‘Man Utd signed Ighalo instead of me’

Dalian Professional striker, Salomon Rondon, has claimed he was close to joining Manchester United last month.

United were in the market for a frontman, after Marcus Rashford was ruled out for four months with a back problem.

Red Devils boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, also tried to bring in Josh King from Bournemouth, but eventually decided on Odion Ighalo.

Rondon says he waited for a phone call from his agent for an update on negotiations, before finding out about the Ighalo deal.

“They started to talk to my agent and I was just waiting by my phone for a decision, maybe for the lawyers, but then I saw Ighalo had signed.

“It didn’t get to the stage where an offer was made or anything like that, but I think it was really close.

“It’s decisions again and they obviously decided Ighalo was the best decision for them. I’ve played against him and I’m pleased for him,” the 30-year-old told The Athletic.

Rondon previously played in England with Newcastle, where he scored 11 goals in 32 Premier League appearances.

Manchester United beat Chelsea 2-0 on Ighalo’s debut

Manchester United moved to within three points of fourth-placed Chelsea with a smash and grab 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire on Monday.

Odion Ighalo was introduced into the match in the 90th minute.

Chelsea had two goals disallowed by VAR reviews and were furious Maguire was not sent-off early on for an off-the-ball kick out at Michy Batshuayi.

However, Blues boss Frank Lampard cut a frustrated figure as the flaws in both boxes which have seen his side win just four of their last 14 league games were exposed once more against ordinary opposition.

Victory lifts United up to seventh and within two points of Tottenham in fifth, which could be good enough to qualify for the Champions League next season pending Manchester City’s appeal again a two-season ban from European competition.

Lampard made a bold call before kick-off by again dropping the most expensive goalkeeper in football history, Kepa Arrizabalaga, to the bench in favour of the 38-year-old Willy Caballero.

Batshuayi also started with Tammy Abraham ruled out by injury and Lampard’s anger at missing out on a striker in the January window was borne out by a poor night for the misfiring Belgium forward.

Chelsea suffered another injury blow early on when N’Golo Kante hobbled off and the France World Cup winner is now a doubt to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League next week.

The loss of Kante did not disrupt the home side’s early rhythm as Reece James and Willian fired just wide.

Chelsea were then furious Maguire somehow escaped without being sent-off for kicking Batshuayi after the two collided in front of the dugouts.

The former Marseille attacker then squandered the first of a host of chances by firing wide from Mason Mount’s cut-back.

    – One-way traffic -Chelsea’s sense of injustice increased when Willian was harshly booked for diving as he went down under a challenge from Bruno Fernandes looking for a penalty.

United had not made Caballero make a single save before going in front a minute before the break when Martial planted a brilliant header into the far corner from Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cross.

There was still time for Batshuayi to miss another chance before half-time when he skewed wide from a narrow angle.

The one-way traffic continued at the start of the second period as Mount hit the post and a brave block from Wan-Bissaka deflected Pedro’s goal-bound effort behind.

But even when Chelsea did get the ball in the net through substitute Kurt Zouma, the goal was ruled out by VAR for a push on Brandon Williams by Cesar Azpilicueta.

Fernandes was unable to make much of an impact from open play in his second United appearance since a £47 million ($62 million) move from Sporting Lisbon.

However, the Portuguese international is a huge threat from set-pieces and nearly caught Caballero out with a free-kick that crashed back off the post.

Moments later, Fernandes provided his first assist for the Red Devils with a corner which Maguire powered home.

Lampard had seen enough from Batshuayi and handed Olivier Giroud a rare appearance off the bench for the final quarter.

The French striker thought he had given Chelsea a lifeline with a near post header, but was ruled offside after a VAR review.

Ighalo banned from Man Utd training ground

Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo has yet to set foot in the club’s training ground since joining on loan from Shanghai Shenhua, British media reported on Thursday.

Media reports said this was after he was told to stay away due to concerns over the coronavirus.

The flu-like virus has killed over 1,300 people and infected around 60,000 in China after it first emerged in Wuhan late last year.

The Times reported Ighalo has been training at the National Taekwondo Centre in Manchester since arriving on loan from the Chinese club almost two weeks ago.

The mandated 14-day incubation period will come to an end this weekend and Ighalo is expected to join first-team training ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League match against Chelsea on Monday.

The former Watford striker missed Manchester United’s mid-season training camp in Spain but has been building his match fitness with performance coach Wayne Richardson, The Times reported.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed earlier this week that Ighalo would be in the squad to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Ighalo ready for Man Utd debut against Chelsea

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Odion Ighalo is available to make his Manchester United debut against Chelsea.

The Old Trafford outfit are scheduled to play Chelsea next Monday and Ighalo is now expected to travel with the squad to Stamford Bridge.

The Nigerian striker joined the club on loan from Shanghai Greenland Shenhua until the end of the season and, as a lifelong Reds supporter, the passionate new no.25 is desperate to get started.

Although Ighalo is not with the players who have traveled to southern Spain for training this week, for reasons out of the club’s control, Solskjaer is keen to quickly integrate him into the team.

Below is what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told Manchester United official website:

Odion Ighalo is back in Manchester and we’ll link up with him at the weekend. How much are you looking forward to seeing him on the training pitch, and is he available for Chelsea away?

“Yeah, he is going to travel with us. We will just see his fitness work this week and I think we will get him sharp. We want to integrate him as quickly as we can because, of course, he is desperate to play for us.”

Ole, how is the week going for you so far?

“Yeah, it’s very good. I think the boys enjoyed a break, they needed a break, but now they are back, focused and they have been working well.”

Are these conditions everything that you hoped for?

“Yeah, of course with the weather back home as well, this has been an even bigger plus for us. Being in Europe, because the travel isn’t too far, is also a good point because we don’t have too many days before we have to go back and get ready for Chelsea.”

  • Coronavirus stops Ighalo from United’s trip to Spain

Coronavirus stops Ighalo from United’s trip to Spain

Former Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo, has been dropped by Manchester United from their training camp in Spain as a result of fears he might be denied re-entry to England by the United Kingdom immigration.

The highest goal scorer at the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cairo had joined United from the Chinese club, Shanghai Shenhua, on a loan until the end of the season.

But because of issues relating to the coronavirus, which has affected thousands in China and caused hundreds of deaths, United was concerned travel restrictions might be introduced that could affect Ighalo.

Describing their decision as “a precautionary measure”, United said there was no guarantee the 30-year-old would have been cleared by UK immigration to re-enter the country.

He was living in China until as recently as last week.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told MUTV: “Odion will stay in Manchester because since he has come from China in the last 14 days, the news of the virus there [means] we’re not sure if he’s going to be allowed back into England if he leaves the country again.

“So he’s staying here working with a personal coach on an individual programme and his family then can settle in England as well. That’s a plus.

“Of course he might have liked to have come with the players and got to know them, but we don’t want to take that risk [of potential border restrictions tightening].”

Nigerian Ighalo could make his United debut in the Premier League match at Chelsea on February 17.

Scott McTominay will be in United’s travelling party to Spain, Solskjaer confirmed, as the midfielder closes on a return to full fitness after a knee injury.

However, both Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford miss out, as the pair continue to battle back to full health after their respective ankle and back injuries.

  • Ighalo to make N1.4bn in six months

Ighalo to make N1.4bn in six months

Odion Ighalo will reportedly earn the sum of N1.4bn (£2.98m) during his six months loan spell at Manchester United.

TheNewsGuru reports that as of Thursday, the exchange rate from naira to a British pound sterling was put at N469.41.

Ighalo joined United on loan until the end of the season in a surprise move as a cover upfront for Marcus Rashford, who is facing an extended spell out after suffering a double stress fracture in his back.

The former Nigeria international, who took a pay cut in order to complete his dream deadline day move from Shanghai Shenhua to Manchester United, earns a whopping N60m (£130,000) per week. He earned £300,000 per-week at Shanghai Shenhua.

In a month, the 30-year-old will receive N244m (£520,000) and in his six months at Old Trafford, the former Watford striker will collect N1.4bn (£2.98m) as salary.

Ighalo is currently undergoing a personal fitness programme this week, in a bid to get up to speed, having arrived into Manchester from China last Sunday.

The 30-year-old forward, who will wear the No.25 shirt, is self-assured he can boost United’s attack, which has struggled without Rashford, who he regards as one of the best in Europe at the moment.

“They (Manchester United) have a striker that stays mostly in the middle, because (Anthony) Martial likes to come from the side, even Rashford and all that,” Ighalo said in an interview with Sky Sports.

“So, you need someone in the middle that can keep the ball, hold the ball, because I’ve watched so many United games.

“So, they need a physicality there up front to keep the ball, to give and to make some movement, which I believe, if everything goes well, I can add to the team.”

  • Man Utd warned about Ighalo’s fitness

Man Utd warned about Ighalo’s fitness

Former Watford coach, Quique Sanchez Flores, has warned Manchester United that Odion Ighalo will need “one month to recover full rhythm”.

Flores worked with the Nigerian striker at Vicarage road, where he netted 39 goals across two-and-a-half seasons, with 16 of those coming in the Premier League.

Ighalo has signed a six-month loan deal with United and arrived in the UK over the weekend from Chinese side, Shanghai Shenhua.

“Mainly, the problem is how they train in China. It is not the same as in England.

“Is he really ready for first-team matches in the Premier League because the physical difference is so big? He probably needs one month to recover the full rhythm.

“The good thing is he knows his body well, works hard on injury prevention and he is always working after training.

“I should say, also, that I felt in China, he gave exactly the same effort and quality as he gave me four years ago. We had the feeling in China that he could recover a high level with any team in Europe,” Flores told The Athletic.

Flores however believes that Ighalo will prove to be a good addition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

“I have an amazing impression of the player. I fell in love with him. As a guy, he’s professional. He’s a straight arrow. As a person, his life is private. He has strong Christian values and he is respectful.

“As a player, it is difficult to explain Ighalo. His first quality is he can protect the ball and he gives time to the team to get up the field and win the second ball. It’s so difficult to get the ball from him. He’s stronger than he looks.

“Four years ago, when we put ball in the space, he was also super fast. Now, with five years difference, he is a bit different… but he will always be fine in a physical battle.

“We played him up front in a two with Troy Deeney and they knew each other inside out but he is absolutely fine to play as a lone frontman, too. One of his most valuable qualities is that his team-mates very quickly learn his strengths and he adapts very well,” he added.

Financial details of Ighalo’s move to Manchester United

Manchester United have signed former Watford striker and Nigerian international, Odion Ighalo from Shanghai Shenhua on loan until the end of the season.

The deal to bring the 30-year-old Nigeria international to Old Trafford contains no option to buy.

Ighalo, who is still in China but is expected to fly to the UK in the next few days, scored 39 goals in 99 matches for Watford between 2014 and 2017, BBC reports.

He then moved to the Chinese Super League, first with Changchun Yatai.

After two seasons he moved to Shanghai Shenhua and has scored 10 times in 19 games.

His form for his country has been eye-catching, finishing as top scorer in African Cup of Nations qualifying with seven goals, before scoring five at the tournament during the summer.

Daily Mail on Thursday evening published further details about Ighalo’s deal to Manchester United, which is believed to be imminent.

According to the report, Manchester United will pay a third of Ighalo’s wages during his time at Old Trafford.

This works out at £100,000 a week. Ighalo, who has just under two years left on his contract with Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai Shenhua, is currently earning an astronomical £300,000-a-week.

United will also pay Shanghai Shenhua a loan fee of between £2 million and £4 million.

It’s understood that United will also have an option to sign Ighalo on a permanent deal at the end of his loan.

While Ighalo wouldn’t have been top of United fans’ lists prior to the January transfer window, many of them will be relieved that a striker is arriving to ease the burden on Martial and Greenwood.

Transfer deadline: Man Utd in last-minute deal for Ighalo

Manchester United have turned their attention to Odion Ighalo in their increasingly frantic search for a striker after Bournemouth wanted £40million for Josh King.

United conceded defeat in their bid to land Bournemouth’s King after their offer of around £20m on Thursday night was quickly rebuffed and described as ‘a joke’ by senior Bournemouth officials.

United are now focusing on other forwards on their shortlist with ex-Watford striker Ighalo, 30, now under serious consideration as the clock ticks towards tonight’s 11pm deadline.

Ighalo left the Premier League for China three years ago and has, most recently, been at Shanghai Greenland Shenhua.

Ighalo in surprise move to dump Chinese club for Man Utd

THERE are strong indications last night that Manchester United m ay strike a deal for former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo before the end of the January Transfer Window today.

Since last week, words were rife that the struggling English Premier League side had been linked with a shock move for the former Watford striker United from Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua as a late injury replacement for Marcus Rashford.

English tabloid Daily Mirror further hinted last night that Ighalo is mulling over the possible switch from China to England following the spread of the Coronavirus in the Asian country.

“Ighalo is currently in limbo due to the coronavirus health scare, which has forced the Chinese Super League to delay the start of the 2020 season,” declared London Daily Mirror. “As a result of the delay, Ighalo is due to fly to Europe later today(Thursday) , which would allow him to put pen to paper on a move before the window slams shut on Friday.”

Incidentally, the Chinese Football Association (CFA) had expressed fears that the rapidly spreading of coronavirus might force several stars out of the Chinese Super League while announcing the postponement of all domestic games.

“Chinese Super League stars could be tempted into looking for new clubs after the Chinese Football Association (CFA) announced the postponement of all domestic games due to the rapidly spreading coronavirus,” Sky Sports Football tweeted the CFA notice.

Only on Monday, sources close to Ighalo informed NationSport that the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) top scorer is unperturbed with the Manchester United transfer rumours.

“Ighalo is not disturbed with the rumours linking him to Manchester United and that’s why he has chosen not to make any statement about the transfer speculation,” the source close to the player told NationSport few days ago.

Just last year, Ighalo reportedly turned down a short-loan move to Catalan giants, FC Barcelona, saying he preferred a longer contact than an ‘a six-month loan and strictly as a back-up striker’.
