Sanwo-olu vows to ensure the safety of Igbos, properties in Lagos

The Governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday visited many major markets populated by people from the South-East.

The Lagos-born politician, took a tour of the markets ahead of the Saturday gubernatorial election, following the open endorsement for his re-election by the Ndigbo community in the state.

It was a rousing welcome for Sanwo-Olu at an open forum organised by traders, under the aegis of the Auto Spare Parts And Machinery Dealers Association, in Trade Fair Complex, Ojo.

The governor at the open forum pledged to ensure the safety of the businesses and properties of Ndigbo in Lagos State.

The engagements were initiated in response to concerns raised over the safety of businesses and properties owned by South-East traders in Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu allayed the fears of the Igbo traders, assuring them that Lagos would continue to be a melting pot for all Nigerians.

He said his administration would continue to foster security and promote peaceful coexistence among all ethnic nationalities in the state.

”I am here on a solidarity visit and to thank you for your public endorsement of my humble self, which I believe will be reflected at the polls on Saturday with the highest number of votes cast from members of your community.

”You are not giving us your support for anything; you believe we deserve this encouragement because my team and I have worked tirelessly to improve your well-being.

”Very soon, Ojo will have a brand new General Hospital that will serve your needs. You also have seen expressways and bridges being completed on this corridor and we have awarded a rail project into Okokomaiko that will aid the movement of people and goods.

”I am excited that Lagos is on the path of growth. Through your cooperation and peaceful coexistence, we can ensure that we will not only build the state, but we will also build a better country for ourselves,” the governor said at the Trade Fair forum.

He assured the Igbo traders of his government’s commitment to their prosperity, adding that the approval recently received by the state for the development of Badagry Seaport was to facilitate economic development and boost logistics, especially in the movement of goods.

Sanwo-Olu pledged his administration’s commitment to the safety and security of non-indigenes living in Lagos, urging the Igbo traders not to listen to the scaremongers threatening to attack them because of their electoral choices.

”We will continue to work with your leadership to enhance cooperation and identify areas we can improve on to foster peace and stability. We will not be hostile to any community of non-indigenes.

”For as long as you conduct yourselves in a peaceful manner, your safety and security will remain our priority. There is no need for any law-abiding resident to be scared,” he said.

ASPAMDA President, Chief Ngozi Emechebe, described Sanwo-Olu as ‘a true friend of Igbo’, noting that the governor had never been hostile to non-Yoruba residents living in the state.

Emechebe said that the forum was initiated as a reassurance of support of the Ndigbo community to the governor’s re-election, saying that the traders would work for Sanwo-Olu’s electoral victory in their respective polling stations.

“Sanwo-Olu is a good man and has demonstrated that he is a lover of Igbo. We have resolved to support the governor for the second term because of his performance and his economic policies that have supported our businesses.

“Through this forum, we are assuring the governor that we shall sing the song of victory together with him,” he said.

Lagos police investigates video of MC Oluomo allegedly threatening Igbos to vote for APC

The Lagos State Police Command has said it is investigating to know if “it’s an old, recycled one or not”, a video circulating on social media, showing the Chairman of Lagos State Parks and Management, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, at a Polling Unit (PU) threatening Igbos to vote All Progressives Congress, APC.

This was made known on Twitter by the Public Relations Officer- Lagos State Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin.

“While the video will be investigated to know if it’s an old, recycled one or not, it should be noted that this is criminal and totally against the Electoral Act, 2022,” he posted.

    Watch the video below:

Though the PU was not specified, commenters on the video say the incident happened somewhere in the Oshodi area where MC Oluomo holds sway.

“I repeat am again. Any Igbo wey dem born well, make him come vote for here. Shebi I dey here. If dem born dem well, make dem come vote for here,” he insisted in the 15 seconds of video as police officers try to calm him down.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that prior to the election, many non-indigenes, especially Igbos in the state, had complained of attempts to disenfranchise them with the denial of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs), as well as threats of violence against them.

In another viral video, a thug suspected to be sympathetic to the APC was caught on video at a polling unit telling voters they must vote for the ruling party or they should go home without voting.

The incident reportedly happened at the Fehintola Giwa Street Aguda, Surulere, Lagos State, as voters were trying to get through with their accreditation before voting.

In the video, the thug is heard saying:

“This place na APC o. If you no wan vote for APC, make you go home o. If you no fit vote APC for here, go your house. Nobody force you to vote. If I see you vote another party, I go call Luger. This area na APC territory o.”

Equatorial Guinea is a Central African country comprising the Rio Muni mainland and 5 volcanic offshore islands. Capital Malabo, on Bioko Island, has Spanish colonial architecture and is a hub for the country’s prosperous oil industry.
Its Arena Blanca beach draws dry-season butterflies. The tropical forest of the mainland’s Monte Alen National Park is home to gorillas, chimpanzees and elephants.
According to statistics from World Bank the population figure as at 2021 stood at 1.634 million (2021)
Equatorial Guinea, located at the Eastern end of the Gulf of Guinea, West coast of Africa, it is the only Spanish speaking country on the continent.
The tribes dwelling in this country include the Bubi, Fang and the Igbo.

  • 2023 Elections: We will reciprocate any attack on Igbos – IPOB

2023 Elections: We will reciprocate any attack on Igbos – IPOB

Ahead of the February 25 presidential and National Assembly in the country, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has warned against attacking Igbos during the polls.

According to  Emma Powerful,  IPOB’s spokesman,  the group would reciprocate any attack on Igbos during the forthcoming elections.

In a statement, Powerful said IPOB would not stand by and allow anybody to threaten or attack Igbos during the elections.

Powerful said: “The attention of the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the command and leadership of our great leader Mazi Nnamdi KANU has been drawn to a threat from a small village Monarch in Yoruba Land to the effect that they will deal with non-indigenes, especially Ndigbo who doesn’t vote in the upcoming elections according to the wish of the monarch. This sort of threat tells you all you need to know about the Nigerian selection process, which they like to call an election.

“IPOB as a freedom movement do reaffirm our non-recognition and or participation of (in) the Nigerian electoral process because the results do not represent the will of the people, and this is why an idiot somewhere will have the gumption to threaten what they called non-indigenes and the Igbo nation in particular. While we Biafrans await a date for Referendum, nobody should threaten Ndigbo and Biafrans residing temporarily in other parts of Nigeria for any reason.

“IPOB want to state unequivocally that any attack in any part of Nigeria on the Biafran people or the Igbo Nation or their properties on account of the choice of individuals to participate and vote according to their conviction during this so-called election will be met with adequate and commensurate action.

“We urge men and women of good conscience in the North and West to caution their traditional rulers and politicians who want to use Ndigbo and Biafrans as scapegoats in this skewed election process to be very careful and retrace their steps. Gone are the days when Ndigbo will be threatened and intimidated during elections. As long as Biafrans have not been given the opportunity to exit Nigeria via a referendum, IPOB will not stand by and watch anyone Nigerian or non-Nigerian to threaten Biafrans or carry out such threats against us and get away with it.

“Even as IPOB do not wish to be drawn into the ZOO politics, nobody has the right to threaten Ndigbo or attempt to compel them to vote for a particular party or candidate. Any Biafran who wants to vote in this election has the right to vote for any party or candidate of his/her choice, and nobody should direct or threaten them to vote for a particular party in their community or state. If anyone threatens to attack Ndigbo and Biafrans or non-indigenes residents in your place, be rest assured that the people being attacked will not sit and watch their property and life being destroyed and will activate their right to Self Defence.

“We are urging Ndigbo, Biafrans and non-indigenes everywhere to be prepared to defend their property, family and their own lives during and after this election period. Do not allow anyone to use you or your family as a sacrificial lamb this time around.

“It is very imperative that we remind those who think highly of themselves and believe they will resort to violence and attack Biafrans that they do not have the monopoly of violence. Until Referendum is conducted and Biafrans exit Nigeria, those who have the habit of threatening and attacking Ndigbo must understand that it will not be business as usual this time around because their lives also will be in danger when they attack others.

“These nitwits believe that Biafrans are soft targets to threaten and attack at will well they should know that it will not be so this time around. These morons never threatened fulani not vote for any other party except their own party and their own person but rather directed their misguided outbursts against Biafrans and Indigbo. We dare them to attack NDIGBO and Biafrans this time around and see what will happen.”

Powerful urged Igbos to defend themselves “as long as Nigeria forced and kept us into this unwanted contraption, we are advising Biafrans to be fully ready to meet the coming challenge squarely and unwaveringly.”

Baring any last minute change of date, INEC has fixed the presidential election in the country on the 25th of February, while Governorship/State Assembly election would hold on the 11th of March.

2023: Tinubu will care for the Igbos – Gbajabiamila

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep Femi Gbajabiamila says the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu will serve the interests of all parts of Nigeria if elected in 2023.

Gbajabiamila made the statement on Saturday in Lagos, while speaking at the Surulere Constituency 2 APC Town Hall meeting.

He said the APC presidential candidate was passionate about the development of Nigeria, adding he would care for all the people of the country if elected.

“One thing I can assure all Nigerians is that when Asiwaju Bola Tinubu becomes the president of this country, he will be president for all.

“He will care for the Yoruba people, he will care for South South , he will care for the Igbos, he will care for the Nupes and the northerners.

“He is the only candidate that has proven himself well.He has the capacity and will deliver”, Gbajabiamila said.

The Speaker particularly appealed to Igbos to invest their votes in Tinubu to take the country to greater heights .

He said it was unfair not to vote for Tinubu, simply because he is not from the South East or any other region apart from his.

Gbajabiamila said Tinubu had done well for the Igbos and urged people from the region to give him all the support to lead the country.

“To our brothers and sisters from the South East, has Asiwaju done anything to offend anybody in the South East? Has he done anything wrong?

“Tell me one state in Nigeria where you have a non -indigene in the cabinet. I can tell you ,the only state where that happens is Lagos state.

“The Director-General of Budget Office in Nigeria, one of the highest positions in Nigeria, what is his name? Ben Akabueze. Is he from from Lagos? No ,he is from the South East and Asiwaju put him there.

” He determines the budget.Whatever any money any agency or department is looking for, it must come Akabueze’s table. He determines whether to give or not to give. That is a man from the South East, put there by Asiwaju Tinubu.

“And I can give you many more names. So, why will a man that has done much for the Igbos now come to you for votes ,and you tell him he has not done bad ,he has done well ,but because he is not from the South East ,we have somebody from the South East to vote for. I think that is not the way to go,” he said .

Gbajabiamila said the 2023 election was about the progress of the country, and urged Nigerians to vote for competence rather than tribe or religion .

  • I can’t betray Igbos, Orji Kalu replies Edwin Clark

I can’t betray Igbos, Orji Kalu replies Edwin Clark

The Chief Whip of the Senate, Sen. Orji Kalu, has said that he never betrayed the South-East in pursuing his political ambitions.

Kalu, in a statement he issued on Thursday in Abuja, reiterated his determination to continue to advance the Igbo cause.

Recall that an elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark had accused Kalu of betraying the Igbo cause by dropping his presidential ambition and supporting Senate President, Ahmed Lawan.

Clark said that although Kalu was one of the oldest vocal frontline politicians in the South-East, he doubted his sincerity and transparency.

The elder statesman added that it was surprising that Kalu did not only drop his ambition to contest the 2023 presidential election, but also declared his support for the presidential ambition of Lawan who hails from North-East.

Kalu, however, dismissed the accusation and said that rather he is doing his best to reintegrate the South-East into mainstream politics.

“I have great respect for Chief Edwin Clark; he is an elder statesman and a patriotic Nigerian. I want to sincerely commend him for openly supporting the South-East geo-political zone to produce the next president of Nigeria.

“It is imperative I remind him that I didn’t betray my people, rather I am doing my best to reintegrate them into mainstream politics.

“In the last two years, I have been at the forefront agitating for a Nigerian president of South-East extraction, when most of them were all saying “Southern Presidency”, Kalu said.

He argued that none of the actors openly said the South-East geo-political zone should have it.

“I was shocked that even the zone the entire South-East supported in unity including myself in 2011 and 2015 respectively, has the highest number of contestants without thinking of their brothers.

“This is knowing fully well that the South-East zone has remained the only zone in Southern Nigeria that has not produced the nation’s president since the rotation convention dispensation that began in 1999.

“Coming this late hour to support the South-East is rather suspicious to me if they couldn’t do it two years ago.

“The truth is, Chief Edwin Clark knows the South-East cannot get the ticket of any party in an open contest as it is today without a gentleman agreement to concede it to the South-East.

“If all the aspirants from the South-West and South-South cannot support their brothers from the South-East, it is only politically correct to support the North-East geo-political zone, which to me is the shortest route for the South-East geo-political zone to produce the president after their eight years instead of waiting for another 16 years.

“It is rather surprising to me that Chief Edwin Clark didn’t call the majority of other Southerners including governors working against the South-East to order or the names he called me.

“What did you say or do when all the aspirants from South-South and South-West were buying forms to run against South Easterners who have always supported them.

“I know some people want us to keep quiet and then allow other Southerners take turn of South-East. If you meant well for the South-East, you could have discouraged other aspirants against running for president.

“Nothing stops the South supporting only presidential aspirants from the South-East.

“The betrayers are those who don’t care about South-East. We are wiser,’’ Kalu said.

The former governor of Abia further told Clark that majority of the Southerners in his party, the Peoples Democratic Party were secretly supporting a North Easterner to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The welfare of my people is a passion that is driving me, I am not doing anything to advance my personal interest or seek personal glorification.

“I also lost my businesses fighting for the political interest of the Igbos. I cannot betray them now if I didn’t do it yesterday,’’ Kalu said.

Igbos should speak up against killings -Former Aviation minister, Chidoka

Former Aviation Minister, Osita Chidoka, has expressed shock and sadness over the incessant killings in the Southeast region with emphasis on the military couple in Imo state, adding that it was high time the Igbos speak up,TheNewsGuru.com can confirm.

Chidoka who made this statement on Monday said he watched the video clip referred to the act as a sacrilege and desercation of igboland.

He added that killing a woman whose crime is that she has a job to keep body and soul together “is tragic and unpardonable”.

“Our culture and spiritual belief system do not permit the killing of Women, Nwa okpu. It is evil. Evil has entered our land”, said the ex-Corps Marshall.

AviatChidoka recalled that the Igbos suffered for the kidnap and selling of their people during the slave trade era.

The forebears, according to him, will turn in their graves, as the foundation of Igboland community has been violently shaken by misplaced anger.

Chidoka said the South-East has entered a high conflict stage, where all forms of evil are perpetrated and condoned under the guise of a fight for justice.

He added that the blood of the murdered woman beheaded by a man born of a woman will seek justice against everyone.

“All Town Unions, Traditional Rulers, Church leaders, women societies, and right-thinking Igbo people should speak up now.”

The statement insists it is wrong to kill people for who they are or where they work.

Chidoka said women and disadvantaged groups must be respected, adding that killing unarmed people is a crime against humanity.

  • Why Igbos are better off staying in Nigeria – Uzodinma

Why Igbos are better off staying in Nigeria – Uzodinma

Imo State governor, Hope Uzodinma on Saturday said Igbos are better off staying in Nigeria other than starting new lives elsewhere.

The governor stated this yesterday in the state capital Owerri at the presentation of his book, “Reflections on the Igbo Question”.

Uzodimma reasoned that the model of democracy Nigeria currently practices does not seem to be offering the federating units “a holistic sense of belonging, seasoned by equality, justice and the rule of law,” adding that “the original federal project secured by our founding fathers has fallen apart.”

He urged Ndigbo not to despair or be intimidated but to “insist on our inalienable birthright as citizens of Nigeria, who must coexist with other ethnic nationalities as equal partners.

He noted two things about the Igbo existence in Nigeria, the first being that they “have not had a fair deal from project Nigeria since the end of the civil war. They have continued to cry to the high heavens over the sordid dilemma they face in their own country. I believe we have cried enough and it is time to wipe our tears.

“The second is that Igbo are citizens of Nigeria by birth. They should never allow themselves to be cajoled out of their father’s land and inheritance.”

The governor reasoned that the Igbo urgently need to rediscover their spirit of enterprise that helped them to survive the harsh socioeconomic environment after the civil war, including the “twenty pounds to every Igbo man” saga.

He said the Igbo, despite all the challenges, “are still better off staying in Nigeria,” because with their God-given talents and dominance of trade, commerce, real estate, they can excel in Nigeria.

“We also have a huge landmass to conquer, dominate and exploit. We have boundless markets to tap into. We have unassailable ingenuity and opportunities presented to us to explore to emerge leaders again in this land of Nigeria that we are equal owners,” Uzodimma said.

He urged young Igbo not to be discouraged by the artificial hurdles in their way.

Uzodimma said: “I also don’t want them to continue to be frustrated by the deliberate policies of exclusion. Instead, I want them to be focused on the larger picture of liberation through technology, trade and commerce through which we can dominate Nigeria and dictate the pace of development.

“Indeed, when the Jews found themselves in a similar situation such as Igbos of Nigeria, they simply used their talents to force the world to accede to their legitimate demand. Through technology and the media, the Jews now call the shots in major countries of the world including, the United States of America.”

My friend, His Excellency, Anyim Pius Anyim, late last week braved the odds and, came out to declare his interest in vying for the presidency of Nigeria, presumably under the People Democratic Party, PDP. As we say in Warri, he was very categorical when he declared that weda or wedant, that is, whether the PDP zones the Presidential slot to the South East or not, he is going to contest for the position.

His declaration came at a time most people were beginning to question the genuineness of the campaign by the South East geo-political zone that it is about time the rest of the country allows the Igbos produce a President of Igbo origin. It also came a few days after the Economic and Financial Crime Commission detained him for alleged involvement in a corruption case.

Nevertheless, Anyim’s entrance has opened, what we expect to be, a floodgate of people who will come out to signify their interest in the office. As most people would have noticed in the media, Nigerians were beginning to ask where the aspirants, of South East origin, who want to be President, are. Social media post after Social media posts, and articles, and gossip corners, in the newspapers were beginning to be swarmed with comments taunting the genuineness of the quest. Therefore, Senator Anyim, a former Senate President and Secretary to Government of the Federation, coming out, at the time he did, surely will assuage anxieties in these quarters, a little.

True, there have been posturings here and there, by people we suspect are interested in vying for the office. True too, Kingsley Moghalu, the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria has left no one in doubt that he is still interested in the office he vied for two and half years ago, but made no significant impact.

Peter Obi, of course, by body language, posturing and the many engaging media interactions he has been having, has left the impression that he has his eyes firmly fixed on contesting for the position. That is, until the Pandora Box global group of investigative media organisations exposed a soft under belly of the former Governor of Anambra state. He is said to have created a shell company in one of the tax havens where he lodged millions of dollars. Though he has not been directly accused of lodging slush funds in the account, he has been hard put in defending why he needed such an account and why he did not declare it in his assets declaration forms to the Code of Conduct Bureau.

Then there is Orji Uzor Kalu, the former Governor of Abia state, currently a senator. Convicted by a court of competent jurisdiction of humongous corruption charges, he was sprung out of Kuje Prisons, Abuja, where he was serving his term, on technicalities. He is now strutting about in the braggadocio of a well connected Nigerian politician, wanting to be considered for the office of the President of the Federal Republic. Before you think his quest is a joke, that he should be nursing his alleged guilt in silence, and seeking penance before God, remember that he is a man well beloved in Aso Rock, a man with seemingly wide tentacles in the north of Nigeria and is well connected politically and economically. The same Nigerian courts which convicted him, are today the same ones he is using to do the usual dribbling dance of politicians who know how to work the courts to stay out of prison. Remember, impunity has no consequences in Nigeria. Until another court of competent jurisdiction declares him guiltless, his dream of ruling the country is seemingly in jeopardy.

Rochas Okorocha, the statues loving former Governor of Imo state, who his people hailed at a time with the unkind sobriquet of Okoro-Hausa; Ken Nnamani, a former senate president who recently launched a deodorising book, eulogising his allege role in the President Obasanjo third term imbroglio; Governor Umahi of Ebonyi, who not too long ago dumped the PDP, under which he became a two term governor in the hope that the presidential race will be handed to him on a platter by the APC; and a host of others, I suspect, will soon come out to indicate their interest in the office. Indeed, very soon, the same Nigerians who were asking “where are the Igbo aspirants” will be the same ones who will be wondering why every Emeka, every Chinedu and every Ngozi, who know they stand no chance in hell of making it to Aso Rock, now wants people to believe they are the long awaited president, of Igbo origin.

In that all comers quest, the fear is, some of these so called aspirants will turn their aspiration into a bazaar, a commodity to be sold to the highest bidder and will be willing tools to pull even the credible aspirants down. We have seen it before. That is what has played out and is still playing out in Anambra state, where the governorship election is scheduled to hold this Saturday. Positioning as running for the office of President of Nigeria, will be seen, by these group of aspirants, as a meal ticket. To most of these hustlers politicians, their transactional politics has everything to do with agitation to have an Igbo man or woman become the President of Nigeria. It is a business and political opportunity to be exploited fully, in the interest of self.

Unfortunately that informs my fear that even if the position is zoned, by the APC and PDP, to the South East, it will still elude the zone. This, from what we all know, is because most Igbo politicians are not given to enthroning group or zonal interests above personal ones. (The average Igbo politician is a replica of the average South South politician: It is either them or no one at all). If care is not taken, these hustlers will, with their own hands, frustrate the serious aspirants, hand the presidency over to the north in the hope that they, the betraying politician, will be the chosen vice president thereafter.

I know i am fishing in troubled waters but the truth is, unlike in the north where consensus is easily built, where the group decides and the politicians tow the line, there is no such amity among the South Easterners. There is no group or leadership cadre among them, who will compel only a decent number of truly credible, viable and sellable candidates to be in the race. They are not like the South West politicians who are also very astute in the political game, where their northern colleagues are unrivalled masters. For example, the East cannot boast of their own Bola Tinubu who has singlehandedly superintended over the political affairs of the South West in the last, at least ten years, as the main, if not sole authority in deciding who got what and where. Unlike Afenifere whose voice carries a lot of weight among the political class, Ohaneze Ndigbo, currently headed by George Obiozor, is a tolerated toothless bull dog. The Baba sope and the Rankadede philosophy that governor the north and West politics, is evidently absent in the South East and South South, to their eternal disadvantage. For the Igbos, it is even more so: it is everyone to himself! The mismanagement of IPOB/ESN, as a major bargaining tool, is a mighty testament in this regard.

Above apart, as a people, there is nothing in the political space to indicate that the Igbos truly want the office badly. Emotional ventilation, yes. Strategic thrust, no. There is nothing to indicate that they have so embedded themselves, positioned themselves, and built enough formidable alliances in any of the two parties to show that they can pull their request through. True, in the newly reconfigured PDP, an Igbo man, Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu, is the National Secretary, a position ceded to Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state who wants to be President or Vice President to Governor Tambuwal of Sokoto state. As all pundits know, power is never willingly given, it is fought for, negotiated and sometimes forcefully taken.

There is nothing on ground to show that the Igbos are in pole position for consideration: no credible, formidable alliances, no strategic thrusts, no unity of purpose. How do the Igbos want to achieve their dream? Apart from Rotimi Amaechi, Anyim, Obi, and a few others, my mind tells me, those in the race now and the one we suspect will soon throw in their hat into the ring, only truly want to be vice president to any northern candidate the PDP or APC will throw up. How i wish they will prove me wrong.

2023 Presidency: Why Igbos may not stand a chance – Dokpesi

Chairman Emeritus of DAAR Communications Plc, Chief Raymond Dokpesi says the separatist activities of Nnamdi Kanu, detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) would jeopardise the chances of the South-East region to produce the president of Nigeria in 2023.

In a statement on Monday, Dokpesi stressed that he is a firm believer in a united, indivisible Nigeria.

He stated that the emergence of IPOB and its influence across the South-East “has complicated and undermined the agitation for patriotic Nigerians of Igbo extraction to lead this nation as far as the 2023 election is concerned.”

The PDP chieftain added that if an Igbo President is voted in, Kanu would use militant tactics to blackmail and force the President to declare the South-East independent of Nigeria.

He said, “On the surrender of Biafra to Nigeria, Yakubu Gowon, declared ‘no Victor, no vanquished’ but clearly, since, the regions that have determined leadership have used this against the South-East and denied Igbos the opportunity to lead. Should that be used against the leaders and sons of the South-East today? Of course not!

“I have publicly come out to support and call on a Southeastern presidential candidate in the recent past, but the emergence of IPOB and its influence across the South-East has complicated and undermined the agitation for patriotic Nigerians of Igbo extraction to lead this nation as far as the 2023 election is concerned.

“If nobody has told Ohanaeze Ndigbo before, the concern today from some other regions is that if Nnamdi Kanu plays the role of Aguiyi Ironsi in leading a militant revolt against constitutional government in the South-East under Igbo presidency, the president will be pressured by his base to facilitate the UN processes for the South-East to call for independence from Nigeria. Thus an Igbo President may be compromised in protecting the political and geographic boundaries of Nigeria whilst Nigeria remains under the threat of IPOB’s secessionist activities.

“Don’t shoot me, I’m just a messenger. It is unfair but neither the South-South nor the South-East nor the North-East has the votes combined to determine the presidency on their own. We have to negotiate with other regions and where prominent leaders express such concerns based on the similarities of our history and contemporary circumstances, it indicates to me that the South-East is not trusted with the Presidency in 2023. It indicates to me that the leaders of the South-East have not done enough before now in dealing with and addressing the challenge that IPOB poses to their aspirations in leading Nigeria. Why and what to do to change this narrative is a question for leaders and politicians from the South-East to determine but you can see and understand why we in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must take a realistic, pragmatic and strategic approach towards supporting the North-East zone for the presidency in 2023.

“In Atiku Abubakar, the South-East not only has a friend and a detribalised Nigerian who understands the pains, frustrations as genuine aspirations of the people of the South-East but also is a believer in the restructuring of Nigeria, which both in the short term and in the long term, is necessary and critical to the growth and development of Nigeria in general and the minority regions in particular.

“By supporting Atiku Abubakar from the North-East to victory in 2023, the rotation of power across Nigeria will have come full cycle and I believe that the agitation for a South-East presidency will be better accepted and appreciated by the incumbency and other regions in subsequent elections after 2023.

“So taken in totality I do not intend to offend the South-East or any of its eminent sons who are more than qualified to lead this nation. The South-South and South-East regions have already produced PDP presidents in the fourth republic, so we have had 14 years in the presidency, while the North has only had 2-years under PDP.

“The nomination of President Goodluck Jonathan at the 2014 PDP Presidential Convention weakened our support in the North and ultimately led to the APC and President Buhari taking over government in 2015. We need to retrace our steps as a party. We need to consolidate our base in the South-South and South-East and we need to reach out across other regions of this country presenting a detribalised Nigerian that will be accepted and trusted to build the best ‘all-star’ Nigerian team to get us out of our present quagmire without carrying the baggage of IPOB undermining their credibility.”
