  • [Video] Social Media is a technology for the criminally minded – Police IG

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, may have stirred another controversy after saying social media “is a technology for the criminally minded”.

Idris said this while fielding questions from newsmen shortly after attending a function in Abuja on Friday.

The Police boss was asked what the Force is currently doing about restructuring the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) as more Nigerians are calling for the end of police unit.

Responding, Idris who expressed dismay at the question, said: “You see, you ahave to be careful about this clamouring.

“Social media is a technology available to those that are criminally minded and we have to be careful on how we respond to this clamouring as you are saying.

“SARS is a unit of the police that I believe should be sustained, what we are doing is to ensure that they are properly trained, and wwe are providing facilities for them that will make work easy for them.

“But I have to tell you that they are doing a very wonderful job.”

  • IGP’S BUMBLING: The price for nepotism – Joe Iniodu

    By Joe Iniodu

Many were born to hear words like: tribalism, nepotism, ethnicity and clannishness-all share close semantic quality – but never knew the welter of its destructive import until recently when the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris delivered in Kano a speech that would go down in history as a national shame and evidently the rise and fall of Nigeria. One would be galled and forced into this damning conclusion if one has watched the video of Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria’s first Prime Minister when he addressed the Commonwealth in 1960 shortly after the country’s independence. Balewa exuded confidence, showed candour and was colourful to the delight of Nigerians. He was just a Grade II Teacher.

But IGP Ibrahim Kpotun Idris from Niger State who was born in 1959 and graduated from Ahmadu Bello University with a degree in Agricultural Studies could not sustain that oratorical flourish that underlined Balewa’s speech of 1960. Before Nigerian audience, IGP Idris, the number one policeman in the country bumbled and fumbled to the consternation of many and eternal shame of the institution he represents.

Many are wont to ask, how did Ibrahim Idris ascend the rank of IGP? Was his record of service including courses attended not examined? Was a dispassionate forensic check on him conducted? What is themodus operandi in appointing an IGP? What is the role of the Police Service Commission in such appointments? Was there any influence peddling in the appointment? Did he deserve to be appointed as IGP as at the time the appointment was consummated? Can Ibrahim Idris do Nigeria proud in event of the need to represent the country on global stage? Answers to these questions are necessary to enable an appreciation of the process that brought about his emergence and consequential national shame that today confronts that revered law enforcement institution. It would help in exposing or dousing the rumour of influence peddling which the presidency is being widely accused.

The story holds that the IGP while a Commissioner of Police in Kano State in 2015 did the untoward to enhance the electoral fortune of PMB. It is on record that the resident electoral commissioner in Kano State died with his family members in a mysterious inferno 6 days after the announcement of the election results and in circumstances allegedly traceable to a protest he mounted against a seemingly doctored election result of the State which he had earlier submitted. It is said that for looking the other way while the barbarity was perpetrated, Idris had to be rewarded with the position of IGP. To achieve this, he was given double promotion with 21 AIGs and 4 DIGs ahead of him forcefully retired. If such brazen display of jaundiced decision is not contemptuous to national interest, I don’t know what else could be.

In whatever way we look at this incident, the Nigerian nation and the people are the losers. The cost invested in the training of the prematurely retired officers is an avoidable drain to the coffers of the nation. The alleged deliberate abdication of responsibility which may have led to loss of lives of the INEC Commissioner and his family is a moral blight on the nation. The encouragement of under age voters and the overall electoral heist that was perpetrated in Kano and which gave APC the fraudulent advantage was a threat to the nation’s democracy. Let us ponder at a scenario of Jonathan’s resistance given the benefit of intelligence report he had in his possession and reflect on where the nation would have possibly been in such situation. One does not need to be discerning to know that the nation would have morphed into violence of carnage proportion which would have acquiesced with Buhari’s prediction of 2015 that “the dog and the baboon will be soaked in blood”. But Jonathan’s calm and patriotic demeanour averted that bloodletting and calamity.

But how did we get here? Because somebody allowed his personal interest to take precedent over national interest. When such an act is exhibited, the quotient of patriotism or even nationalism in the individuals who facilitate the absurdity are brought to question. There are insinuations that Mr. President has shown tacit support to the abnormal ascension of the current IGP to that exalted office. If that is true, then the President’s level of patriotism and willingness to take the nation to new heights are suspect and questionable. If he could willfully bring a mediocre and an incompetent officer to lead a foremost security architecture at a period like this, then his commitment to a pan Nigeria Project leaves a lot to be desired.

The Inspector-General of Police has not helped public perception that he is enjoying the unfettered protection of Mr. President. His practice in impunity is legendary. About thrice, he has flouted the invitation of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria even to the extent of approaching the court to halt any action against him whatsoever or any further invitation. No man can act in such a recalcitrant manner in a democratic setting that he is an appointee unless he knows where his help would come from. In this respect, it is obvious that his help “cometh from above”.

The IG’s show of shame and obvious public satisfaction in his continuous derision can be explained as an intercourse of man’s power, people’s helplessness and the supremacy of God over all things. The IG climbed the podium and lost self comportment. He stuttered through a written speech with the incoherence unlikely of a primary school pupil. He blundered to the bewilderment of the huge audience that were sitted in the hall. He proved eloquently that he is a minion in an outsized office and that his arrival in that office lacks the requisite moral rectitude.

The defence to the IG’s tasteless outing has also been specious and primitive. They have argued that the IG was charmed. What a ridiculous and absurd opinion! The police as an institution does not recognize the existence of extra-terrestrial powers, how come it sees this possibility in an incident involving their number one man in the country with strenuous efforts to give the claim veracity. They have also said that the video that is trending on the matter is doctored, but one can only persuade public opinion in such doctored materials if the character in question displayed traits that are “doctorable”. The outlandish claims in the many views of different officers raising submissions of defence for the IGP are just face-saving with some bordering on arrant inanities. Let us beg them to help us retain our sanity, because what they are doing as defence to the IG is actually unprofessional damage control that deepens the damage.

However, there are so much to learn from the current development in our country. It is a clarion call for all patriotic Nigerians to stand up and be counted as they unanimously say ‘NO’ to nepotism, clannishness and tribalism. These vices produce and protect mediocrity at the expense of merit. That is the crossroad Nigeria has found itself today. While PDP was in power, all IGPs were produced on merit. Even the IG who presided over the election that produced Mr. President before the coming of Solomon Arase was a Northerner. But he merited the office he occupied and was not denied on account of his tribe. The actions of the APC led administration which tend to promote nepotism, ethnicity, religious bigotry, clannishness and other awkward tendencies all dovetailing into mediocrity cannot help this prostrate nation to rise. The central government led by APC is fraudulently upping the career of those who would willfully do its bidding but at the peril of national unity.

  • Buhari, IGP observe Jumaat prayer in Aso Rock

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday observed his Jumaat prayer along with other Muslims faithful in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Among those in the mosque during the Jumaat prayer were the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris and Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai.

When the IGP went to exchange pleasantries with the President at the end of the prayer, President Buhari asked him: “Are you back?”

Idris in recent weeks had not been in good term with the Senate as he failed to honour three invitations extended to him over increasing killings by herdsmen and harsh treatment against Senator Dino Melaye by the Police.

The Senate had subsequently passed a vote of no confidence on the IGP, describing him as “enemy of democracy’’ and unfit to hold any public office anywhere in the world.

The Senate President Bukola Saraki, on Thursday, accused the IGP of trying to implicate him and Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, in a criminal case involving some suspected cultists.

Following the accusation, the Senate has raised a 10-man panel to meet with President Buhari over the allegation leveled against the IGP by Saraki.

  • Murder suspects allegedly fingers Saraki, Gov. Abdulfattah as sponsors

Barely few days after Senate President, Bukola Saraki raised allegation that the Nigeria Police Force is planning to blackmail him, murder suspects arrested by the Kwara State Police Command in Ilorin and transported to Abuja, have reportedly named Saraki and Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed as their sponsors.

This was contained in the confessional statement made by the suspects, according to SaharaReporters. .

The suspects reportedly confessed to have been on the payroll of the Kwara State government and Mandate Office of Saraki.

One of the suspects and leader of the killer squad, who is the son of Salihu Woru, the spokesman of Magajis in Ilorin Emirate, told the police that he was placed on salary Grade Level 16, while his colleagues are on Levels 10 to 15.

The suspects also said that they were being paid from the Office of the Senate President, who allegedly gave them Toyota Corolla cars a few months ago as a way of securing the loyalty ahead of the 2019 elections.

The suspects, in their statement, reportedly said those marked on their list for execution before the election are: Kayode Oyin, Yinka Aluko, Baba Rex, one Mustapha and one Ogunlowo.

A Police source told Sahara Reporters that bank statements retrieved from the suspects indicated that they received money on a monthly basis from Saraki and the Kwara State government.

According to the report, the Senate President and Ahmed may soon be invited by the Police.

Saraki had on Wednesday raised an alarm during plenary of a plan by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to implicate him using some arrested murder suspects.

  • Transmission speech: IGP Idris says video doctored

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris Kpotun has said the viral video of his transmission speech that tumbled social media in the course of the week was doctored.

IGP Idris defended the transmission speech video in a #AskThePolice TweetChat that was personally anchored by the IGP himself on Twitter on Thursday.

“Thank you for your question. Yes it was doctored,” he responded when he was asked: “I saw a video yesterday on social media about the Inspector General of Police not able to read his own speech. Some of us suspect it is a doctored video, can you clarify that please?”

However, reactions continued to trail the IGP’s response all through the course of the TweetChat as participants continued to prod the IGP for the Police to actually clear the air by posting the undoctored video.

TheNewsGuru reports the IGP’s transmission speech incidence happened in Kano on Monday, May 14, 2018, where he went to commission the Force Technical Intelligence Unit.

“I mean, transmission, I mean effort, that the transmission cooperation to transmission, I mean transmission to have effect, ehm, apprehend, I mean, apprehensive towards the recommendation, recommended formation effective and effect, I mean, apprehensive at the transmission of… and transmission and transmission for the effective in the police command,” Idris babbled in the video.

After several attempts to get his speech right, the IGP, struggling with his paper, apologised to his audience. “Sorry, I’m sorry please,” he said.

However, Ibrahim’s struggle did not end there. A man in suit joins him to help hold down his script, and even helped with the pronunciation of the words. But this didn’t make the reading any better for the IGP.

“All effective the transmission, other transmission, I can state without contradiction that I have commissioned what?

“Over transmission of, over transmission of, over all kidnapping, armed robbery and other heinous crimes, I mean, ehm, commission transmission, recommendation transmission” he continued.

While many attributed the IGP babbling to dyslexia, former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode Fani-Kayode, on Twitter said the IGP was a victim of dark spirits and satanic forces.

“Our I-G of Pol. needs prayers and we must treat him with compassion. What happened to him whilst reading his infamous “transmission” speech was not ordinary,” the former Aviation Minister stated.

“He is the victim of dark spirits and satanic forces. We must not gloat over it or laugh at him. Instead we must pray for him,” he added.

However, a critical observation of the transmission speech video shows that the IGP actually made certain blunders in his speech in Kano; but, however, not consistently as captured by the viral video.

The video that went viral was actually clipped at intervals from the original video and merged into the whole.

  • Transmission speech: IGP Idris under satanic forces

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, on Thursday calls for prayers for Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris Kpotun, stressing that the IGP’s infamous transmission speech blunder was not ordinary.

“Our I-G of Pol. needs prayers and we must treat him with compassion. What happened to him whilst reading his infamous “transmission” speech was not ordinary,” the former Aviation Minister stated.

TheNewsGuru reports a video footage showing IGP Idris emerged yesterday with the Police boss finding it difficult pronouncing words from an already prepared speech before him.

The incident took place in Kano on Monday, May 14, 2018, where he went to commission the Force Technical Intelligence Unit, according to the Voice of Liberty.

While many have attributed the IGP babbling to dyslexia, Fani-Kayode said the IGP was a victim of dark spirits and satanic forces.

“He is the victim of dark spirits and satanic forces. We must not gloat over it or laugh at him. Instead we must pray for him,” he said.

On three different occasions, the IGP Idris has refused to honour an invitation sent to him by the Senate.

The IGP was mandated to appear before the Senate to brief Nigerians on the killings within the country and the treatment meted out to Senator Dino Melaye.

The lawmakers got angry with the police boss because he gave no reason for his absence.

Also recently Senate President Bukola Saraki raised alarm of plots by IGP Idris to frame him up.

There have been calls for President Buhari to sack Idris for disobeying an order given to him to relocate to Benue state during the killings by Fulani herdsmen.

  • Police warns Saraki against interfering with investigation

Police warns Saraki against interfering with investigation

The Police Wednesday expressed shock over the allegation made by the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki that the Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Ibrahim Idris is plotting against him.

The Police said the claim was an attempt to divert the Police investigation into the killings of more than 11 innocent people from kwara State and other States of the Federation by the killer squad who operate under the guise of a cult group.

The Police also warned Saraki not to interfere with investigation noting that attempt to do so is an offence.

The Police while trying to defend its action of transferring the case highlighted some cases that were transferred from State commands to the Force headquarters.

It also explained that the transfer was in accordance with Police investigation procedures adding that the IGP had no vested interest in the case.

This is contained in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday by the Force Spokesman, ACP Jimoh Moshood.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to Press Statement credited to the Senate President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki of “Plot against him by IGP”.

“The Nigeria Police Force is shocked at the unbelievable claims, unverifiable allegations and unfounded accusations being peddled against the IGP by the Senate President, accusing the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris of plot and strategies against him to settle scores.

“The Force therefore wishes to categorically state that, there is no iota of truth in the allegation and false assertion by the Senate President of plot against him by the IGP to implicate the Kwara State Government and the Senate President in any criminal matter.

“Until investigation is concluded, any person (s) or group(s) who tries to interfere in the investigation process by action or utterances is committing an offence.”

    Giving more insight about the suspects mentioned by the Senate President, the police said: “To set the records straight, the Kwara State Police Command on the 11th of May, 2018, paraded the following suspects before the Media and the Public, namely;

Abolaji Safti Ojulari of Kankatu area, Ilorin, Lanre Mohammed Soliu a.k.a Askari of Ile Nda Compound, Ilorin, Azeez Moyaki of Moyaki Compound, Gambari Area Ilorin, Suleiman Babatunde of Gambari Area, Ilorin, Yusuf Habeeb of Kangile Village, Kulende, Ilorin and Umar Yahaya of Kangile Village, Kulende, Ilorin.

“The suspects admitted and confessed before the press and the public to have killed 11 innocent persons in kwara State and other States of the country.”

The Police said the suspects confessed to have killed their targets on the instructions of their sponsors.

Names of some of the victims who were killed in cold blood according to the Police are; “Bukola Ajikobi killed on 18/01/2016 at ajikobi Area in Ilorin, Azeez Lawal killed in February, 2018 at Oja oba area of Ilorin, Lateef (Surname unknown) killed February, 2018 at Ode Alfa Nda area of Ilorin, Jamiu (Surname unknown) killed in February 2018 at Idi ape area, Ilorin and One segun (Surname unknown) killed in September, 2017 at kankatu area of Ilorin.

Others are: “Wasiu (Surname unknown) killed in September 29, 2016 at Shao garage of Ilorin, Musiliu (Surname unknown) killed in February, 2018 at Shao Area Ilorin, Bayo Ajia killed in January 18, 2018 at taiwo Road, Ilorin, Another Lateef killed in January 2016 at Baboko Area of Ilorin, Abbey a student of Kwara Polytechnic killed in April, 2017 at Niger Road, Ilorin and Lanre (Surname unknown) killed on 23rd August, 2015 at Isale Aluko Area of Ilorin.”

On why the case was transferred to the Force Headquarters, Moshood said: “Consequent upon the public confessions of these vicious and notorious killer squad to the killings in cold blood of more than 11 innocent people in Kwara State and other States of the Federation, the statutory procedure and practice in the Force is that such a heinous crime and capital offence is transferred to the Force Headquarters for further investigation.

“This is to enable a thorough and discreet investigation into the crime.”

On whether the IGP has any special interest in the case, the statement stated: “It is pertinent to state that, there is no vested interest by the Inspector General of Police in the ongoing investigation into the several murders committed by this killer gang, other than ensuring that justice prevails in the matter.

“Nobody, no matter how highly placed would be allowed to interfere or obstruct Police investigation to pervert the course of justice.”

On some of the cases transferred to Abuja, Moshood said: “It is also imperative to let the public know that last year, suspects arrested over the mayhem and killings of innocent people in Ile-Ife, Osun State and those arrested in Southern Kaduna crisis in Kaduna State and suspects arrested in connection with Zaki-biam killings in Benue State were all transferred to the Force Headquarters, Abuja for further investigation before they were arraigned in court of competent jurisdiction.

“Therefore, transferring this hired assassin gang masquerading as cultists in kwara State to Force Headquarters, Abuja for further investigation is in accordance with Police investigation procedures.”

The Police said the statement credited to the Senate President can discourage living victims and deceased families of those who must have been killed by the gang from coming forward to give evidence against them.

The Police urged members of the public to disregard and the claim of plot by the IGP against the Senate President as a ruse, unfortunate and an attempt to divert Police investigation into the killings of more than 11 innocent people.

The Force also said it will leave no stone unturned and will do everything within the ambit of the law to ensure justice in the matter, no matter whose ox is gored.

  • Again, Saraki summons IGP, DSS, Army over killings, abductions

Senate President, Bukola Saraki has once again summoned the Inspector General of Police, alongside the Department of State Service and the Army to appear before the Senate to explain the reasons behind recent abductions in the country.

Saraki on his Twitter handle on Wednesday noted that another 87 persons have been abducted off the “nation’s highways.”

He added that the trend cannot be allowed to continue and therefore urged the security outfits to appear before the Senate.

Saraki tweeted from his personal handle @bukolasaraki on Wednesday. “Another 87 people abducted off our nation’s highways. We cannot continue like this! We have once again requested the presence of the IGP, together with the SSS and the Army to explain to us, your representatives, why this continues to happen,” he tweeted.

Recall that the Senate had earlier invited the IGP on three consecutive occasions but he (IGP) did not honour the invitation.

  • BREAKING: IGP planning to frame me, Kwara Gov – Saraki

Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Wednesday at plenary raised alarm over alleged plots by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to frame him and the state governor, Abdulfatai Ahmed in an offence they know nothing about.

This was revealed in a special stamen signed and released by the Senate President on Wednesday.

Recall that the Senate had last week declared the IGP unfit to hold any public office within and outside the country sequel to the IG’s refusal to appear before it on three different occasions that he (IGP) was formally invited on matters bothering on Senator Dino Melaye’s case and the killings across the country.

STATEMENT BY SENATE PRESIDENT INTIMATING SENATORS OF PLOT AGAINST HIM BY IGP

    1. My Distinguished colleagues, there is an issue which I need to bring to your attention very urgently.

    1. Last night, my State Governor, Dr. Abdulfatai Ahmed revealed to me an information at his disposal that a group of suspects who had been in police cells for several weeks for cultism and whose investigation had been concluded with prosecution about to commence under the State law based on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) and the Ministry of Justice were ordered to be transferred to Abuja this morning.

    1. According to the information available to the Governor, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Idris Ibrahim directed the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State to immediately transfer the men to the Force Headquarters. The plan, as the Governor was made to understand is that, under duress, the suspects would be made to alter the statements they already made in Ilorin. They will then be made to implicate the Kwara State Government, and in particular, myself, in their new statement.

    1. This plot is part of the strategy by the IGP Idris to settle scores over the declaration by this honourable Chamber that he is not qualified and competent to hold any public office, within and outside the country and that he is an enemy of Nigerian democracy based on his usual disrespectful conduct towards lawful authorities.

    1. In my own view, this plot is an act of desperation, blackmail, intimidation, abuse of office and crude tactics aimed at turning our country into a Police State where top officials cannot be made to obey the law, follow due process and subject themselves to constituted authorities.

    1. I want to bring this dangerous development to the attention of all of you my colleagues, the entire country and the international community so that you can be aware of the level of impunity in our country and the danger it constitute to our democracy.

    Thank you, all

    Sen. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, CON.

    May 16, 2018.
