I’ve offended Ooni, I seek his forgiveness – Sunday Igboho

The Ancient City of Ile-Ife was agog with excitement on Saturday as Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, paid a historic visit to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II.

Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, tendered an unreserved apology and sought the royal father’s forgiveness.

Igboho’s visit to the Ooni’s palace drew the presence of prominent Yoruba traditional rulers, chiefs, and supporters of the embattled activist.

The occasion was marked by emotional moments as Igboho admitted his past mistakes and publicly expressed remorse over comments he had previously made against the Ooni.

Addressing the gathering, Igboho said he had come to openly apologise, stressing that no one dared insult a royal father and that he deeply regretted his earlier utterances.

“I thank God for my life and for this day. I never knew Kabiyesi would honour me in this manner.

“I have offended the Ooni in the past, and I am here to seek his forgiveness. Whoever I may have offended should please forgive me,” he said.

The Yoruba agitator revealed that during his imprisonment in the Benin Republic, he was astonished to learn that the Ooni had played a pivotal role in securing his release in spite of his earlier criticisms.

He further appealed to Oba Ogunwusi to use his influence to facilitate the removal of his name from the security watchlist and to help ensure the unfreesing of his bank accounts.

“My priority remains the security of Yorubaland. Our people are being killed, and we cannot continue like this.

” I want to use my strength and voice to champion the cause of Yoruba security. Kabiyesi, please help us to make this possible,” he pleaded.

In their remarks, the Attah of Ayede-Ekiti, Oba Abdulmumini Orisagbemi, and the Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Rasheed Olabomi, commended Igboho for showing humility.

They assured him that Yoruba traditional rulers had forgiven him and expressed confidence that the Ooni would intervene in addressing his challenges.

Responding,  Ooni urged Igboho and his supporters to embrace patience and humility, noted that those virtues remained the foundation of leadership.

“One thing I have learnt is that a patient and humble person will always triumph. When many of you abused me, I smiled because I understood.

” I had several private meetings with former President Muhammadu Buhari concerning you, and I thank God you are alive today. It was not easy,” Ooni said.

The royal father also praised President Bola Tinubu for demonstrating the Yoruba Omoluabi ethos in his handling of national issues, expressing confidence that he would support causes dear to the Yoruba people.

“You are my son, and I am not angry with you. You are a pride to the Yoruba race.

“Some advised me against receiving you in Ife, but I told them what you are doing is not for yourself alone.

“It is for the good of our people. All issues concerning your name on the wanted list and your frozen bank accounts will be resolved.

“Let us put aside fights and unite for the progress of Yorubaland.”Ooni declared.

Ignore viral video on eviction ultimatum to herders in Igboho – Police

The police in Oyo is advising citizens to ignore a viral video by suspected separatistf groups which surfaced on social media issuing eviction ultimatum to herders in Igboho area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Adewale Osifeso, made the call in a statement Wednesday in Ibadan.

Osifeso said that the video which surfaced online in the early hours of Tuesday was specifically designed by agents of mischief to disrupt the relative peace being enjoyed in the state by inciting violence and civil-disturbances.

“The Oyo State Police Command wishes to dispel unfounded rumours and speculations across certain segments making the round on the social media, over the purported eviction of Herders at Igboho, Oorelope, Local Government Areas by suspected separatist groups members as misleading and complete falsehood.

“No notice of eviction was pronounced by any individual or group on anyone at any period in time,” Osifeso said.

He said that the state Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi had tasked the supervising Area Commander in charge to personally lead confidence building patrols and increase visibility of personnel around the jurisdiction.

Osifeso further said that more command’s operational, intelligence and tactical assets have since been deployed to prevent any untoward occurrence.

Tinubu should arrest, prosecute Sunday Igboho – Miyetti Allah

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN has insisted Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemi, popularly known as Igboho should be arrested and prosecuted by the Federal Government over his ‘unlawful statement’ on Fulani herders.

MACBAN National President, Baba Othman Ngelzarma, said this in response to Igboho’s remarks that Fulani herders should be expunged from the Southwest.

MACBAN noted that if Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, could be arrested and prosecuted, then the same thing should apply to Igboho.

Igboho, who recently returned to Nigeria after about two years of detention in Benin Republic, accused Fulani herders of killing farmers in the Southwest.

In a statement he signed, Ngelzarma said: “We call on the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) and relevant security agencies to arrest and prosecute Sunday Igboho for making this unlawful statement that amounts to treason because he is asking for the actualisation of Oduduwa nation.

“His statements are unlawful. If Nnamdi Kanu will be held behind bars for a similar offence, we see no reason why Sunday Igboho will be allowed to go scot-free without being arrested and prosecuted.”

Reminded that neither he nor Ighoho was a muslim, he asserted that it made no difference. He said he had wished to see Igboho, so as to sympathize with his predicament.

Nigerian Government lacked the capacity to criminalize Oduduwa Republic – Prof Akintoye

The Leader of the umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, Professor Banji Akintoye, has said the Nigerian Government lacked the capacity to criminalize the agitated Oduduwa Republic, a sovereign nation for the Southwestern Nigerians.

The renowned historian and Second Republic senator stated this on Saturday, in a statement made available to the press by Mr Maxwell Adeleye, the Communications Secretary of the Self-Determination Movement.

Stressing that the agitation is beyond the manipulation of the current government, he called on Yoruba people across the globe not to lose hope on the actualization of the Oduduwa Republic.

We shall keep the struggle alive, and beyond the manipulation of the Nigerian government

Akintoye, who marked his 87th birthday yesterday, said he had pleaded with his loyalists who wanted to celebrate his birthday anniversary to do otherwise, saying he cannot be celebrating when Igboho, the pioneer of the freedom movement, was still in detention.

The statement reads in part, “My message to all Yoruba people across the world who are passionate for the country of their own is not to lose hope.

“I am very much convinced that we are on our way to freedom. Our agitation is an idea whose time has come.

“We shall keep the struggle alive, and beyond the manipulation of the Nigerian government.
We won’t allow the Federal Government of Nigeria to criminalize our struggle. The Yoruba people worldwide are urged never to be deterred in the struggle.

“Many Yoruba patriots worldwide planned to celebrate my birthday but I pleaded with them not to do so in honour of my son and one of the heroes of our struggle, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, fondly called Sunday Ighoho, by all of us. I cannot be celebrating a birthday when Igboho is in detention.”

DSS releases Igboho’s ‘native doctor’ arrested since July

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released a man accused of preparing charms for embattled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo popularly called Sunday Igboho.

Dada Ifasooto was detained by the secret service on July 16, some two weeks after its operatives stormed Igboho’s Ibadan residence in a Gestapo style, killing two of his aides and arresting 12 others.

A few weeks later, the DSS freed the 12 detainees on bail, although the whereabouts of the two corpses of the agitator’s aides remain unknown.

In a statement on Friday, one of Igboho’s lawyers, Pelumi Olajengbesi, said that the whereabouts of Ifasooto were unknown till the 12 aides of Igboho, upon their release, revealed that they met him in DSS custody.

“This is to announce the release of Mr. Dada Ifasooto who was secretly arrested by the State Security Service (SSS) on 16th July, 2021 on the allegation that he is a native doctor who prepares charms for Chief Sunday Igboho,” the statement read.

“Mr. Dada Ifasooto’s whereabouts was unknown for months until one of the released detainees from SSS custody informed our office that he is in the custody of the Secret Service in an underground cell.

“The strange allegations against Mr. Dada Ifasooto and his incarceration defies logical and legal thoughts and underpins the ill-motivated persecution of Chief Sunday Igboho and his associates. Amongst other things, it exposes the straw-clutching antics of the State Security Service in this matter even as it underscores the ridiculous and unlawful length the agency is willing to go.”

In July, Igboho was arrested by Interpol in the Benin Republic when he tried to catch a Germany-bound flight and has since been detained in the Francophone West African nation where he is facing migration-related charges.

Prior to his arrest, he was declared wanted by the DSS after he escaped a midnight raid on July 1.

DSS releases last two Igboho aides after 114 days in custody

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released the last two aides of embattled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, from its custody.

Those released include Jamiu Noah Oyetunji and Amudat Habibat Babatunde (Lady K) who were held back in detention earlier in September when their colleagues were released.

Speaking on the latest development regarding the case, lead counsel to the Igboho’s aides – Pelumi Olajengbesi stated that the matter is still a subject of litigation.

He added that no further comments regarding the issue will be made for the time being.

In July, the DSS carried out a midnight raid of Igboho’s Soka house in Ibadan, Oyo State, and arrested 12 of the activist’s allies, whisking them away to Abuja, where they were kept in detention.

After a brief legal tussle in August, the DSS released 8 of the aides and then another 2 were released in September.

Those earlier released were Abideen Shittu, Abdullateef Onaolapo, Ayobami Donald, Olakunle Oluwapelumi, Dikeola Ademola, Bamidele Sunday, Raji Kazeem, Taiwo Tajudeen, Tajudeen Rinloye and Uthman Adelabu.

Igboho critically ill, his organs likely damaged – Lawyer

This might not be the best of time for popular Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho) as he is said to be critically ill.

According to his lead counsel, Yomi Alliyu (SAN), Igboho health was deteriorating and that he required urgent medical attention abroad.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Igboho has been detained in Cotonou by the government of Benin Republic since July while on alleged transit journey to Europe.

It was learnt that the government had not filed specific charges against him.

Igboho’s lawyer confirmed he (Igboho) had been taken to the hospital in Cotonou for medical attention.

Alliyu claimed that the agitator’s body organs may have been damaged while trying to escape during the July 1 invasion of his Soka, Ibadan home by operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS).

“Igboho was not diagnosed with this sickness before he was arrested in Cotonou. It was so critical that they had to convey him to a hospital.

“I can’t tell if he has been returned to the prison from the hospital, but what I know is, he’s battling ill health and it seems his kidney and lungs are already being affected.

“Even though I cannot tell which part of his body the sickness has really affected, I know it has to do with his internal organs,” Aliyu said in an interview with The Nation.

The lawyer said Igboho had applied to the Republic of Benin authorities to allow him seek better medical attention in either France or Germany.

Meanwhile, no specific date had been fixed for hearing of planned charges to be filed against the activist.

An Oyo State High Court had, last month, declared Igboho’s agitation legal, establishing that it was in exercise of his fundamental human rights.

The court also declared DSS’ invasion of his house illegal and slammed a N20 billion aggravated damages against the secret police

  • Buhari lists National Assembly member, high profile persons behind Igboho, Kanu

Buhari lists National Assembly member, high profile persons behind Igboho, Kanu

High profile sponsors are behind the secessionist activities of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, and Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho, President Muhammadu Buhari said this morning.

According to President Buhari on Friday, one of those found to be financing the agitators is a federal lawmaker.

The President said those sponsoring violence and making hate speeches to instigate disorder would be arrested and prosecuted.

President Buhari spoke in his Independence Day broadcast aired on television and radio networks.
Besides insecurity, the President spoke on the economy, food security poverty eradication and education.

Nigeria marks 61 years on Friday (today) as an independent nation.

Restating that Nigeria’s “unity is not negotiable”, President Buhari announced that while efforts were ongoing to prevent further misuse of the social media, the suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria had been lifted.

It is however subjected to some conditions, he said.

He also said “Nigeria Roadmap on Local Refinery” was on track with the inauguration of a modular refinery in Imo State.

The President added that a second modular refinery will come on board in December in Edo State and a third in Bayelsa State in 2022.

On those behind agitators, he said further that the revelations were made possible by the arrest of two separatist figures: Kanu and Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho.

The President, who said the Federal Government believes that every grievance by any section of the country could be resolved through dialogue, however, warned that any person or group found in the act of inciting violence would be arrested and prosecuted.

According to him, those who had caused serious chaos and violence did so through words, using lies, targeted hate speeches to propel violence, which had led to the death of many citizens and destruction of property.

He called on all Nigerians to reject the lure by those he described as “evil people” from plunging the country into further crisis.

Citing section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the President said the security and welfare of Nigerians remained the prime focus of his administration.

Buhari said: “Our resolve for a peaceful, united and one Nigeria remains resolute and unwavering.

“That said, our hope is not to fight for peace. We can always settle our grievances peacefully without spilling any blood.

“I will therefore take this opportunity, on this special day that symbolises the unity and oneness of our great nation, to ask all Nigerians to embrace peace and dialogue, whatever your grievances.

“Nigeria is for all of us. Its unity is not negotiable. And its ultimate success can only be achieved if we all come together with a common goal of having peace and prosperity for our nation.

“We shall continue to work on dialogue-based solutions to address legitimate grievances. But we remain ready to take decisive actions against secessionist agitators and their sponsors who threaten our national security.

“The recent arrests of Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Adeyemo, and the ongoing investigations being conducted have revealed certain high-profile financiers behind these individuals. We are vigorously pursuing these financiers, including one identified as a serving member of the National Assembly.

“Fellow Nigerians, this is a clear example of how people abandon their national leadership positions for their selfish gains. Instead of preaching unity, they are funding and misleading our youth to conduct criminal acts that sometimes lead to unfortunate and unnecessary loss of lives and property.

“As the so-called leaders run abroad to hide, our innocent youths are misled and left in the streets to fight for their senseless and destructive causes.

“Government will continue, with greater level of peoples’ participation and in collaboration with our international partners, to improve the security architecture, reduce enabling environment for criminality to thrive and eliminate opportunities for terrorism financing.”

Speaking generally on security, President Buhari noted that progress had been made in the fight against terrorism and banditry, which had been the major features in the northern part of the country.

According to him, to support and sustain the ongoing campaign to keep the country safe and peaceful, the armed forces had recruited over 17,000 personnel, while the police had been granted leave to recruit 10,000 personnel yearly for the next six year.

More than 8,000 terrorists had surrendered as evidence of the various efforts, Buhari said.

He added: “As our economy continues to open after the COVID-19 related lockdowns, we have also seen the resurgence of insecurity in certain parts of the country.

“In the last four months, the gallant men and women of the military and security agencies have made tremendous progress in addressing these new security challenges. We are taking the fight to our enemies from all angles and we are winning.”

Buhari said the Integrated National Security and Waterways Protection Infrastructure, the Deep Blue Project, was launched to secure Nigerian waters up to the Gulf of Guinea.

On measures being taken to secure the country, Buhari said: “I am also pleased to note that most of the Air Force platforms we acquired over the past three years have started to arrive in Nigeria. These will positively impact our security operations in all parts of the country.

“In line with section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the security and welfare of Nigerians continue to be the prime focus on which programmes and projects of our government revolves.”

President Buhari, who identified the social media as a useful platform, said it had been misused to coordinate criminal activities.

He said he has directed the lifting of the suspension of the activities of Twitter in Nigeria as long as the microblogging site fulfilled some conditions.

He said: “As we embrace the digital economy in Nigeria, we are fully aware of the prospects and the perils. Our policies have been developed to enable Nigerians to take advantage of the prospects and avoid the perils of digital technologies.

“Rather some users have misused the platform to organise, coordinate, and execute criminal activities, propagate fake news, and promote ethnic and religious sentiments.

“To address these negative trends, the Federal Government of Nigeria suspended the operations of Twitter in Nigeria on June 5, 2021 to allow the Government put measures in place to address these challenges.

“Following the suspension of Twitter operations, Twitter Inc. reached out to the Federal Government of Nigeria to resolve the impasse. Subsequently, I constituted a Presidential Committee to engage Twitter to explore the possibility of resolving the issue.”

The President lamented the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the country, saying that the last 18 months had been the most difficult in the history of the country.

He said: “Nigerians came together as one to fight against COVID-19. It is this attitude and by the special grace of God, we continue to survive the pandemic as a nation and indeed, provide leadership and example at regional and international levels.

“The doomsday scenario predicted for our country never came. Even as the Delta variant continues to spread, we have built the capacity we need to respond now and into the future,”

He cautioned Nigerians against taking the pandemic lightly, admonishing that they adhere to public health and social measures, put on mask on and get vaccinated.

He said: “We can control this pandemic, but it requires effort on everybody’s part. The investments we made in response to COVID-19 will also serve our country to tackle any future disease outbreaks or pandemics.”

The President rejected the lack of easy access to COVID-19 vaccines, saying: “I will take this opportunity to remind the global community that the current state of access to COVID-19 vaccines is unacceptable. We cannot afford a situation where a handful of countries keep the global vaccine supply to themselves at the expense of other nations.

“We must act now to accelerate equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. This is the message I conveyed to the international community in New York last week.

“As we push to source vaccines for our immediate needs, we shall invest more to support our pharmaceutical and research agencies to come up with ideas for locally developed vaccines. Should another pandemic arise in the future, our question is simple; will Nigeria be ready?”

Buhari said the Ministries of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Health, Education and Science and Technology have been directed to work with local and international pharmaceutical companies and research organisations to enhance Nigeria’s domestic pharmaceutical capacity.

“Already, the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority is raising a $200 million fund for this initiative that will complement the Central Bank of Nigeria’s ongoing N85 billion Healthcare Sector Research and Development Intervention Scheme to support local researchers in the development of vaccines and drugs to combat communicable and non-communicable diseases, including COVID-19,” he stated.

Speaking on the ongoing reforms in the oil and gas sector, Buhari acknowledged the achievement made in passing the almost two decades old Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), adding that the new law would help in removing the dark corners in running the nation’s oil sector.
