  • Ned Nwoko to Anioma people: “We are all Igbos”

Ned Nwoko to Anioma people: “We are all Igbos”

Senator Ned Nwoko (APC-Delta North) has called on Anioma people in Delta State to embrace their Igbo identity.

Nwoko also called on them to join hands with Nigerians from the Eastern part of the country in building a stronger and more united Nigeria.

Nwoko, according to his Media Directorate, was said to have made the call in Asaba at a conference organised by the Unification Movement.

The conference, with the theme ‘Igbo Bu Ofu” (Igbos are One)’, was held in collaboration with the Ndi na Asu Bia Socio-Cultural Organisation,

The Igbo Unification Movement and Ndi na Asu Bia have in recent years become strong advocacy platforms championing the cultural, historical, and political unity of Igbo-speaking communities across Nigeria, including Anioma (Delta north senatorial district), Igbanke in Edo, and other border areas.

The groups stated that reclaiming a collective Igbo identity was crucial to political strength, cultural revival, and correcting decades of identity distortion.

The lawmaker, while commending the organisers for their courage and vision, said that their efforts aligned with his long-standing philosophy on Anioma identity and the need for an Anioma State to be carved out of Delta North.

“There is no argument about our Igbo identity. I understand history very well. I have a degree in history. I know the migration of the Igbo people, and I know clearly that we, the Anioma, are Igbo.

“The time has come for us to reverse the old narratives that separated us from our brothers across the Niger,” he said.

Nwoko, who had sponsored a motion for the creation of an Anioma State in the National Assembly, said the agitation was not about politics or personal ambition, but about correcting historical imbalances.

According to him, his dream is for an Ndokwa son or daughter to emerge as the first Governor of Anioma State, when it is created.

“This is not about APC, PDP, or Labour Party; it is about identity, justice, and fairness. I have no interest in being governor, but I want Anioma to stand tall with its own state, with Asaba as its capital.

“That way, we also fulfill the dream of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, which has always recognised Anioma as one of the Igbo states,” he said.

Recalling his childhood experience during the Nigerian civil war, he said, identity crisis from that era must now give way to truth and reconciliation.

He lauded academics and activists, including Prof. Abigail Ogwezzy of the University of Lagos, whose research on Anioma linguistics and history had shed light on the people’s Igbo roots.

The Senator highlighted the wider significance of the gathering, saying, “The Igbo man is Igbo everywhere, whether from Delta, Imo, or Abia.

“Just like a Chinese man remains Chinese anywhere in the world, Anioma must rise to embrace its identity. That is the only way we can achieve unity and political relevance.”

He urged the Igbo Unification Movement, Ndi na Asu Bia, and other cultural organisations to continue their advocacy, education, and mobilisation.

Nwoko stressed that only through such collective efforts can the dream of a united Igbo nation and the creation of Anioma State be realised.

  • Ijaws fume over claim Rivers is 6th Igbo state

Ijaws fume over claim Rivers is 6th Igbo state

The Ijaw National Congress (INC) Worldwide has advised some people of Rivers to avoid statements capable of causing ethnic crisis in the state.

Chief Ezonebi Oyakemeagbegha, National Publicity Secretary, INC Worldwide, gave the advice in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Oyakemeagbegha, said his advice follows assertions in some quarters that Rivers is the 6th Igbo state. He said the statement was misleading as it did not reflect the true situation in Rivers.

He said the fact that an Ikwerre indigene emerged the president-general of  `faction’ of Ohaneze Worldwide did not confer the status of 6th Igbo state on Rivers as claimed by one Ikwerre indigene.

“The INC ordinarily would not have responded to such reports if not for the fact that such publications can mislead the gullible reading public.

“For the education of our people and the entire reading public, the INC wishes to state categorically, that Rivers, as currently populated cannot be referred to as an Igbo state.

“Rivers population currently has more than 50 per cent as Ijaws. There are also other ethnic nationalities like Ogoni, Ekpeye, and Eleme.

“Concede that there are people within the lkwerre ethnic nationality who trace their origin to the Igbo ethnic nationality.

“The fact still remains that they are infinitesimal as some historians within the same Ikwerre ethnic nationality are daily disputing their ties to the Igbos,” he said.

He said similarly, it would be unjust for Ijaw nation to claim ownership of states by mere fact that such states contain Ijaw population.

“For the sake of clarity, the fact that Ijaw exists in states like Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Abia does not make such states Ijaw states.

“Also that Prof. Benjamin Okaba, the President of INC is from Delta, does not automatically convert it to Ijaw state.

“Ijaws lay claim only to Bayelsa as an Ijaw state simply because it is predominately occupied by the Ijaws. The fact of geography, history and ethnic web does not lie.

“Ijaws are not ready to concede any inch of their land to anybody. For those who have little flair for history, ljaws are known never to bow to anybody,’’ Oyakemeagbegha said.

He recalled that ljaw people have a history as the only ethnic nationality that was never conquered by the colonialists. He, therefore, said INC would continue to resist any attempt to annex an ancestral land of the Ijaw people.

    2027: It’s Igbo’s turn to become President – ACC

The Allied Conservative Congress (ACC) has advocated for the zoning of presidency to the Southeast region of Nigeria in 2027.

The political group believed that this move would promote national unity.

During the inauguration of the Abia State executives in Umuahia, the ACC Chairman, Olusegun Peters, emphasized that the Igbo people have not had the opportunity to produce a Nigerian President since the tragic assassination of former head of state, General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, on July 29, 1966.

Peters, represented by the ACC National Vice Chairman for the Northwest, Ibrahim Abdullahi, pointed out that in the 25 years since the restoration of democracy, no individual from the Igbo ethnic group has held the presidency, while both the North and South West have each had two terms in office.

He affirmed that the party is committed to fairness and will actively support the equitable distribution of power among Nigeria’s three principal ethnic groups: Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba.

Abdullahi further characterized the Igbo as a hardworking community and expressed optimism that the current economic challenges facing the nation could be effectively addressed through the innovative capabilities of an Igbo leader.

During the inauguration of the new Abia executives, the National Party Chairman emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration among the State Working Committee (SWC).

He highlighted that the party is committed to representing the interests of all Nigerians, regardless of their religious, ethnic, or educational backgrounds.

In their separate addresses, the National Vice Chairman for North-Central, Hon. Illya Juan, the National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Abubakar Sadiq, and the National Vice Chairman for South-East, Vincent Eberechukwu, extended their congratulations to the newly inaugurated executives for their dedication, expressing optimism that they would guide the party to success in the forthcoming elections.

In his address, the acting State Chairman of the ACC, Onyekachi Uwalaka, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in the new state executive and assured that the party would be strategically positioned to secure governorship and legislative victories in Abia by 2027.

  • Ohanaeze warns Igbos against joining Planned nationwide protest

Ohanaeze warns Igbos against joining Planned nationwide protest

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has called on  Igbos to refrain from joining the planned nationwide protest against President Bola Tinubu’s government.

Ohanaeze said the planned nationwide protest is an outcome of the current hardship in Nigeria which is “the comeuppance of Igbophobia”.

It would be recalled  popular activist, Omoyele Sowore had urged Nigerians to file out on August 1 to protest against the hardship and current state of the nation.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo made its position on the protest known in a statement released on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alex Ogbonnia.

The statement reads, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo seizes this opportunity to reiterate our position with respect to the widely publicized nationwide protest scheduled for the days of August, 2024.

“On February, 20, 2024, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Engr. Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, MFR; OFR; CFR; FNICE; FNSE; FNIST; KSG (Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo) directed the Igbo not to join in the protest against President Bola Tinubu.

“The Igbo Leader explained that “Igbo youths and youths from other ethnic groups at various times expressed their dissatisfaction with events in the country. It is clear to us that when youths from other tribes of the country are involved, they are reprimanded and forgiven; but when the Igbo youths are involved they are arrested, incarcerated and even charged for serious offences. For example, the arrest and detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu generated a lot of problems for the Igbos” amongst others.

“Emphatically, the current hardship in Nigeria is the comeuppance of Igbophobia. It is an unavoidable outcome of an orchestrated injustice, marginalization, callous conspiracies, corporate shenanigans and ethnic bigotry against the Igbo.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo stands on a firm wicket based on reason, history and experience, to state that “there can never be peace, progress and national development when there is a deliberate government policy of injustice, tantrums and brimstones against a vibrant, capacious, resourceful, resilient and populous ethnic group such as the Igbo.

“On Saturday, March 25, 2023, during the occasion of one year in Office of Professor Chukwuma Soludo, the Governor of Anambra State, the former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo condemned the persistent aversion to the people of southeastern extraction, which he described as Igbophobia. Obasanjo added that unless Nigeria throws its doors open to merit and full inclusion of the Igbo in national affairs, the country will continue to flounder and grope in the dark.

“Finally, the Igbo are once again requested not to join the forthcoming nationwide protest. When President Muhammadu Buhari appointed about 15 service chiefs in Nigeria and Igbo was secluded, did the lopsided policy abate the security situation in Nigeria? And have we died? And many more? It was Robert Schuller who posited that “Tough times never last but tough people do.”

  • Igbo Journalists Association disowns factional Ohanaeze led by Chief Chidi Ibe

Igbo Journalists Association disowns factional Ohanaeze led by Chief Chidi Ibe

The Igbo Journalists Association (IJA), an affiliate to Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, disowns an amorphous group that goes by the name Ohanaeze being led by one Chief Chidi Ibe, as the president general and a certain Okechukwu Isiguzoro, as its secretary.

The leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide is not either unknown or under threat and it is not meant for serving politicians. Those who also, attain the position of president general and secretary general are people of proven integrity in society who had served their fatherland in different high profile capacities in the past. Their emergence is through laid down electoral procedures.

We, the members of the IJA, hereby strongly notify the general public that the only Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, which is the apex Igbo socio -political organization with adequate representation at the executive arm by all the Igbo-speaking states of the nation, remains our father and encyclopedia at all times, indefatigable Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, as the president general and Ambassador Okey Emuchay, as the secretary general.

For the umpteenth time, the general public is advised to disregard any false information peddled by this non- recognised faction of Ohanaeze led by Chidi Ibe, as there is no division, faction or disunity among the Igbo as regards the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

One wonders the gain these swindlers benefit from causing disharmony in Igboland by always deceiving the public by dishing out false alarm in order to create panic, misinformation and disinformation in the public space.

IJA therefore, advises her members scattered in all the relevant media organizations in the country and abroad, to desist from giving visibility, space and voice to this criminally-minded group that uses the name of Ohanaeze to swindle the unsuspecting public.

The issue of the authenticity of those competently and currently occupying the positions of the president general, general secretary and other positions, leading the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide until the next election of the apex Igbo body is conducted, as enshrined in the Constitution of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, is not in doubt. Also, it is pertinent to clarify here that the Constitution of the body provides for the eligibility of each elected serving leader to re- contest for a second term, if he or she desires.

It is not in doubt that the rotation of the Iwuanyanwu -led Ohanaeze Ndigbo WorldWide positions, especially, the president general and secretary general of the body is sacrosanct among the seven Igbo-speaking States that make -up the body (Rivers, Anambra, Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Delta and Enugu), as well as those in the diaspora.

We, appeal to all our people to support the leadership of Chief E.C. Iwuanyanwu (Ahaejiagamba of Igboland), who in his brief moment of taking over from the late Ambassador (Prof.) George Obiozor, as the president general of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has demonstrated capacity and great leadership acumen by taking the message of Ndigbo Worldwide to the world, even to the admiration of other nationalities.

We, the members of the IJA, commend Chief Iwuanyanwu and his leadership team, urging the executive to continue promoting peace, unity, progress and development of our dear Igboland.

    Signed:
    Hon. (Sir) Amby Uneze
    National President

Group calls for support, funding to promote Igbo language

Non-governmental organization (NGO), has called for support and funding for the promotion of Igbo language and culture worldwide.

Mazi Ikechukwu Ọjị, Executive Director of Igbo Efula, made the call while speaking in Enugu on Thursday on practical ways to improve usage of Igbo language and culture.

Oji stressed the need for the government and other stakeholders to support the business of all those who earn a living from the Igbo language and culture.

According to him, such industries and endeavors included: Igbo teachers, Igbo journalists/writers, publishers, Igbo Nollywood practitioners, those selling Igbo arts and artifacts among others.

“This remains the most practical way of promoting Igbo language and culture,” he said.

Oji also encouraged mothers and women, who spend more time with children at home, to focus on speaking Igbo language and ensuring that children clearly understood the language from the cradle.

He said: “A language is a living thing and only dies when it is no longer being used effectively, especially for productive and commercial purposes.

“If our Igbo language usage professionals and others are supported and encouraged; they will be in a better position to give their best towards the sustenance and promotion of Igbo language.”

No Igbo will become president, Obi missed it – Primate Ayodele

The leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has said the South-East cannot produce the Nigerian president even in 2027.

He stated that the Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi missed the chance to become the president.

Ayodele disclosed this in a statement by his media aide, Oluwatosin Osho.

“Peter Obi’s matter to the Supreme Court is dead on arrival; he can’t win the case and won’t be President of Nigeria.

“His case will be thrown out. Obi would have won the election, but he didn’t do the right thing at the appropriate time.

“This is just medicine after death, a waste of money and resources. The people pushing Obi are spiritually blindfolded.

“The person that is on the presidential seat is more powerful than Obi spiritually. Even in 2027, no Igbo will become president; Obi has missed it,” he said.
