for the 2023 elections.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Onochie was among the 1,234-member presidential campaign council unveiled by the party in Abuja on Wednesday

Unveiling the team, the Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Council, Dr Doyin Okupe said retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Zarewa, would serve as its chairman.

Some of the members are Mr Oseloka Obaze, who would serve as Deputy Director-General and Campaign Manager, and Alhaji Yusuf Maitama, Deputy Director-General (North).

Also in the council are Mr Yunusa Tanko, Spokesperson and Mr Clement Ojukwu, Secretary.

Mr Denzel Ketenbe is Deputy Director-General (South); Mr Isaac Balami, Deputy Campaign Manager 1, and Mrs Eyitemi Taire, Deputy Campaign Manager 3, among others.

Okupe noted that it took 12 million votes for the incumbent president to win the presidential election in 2019 and that the Labour Party already had 15 million votes on ground.

“As we begin the 2023 round of electioneering campaigns, the registered voter population figure has tripled since 2019. More than 60 per cent of the nearly 100 million registered voters today are the youths.

“This shows that there are more new voters in the voter register than old ones, and all the newly-registered voters are `OBIdients’.

“It is just for us to pray for life till the elections; we will show them. Nigeria is a youthful stream and they are ready to support Labour Party all the way,’’ Okupe said.

He added that the Peter Obi and Dr Datti Baba-Ahmed LP ticket had been lovingly and organically accepted by the people of Nigeria, because of their robust and endearing records, personalities, vision, policies and promise.

Okupe said also that the most remarkable, organic, self-funded movement at the vanguard of the political temperature in present time – the New Nigeria Movement, is made up of the youth population.

He stressed that the movement had taken on a life of its own and had become an unprecedented and formidable force in Nigeria’s national equation, beyond all imagination.

He added that the ascendancy of LP’s presidential ticket to prime position in the hearts and minds of Nigerians had been fuelled by the patriotic zeal, creativity and shining example in discipline, character and decency of Obi and Datti.

“Unknown to many, a significant number of the youth and drivers of this movement are active members and supporters of other political parties.

“These are people who could not ignore the overbearing superiority in leadership quality, personal disposition, national appeal, private and public service record, and the clear-cut expression of vision and governance solutions of Obi and Datti.

“I make bold to say while the reality is becoming clearer to everyone, that these are the people who will decide the immediate future of this country,’’ he said.

Okupe stressed that the key message of the New Nigeria Movement also known as the `Take Back Nigeria Movement’ and more popularly as `The Obidient Movement’, signposts what people should give serious attention to.

He said that this was necessary because the bedrock of democracy is peoples’ power; and the most resourceful and powerful manifestation of this is the youth segment.

He said LP had not spent a kobo to organise, influence, or secure the massive following and support it had been getting from the Obidient Movement, till date.

“We in the Obi-Datti Presidential Organisation and the Labour Party, are totally and graciously humbled by this massive adoption of our candidates as the preferred candidates for the forthcoming election,’’ he said.

Okupe assured Nigerians that the party and its candidates would remain committed to honest, clean and issue-based engagements to turn around the fortunes of the nation.

He appealed to security agencies, the Judiciary, retired military and police officers, the middle class, civil servants, professional bodies, pensioners, the academia and religious bodies not to be complacent during elections.

“To INEC we say, this is its biggest test in recent history, and it has no choice but to act as a fair, impartial, fearless and patriotic umpire at the coming elections,’’ he said.

According to Okupe LP is fully committed and totally re-energised to making Nigeria work, and progressively develop.

“Hold us to our word that The Labour Party’s presidency of Peter Obi and Datti will cut wastage, and take bold steps to move Nigeria from consumption to production.

“Within four years, the Obi-Datti administration will embark on an aggressive investment drive in practicable smart agriculture,’’ he said.

He called on Nigerians to leave no PVC uncollected and also to turn out en-masse on Election Day.

The chairman of the party, Mr Julius Abure, represented by its National Secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk, said the party carefully compiled the campaign list to give the best to Nigerians.

“The party’s logo stands for the family and Nigeria can only be a better country when the family is united and benefiting from the leadership for the people and by the people.

“This is what we hope and pray our principal and the campaign council are going to work assiduously and sincerely, to bring in a new hub for a better Nigeria that everybody is yearning for.

“These people unveiled today will make history and make Nigeria a better place where everyone will wish to stay,’’ he said.
