Delta Govt. announces grants for 40 mission schools

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta said on Sunday that the state government would provide financial support to 40 schools it returned to religious missions in 2011.

Okowa said this during a thanksgiving service marking the end of the 16th Synod of the Asaba Diocese, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) at Cathedral Church of St. Peter, Bishop’s Court, Asaba.

The governor said the grant had became necessary to assist the schools in running effectively, particularly in the prevailing harsh economic situation in the country.

Okowa, accompanied by his wife, Edith and top government functionaries, read the first lesson taken from Ezra 3: 6 -13.

He congratulated the new Bishop of the Diocese, Rt. Rev. Kingsley Obuh, on his consecration and enthronement.

“It is not easy for such schools to be managed given the current economic condition of the nation,” he said.

He commended the church for drawing his attention to the plight of the schools, especially his promise to ensure that grants were given to missions.

The governor directed the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) to take action on the released grants to the affected schools.

“It is in the best interest of the Government of Delta State that they are supported to stand because they provide a space for study for some of our children.

“So, we will try to take action, at least, the first tranche of it to see what we can do to support our missions,” he said.

Okowa commended the church for its contributions to the health sector in the state, saying that their effort helped to provide health care services particularly to the less-privileged.

“As a government, we have continued to pay special attention to education and health.

“Delta has become a role model for contributory health insurance with over one million people enrolled in the scheme,” Okowa added.

Earlier in a sermon titled “Spiritual Foundations Inevitable for Sustainable Work with God,” Rt. Rev. Chigozirim Onyegbule, Bishop, Missionary Diocese, Ikwuano, Abia, urged Christians to build strong foundation in their work for God.

He said for Christians to work effectively for God, their spiritual foundation must be very solid, adding, “if your foundation is not strong you cannot withstand the problems of life.

“Everything in the face of the earth has a foundation and a weak foundation produces a miserable life.

“God is looking for those that He will partner but if your foundation is weak, God cannot work with you.”

  • 2023: I have not endorsed anyone for governor – Okowa

2023: I have not endorsed anyone for governor – Okowa

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta on Thursday says he has not endorsed any aspirant for the governorship or any other position for the 2023 general election.

The governor who disclosed this during the quarterly media interactions in Asaba, said though, politicians were using his name to campaign but the fact remains that he had not endorsed anyone.

According to him, a level playing ground will be provided for all aspirants to contest without hitches.

He said that with the three delegates per ward and other statutory delegates, it would be difficult for anyone including himself to hijack the process.

On his presidential ambition, Okowa, said that he has not been led to run.

“As a politician, “I am calculative, besides, as a member of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the windows for nomination has closed.”

He noted that the state government was committed to completing all current and ongoing projects.

Okowa said that efforts were on to secure funds to address all the projects to hedge against inflation and continuous review of contracts due to rising costs.

He disclosed that the government recently applied for a bridging fund of N150 billion through the state House of Assembly to address issues of funding projects.

Okowa said that all projects to be executed and paid for with the funds were clearly itemised, adding that it would address issues of inflation and contract review due to rising cost of materials in the country.

According to him, the bridging fund is not a loan, it is a part of the N170 billion owed the state government by the Federal Government due from over deductions for the 13 per cent oil revenue derivations.

He said that the Federal Government had agreed to pay the funds in tranches on quarterly remittal starting from this April for a period of five years.

“Like other eight states that benefited from the funds, we decided to take a bridging finance to hedge against inflation.

“It is only a smart economic sense to get the finance and finish ongoing projects, it is called bridging finance because the money already is owed to us by the Federal Government.

“I do not have apologies to people who do not understand and talk ignorantly because we are not taking a fresh loan, we are transparent about it as proceed will be used for settlement of listed ongoing projects and part of pension arrears.

“If we do not attend to the projects now, there will be an upward review due to escalation of prices, this is what I really want to avoid,” he said.

Okowa, reacting to a statement credited to Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege, on his administration spending of over N2 billion on political thugs, he cautioned politicians to always speak the truth.

He said that the total amount paid to all his aide was nowhere near one billion Naira adding that politicians must not hide under politics to tell the people what is not true.

The governor said that such high ranking politician and others should rather collaborate with government to seek the good of people of the state.

“Is Asaba and Okpanam no longer part of Delta North with the massive development done in the area that they alleged there is nothing to show?

“People should truly speak the truth and not to obviously lie because of politics,” Okowa said.

He said that his administration would not be distracted, adding that it is committed to delivering developmental projects till the last day in office.

Earlier in his remarks, the Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, noted that journalists in the state had been very supportive in propagating the policies and programmes of the state government.

Aniagwu urged them to sustain the partnership.

Also, the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu, expressed appreciation to Okowa for his media friendly disposition.

He said that journalists in the state were very happy that the state government had done well in the secretariat of the union in the state.

  • Nigeria needs to expand revenue sources for education – Okowa

Nigeria needs to expand revenue sources for education – Okowa

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta says the country should expand the frontiers of its revenue generation to mitigate the funding challenges inhibiting educational development.

Okowa said this after inspecting facilities at the Faculties of Engineering and Environmental Sciences, Owa-Alero Campus, University of Delta, Agbor, on Monday.

He said the nation needed to invest more funds in the infrastructure, human resource and equipment of the education sector to ensure the availability of full internet services in every university.

According to him, it is important to fund the educational system but unfortunately the nation’s economy is challenged.

“If you look at the national budget and most of the state budgets, you will find out that the Federal and State Governments are actually struggling.

“When you have so many competing forces to deal with in an annual budget, you try to put little funds across.

“Because, in the first instance, you have to ensure that you pay salaries and if at the end you have little left, then it is a major problem.

“Whenever I study the Federal Government budget, l feel very worried about the huge challenge we have as a nation.

“This is because you find out that every single kobo that is going into infrastructure development or capital development is actually borrowed,’’ he said.

The governor said there was huge problem when all resource that was available outside borrowing went into recurrent expenditure.

“And that is why if you study the budget in full at the federal level in the individual sector such as education and health; there are very huge funds available for recurrent expenditure because of payment of salaries.

“At the end, you only have between 10 to 15 or maximum 20 per cent for capital development; this in itself is a very huge problem,’’ Okowa explained.

He further said there was the need for the nation to find a way to prioritise by looking at the sectors that should be given greater attention.

“I think it requires a lot of work and a lot of prioritisation to deal with the sectors that are most important.

“All sectors are important but some sectors are definitely more important than others.

“So, it requires a genuine analysis of what we are doing at the moment and then have a rethink to be able to take us to where we ought to be,” he said.

The governor said that work at the faculties had progressed, adding that it should progress a little faster.

He added that the faculties had been accredited by the National University Commission and that lectures had since started in the campus.

  • 2023: PDP National Chairman, Governors storm Delta to resolve guber candidate crisis

2023: PDP National Chairman, Governors storm Delta to resolve guber candidate crisis

The crisis in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of Delta State over which zone should produce the next governor and the rumoured backing of two different aspirants by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and Chief James Ibori has shaken the root of the party to the extent that it now requires the national leadership of the party to intervene for peace to prevail and for much needed unity to return to the party.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathers that the National Chairman of PDP, Senator Iyorchia Ayu and some governors elected on the platform of the PDP are scheduled to visit the State on Friday over the prevailing crisis.

According to reliable sources, the move is to reconcile former Governor Ibori and incumbent Governor Ifeanyi Okowa whose gubernatorial choices of interest have thrown the PDP in Delta into a crisis situation.

There is also the fear that Governor Okowa may not respect the zoning arrangement in the state as he is also rumoured to be favorably disposed to honouring an agreement he is said to have with militant kingpin, Government Ekpemukpolo, aka Tompolo, that the Ijaw ethnic group will be allowed to present the candidate of the party to succeed him in 2023.

The fear among some party members, especially those of Urhobos who constitute Delta Central, is that Okowa is trying to play Urhobo candidates against each other thereby weakening them in a bid for an Ijaw candidate to emerge.

There has been a silent but palpable war between the Ibori political family, which Governor Okowa used to belong, and new groups budding around Okowa, which is threatening the unity of the ruling party in the state.

The fight is over which group should produce the candidate of the PDP going into the primaries of the party, and preparatory to the 2023 general elections.

While Chief Ibori has made his choice known in the person of Olorogun David Edevbie, Governor Okowa despite public statements to the contrary, TNG had earlier reported from reliable sources close to the governor, that his choice is the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori or an aspirant endorsed by Tompolo.

The choice of the Governor has pitched him against his former boss, who prefers Edevbie, who has also been endorsed by the apex sociocultural organisation of the Urhobo nation, the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU).

Nevertheless, the endorsement of Edevbie by the UPU has also torn the apex Urhobo sociocultural organisation apart as members of the Union on different sides of the divide have not taken the endorsement kindly.

Following the endorsement, National Legal Adviser of UPU, Chief Isaacs Itebu, who himself is a strong promoter of Oborevwori, moved to rebuke the President General of the Union, Olorogun Moses Taiga.

The expectations of many Deltans is that the governorship should rotate back to Delta Central Senatorial District. There are also calls that it should be micro-zoned to the Okpe, Sapele, Uvwie Federal Constituency that has never produced a governor or deputy governor in the state.

Some see this as the reason the immediate past Commissioner for Works, Chief James Augoye, who was until recently a favoured guber aspirant, was prevailed upon to drop his ambition and instead embrace a position in the State House of Assembly.

A source told TNG that after observing the situation in the party, some leaders of the party in the state, in a move to avoid the party losing the State to the All Progressives Congress (APC), invited the national leadership of the party to intervene in the matter.

“We cannot deny anymore and continue to deceive ourselves that there is no problem in our party. There is a big problem in the PDP of Delta State, of which, if not addressed meticulously ahead of the primaries, our party would be left in shreds for the opposition to take over,” a leader who sought anonymity noted.

Delta Assembly approves Okowa’s request for N150bn credit facility

The Delta State House of Assembly on Tuesday approved a request by Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa for a bridging finance facility of N150 billion in favour of the State government.

Governor Okowa’s request was contained in a letter which was read at plenary of the assembly by the Speaker, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori in Asaba.

Okowa said: the requested credit facility which has Zenith Bank PLC as the “lead arranger, would be principally tailored toward defraying arrears of unpaid certificates earned by contractors with respect to completion of some critical ongoing legacy projects awarded by past and present administrations in the state.

The governor also said that part of the loan would be tailored toward taking care of outstanding pension commitments to the state and local government areas pensions in the contributory pension scheme, amounting to N20 billion and N10 billion respectively.

“The speaker and members of the state house of assembly, I wish to inform you that the state is expecting refund from the Federal Government, being Petroleum Subsidy Payments made without recourse to the 13 per cent derivation due to oil producing states from January 1999 to Nov. 30, 2021.

“Delta state’s portion in this regard amounted to N270.6 billion.

“Bearing in mind the administration’s resolve to finish strong, it is necessary for the state to capitalise on the refund to defray arrears of unpaid certificates earned by contractors with respect to completion of some critical ongoing legacy projects awarded by past and present administrations” the governor said.

Consequently, the motion for the approval of the credit facility was moved by the Majority leader of the assembly, Chief Ferguson Onwo.

The motion which was unanimously adopted by the house of assembly when put to a voice vote by the speaker, was seconded by the Chief Whip, Mrs Pat Ajudua.

  • 2023: Gov Okowa speaks on who will succeed him

2023: Gov Okowa speaks on who will succeed him

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta says he is committed to allowing God’s will to prevail on the choice of who will succeed him in 2023.

Okowa stated this at the 70th birth anniversary and thanksgiving service of Chief Oritsetimeyin Adams at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area.

The governor said that he was not willing to lord himself on the people but would rather allow the will of God to provide the people with a worthy successor as governor.

He commended the church and other leaders for their prayers and support, and urged them to pray that God should provide the state with a worthy person that would succeed him as a governor.

“The choice of a successor is not by wish of man but by the will of God.

“I thank the Church and our leaders for their consistent prayers for our dear state because it is not about us, but about what God wants.

“So, pray that whoever God wants will be the governor and may that person emerge as governor for the good of the people of Delta.

“May God’s will be done in Delta State and may it be well with us in Nigeria,” he said.

Okowa congratulated the celebrator for attaining the Biblical three scores and 10 and urged him to rededicate his life to the service of God and humanity.

“God is the source of life and therefore, we must return all thanks to Him and that is what you have done today.

“I knew Chief Adams way back in 1991 when we were council chairmen; he was in the NRC and I was in the SDP and we became friends since then.

“I thank God that today also he continued to remember the things that God had enabled him to do.

“He is now one of our elder statesmen not because of his age but because of his contributions to the development of our state,” he stated.

Earlier in his sermon, Bishop of Oleh Diocese (Anglican Communion), Rt. Rev’d John Aruakpor, congratulated Adams for using his positions to attract development to his people.

The bishop said that every celebration was a day to look back and give thanks to God for His grace upon our lives.

He added that the grace of God had helped the celebrant all through his life.

Speaking on the topic: “The value of man’s life”, Aruakpor said that a man’s worth did not consist in the abundance of his possessions but by the value of service he rendered to others.

According to him, God does not measure man’s worth by the number of years lived but by how much impact we made on the lives of others.

“When the Lord places man in a position of authority, it is not for the person in particular but to better the lots of others.

“If you want to have value in the sight of God, put God first, obey His ways and He will not disappoint you,” the clergy said.

On his part, the celebrator said he was not thanking God because he was 70 but because of His blessings upon his life and family.

“I am not just thanking God because I am 70, but because of what God did for me last year.

“Last year, I was diagnosed with prostrate cancer which was supposed to be a death sentence but the Lord healed me after an operation in a United States hospital.

“I must thank God for our dear Governor, Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa and my amiable king, His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, for their support towards the surgery,” Adams said.

Delta to terminate Mosogar electricity contract – Okowa

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta on Friday said that the state government may terminate the contract of the electricity supply project awarded to Mosogar, Ethiope West Local Government Area of the state.

Okowa stated this in Mosogar during the funeral rites of the Ovie of Mosogar, Samson Imoyin-Omene, Udurhie I.

The governor said that the project may be terminated over poor performance of the contractor.

Okowa said that he was disturbed to hear that the project had continued to suffer unnecessary delay on account of the ineptitude of the contractor.

He said that the state government would take steps to terminate and re-award the electricity project to a more competent contractor.

The governor assured residents of Mosogar community of the government’s support towards rehabilitation of its internal roads.

“Let me say that I am dissapointed to hear that the project has continued to suffer delay after my approval.

“If after one year plus and the project is still not delivered then it truly deserves to be terminated.

“Let me assure you that we will deal with the issue,” he said.

Okowa paid glowing tribute to the late king, describing him as a humble leader who cared for the growth and development of his Kingdom.

“The late Udurhie I was truly a very humble man who was so much concerned about the development of his kingdom.

“Truly, his humility was such that it attracted everyone who came close to him and that is what is expected of us, especially when we find ourselves in positions of power.

“On behalf of my family, the government and people of Delta, we condole with the family and the entire kingdom on the passing of their beloved father and king.

“From what I have seen here today, the people of Mosogar truly loved their king and it is our prayer that his soul will continue to rest in peace,” Okowa said.

In his address of welcome, the traditional prime minister and Otota of Mosogar Kingdom, Chief Ighoyota Amori, said the funeral symbolises the end and the beginning of a new era in the kingdom as preparation into the future for the enthronement of a new king.

He said the kingdom was founded in 2006 with Udurhie I, the first ever king presented with staff of office in 2007.

He urged the state government to terminate and re-award the contract for the 2.5MVA Transformer to energise the Mosogar electricity network.

The funeral was attended by former governors of the state, Chief James Ibori, and Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, members of the National and State House of Assembly, among other dignitaries.

  • Delta 2023: The Edevbie factor – By Azuka Osiegbu

Delta 2023: The Edevbie factor – By Azuka Osiegbu

    By Azuka Osiegbu

The race to succeed Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State is turning out to be an epic contest. Less than two months to the conduct of the primaries, going by the timetable fixed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), no fewer than 10 persons have picked the nomination forms in the PDP, which has governed the state since 1999 and holds the aces in the 2023 election in the state. Some of the names, including that of Kenneth Gbagi, a veteran contender, are certainly well regarded. However, Delta State, like much of Nigeria, needs someone who is not only well known, but has both a proven record of performance and demonstrable capacity, to move the state forward.

With a debt profile of N207 billion as at December 2021, unemployment at 24.1 percent as at 2020, and diminishing revenues, the challenges are not a walk-in-the-park. Though, Delta State may seem to be doing better than most states in Nigeria, many of which receive far less in national income allocation.

Beyond statistics, a cursory visit to the state tells you that there’s much to be done by whoever becomes the next governor for the state to grow and attain a pride of place. It is therefore not a period to settle for a same-of-the-same kind of leadership that only thinks of sharing the money. To use the much acclaimed words of Peter Obi, there’s nothing more to share!

Over the last 23 years since the return to democracy, Delta State has had three governors whose focus has been on providing infrastructure and opening up the villages and creeks. Beginning from Chief James Ibori in 1999 through Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan and to the roadmaster, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, the emphasis on opening up the hinterland through roads and bridges have been well received by the people. There is still some more to do and we must begin to talk about wealth creation through economic empowerment plans, industrial estates and making our cities more liveable.

The next governor must therefore have the requisite skills to meet the expectations of the people for jobs and wealth creation, in addition to an efficient administration. The state needs fresh thinking where job creation goes beyond the regular appointment of politicians to offices but in expanding opportunities for the people to create businesses and jobs. This is where the list of the contenders for the top job then withers and we can begin to sift the wheat from the chaff. In this instance Olorogun David Edevbie stands out like a shining star. Edevbie is the factor in the 2023 Delta State governorship race within and outside the PDP.

As someone I have known and interacted with over the years, Edevbie is light years ahead of the pack. I like to call him a public-private technocrat given his broad experience across both sectors. His attention to detail, knack for parsimonious planning and focus on achieving set goals combines with a detribalised nature to present a model governor for a modern state. He will certainly take Delta State to new heights.

It is not difficult to see why Edevbie fits like a round peg in a round hole. At 58 he has not just age on his side but the benefit of the wisdom of years. He is also well educated and comes with a diverse set of skills. He was educated at the University of Lagos where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and at Cardiff Business School, University of Wales. He is also a graduate of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and Chartered Institute of Bankers (UK). His broad technocratic experience covers investment banking and development economics. Before his foray into politics with his appointment as Finance Commissioner in 1999 he was Deputy Country Head, Philippines, for the Commonwealth Development Corporation. He has held several other positions and attended several other trainings.

With a rich experience as a development economist, international banker and public sector manager, Olorogun Edevbie comes prepared for the job. Add to this his robust experience across Delta State and at Abuja where he has served at various times as Principal Secretary (Chief of Staff equivalent) to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Finance commissioner under Governors Ibori, Uduaghan and Okowa and Chief of Staff to Governor Okowa at various times in the past 23 years, one can safely say Edevbie understands the issues of development in Delta State, especially where to dot the i’s and cross the t’s.

It is no wonder therefore that Edevbie has laid out a robust agenda as he campaigns across the state. As he states so convincingly, “My industrialisation plan aims to make the State a massive production and manufacturing hub underpinned by domestic and foreign direct investment anchored on public and private partnerships. The strategy involves enacting investor-friendly legislation and providing requisite infrastructure, including reliable electricity and suitable road and transportation networks for industrial clusters to be set up across the State.”

As part of his promise to complete the Aboh-Ogwashi Agro-Processing Park, his government would also see to the completion of the Isele-Ukwu – Isele Mkpitime – Onicha Olona – Akwukwu Igbo – Ugbolu to Asaba rural express way, to ease evacuation of agricultural produce coming out of those Delta North communities. This is addition to his promise of also completing the Kwale Industrial Parks initiated by the current administration and the Warri Industrial Business Park initiated by the Uduaghan administration, all these would run simultaneously with the fast-tracking into operation of the Jesse Industrial.

According to Edevbie “The private sector will be encouraged to set up solid minerals mining and beneficiation industries to exploit marble, glass-sand, clay, gypsum, iron ore and kaolin, which abound in the State.”

Lastly, he has a vision to improve security, without which investment will not thrive in the state. His strategy is a technology driven security architecture.

Therefore, In electing Edevbie to succeed Okowa, the PDP and Delta State will be putting their best foot forward. There can be no better time to elect a technocrat who understands the nexus between wealth creation and social intervention.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Okowa has anointed Oborevwori as his successor – Aide

EXCLUSIVE: Okowa has anointed Oborevwori as his successor – Aide

Despite strenuous denial that Delta State Governor, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa has not anointed any candidate for the gubernatorial flag of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), indications are emerging that the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori is his favoured aspirant to succeed him.

A very reliable top source close to Governor Okowa, who nonetheless wants his name out of print, for now, has revealed.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the source revealed that Governor Okowa after wide consultation and consideration has settled on Oborevwori as his preferred candidate to be the gubernatorial flagbearer of the PDP for the Delta State 2023 governorship election.

The choice of Oborevwori by Okowa may have foreclosed the aspiration of other members of the PDP, including the immediate past commissioner for works of the State, Chief James Augoye, who has dropped his guber ambition and opted to contest for a seat in the State House of Assembly instead.

Other frontrunners in the PDP, who may have had their aspirations hampered as a result are Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi, Senator James Manager, Barr. Kingsley Otuaro and Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, some of whom have already secured the nomination form of the PDP for the 2023 governorship election.

According to the source, Oborevwori is now poised to slug it out for the votes of delegates as Governor’s choice at the PDP governorship primaries that will hold later in the year. He will slug it out with Olorogun David Edevbie, who is former Governor James Ibori’s preferred candidate.

“Yes, I can confirm to you that the die is cast. The Speaker is Governor’s choice, but our leader [referring to former Governor James Ibori] and the Governor have not been able to reach a common ground.

“So, what we are going to see is that Oborevwori and Edevbie will go head to head for the 2023 governorship ticket of the PDP in the primaries,” the source told TNG.

However, the source declined to accept that the adoption of Oborevwori by Okowa has precluded any member of the party that is interested in the governorship ticket from contesting. Our source stressed that it only means that those aspirants have no backing whatsoever.

“No one can be deprived of contesting for the governorship ticket of the PDP. The primaries will be open to all and transparent in accordance with the rules of the party. It is free for all even as Governor Okowa has promised.

“And of course, the Governor has the right to go for the aspirant of his choice. It only means that other aspirants do not have backing whatsoever. But the primaries will be free, transparent and fair,” the source disclosed.

2023: Augoye drops out of guber race, opts for House of Assembly

Meanwhile, indications have also emerged that the immediate past commissioner for works of Delta State, Chief James Augoye has dropped his ambition to contest the 2023 governorship election of the State.

TNG reliably gathered that Chief Augoye dropped the ambition of contesting the 2023 gubernatorial polls after meeting with Governor Okowa, and opted to contest for a seat in the Delta State House of Assembly, following negotiations with the governor.

It was also reliably gathered that after the meeting with Okowa, it became obvious that the Governor has had his mind fixed on the Speaker of the State House of Assembly as his choice aspirant for the governorship election.

“Actually, Augoye had always been in the picture. But with Okowa’s meeting with him very recently, it became more obvious that he is not the Governor’s choice.

“He is left to go for the House of Assembly if he so wishes to go for an elective position. Since there is no strong contender for the Okpe State Constituency, it was advisable for him to seek to be elected in that capacity.

“But, as I have said, the governorship race is an open field for all aspirants to contest. Any aspirant who wants to throw his or her hat in the ring is allowed to do so. No one is barred from contesting the PDP governorship primaries,” the source told TNG.

  • What Gov. Okowa said about passing of Grace Alele-Williams

What Gov. Okowa said about passing of Grace Alele-Williams

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has extended his condolences to the family of renowned mathematician and Nigeria’s first female Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Grace Alele-Williams, who died on Friday.

Alele-Williams died in Lagos. She was aged 89 years. Okowa, in a condolence message by his Chief Press Secretary, Olisa Ifeajika, on Saturday in Asaba, said that late Alele-Williams was a great role model to the female gender, which she inspired with her brilliance and diligence.

The governor joined family members, the academia and the Itsekiri nation, in mourning the renowned scholar and administrator, who in 1963 earned a doctorate degree and became the first Nigerian female to attain such academic height.

“On behalf of the government and people of Delta, I condole with the deceased’s family, the academia, the Itsekiri nation and people of Delta, on the passing of the renowned mathematician and scholar, Prof. Grace Alele-Williams.

“We received the news of her passing with shock, but thank God she lived a life of great impact.

“She was a great role model and worked assiduously to stamp out cultism at the University of Benin, where she was Vice-Chancellor,” Okowa said.

He noted that the late scholar’s drive and love for knowledge earned her many recognitions and awards in Nigeria and across the globe.

“Prof. Alele-Williams was an illustrious daughter of Delta, and only recently, we honoured her and other illustrious people of the state during the state’s 30th anniversary celebration.

“She would be greatly missed by those whose lives she impacted and inspired in very many ways,” Okowa said.

The governor prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed professor, and for God to comfort her family.
