Why I suspended special promotion of certain officers-IGP

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun, has explained why he suspended special promotion of certain officers within the police force.

The police boss made this known while decorating newly promoted top officers of the Police Force held in Abuja on Friday.

The IGP expressed his frustration with the excessive lobbying for special promotions and stated that any recommendations for such promotions would now be met with disciplinary action.

Egbetokun noted that the police management will handle any cases where special promotions are deemed necessary.

He condemned some officers who lobby for special promotions, noting that henceforth, anyone recommended by politicians and influential personalities in society would be disciplined.

Egbetokun also said when the need arises for any officer to be promoted specially, the issue will be handled by the police management.

He also banned undue soliciting for posting, warning that anyone found guilty of this act would be dealt with in accordance with the law of the Force.

Following the warning, the police boss decorated 15 senior police officers, who were recently promoted from their initial ranks to a new rank.

  • IGP Egbetokun, knocked over position on state police

IGP Egbetokun, knocked over position on state police

A group known as  Igbo Renaissance Forum, (IRF) has expressed deep disappointment concerning the recent opposition against the establishment of state police by Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police.

According to the group, the IGP’s  position on state policing only shows deep-seated reluctance to embrace necessary change in Nigeria’s policing architecture.

This was contained in a statement signed by IRF’s international coordinator, Nze Ugo-Akpe Onwuka, and made available to newsmen on Tuesday.

The statement reads: “While his concerns might be valid, they do not outweigh the urgent need for a restructuring of Nigeria’s policing system. The argument that Nigeria is not ripe for state police overlooks the fact that the current centralised system has failed to adequately address the country’s diverse security challenges.

“Localised policing would not only be more effective in combating crime but also foster a sense of ownership and accountability within communities.

“Nigeria’s security landscape is multifaceted, with different regions grappling with unique threats. A centralised police force struggles to effectively and efficiently combat these varied challenges.

“State police, on the other hand, can tailor their approach to address local security needs more efficiently. Concerns about abuse of power by state governors are also valid, but they can be addressed through robust checks and balances, independent oversight bodies, and a commitment to upholding human rights.”

The forum further states: “Financial considerations are significant but shouldn’t overshadow nor outweigh the potential benefits of state police. Collaborative funding models involving federal, state, and local governments, as well as public-private partnerships, could alleviate financial strains while ensuring effective policing.

“Incorporating the security votes of governors as a source of funding for state police could also address this concern. In essence, while challenges exist, they are not insurmountable. With careful planning, accountability mechanisms, and a commitment to professionalism, the establishment of state police in Nigeria could be a progressive step towards enhancing security and fostering community trust in law enforcement.”

IRF implored all stakeholders to note that it is time to have a frank and open discussion about state police and explore how it can be implemented in a way that addresses concerns while maximising its benefits for all Nigerians.

The IGP, who described the trend as worrying, also said the police recorded 141 cases of terrorism/secessionist attacks; 26 cases of armed robbery; 214 cases of kidnapping, and 39 cases of unlawful possession of firearms.

Egbetokun, who spoke at a strategic meeting with Zonal AIGs and State’s Command Police Commissioners at Force headquarters, equally disclosed that nine suspects who were directly involved in the killing of 6 police officers in the forest at Ohoror in Ughelli LGA of Delta State have been apprehended and were currently assisting in unravelling the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.

He said: “Also, during the period under review, the Nigeria Police Force arrested 3,685 suspects for their participation in various crimes, while the police rescued 401 kidnapped victims. The police recovered 216 firearms; 3,601 ammunition and 82 vehicles.”

Regarding the killing of policemen in Ughelli, he said: “Undoubtedly, we are closing in on the key actors and other parties to the crime.

“Be assured that we will not rest on our oars until the murder of our colleagues are avenged with justice.”

The IGP emphasized that policing in Nigeria was an endeavour fraught with complexities and obstacles, ranging from insurgent activities and armed banditry to varying other criminal syndicates and communal clashes.

“In the process, some of our gallant officers and men have paid the supreme price whilst several others are still grappling with various degrees of injuries sustained in the unending battles with men of the underworld.

“The abduction and killing of six of our personnel during a Special Operation at Evil Forest, Ughelli North LGA of Delta State, on 26th February, 2024 is a sore testament to the hazards confronting us every day as we strive to keep our country safe.

”The entire Police family is deeply pained by the heinous act of violence against our officers in the ordinary course of their duties. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen officers during this difficult time.

I like to firmly reiterate that we will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the killers of these personnel, and many others, do not escape the long arms of the law.

“It is gratifying to note that in the face of these formidable challenges, the Nigeria Police Force has shown unwavering commitment and dedication to its mandate across the Federation.

“We pray that God Almighty will grant eternal repose to the souls of our departed colleagues and comfort their families and friends.

“In the same vein, we pray for the quick recovery of all the injured officers and men. May I seize this opportunity to reiterate that we are committed to giving them all the necessary support they require in their convalescence journey.

“In this respect, I am pleased to note that we have made significant progress in the investigation into the tragic incident.

“In the meantime, we will continue to meet our obligations to their families in order to minimize their pains and sufferings during this period.

“On the flip-side, we will continue to strive for excellence by being more proactive in our policing approach.

“Our responses to the current internal security threats require strategic deployments that are not only proactive but also technology and intelligence-driven.

“Through meticulous analysis of available information, we shall endeavour to pre-empt criminal activities, disrupt their illicit networks, and apprehend perpetrators swiftly.”

Gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey petitions IGP over paternity allegations

Gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey has petitioned the Inspector General of Police  (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, over allegations that he fathered his colleague, Mercy Chinwo’s son.

The singer, in a petition filed by his lawyers, Peter Abraham, Uche Matthew, Gbenga Agunloye, and Anthony Abia, asked the IGP to investigate and prosecute four social media users who accused him of paternal fraud.

Recently, four social media users Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and DJ Spoiltkid alleged that Bassey fathered the son of the popular gospel singer, an allegation that went viral social media.

They made the allegations on their social media accounts when Mercy and her husband, Blessed Uzochikwa posted pictures of their son and themselves on different social media platforms on March, 29.

Mr Ejike’s post read: “This Mercy Chinwo’s child she was hiding after giving birth, but the truth is that this baby looks exactly like singer Nathaniel Bassey.

“Nothing anybody wants to reason with me oh. This child is Nathaniel Bassey’s Baby. Maybe a secret away match occurred; otherwise, how can we make empirical sense of this.”

Mr Terrence Ekot on the platform “X” reads: “Take a look at the stunning resemblance of Mercy Chinwo’s son and Nathaniel Bassey.

“Though the duo has been working together on several projects, what do you have to say?”

The posts had gone viral on social media, with many calling out  Bassey on why he should he should be involved in such an appalling act .

According to the petition submitted to the IGP on 1 April, the consequences of making such statements on social media had been known to tarnish the reputations of individuals, render marriages unstable.

The lawyers said the social media posts by the four individuals amounted to complete assassination of Bassey’s character.

They therefore, urged the police authorities to urgently treat the petition against the four social media users.

The petition reads in part : “Our client is a gospel music minister whose songs and ministrations have impacted the lives of so many from different walks of life across the globe.

“On Friday, the 29th day of March 2024, Mercy Chinwo Blessed another popular gospel music minister, and her husband posted pictures of their son and themselves on different social media platforms.

“However, our client was disheartened, saddened, and grossly disturbed to find that the above-mentioned suspects, as mischief makers with a criminal intent to destroy the image and character of our client..

“They had made different social media posts of defamatory matter, calling our client ‘the father of minister Mercy Chinwo Blessed’s son,’ a woman who is married to another man.

“In a post on the platform “X” formerly known as Twitter, “Dj SpoiltKid” a verified X user, quoted the statement by Okoronkwo Ejike along with a screenshot of the post and added, “When are we doing DNA test?”

“These nefarious acts of these suspects, if not immediately dealt with, will continue to destroy our client’s image, injure his reputation, assassinate his character and cast aspersion on the good name built by our client over the years.”

The lawyers said the alleged actions of the four individuals contravened sections 373 and 375 of the Criminal Code Act as well as Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.).

“Consequently, we urge you to use your good offices to, in the interest of justice, investigate this matter, arrest, and bring the suspect to justice, which will serve as a deterrent to others.”

Why IGP banned use of POS machines in police stations

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has said the ban on the use of Point-of-Sales (POS) machines in police stations became imperative following public outcry on alleged illegal and illicit transactions with certain police operatives.

The police boss ordered stoppage POS machines and other electronic mobile money transaction devices within police stations and other police facilities nationwide, on Monday.

Giving further reasons for the ban, the IGP who spoke through the force spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the ban was aimed at preserving the integrity and security of police operation.

He stressed that the directive was also to forestall perceived corrupt practices, adding that it was to clear the Commands or Formations of possible criminal intrusion under such guise, and maintaining discipline within the Force.

The top cop said any command or formation caught flouting the order would be severely dealt with while police officers and POS operators involved would face dire consequences.

  • NBA-SPIDEL writes IGP, demands stoppage of CMRIS immediately

NBA-SPIDEL writes IGP, demands stoppage of CMRIS immediately

The NBA-SPIDEL has written the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun to immediately stop his men from collecting N6,000.00 from motorists over Central Motor Registry Information System, CMRIS as it’s unknown to law in Nigeria.

In the letter, NBA-SPIDEL noted that: “The attention of the Nigeria Bar Association Section on Public Interest (NBA-SPIDEL) has been recently drawn to reports all around the country that vehicle owners are mandated to register and obtain a Central Motor Information System (CMRIS) Certificate from the Nigeria Police Force for a cost of not less than #6,000.00 (Six thousand naira).

“NBA-SPIDEL also has it on good authority that the men of the Nigeria Police have since started enforcing compliance wherein purported defaulters have been made to part with their hard-earned monies in thousands of Naira.

“In the light of these developments, the NBA-SPIDEL questions the legal propriety which enables the Nigeria Police Force to issue Central Motor Information System (CMRIS) Certificates to vehicle owners, particularly when it is not clearly stated in any laws (at least to our knowledge) that the Nigeria Police has any authority to issue car licenses or certificates of any nature to to vehicle owners after due registration of vehicles in the appropriate office.

“NBA-SPIDEL states further that any such certificate being issued by the Nigeria Police Force without any legal backing is outright illegal, null, and void and therefore of no consequence. NBA-SPIDEL therefore uses this opportunity to reiterate the fact that the duty of the Nigeria Police in protecting the citizens and enforcing the law does not extend to collecting monies and/or issuing certificates to vehicle owners. Regrettably, the men of the Nigeria Police Force have since taken advantage of the ignorance of unsuspecting Nigerians by extorting large sums of money from them for failure to present the CMRIS certificate on demand during road search.

“This illegality has to stop immediately.
Consequently, the NBA-SPIDEL states that these acts of illegality must not continue unabated and therefore unequivocally demand that the Nigeria Police immediately stop the issuance and/or demand for the Central Motor Information System (CMRIS) Certificate.

    Dear Sir,

IN RE: ISSUANCE OF CENTRAL MOTOR REGISTRY INFORMATION SYSTEM (CMRIS) CERTIFICATE BY THE NIGERIA POLICE FORCE: A DEMAND FOR THE IMMEDIATE STOPPAGE OF SAME.

The attention of the Nigeria Bar Association Section on Public Interest (NBA-SPIDEL) has been recently drawn to reports all around the country that vehicle owners are mandated to register and obtain a Central Motor Information System (CMRIS) Certificate from the Nigeria Police Force for a cost of not less than #6,000.00 (Six thousand naira).

NBA-SPIDEL also has it on good authority that the men of the Nigeria Police have since started enforcing compliance wherein purported defaulters have been made to part with their hard-earned monies in thousands of Naira.
In the light of these developments, the NBA-SPIDEL questions the legal propriety which enables the Nigeria Police Force to issue Central Motor Information System (CMRIS) Certificates to vehicle owners, particularly when it is not clearly stated in any laws (at least to our knowledge) that the Nigeria Police has any authority to issue car licenses or certificates of any nature to to vehicle owners after due registration of vehicles in the appropriate office.

NBA-SPIDEL states further that any such certificate being issued by the Nigeria Police Force without any legal backing is outright illegal, null, and void and therefore of no consequence.

This illegality has to stop immediately.
Consequently, the NBA-SPIDEL states that these acts of illegality must not continue unabated and therefore unequivocally demand that the Nigeria Police immediately stop the issuance and/or demand for the Central Motor Information System (CMRIS) Certificate.

NBA-SPIDEL, therefore, humbly but strongly demands that you issue a directive immediately stopping the issuance of/demand for the CMRIS certificates nationwide.

NBA-SPIDEL further demands that the registration website and every other physical registration centres be shut down, and every money already collected from Nigerians be refunded to them within 3 days of the receipt of this notice. Please note that failure, neglect or refusal to comply with this lawful demand within 7 days of the receipt of this letter will compel NBA-SPIDEL to seek appropriate sanctions in court against your esteemed office and the Nigeria Police Force.

Please be assured of our utmost respect at all times.

Arrest of alleged Gistlover staff: Popular broadcaster asks IGP to release his brother

…demands explanation on why they were paraded

Popular broadcaster and producer, Executive Director of Hallowmace Foundation, Anderson Osiebe has asked the Inspector of General Police to release his brother one of the arrested alleged staff of Gistlover.

In a letter made available to journalists on Sunday and signed by Anderson Osiebe entitled: ‘PARADE OF ALLEGED GISTLOVER SYNDICATE TRIO BY THE NIGERIA POLICE: TRUTH OF THE MATTER’, he declared that his brother has no link with Gistlover.

Osiebe explained how the police on different occasions deceived him after perfecting his brother Isaac Akpokighe’s bail papers.

    Hear him:

“My name is Sunny Anderson Osiebe, a Nigerian and cousin to one of the accused, Isaac Akpokighe.

“To the best of my knowledge, Isaac is not a member of the Gistlover syndicate as accused by the Nigeria Police.

“Isaac and 2 others were brought into Abuja on the 3rd of December, 2023, by the Cybercrime department of the Nigeria Police.

“I intervened in the matter, and after over 2 weeks of police investigation, they discovered that he was not actually a suspect in the matter.

“This made the police to grant him bail under certain conditions.

“I swung into action and got the level 15 officer as requested by the Police for his bail.

“On the 24th of December, just at the point of perfecting the bail conditions, the Investigation Police Officer (IPO) incharge of the case, told me that he just received an order from above to change it to a level 16 officer.

“This made my cousin to spend the Xmas break in detention.

“Consequently, on the 27th of December, I got a level 16 officer to stand as a surety.

“His documents were accepted while the letter of introduction from his place of work was rejected.

“This again made him to spend the new year in detention.

“On the 3rd of January, 2024, the surety brought another letter of introduction which the Police Cybercrime department accepted. This meant that all the bail conditions have been fully satisfied.

“At that point, they didn’t know what excuse to give me or anybody else.

“After about few hours of waiting, the IPO came out to tell me to go and come back on Friday, the 5th, to enable the DIG investigation give final release approval.

“Only for the Police to parade them that same Friday I was asked to come back to get my cousin, Isaac Akpokighe.

“The police said in its press release that they would be charged to court after investigation.

“Does this mean that the police didn’t do due diligence before parading them???

“How do you parade people you are still investigating???

“Which reasonable and responsible organisation does that???

“It amounts to defamation and intimidation.

“This is happening at a time President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has constantly assured Nigerians of a renewed hope in all ramifications.

“It’s most unfortunate and disheartening that one has to go through hell to secure bail for an innocent Nigerian.

“Gistlover has openly demanded that the Police should show the world the link the trio have with its operations.

“From the communication and interaction I had with the police before the parade, I demand the immediate and unconditional release of my brother as he has no link whatsoever with Gistlover.

Insecurity: Nigerians are heavily under policed, IG Egbetokun tells lawmakers

    …says it’s 1000 Nigerians to a policeman

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun during an interactive session with House of Representatives has revealed that Nigerians are heavily under policed.

The IGP who made this disclosure before members of the House in its sectoral intervention said: “In Nigeria it’s one policeman to 1000 Nigerians and this is a clear indication that we are heavily under policed.

He explained that the force does not have enough men and women to meet the challenging security needs of most Nigerians.

Egbetokun outlined some challenges within the force, including poor logistics provision, insufficient patrol vehicles for police divisions, inadequate training, and poor welfare of personnel.

TNG recalls that insecurity has remained unabated particularly in the northern part of Nigeria as just last week a monarch in Abuja was kidnapped from his palace.
