2023: Why an Igbo candidate can’t be trusted – Joe Igbokwe

Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that an Igbo candidate cannot be trusted in the coming presidential election.

The APC chieftain who is also a special adviser to the Lagos State government said nobody would vote for somebody who would use the position to divide Nigeria. He said these during an interview on Thursday.

However, he noted that the South East region of the country has suffered injustice, noting that they get the least from resources shared in the country.

He also said killings and violent agitations were not ways to press for justice, equity and fairness.

He urged the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to facilitate the creation of one more state to make states in the South-East six like other geopolitical zones in Nigeria.

Nnamdi Kanu does not speak for Igbo nation
While speaking, the special adviser who touched several topic noted that Igbo people must drop agitation for secession to be considered for serious national offices.

“If you want other Nigerians to vote for you, then you have to count how many bridges that you have built; bridges of understanding, bridges of communication, bridges of friendship.

“I want to see your bridges and you want them to vote for you? Nobody is going to vote for somebody who will use that position to divide Nigeria.

“You cannot be talking about secession and talking about producing the President of Nigeria. We need to settle the issue first; we need to say, ‘Look, we have given up this demand for Biafra, grant us justice,” he said.

Ohanaeze speaks against IPOB’s activities, says Igbos mustn’t perish in violence

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Monday, called for stoppage of anarchy in Igbo land to attract development in the southeast.

Amb George Obiozo, president general of Ohanaeza Ndigbo Worldwide, made this demand ahead of the annual celebration of the Igbo Day on 29th September 2021.

According to Obiozor, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, traditional rulers and stakeholders call for an end towards anarchy in Igbo land. Our youths, particularly the leaders of IPOB, should take notice of the danger violence has posed in Igbo land.

“Ndigbo must avoid being a race that has voluntarily chosen to perish in violence and insecurity, and we must stop threatening ourselves. There must be a stop to violence and violence rhetoric. Something other than the initial objectives of IPOB is taking place and it is dangerous.

“Today, what we see in Igbo land is not liberation, but Ala Igbo destruction and devastation. It is a national tragedy for the Igbo. The liberty and freedom of Ndigbo are threatened internally and externally. I call on IPOB leaders to reassert the authority and control of the organization.

“To our son Nnamdi Kanu himself, what good is it to have the greatest dream in the world, if others reap the benefit and glory. In history, there is only a thin line between a hero and a villain. The greatest tragedy for any leader in history is to end up from a hero to a villain.

“Ndigbo must think again which way forward. Our disgust must be directed at leaders and fellow citizens, who do not want Ndigbo to become emancipated like themselves as Nigerian citizens.

“What Ndigbo want is that we should become a light unto the world, like all good people in the world ought to be. That was precisely part of my critical message to President Muhammadu Buhari during his official visit to Imo State.

“For Ndigbo, there must be evidence of increasing sense of belonging, equity, and justice for Ndigbo. Consequently, we thank Mr President for his appointment to our son, Senator Ifeanyi Ararume, and our daughter, Mrs Okadigbo, as chairman and member of the NNPC board respectively.

“We repeat our preference for dialogue instead of violence or military solutions to national problems. The dialogue should not be delayed further. For Ndigbo, the demand is simple: that the Nigerian federation should be sustained and have a sense of stability. It must be a union of equals, and the composite units must have the ability to survive without begging the centre.

“We must tell ourselves the truth or keep deceiving ourselves by ignoring the calls for decentralization and devolution of power in Nigeria. Ironically, in history, societies where truth comes last, tragedy comes first. We must learn the lessons of history, particularly our own Nigerian history on how the story began. Nigeria must avoid being a failed state.”

Ohanaeze described the failure of the Southeast governors to launch the Ebubeagu security outfit as an embarrassment.

Obiozoe said, “I strongly appeal to the governors without further hesitation to consolidate and launch the Ebubeagu security architecture in the Southeast. The security situation in the Southeast makes this call urgent and imperative.

“Our people must have a security networking agency that is under their control and capable of identifying both internal and external security threats in Igbo land.”

Police speak on reports of 230 Igbo killed in Jos

The Police Command in Plateau has described as fake news that unidentified persons have killed 230 Igbos in Jos.

ASP Ubah Ogaba, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, dismissed the report in a statement on Sunday.

Social media reports claimed two luxury bus conveying commuters of Igbo extraction were set ablaze, with the 230 passengers killed, in Jos.

But Ogaba maintained that the report was malicious and an attempt by mischief makers to stir up ethnic conflicts in the state and the country at large.

The PPRO therefore called on members of the public to disregard the dangerous rumour or fake news and go about their lawful businesses.

“The command hereby states categorically that there is no record of such incident anywhere in Jos.

“We urge members of the public to disregard and stop the spread of such as fake news capable of inspiring unwarranted panic, hatred, negativity, chaos and tribal conflict among the well-spirited residents of Plateau and Nigeria in general.

“We enjoin all citizens to cooperate with the Police and other security agencies by providing prompt and useful information that will help to enhance the security of the state rather than spreading unverified information capable of heating up the polity.

“On this note, we wish to reaffirm our resolve toward the provision of adequate security within the state and even beyond,” he said.

The spokesperson also urged residents to report all suspicious movements, emergency or distress to the nearest police formation for prompt response.

Igbos are not killers, Okorocha warns against ethnic profiling

Former Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has warned against the ethnic profiling of Igbo people, insisting they “are not killers”.

Okorocha stated this on Thursday, during the centenary celebration in honour of the former Premier of Eastern Nigeria, the late Michael Okpara, in Abuja.

“I appeal to all Nigerians to stop the ethnic profiling of the Igbo.

Gulak: Track down, arrest killers of Jonathan’s ex-aide – APC to security agencies

“They are not murderers, otherwise they won’t be in Kano or Lagos doing business.

“Indeed, we are passing through one of the ugliest moments of our history,” he said.

His comments come almost a week after the killing of Ahmed Gulak, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain.

Gulak, an ex-political adviser to former President, Goodluck Jonathan, was killed in Owerri, Imo State at the weekend.

Gulak, who conducted the APC primary election in Imo State prior to the 2019 general elections, had accused Okorocha of, among other things, taking him hostage and forcing him to announce the results in his favour.

MI shows support for Igbos, creates #IAmIgboToo campaign

Nigerian rapper, Jude Abaga popularly known as MI, has declared his support for people from the South-Eastern region of Nigeria better known as ‘Igbos’

The popular rapper on Wednesday took to Twitter to show love and support for Igbos, calling on other Nigerians to do the same as he started the #IAmIgboToo campaign.

This development comes shortly after the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari sent a warning that was seen as a threat to the Igbos who had celebrated their counterparts that died during the Nigerian Civil War of 1967-1970.

The President, in a now-deleted tweet, had written, “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”

Reacting to the tweet, MI posted a video with the caption, “The narrative that ‘Nigeria hates Igbo people’ is an outdated context that will leave with the old and bitter generation. Today let us stand with our Igbo family and say #IAmIgboToo.”

In the video, he said, “I can’t imagine being an Igbo citizen and seeing those tweets yesterday. I can’t imagine how it would have made them feel.

“So, I thought it could be beautiful today if we rally round organically on Twitter. Just post videos and messages on our timeline to tell our Igbo brothers and sisters that we are one and that we are Igbo too.”

As of the time of the report, the #IAmIgboToo campaign has countless impressions.

  • Nigeria engaging Microsoft to preserve local languages – Presidency

Nigeria engaging Microsoft to preserve local languages – Presidency

The presidency says Nigeria is engaging with tech giant, Microsoft Corporation, in order to use machine learning and artificial intelligence to preserve local languages.

Mr Ife Adebayo, the Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Innovations, in a statement on Friday in Abuja, said that democratising access to digital tools and digital skills was a core agenda of the Federal Government.

Adebayo said that he recently had interactions with Nigerians on what the present administration was doing to further encourage ICT startup innovations and other aspects of innovations and technology.

“So, what you find is that since 2016, the vice president has engaged with various technology leaders within the country and outside the country.

“Microsoft is one of them; and in January, he met with Microsoft again and spoke on the need to invest in Nigerians because Nigeria’s biggest resource is human capital.

“So, after various conversations with Microsoft, there were investments that were announced by the vice president and the Microsoft President and the goal is to train five million Nigerians across the country.

“This is going to be democratised and there would be a lot of focus on under-served areas. However everybody will have their opportunity.

“There is also the engagement with Microsoft to be able to use machine learning and artificial intelligence to preserve Nigeria languages starting with of course, Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo. So we are working with the Institute of Cultural Orientation.’’

He said that Nigerian languages would be localised in Microsoft products.

According to him, the way one can use Microsoft word and choose German, Spanish and English, one will also be able to choose Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo.

“Software developers who are building using Microsoft platforms would be able to build in their languages.

“We also have engagements with the EFCC; for example looking at the loopholes for corruption and how can we use technology to block those loopholes.

“And finally, when you look at connectivity within rural areas, within places that are difficult to reach, how can we use Microsoft to be able to provide broadband services in these areas?

“How can we use these services to be able to provide education and access to health care services?

“Because when you look at people who spoke about science and technology being theoretical, this is where this comes in, where we are able to provide reach and access to people who in difficulty to reach places.

“It is important to note also that constitutionally, the responsibility for primary and secondary schools lies with the local government or state government but the Federal Government of course steps in to support them.’’

He said that there were a lot of ICT centres by the Ministry of Labour, by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development and by the Ministry of Communications and Digital economy.

Adebayo said that the administration in collaboration with Microsoft was trying to collate all the centres existing in various places and look at how to maximise their uses.

He said this is “So that people within those communities know that they exist and they are able to claim digital skills from them.

“This is where we hope to get the five million people that Microsoft will be helping us to train.’’

  • Will Igbo presidential candidates start reaching out? Dele Sobowale

Will Igbo presidential candidates start reaching out? Dele Sobowale

    By Dele Sobowale

“They came forth to war; but, they always fell.” James Macpherson, 1736-1796.

James Macpherson was the father of Sir John Macpherson — the second to the last Governor General of Nigeria. His observation about groups which perpetually engage in losing battles because they fail to alter their approach is important as Igbos face a new engagement. I found the book from which the statement was lifted very illuminating. It is also pertinent to the latest quest for Igbo Presidency in 2023—which I totally endorse. It needs to be repeated that from the time late Dr Alex Ekwueme was schemed out of the Presidency by the military on their way out in 1998, no Igbo candidate has had a chance. Other Nigerians had been responsible; so have the Ndigbo.

Many of our readers would recall the loud noise for Igbo Presidency coming from former Abia State Governor – Orji Uzor Kalu – from 1999 until 2002. A visit from late Stella Obasanjo to Kalu’s mother was all it took for Kalu to switch. When Ekwueme tried his luck again in the Peoples Democratic Party’s primary, Abia State’s delegation led by Kalu was the first to vote against him. I mention this event not to embarrass Kalu but to point out that Igbo Presidential candidates need the total support of their people first; and then, they must reach out to the rest of us. Total Igbo vote will not secure victory as the almost total support of the South East for Jonathan have demonstrated in 2015 and 2019.

Unfortunately, with less than two years to go for the 2023 elections, there is very little sign of the outreach. Starting today, any candidate who does not begin the tough task of building structures in 36 states, 774 Local Government Councils and about 6023 Wards nationwide is placing himself at a competitive disadvantage. Yet, for strategic reasons which I don’t want to disclose, Igbo candidates are better positioned to achieve that breakthrough than even my brother in Yorubaland who is now assumed to be a candidate. They can make waves at the grassroots which will surprise their opponents. I obtained this insight from living and working in the four corners of Nigeria; and from travels to at least 30 states over a span of thirty-five years. But, since it was my stated personal policy not to get involved in politics, there was no opportunity to deploy the strategy in favour of any Presidential candidate.

Apart from getting out and meeting with others, they must be sensitive to those non-Igbos who are sympathetic to their cause and promote the interest from passive to active support. Permit me to give an example. I was in the Adamawa Governor’s House in late 2006, paying him a courtesy call and requesting for assistance to get to Gembu at the Manbilla Plateau when former Akwa Ibom Governor was ushered in by security men. Victor Attah was still a candidate for President. In his entourage were six people known to me. They were Yoruba, Igbo, Fulani, Berom and Tiv. He also recruited one person well-known from among the ethnic groups in the state. After the Governor, he was going to pay a courtesy call on the Lamido. But, Attah was astute enough to know that he could not go there with all Ibibio entourage. He wanted to be the Nigerian President; he had to start with the composition of his campaign team. It must be national.

The reason for the call for a blended campaign team should be self-evident. But, just in case, one trending event should help to drive the point home. When a Yoruba political leader and possible Presidential candidate unfolded part of his manifesto by promising to create 50 million jobs for youths, later changed to 5 million jobs, an Igbo candidate can deploy his Yoruba team member to send a more scathing rejoinder without being accused of tribalism. Another candidate from the North Central is also in the race. One of his brothers could ask him to forget it – and receive the flak that will necessarily result from the call. The Non-Igbo members will constitute the “shock absorbers” from the rivals’ attacks.

In that connection, I must register a personal complaint. Ever since I started the campaign for Igbo Presidency 2023, several friends from other ethnic groups have challenged me to name an Igbo candidate and tell Nigerians why they should consider the candidate. I started with Okonjo-Iweala – who is now out of the race. Then a long time acquaintance announced his interest. Anxious to promote him, I scrapped the article scheduled for the Sunday after his declaration of interest. Instead, the article was about the candidate. A few of our colleagues at Oregun, still alive and reading SUNDAY VANGUARD, called me to express appreciation for supporting our friend. Till today, I have not heard from the candidate; who it was my intention to help establish his national communication network. I don’t know why. But, it is my fervent hope that ethnicity had nothing to do with it. And that brings me to my second piece of advice to all candidates. Grasp all the hands stretched to help you; but evaluate their worth carefully. No candidate alone can make it – even with all the money.

Ohaneze also has a role to play here. One Igbo friend asked me two weeks ago if I had given up on Igbo Presidency advocacy. It was a long time I wrote about it; he correctly observed. I told him “No, but it is either Igbo candidates don’t need help from other parts of the country or the leaders of Ohaneze have not been reading SUNDAY VANGUARD. Like my friend, I have not heard a word from them.” He was shocked. Professor George Obiozor does not know the sort of pressure people like me experience for breaking ranks when our own people are in the race. The easiest and most profitable step to take is to “return home” (as I was told) and join the biggest gravy train in the zone. But, I have long lived with the principle that a man must stand for something or he will fall for anything. There is a lot of work to do; and I have a plan….

GOVERNOR MATAWALE’S HOUSE IS ON FIRE; HE WANTS TO BURN NIGERIA.

“Bandits killed 2,619; collected N970m ransom; 30,000 bandits in Zamfara forests, five other locations..” Governor Matawalle. April 3, 2021.

Governor Matawalle and Sheik Gumi are the two leading “Devilfathers” (leave God out of this sordid business) of bandits and kidnappers in the North. The Governor, against wiser counsel, continues to negotiate with and pay bandits and kidnappers from revenue contributed mostly by Southern states. Gumi pleads for amnesty for the heinous criminals, without saying a word on behalf of the victims. Yet, this is a Muslim cleric who would readily approve amputating a man who steals a goat according to Sharia law. He, in my opinion is worshipping Satan and not the God of the Holy Prophet Mohammed (Peace be unto Him). The tag team – Matawalle and Gumi – had promoted banditry to a profession deserving National Honours. They call it amnesty. But, the rest of us are not stupid; we know a scam when we see one.

Take a look at those figures provided by Matawalle again. They should reveal some truths to you. But, in case you can’t figure them out yourself, we at UniJankara will help you out. To begin with N970 million would probably pay all the public servants in Zamfara State for a month. Instead of paying the workers, the Governor is carrying their money to the forests to donate to his adopted sons – the bandits. A lot of words to describe that sort of behaviour; sane is not one of them. The lunacy of paying bandits is yielding the appropriate dividends. Matawalle himself provided the figures for his own self-indictment.

“30,000 bandits in Zamfara forests” was his claim to cement his position among those Nigerians anywhere should not have leading them. This is worse than the proverbial case of “the blind leading the blind”. It is more like a totally drunk and manic driver behind the wheels of a luxury bus full of people with “99 standing”. To understand the basis for my charges against the Governor the reader must bear certain facts in mind.

“Even God cannot change the past.” Agathon, 447-401 BC.

Anybody who doubts me can go and read all the newspapers before May 29, 2019; when Matawalle became Zamfara Governor. He would not read about 500 being killed during the years in office of all his predecessors. Irresponsible former Governor Yari might have spent more time in Abuja and abroad than Gusau, but he did not spend his time driving bullion vans to deliver money to hardened criminals. That was Matawalle’s innovation. In two years, despite the Governor running errands for heartless brutes, more people have lost their lives than under all his predecessors combined since Zamfara State was created in 1996. The man has a lot of blood on his hands.

    GHOST BANDITS OF ZAMFARA STATE

That, however, is only part of the charges against him. He is not even truthful. During my years in the North, especially Sokoto, I had the opportunity to travel to all parts of what became Zamfara State. There are very few forests during the rainy season; there is virtually none during the dry season lasting up to six months. Right now, there is hardly any forest in any part of the state. So, where are 30,000 bandits hiding?

Since it is no longer news that virtually every state of Nigeria employs ghost workers, is it not possible that somebody might have inflated the number of bandits – ghost bandits that is – in order to claim more funds from the government purse to pay them? I cannot afford to hire a helicopter; but, I can bet anything that if anybody can provide one for surveillance, we will not find forests capable of harbouring 30,000 bandits. That is bad enough.

If we accept Matawalle’s statement as the truth, then he must be charged with another offense bordering on treason. Anybody who knows the number of bandits in a state and their locations in “ghost” forests, and who has failed to reveal the information to the Nigerian armed forces is giving aid and comfort to the enemies of Nigeria. Matawalle should be careful about his utterances on this matter henceforth. In any other country, with a government, he had said enough in those declarations to be regarded as a double agent – one of those profiting handsomely from the banditry they protect and nurture. He is lucky we have no Federal Government in Nigeria.

That has been the unhappy fate of one of Nigeria’s best legal technocrats. His promise was published on the same day Nigerians discovered anew that after six years in office, the Buhari regime had not added 1000MW dependably per day to what they inherited. Don’t reduce your stake in Nigeria, Uzodinma to Igbo

The Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, has urged the Igbo ethnic group “to jettison every action and activity that would reduce the high stake (their) region has in the country so as to produce the next president of Nigeria.”

Uzodinma made this known in Owerri, the Imo State capital when he welcomed his counterparts from the other states of the South-East and stakeholders of the region to its first security summit last Sunday.

“Igbo are major stakeholders in Nigeria as they constitute the second largest population of every city in Nigeria,” he said.

“Our people have more stake in real estates in virtually all the major cities in the country, our people control the commanding height of commerce all over the country.”

The Governor explained that no ethnic group in Nigeria is more united than the Igbo.

“We, the Igbo are more united than any other ethnic nationality in Nigeria, through our shared struggle, our chequered history and our deep-rooted extended family traditions and brotherhood makes our values, beliefs, commitment to a united Nigeria, beyond reproach.”

He noted that this at a time when the peace in the region is threatened by some “dissident groups” who have taken up arms and created the impression that the Igbo want to leave Nigeria to create their own nation called Biafra.

“What Ndigbo wants is justice, equity and fairness. A Nigeria that provides a level playing ground for all citizens. That is what we want, not Biafra. And we believe we can get what we want through constructive and tenacious engagement with fellow Nationals and relevant institutions, not by violence or war. Igbo have seen war, not in storybooks or in movies but real war. No right-thinking Igbo, who experienced the excruciating and devastating effects of the civil war on Igboland and our people, will vote for another war. The young and inexperienced may zealously want to beat the drumbeat of war, but it is our duty, as their parents and elders to talk them out of it.

“Those creating the erroneous impression that Igbo want to leave Nigeria are either naive or mischievous. Igbos need Nigeria just like Nigeria and Nigerians need Igbo,” he said.

Doyin Okupe tenders apology to Igbos for comments on Ahmadu Bello

Doyin Okupe, a former Special Assistant to former President Olusegun Obasanjo has apologized to the Igbos for saying an Igbo presidency cannot evolve until the north forgives the Igbos for killing the Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello.

Okupe, who is also a former Senior Special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan, tendered the apology for the incendiary statement he made about an Igbo Presidency via Twitter on Saturday.

Recall that Bello was murdered on January 15, 1966, by Major Chukwuma Nzeogwu, an Igbo Nigerian Army officer in a coup which collapsed Nigeria’s post-independence government. Bello was still serving as premier of Northern Nigeria at the time.

Joining the fray about the conversation on Igbo presidency, Okupe had tweeted: “A national consensus for Igbo Presidency cannot evolve until the core north forgives the Igbos for the killing of Sardauna of Sokoto by nigerian soldiers of Igbo extraction in the 1966 Coup.”

Speaking further, Okupe added that he was ready to shelve his presidential ambition if a consensus for Igbo presidency is reached by his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He said: “If this consensus emerges, in the interest of equity, fairness & national unity, I will shelve my ambition & support whoever is chosen as a candidate by my party. However, in the event that this national consensus is not achievabe, I WILL RUN FOR PRESIDENT IN 2023 by God’s Grace.”

The comments made by the presidential aide, however, did not go down well with many, who slammed Okupe, making him trend on Twitter, but he later deleted the tweet, and hours after, returned to Twitter to apologise.

He wrote: “OPEN APPOLOGY TO THE IGBOS. I tender my unreserved appology 2 d Igbos & other nigerians who felt offended by my post on igbo presidency and the north.I never intended to hurt or demean the Igbos.Instead I wanted 2 help actualise d dream. I regret d said post, & I am truly sorry.”
