  • Ifeanyi Ubah Dumps Ndubuisi Nwobu, Woos Arthur Eze to Bankroll Campaign

Ifeanyi Ubah Dumps Ndubuisi Nwobu, Woos Arthur Eze to Bankroll Campaign

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) candidate for the 2021 Anambra guber election, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, has reportedly perfected plans to get business tycoon and CEO of Atlas Oranto Petroleum, Prince Arthur Eze, to fund his governorship election campaign.

According to inside sources close to Senator Ubah, plans to announce Dr Okey Eze, Prince Arthur Eze’s brother, as his running mate ahead of the November 6 poll are in top gear. The move is seen as a plot to get the billionaire oil magnate to bankroll the campaign as he (Sen. Ubah) is neck-deep in debt and has been unable to raise funds to match the demands of financing his Anambra State Governorship election.

One source, who craved anonymity, said the Senator sees this as an opportunity to repair his already-dented image and buy public sympathy with Prince Eze’s money and image.

The move also comes as a blow to the ambition of the embattled Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) State Chairman, Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu (Obuka Awka), to decamp and emerge as Senator Ubah’s running mate.

“Ifeanyi Ubah’s plan with Obuka has fallen through the cracks. You know he will always go for the highest bidder, and right now, he sees Arthur Eze as a suitable moneybag to fund his campaign,” our source, an old-time politician, said.

“Initially, Senator Ubah saw Nwobu as an opportunity to get some money and the pockets of followers that might follow him from the PDP, but with the kind of debts he currently has, only a wealthy godfather can give him a fighting chance in the election.”

Further investigation reveals that Prince Arthur Eze is not interested in funding a campaign that will fail after the bitter experiences of bankrolling two unsuccessful campaigns for Chief Tony Nwoye with the PDP in 2013 and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2017.

A personal aide to Arthur Eze, who spoke to under codition of anonimity on the development, disclosed that his boss no longer wishes to gamble his money with politics and politicians, especially on a small party that will not win the election.

“Oga (Prince Arthur Eze) is aware of the rumour, but I’m sure he will accept Ifeanyi Ubah’s proposition. After 2013 and 2017, he has told anyone who cares to listen that he will not put his money in politics again,” the aide stated.

Another highly-ranked politician who is privy to the development said the entire plan reeks of desperation and will spell political doom for Senator Ubah.

“Ifeanyi Ubah is unnecessarily desperate for power. He is drowning in debts, and instead of him to find a way to clear his name, pay his workers their salaries that he has been owing for some time now, he is attempting to reintroduce godfatherism into Anambra politics, something the people have since rejected,” he remarked, angrily.

Anambra: Ubah emerges YPP governorship candidate

The Senator representing Anambra South senatorial district in the National Assembly, Ifeanyi Ubah, has emerged the candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) for the forthcoming November 6 governorship election in Anambra State.

Speaking to journalists shortly after he was declared the party’s candidate at YPP national headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, Ubah allayed the fears of Nigerians that the South-East crisis would disrupt the governorship election

Ubah said the current insecurity in the region would not affect the conduct of the poll and that his party would emerge victoriously.

Ubah noted that the party was not behind the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the state, contrary to insinuations in some quarters.

“If other parties are having crisis, it means their processes are not right. As you can see in YPP, we are moving with the speed of light,” he said.

He recalled that YPP gave APGA and PDP a hot chase and came out victorious during the Anambra South senatorial election in the state.

”I am representing my constituency well in the Senate. My Bill for Deep Offshore is giving Nigeria above N700 billion annually.

“We are unique in YPP and Anambra will see a new rave of hope. We are expecting a smooth election and ready to take over the governorship seat in Anambra,” he said.

  • Alleged 11bn oil scam: Ifeanyi Ubah sues DSS, seeks release from custody

Alleged 11bn oil scam: Ifeanyi Ubah sues DSS, seeks release from custody

The Managing Director of Capital Oil and Gas Limited, Ifeanyi Ubah, has sued the Department of State Services , DSS, before the Federal High Court in Lagos over what he termed unlawful detention by the security agency.

Ubah’s lawyer, Mrs. Ifeoma Esom, who appeared before Justice Mohammed Idris on Tuesday with an ex parte application, claimed that her client had been in detention since May 6.

She urged the judge to order the DSS to release Ubah to prevent the security agency from coercing him to accede to “whatever conditions they impose on him in exchange for his freedom.”

Upon hearing the ex parte application on Tuesday, Justice Idris ordered the DSS to bring Ubah before him on May 12, 2017, to show cause why the businessman should not be released unconditionally.

In an affidavit filed in support of the application, the Secretary of Capital Oil and Gas Limited,George Oranuba, claimed that the DSS arrested his boss on account of allegations levelled against him by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria.

According to Oranuba, the issue had become a subject of litigation and was already before the court.

Oranuba, however, said despite the subsisting suit, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the DSS still invited Ubah for questioning.

According to him, Ubah had earlier been detained from March 24 to April 14, 2017.

The DSS had claimed that it arrested and detained Ubah for what it termed an act of “economic sabotage” involving an alleged diversion of petroleum products worth about N11bn.

The DSS claimed that the said petroleum products, belonging to NNPC Retail, stored in the Capital Oil farm in Lagos, went missing under controversial circumstances.

However, the company secretary, Oranuba, said the agreement leading to the keeping of the petroleum product with Capital Oil, allowed “conversion and diversion of IT products by operators as long as the operator is prepared to re-deliver the products within seven days of demand by the owner of the product or to pay a penalty for non-re-delivery.”

According to him, failure to re-deliver did not amount to a crime but is a mere breach of contract, which can be remedied by payment of a penalty to the owner.

“The agreement expressly states that any penalty due for non-re-delivery is to be treated as a debt and I verily believe that law enforcement agencies are not allowed to operate as debt collectors,” he said.

Oranuba claimed that NNPC is indebted to Capital Oil and Gas Limited in “excess of N13bn yet the company did not call law enforcement agencies to collect the debt, despite the length of time NNPC has held on to the money.”
