  • ‘IGP, impregnated policewoman, married her secretly against police rule’ says Senator Misau

The Senator representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, Hamman Misau, has opened a can worms against the Inspector General of Police, Idris Kpotun Ibrahim.

Raising through order 43, Misau a former Police officer explained that he was attacked by the Inspector General of Police because he revealed corrupt activities under the current IGP, while the Senate was on recess.

He also disclosed that the IG was in extra marital affairs with one Amina and another Esther, but eventually wedded Amina secretly in Kaduna after being impregnated.

“Mr President, distinguished colleagues, instead of the IGP to address the issues I raised in my capacity as the Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he was busy attacking me”, he said.

“The IGP has been in sexual relationship with two female serving Police officers, that is one Amina and Esther. He impregnated Amina and did a wedding secretly in Kaduna.”

“As a former Police officer, I can say authoritatively that it is wrong for an officer to have a relationship with female Police officer because of the nature of that work”, Misau insisted.

Senator Hamman Misau and the IGP have been at each other’s jugular over bribery allegations against the Nigeria Police.

  • Corruption allegations: Senate sets up committee to probe IGP, Ibrahim Idris

The Senate has set up an eight-man ad hoc committee to investigate allegations of corruption brought against the Inspector General of Police(IGP), Ibrahim Idris, by a senator, Isah Misau (APC-Bauchi).

The Senate also mandated its Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to investigate Police allegations against Mr. Misau, and present its findings to the House.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) had alleged that Mr. Misau did not follow due process when he retired from the force.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Senate’s resolution followed a Point of Order by Mr. Misau, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy.

Mr. Misau had told his colleagues that he had been having a running battle with the IGP over the level of corruption in the NPF.

The senator said he deemed it necessary to bring the matter before the Senate because it had been in public domain for “some weeks now”.

He accused the IGP of blackmailing him because he dared to talk about the level of corruption in the force.

“I am a retired Police officer and served for 10 years; my father served the force for 34 years. In fact, he joined the Police before I was born.

“So, when I speak about the Police, I know what I am saying. When I speak about the Police, I speak with authority.

“I am concerned about what is happening in the Police in terms of bribery; there is a need for something urgent to be done to salvage the image of the institution.

“Before raising alarm on the irregularities in the institution, I called three serving officers and they confirmed to me that people pay more than N500,000 to get promoted.

“I also have other evidences that I am ready to release for investigation,’’ he said.

The lawmaker further alleged that the police was generating money from companies where officers were deployed to serve.

He lamented that while most Nigerians were without security protection, the force had deployed a large number of officers to guard companies and a few individuals.

“This is an open secret; it is obvious that even people with questionable character have Police protection and have been blaring sirens all over the place.

“One Police officer is supposed to serve 400 people, but in Nigeria, it is one Police officer to 800 people, while one private marketer has more than 30 policemen.

“A situation like that only depletes the number of Police personnel available to protect the ordinary citizens.

“We have excellent Police officers who are now demoralised because promotion is no longer based on merit and years of service.

“Another thing I found out is that there is illegal diversion of funds. Under the 2016 Budget, there was a line item for purchase of Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), but instead of the APCs, luxury cars were purchased without virement,’’ Mr. Misau said.

On allegations that he left the NPF without due process, Mr. Misau said he followed due process before retiring.

The president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, said that in view of the weighty nature of the allegations brought against the Police, the Senate would not hesitate to investigate the matter.

    Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris

“We have listened to him and he has raised a number of issues which we can’t sweep under the carpet.

“We have to reform our institutions and deal with allegations of corruption so as to cleanse them.

“The ad hoc committee will deal with the area of allegation of corruption, while the Committee on Ethics and Privileges will deal with the allegation of the Police against Misau,’’ he said.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Deputy Chief Whip, Francis Alimikhena, is the chairman of the committee whose other members include Joshua Lidani (PDP-Gombe), Binta Masi (APC-Adamawa) and Duro Faseyi (PDP-Ekiti).

Others include Nelson Effiong (APC-Akwa Ibom), Obinna Ogba (PDP-Ebonyi), Abdul-Aziz Nyako (APC-Adamawa) and Suleiman Hunkuyi (APC-Kaduna).

  • Ease of Doing Business: IGP orders immediate dismantling of roadblocks nationwide

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris has ordered the immediate dismantling of all roadblocks nationwide.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that some of the routes where the order is expected to take effect include; Lagos-Ibadan, Shagamu-Benin, Benin-Onitsha, Okene-Abuja, Kaduna-Kano, Katsina – Kano, Otukpo – Enugu, Enugu – Port Harcourt Express Ways and others.

The police in a statement in Abuja yesterday by the Force Spokesman, CSP Jimoh Moshood explained that the dismantling would enable ease of doing business in Nigeria, adding that it would safeguard, and guarantee free passage of goods and travelers throughout the country.

The IG also said no Police department, section, squad or unit should mount road block without express permission from him.

The statement read: “Consequently, Assistant Inspectors General of Police in charge of Zonal Commands, Commissioners of Police in charge of State Commands, Heads of Departments, must ensure that every patrol vehicle in their respective Formation carries a conspicuous and legible inscription of Patrol vehicle identification number, and dedicated emergency Phone numbers for ease of identification and report of distress by members of the public.

The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Border patrol of the Force is specifically directed to ensure compliance with this directive along the Border routes in the country except the few approved points by the Federal Government.

Furthermore, Police personnel who involve in vehicular Patrol on highways and major roads across the country must wear on their uniforms a bold name tag and service number”

The Statement also said the Special X-Squad teams of the Force have been deployed throughout the country and they are under strict instructions to arrest, investigate and discipline any Police personnel flouting the order.

The IGP has also directed the Special X-Squads to embark on removal of other forms of illegal blockage and obstructions on Highways and Roads, created by unlawful Revenue/Tax collectors, Road Transport Unions, Labour and Trade related unions inhibiting vehicular movement and smooth passage of passengers and goods, and other road users across the country.

For avoidance of doubt, the Taxes and Levies act, Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004 section 2 (2) disallowed any person, including a Tax Authority from mounting a Road block in any part of the Federation for the purposes of collecting any Tax or Levy”.

  • Army/IPOB clash: IGP orders deployment of 500 mobile police officers to Aba

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris on Friday approved the deployment of over 500 mobile police officers to Aba to restore peace in the troubled city.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Operations, Taiwo Lakanu, disclosed this on Friday during a duty tour to Aba, at the Aba Police Area Command.

He said that Mr. Idris directed that peace should be restored to Abia, hence the deployment of the mobile police officers who had assumed duty in Aba.

You can see that we have emplaced security and that the whole place is quite and our men are on patrol,” he said.

For now we are still monitoring. So, for now there is no problem. We are on top of the situation. We are working in tandem with other agencies and they are cooperating with us.”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that peace is gradually returning to the commercial city which was embroiled in a clash between soldiers and IPOB members in Aba.

Some roadside shops along Aba-Owerri road, St Michael’s road and other streets, and those at Ariaria International Market and New Market opened on Friday.

  • PRNigeria publisher petitions IGP over alleged harassment, intimidation of family

The publisher of PRNigeria, a press release platform for critical institutions, Yushau Shuaib, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris, over alleged harassment and intimidation of his family members living in Abuja, especially the Gestapo style his family members were allegedly subjected to by a team of police officers from Lagos.

In a 30-paragraph letter addressed to the IGP dated September 11, the petitioner noted that the team from Lagos had claimed that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State was aware of an alleged massive fraud committed in Lagos involving his son, Gidado Shuaib.

The police team, led by one Inspector Babatunde, who claimed to have arrived from the office of the Lagos State Governor, had initially informed the wife of the petitioner by telephone that they were from an MTN team to deliver a seasonal gift to her, which raised suspicions from the wife before her eventual alarm, suspecting them to be a kidnap gang before nearby residents came to her rescue.

The petitioner also resisted the attempt to be taken to Lagos for questioning by the team stressing that he was not the suspect, a move also supported by the Divisional Police Officer of Wuye Police station, Solome Hardy, who reportedly told them she would never allow them to take him to Lagos because he was not the suspect of their investigation.

The petitioner, Yushau Shuaib, in the petition to the IGP is demanding the “reason and justification for the harassment of himself and especially his wife who has been traumatised since then and undergoing medication and counselling.”

Mr. Shuaib wrote: “The ridiculous treatment of myself and my wife with the detention in Wuye Police Station before our eventual release is not only appalling and scandalous but a calculated attempt to rubbish our hard-earned reputation, having used the last five years protecting and promoting the activities of security agencies in Nigeria.

In fact, through PRNigeria Platform alone, we have syndicated and published over 300 official Press Releases from the Police in the last two years of the current administration as part of our social responsibility to our fatherland.

While we have been threatened by terrorists and their sympathisers in the cause of our services, it is rather unfortunate that the police are now our tormentors.

My fear, currently is not about me, my family or my son who will surely confront the police with his lawyers over the reckless allegation on his return. My fear is: what may be happening to other ordinary Nigerians who do not have people in police or security agencies to put words on their behalf?

Only God knows how many lives could have been lost with the kind of recklessness exhibited by the Lagos Police Team that engages in the gestapo-like operation of picking up people without providing the information on their alleged offences.”

The petitioner, therefore, urged the police boss to “provide clear information of the alleged offences purportedly committed by his son; to direct one Inspector Babatunde to stop threatening them with phone calls insisting they must be in Lagos in the absence of their son. He also urged the police to tender unreserved apology for treating his family like a common criminal without adequate proof of the allegations.”

Mr. Shuaib further said his ordeal contravenes a clear provision of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 which prohibits the arrest of another person in place of a suspect. He also pointed out that with the “questionable manner” of the Lagos police team, the police boss should transfer the case to “any of your Special Investigation Units in the Force Headquarters or to the FCT Police Command.”

Mr. Shuaib said that with his strict monitoring and parental guidance over his children, he should also be held liable if his son is found guilty of the alleged offence.

I am not only a guardian but a father in every sense of the word,” he concluded.

  • We are worried over FG’s silence on N120bn bribery allegations against IGP – PDP

Peoples Democratic Party said in Abuja on yesterday that allegations of bribery against the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, should not be ignored by the Federal Government.

The main opposition party was referring to a series of allegations leveled against the IGP by the Senator representing Bauchi Central, Isah Misau.

The Senator, a former police officer, had accused the police boss of collecting bribes from some officers before they were promoted.

He alleged that Idris was also collecting bribes from oil companies before posting police officers to them to provide security.

Responding, the IGP declared the senator a deserter, saying Misau forged his retirement letter from the Force.

But the PDP, in a series of tweets, described the refusal of the Federal Government to speak on the allegations as worrisome.

It said it was worried over the “deafening silence” of the Federal Government on the issue.

The main opposition party alleged that the All Progressives Congress government also refused to act on the allegations levelled against the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu.

But the APC, on Sunday, said unlike the PDP, which it alleged allowed corruption to thrive during its 16 year reign, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration did not encourage corruption.

The PDP said the allegations against the IGP “are too weighty”, asking the police to free itself from the accusation.

The tweeted added, “We are again worried about the deafening silence of the APC-led FG on the allegation of corruption against the police IG by Senator Misau.

“The N120bn fraud allegation against the IG of police is too weighty and the police authority must purge itself of this accusation.

“The sudden realisation that Senator Misau is a deserter further exposes the complicity of the police force on this matter.

“This allegation must not be swept under the carpet by the APC like the ones against the EFCC acting chairman, Magu, and others

“The APC-led FG cannot be said to be fighting corruption and at the same time covering up corrupt officers.”

of the APC, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said this in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja on Monday.

He stated that it took the determination of the present administration to expose the monumental pillage of the nation’s commonwealth by officials of the last administration.

Abdullahi added, “It is glaring for all to see that the APC has been walking the talk in the war against corruption.

“We did not wait to be prodded before our dear President; Muhammadu Buhari, ordered the suspension of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawan, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ayo Oke, to allow for proper investigations.

“This is unlike the PDP which swept glaring cases of corruption under its big umbrella. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Nigerians know and appreciate how committed this administration is to breaking the cycle of corruption which has held this country down for decades.”

  • Ex-Ogun gov, Gbenga Daniel petitions IGP, says ‘Help, Kashamu wants to kill me’

The immediate past governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel on Friday accused the Senator representing Ogun East, Chief Buruji Kashamu, of sending hired killers after him.

Daniel, in a petition to the Police claimed that “five hefty men, two of them in military fatigue” on Thursday invaded his Abuja residence with a mission to terminating his life.

He said they were acting on behalf of Kashamu, who, according to the former governor, has “on several other occasions boasted in the company of his friends that he will not rest until he sees my end.”

He added: “This renewed offensive was as a result of the recent Supreme Court ruling placing his own faction at a disadvantage and ending the reign of his control over the State Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, which were all secured through various controversial court orders.

He asked the police for additional security protection and to put Kashamu “under security watch list and strict surveillance.”

The Senator, reacting to the accusation last night said it was a hoax.
“It is certain that OGD is hallucinating,” Kashamu’s Media Adviser, Austin Oniyokor said in a statement.

He is the accuser, the investigator, prosecutor and judge in his own case.

Pray, why would Senator Kashamu go after a man who is at the twilight of his political career?
“By the grace of God, the distinguished Senator Buruji Kashamu is PDP’s highest political office holder in Ogun State despite the OGD’s efforts to make him lose the election. So, why would he want to attack a former governor who has lost political relevance six years after leaving office? Is OGD the only former governor in Ogun State?”
Daniel and Kashamu belong to rival factions of the PDP in Ogun State.
Their disagreement dates to Daniel’s tenure as governor of the state.

  • Give us one year to eliminate kidnapping, militancy, other crimes – IGP tells Nigerians

The Inspector General of Police Mr. Ibrahim Idris on Friday said the police under his leadership will work tirelessly to eliminate kidnapping, militancy and other perpetrators of heinous crimes in the country under one year.

Idris spoke during a courtesy call on the The Nation Newspapers in Lagos.

The police IG noted that police officers have been strengthened and their morale boosted to combat crimes.

He spoke of plan to send 100 marine policemen to the Navy for special training on counter kidnapping and militancy.

‘‘We have strengthened our officers and boosted their morale in combating crimes,” he said.

The IGP hailed Nigerians for assisting the police in combatting crimes, citing the recent arrest of suspected kidnap kingpin,Evans Onwanmadike.

His words: “Evans terrorized people in this country for many years but now we have the notorious kidnapper in our custody.

The police deserve some credit from the public. Give me up to a year, I assure you that Nigerians would see a different police working to ensure their safety in every nook and cranny of this country.

‘‘When this kidnapping crime was unbearable on Kaduna-Abuja highway, I went to the National Assembly and I told the lawmakers to give me a week. Within five days, our men arrested 58 suspects, who confessed to the crimes.

More of the suspects were arrested and paraded on Thursday, bringing the total to 77. All we want from the public is support. The police require support and encouragement, because we are human beings too.’’

The police chief stressed the need for the country to begin to focus on the causes of crime.

He said: “We cannot blame the police for the causes of crime. As I speak to you now, I can confirm that we have over a thousand suspects in detention for kidnapping and ritual killings. Then, we should ask why we still have these crimes when we have dozens of suspects? I think we should focus on the causes of crimes and its symptoms, not the agents of reaction.

We have plans to develop the marine police. We are going to dominate the riverine areas.

When I became the IGP, the first state I visited was Delta State, precisely Tompolo’s hometown. I discovered that our presence on the creeks was minimal. I believe we can succeed in dominating the creeks if we have certain things put in place.

We need to train more marine police officers with modern techniques and gadgets. We need to buy more patrol gunboats and we are making progress in this respect. Already, we got offer to train about 100 policemen in marine security and a promise of 10 gunboats.

By the time we get this done, we are going to start deployment from Lagos because of the rate of crime in riverine communities.

We have been making efforts to secure these riverine communities from militants. This progress is achieved due to the activities of the marine police. We are training the marine police to perform better. We are liaising with the Navy in the training of our marine officers. We are going to train more officers in continuous succession.”

Asked why neither Biafra agitator, Nnamdi Kanu nor the President, Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) Shettima Yerima was arrested for inflammatory comments, Idris said the National Security Council (NSC) weighed the aggregation of interests after weighing the benefits and disadvantages of certain action.

He said: “We have the National Security Council in place chaired by the Acting President. We have been meeting and analyzing each of these threat messages from separatist groups. We have to analyse the pros and cons. As you are aware, the police are on top of the situation.

As an organisation, what we take as paramount is the maintenance of law and order. There was a time we ordered the arrest of the leaders of groups making threat messages. Then, leaders of various ethnic nationalities came to the villa for a meeting with the Acting President.

The agreements reached at the meeting made the police to relax on the arrest order. We believe there are certain situations needed to be managed very carefully, so that you don’t bring up tension. We believe the security and safety of Nigerians is paramount. We are assuring Nigerians that there is no person or group of persons that can deny them their rights to free movement in any part of the country.”

  • Kidnapping won’t stop unless we enforce capital punishment on culprits – IGP

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on Wednesday said to end kidnapping which is fast becoming the easiest road to acquiring illicit wealth in the country, the National Assembly must enact stringent laws which includes capital punishment.

The IG said this during the monthly meeting with Commissioners of Police and other senior officers of the Force in Abuja.

In his words: “When I went to the National Assembly, I told them that what we need to challenge kidnapping is punishment. I think these boys see us parade people but they don’t see them taken to court or sentenced to death.

In some states where kidnapping leads to death of somebody, the penalty is death but they only see the court sentencing such persons to 10 years or life imprisonment.

I feel that is why they feel more relaxed and I told the National Assembly that we need to have more stringent punishment for kidnappers. I think that is the only way to check the menace because they see it as child’s play.

If you go all over the Command across the states, you would discover that some of these youths are getting more involved in kidnapping. Like I told the National Assembly, I believe if we can get laws to check it, we are going to see several changes.

In Niger Republic, a Boko Haram suspect was arrested and within one week, judgement was passed. That sent a very strong message that whoever that is planning to go into it should desist but here, we have suspects year in, year out, appearing in in court and matter continually adjourned.

It does not serve as deterrent to them and even most of them kept in police cells are more comfortable there. So, I think to address the level of kidnapping in the country, a law should be passed.”

  • Behave yourselves, I have zero tolerance for corruption – IGP warns officers

The Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, on Wednesday warned officers of the force to shun corruption and abuse of citizens’ rights or face sanctions.

Idris gave the advice at the opening of the training of police officers on the effective implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) in Abuja.

The training was organised by the Nigeria Police Force in conjunction with the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies.

“Let me use this opportunity to advise you to shun corruption and the abuse of the rights of citizens while performing your duties.

“This administration has zero tolerance for corruption and abuse of human rights, “he said.

He said that any officer caught engaging in corrupt practices and other unwholesome acts would be punished in accordance with the law.

“I assure you that your welfare as police officers is paramount and I must do everything possible to meet up with it, “he said.

He enjoined the participants to make good use of the training to improve their day-to-day operations in their stations and formations.

The inspector-general said that the training was aimed at inculcating in police officers across board, the need to police in accordance with the Act.

“This will eliminate all forms of illegal conducts that are not in conformity with our creed, “he said.

He noted that unlawful arrest, prolonged detentions without order of court among others, had given rise to judgments against the police.

Idris restated that the police under his administration would operate within the rule of law and respect for rights of Nigerians.

The President, Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, Prof. Yemi Akinseye-George, called on the Federal Government to adequately fund the police for optimum performance.

He also said that there was need to recruit more personnel to enhance the operations of the police in all nooks and crannies of the country.

Akinseye-George urged the National Assembly to give the Police Trust Fund bill before it, speedy consideration.

He said that the centre was ready to collaborate with the police toward the development of a modern Police Act.

The president said that if given the required resources, the police would check corruption and insecurity in the country.

He noted that the police was central to the effective implementation of the ACJA.

The President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, who was represented by Justice Emmanuel Agim, said the training sought to improve the capacity of police officers.

She said that to effectively enforce the law, police officers must have the moral will.

Bulkachuwa said that enough money must be spent on training and investigation for good end-result, adding that investigations in the country were associated with more problems.

She advised that thorough investigation should be carried out before arresting a suspect.

“Lack of fund for investigation will force a police officer to sit in his office, “Bulkachuwa said.
