Reps furious with Service Chiefs, IGP for ignoring their scheduled session

The House of Representatives is angry over the absence of the service chiefs and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, at an interactive session scheduled to hold on Thursday during plenary.

The security chiefs failed to show up but sent their representatives.

Recall the House had last week scheduled a sectoral debate with the security chiefs as it plans to do with other sectors of the country.

Following a constitutional point of order by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, the House rejected the representation of the security heads and instead postponed the session.

The engagement has been rescheduled to Tuesday next week as the House insisted that the service chiefs must appear at the debate.

The service chiefs are the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa; Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-General Taoreed Lagbaja; Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, and Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.

Court hammers IGP, PSC, others with N200m fine over unlawful arrest of housewife

Justice Ntong Ntong, the presiding judge at the Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo, has ordered the Inspector General of Police, the Police Service Commission, and three others to pay Peace Ekom Robert, a housewife in Uyo, the sum of N200 million as damages for her unlawful arrest and detention.

This judgment was delivered on Tuesday in a case where Mrs. Ekom sought the enforcement of her fundamental human rights.

According to the details of the case, Mrs. Ekom was approached by Ifenyinwa Anthonia Olua in March this year.

Olua asked Mrs. Ekom to help her connect with someone in Europe who could purchase euros and pay her in Naira.

An amount of £55,000 (equivalent to N42.9m) was transferred to a Spanish account.

The sudden and successive transfers raised suspicion, and the Spanish authorities restricted the account, suspecting it could contain illicit funds.

As a result, the Police arrested the applicant.

The Inspector General of Police, Commissioner of Police, Administration, Force Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja, Mr. Babazango Ibrahim, DSP Yusuf Dauda of Anti-Homicide Section in Alagbon, Lagos, Inspector Celestina Ugbaja of Special Fraud Unit in Ikoyi, Lagos, and the Police Service Commission were all named as respondents in the lawsuit.

In a one-hour judgment, the presiding judge, Justice Ntong Ntong said he had “read in between lines the record file and has not seen where the Inspector General of Police and other respondents filed any process to challenge the averments of the applicant.”

Justice Ntong said the evidence before the Court showed that “the Police threw caution to the wind and became law unto themselves thereby bastardizing the 1999 constitution, disrespecting the order of the Court and treating the name of God and office of the President and Commander in chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with disdain.”

The Court also ordered the Inspector General of Police and five other “respondents to return the N15m collected from the applicant to the Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court, Abuja pending the hearing and final determination of the criminal charge against the applicant before the Federal High Court.”

The trial judge held that the Police were not “a debt recovery agency and has no power to have extorted N15m from the applicant in a matter they have not concluded investigation nor the applicant tried and found guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.”

The applicant’s counsel, Uwemedimo Nwoko, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, referred to the Court as the last hope for the common man.

The respondent’s counsel, Barr. Akebong Essien, argued that his client had done nothing wrong by reporting the matter to the Police.

Despite the judgment, the Police had still not properly arraigned the applicant, who had been in their custody since March of that year.

IGP orders investigation into attack on NLC President, Ajaero

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an investigation into circumstances surrounding the alleged assault on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr Joe Ajaero.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated this at a press conference on Friday in Owerri, ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in Imo.

“Consequently, he has directed the Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, to take over the matter with the primary objective of ascertaining the true facts surrounding the incident.

“The DIG is to address any ambiguities that may exist as the Police have been inundated with different versions of the incident making investigation imperative to clear the conflicting accounts.

“The Nigeria Police Force understands the importance of transparency and accountability in maintaining public trust,” he stated.

Adejobi reiterated IGP’s assurances to the public, most especially the leadership of organised labour, that a thorough and unbiased inquiry will be conducted to provide clarifications.

He urged organised labour and the public to remain calm, as the IGP has personally intervened to address the issues surrounding the incident.

“Investigation has commenced, and the Nigeria Police Force guarantees that it will be followed to a conclusive end, and appropriate actions will be taken based on the findings of the investigation,” he said.

It would be recalled that on Nov. 1, Ajaero was reportedly arrested by police operatives in Owerri and later beaten up by suspected thugs after being taken to an unknown destination.

The NLC president had barely led workers to protest over unpaid salaries in the state on the fateful day when the incident occurred.

  • Falana urges IGP to arrest, prosecute police officers who brutalised NLC President

Falana urges IGP to arrest, prosecute police officers who brutalised NLC President

Senior lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana, has called on the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest and prosecute  police officers who allegedly brutalised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero in Owerri on Wednesday.

Falana made his remark while reacting to the statement released by the police on Ajaero’s arrest.

Recall that the police had denied arresting the NLC president during the union’s rally in Owerri, Imo State on Wednesday.

It explained that Ajaero was only whisked away when miscreants hijacked the NLC Trade Union rally in Owerri.

However, Falana said the explanation given by the police was tainted with loopholes.

In a statement he signed, Falana wondered why the police failed to arrest the miscreants that brutalised the NLC President in their presence.

He said: “The police version of the brutalisation of the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajero is full of loopholes.

“Why did the police allow Comrade Ajero to be brutalised by the so-called miscreants? In other words, why did the police not protect him from the violent attack?

“So the police who witnessed the attack without making any arrest suddenly turned round to take the victim to the police clinic. The members of the public who decried the barbaric attack took pictures, which exposed the misleading version of the police.

“It is disturbing that the police justified the action of the so-called miscreants by saying that Comrade Ajero has disobeyed the order of a court. Why did the police not allow the court to purge Comrade Ajero of contempt of court?

“We call on the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to investigate and ensure that the police officers who brutalised the NLC President are prosecuted without any delay.”

According to the Force Headquarters, the police will engage with relevant stakeholders, including legal experts, civil society organisations, and experts in the field, to ensure a holistic and well-informed review.

This development was made known by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, via official correspondence on Monday.

Adejobi said, “Similarly, in furtherance of his zeal to tackle all forms of insecurity in the country, the IG has issued a stern warning to all individuals involved in the wrongful possession of arms and light weapons, reiterating that illegal proliferation of firearms and light weapons poses a significant threat to the peace and stability of our nation.

“In light of this, the Nigeria Police Force is resolutely determined to combat the illegal fabrication, sales, possession and use of arms emphasising that possessing firearms without the appropriate licenses and permits is not only a violation of the law but also a grave danger to society. He assured that the Nigeria Police Force will spare no effort in pursuing and prosecuting those engaged in these illegal activities to the full extent of the law.

“The Inspector General of Police has charged all state Commissioners of Police and supervising Assistant Inspectors-General of Police in charge of Zonal Commands, and tactical squads to commence a total clampdown on the illegal fabrication, sale, possession, and use of prohibited firearms in the country.

IGP Egbetokun laments gruesome murder of Rivers DPO

Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun the Inspector-General of Police, (IGP)  has condemned in totality the gruesome murder of the Divisional Police Officer, (DPO) Ahoada Division in Rivers State, Bako Angbashim.

Recall that the DPO was killed on Friday night by gunmen suspected to be cultists terrorizing the area.

According to a viral video, the slain DPO was humiliated and gruesomely murdered by the armed criminals who dismembered the body of the deceased.

It was gathered that the DPO was killed while on operation with his men in the area.

Reacting, IGP in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi ordered the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.

The IGP noted that “such an act is not only an affront on the national status but also a reflection of lack of patriotism and gross illegality”.

He emphasized that such nefarious acts against any operative in the country will not be taken with levity, stressing that all the perpetrators will be caused to face the full wrath of the law.

The IGP extended his condolences to the grieving family, dedicated colleagues and friends of SP Bako Angbashim, urging them to embody his dedication, humility, and selflessness.

  • IGP inaugurates police complaints response unit in Lagos

IGP inaugurates police complaints response unit in Lagos

The Acting Inspector- General of police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun on Wednesday,  inaugurated the first Complaints Response Units (CRU) in the Police Command Ikeja, Lagos.

Egbetokun said the purpose of the CRU was to create a conducive platform of interaction between the police and public, particularly on unprofessional conducts of the officers.

The unit will afford members of the public an opportunity to make complaints and seek redress as individuals and groups against police misconducts and human rights abuses.

Egbetokun, who commended the command for complying with his directive, pointed out that the  directive was from Section 131 of the police Act of 2020, which gave  power to the I-GP to establish such unit in all states.

He noted that the CRU was not established to witch-hunt any police officer but to promote accountability in the police.

“It is going to enhance police-community collaboration and build confidence with  members of the pubilc,” he said.

He appealed to the public to supply the police with information, stressing that the police would  also show transparency so as to get cooperation from the public.

Egbetokun advised the public to desist from reporting police misconduct on social media.

“Officers who are going to man the CRU are going to be carefully selected, they are going to be officers with impeccable integrity.

“They will be trained and be given regular training, including opportunity for overseas training.

“If the police is able to deliver on their constitutional mandate, we will all benefit from it,” he said.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State,  Mr Idowu Owohunwa, said that the command had taken the lead to establish the state CRU as a framework for promoting Police-Citizens’ accountability.

“Their rights will be fully asserted,  if their dignity is also violated or false and malicious information passed against them by misguided members of the public in the line of their official engagements.

“The establishment of the center is, from all intents and purposes, a fulfilment of statutory provisions that is intended to enhance police accountability and engender professional police service delivery, rather than witch – hunt or unduly malign our dutiful officers,” he said.

Owohunwa said  the unit had applications for e-crime reporting, which enabled citizens to report crimes from the comfort of their homes or offices without necessarily coming physically to the police stations.

He said  the internal security space in recent times, had been laced with  threats of cultism, armed robbery, kidnapping, murder and Sexual and Gender Based Violence.

“We are also constantly confronted with the challenge of dissecting and dealing with the thin line between the civil and criminal dynamics of land disputes which are also prevalent in the state.

“Also of routine concern is the traffic gridlock and the attendant occasional traffic robberies, which are compounded by on-going road projects across the state including, in particular, the Lagos-Ibadan highway.

“Hardly does a day pass by without the ever vigilant operatives of the command recovering weapons and illicit drugs of various descriptions at stop and search points, raids of black spots, and other operational engagements.

“We need more  support  toward optimally advancing the attainment of our policing mandate to Lagos residents,” he said.

The commissioner said that crime profile of the state was further accentuated by the prevalence of illegal firearms proliferation, and illicit drug abuse and trafficking.

He said that in addressing the prevalence of sexual and gender based violence in the state, the command was working in partnership with the Office of the wife of Lagos state governor  to establish a purpose-built Centre for the Command’s Gender Unit.

  • Promotion in Nigeria Police will be based on merit, says IGP

Promotion in Nigeria Police will be based on merit, says IGP

The Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, says promotion in the Police Force will henceforth be based on merit.

Egbetokun stated this while addressing officers and men of the Kano State Police Command on Friday.

He also said there would be no more special promotions in the Force.

Egbetokun further enjoined the personnel to shun extortion and other corrupt acts in order to enhance their public image in the ongoing fight against criminal elements in the society.

“I used to tell my officers to stop extortion, the police job is a very good job, is the best job in the world. Is a job that when you do it very well, you get prayers from people.

“It is also a job that you will do and get the opposite of prayers. So it is you the policeman that will determine what you want.

“If you want prayers, you will get enough prayers in this job. And if you want the opposite of prayers you are going to get it too. So, be mindful of that fact,” he said.

Egbetokun reminded them that God loved the police and was looking for a policeman to bless.

“Some of you will have sent away angels that God have sent to you to bless you with your wickedness.

“The moment you are engaging in corruption you are telling God that don’t worry about me I can bless myself, and God will not bother about you.

“But if you address your job with the fear of God, God will single you out for blessing.

“If you want your personal blessing then you must will it for yourself. So, if you want your personal blessing which you wish for yourself or the one from God.

“I will rather chose the blessing that will come from God,” the IGP said.

Egbetokun disclosed that the Force CID would be reorganised such that only qualified and competent officers would function in the department as well as state commands.

“Henceforth, only officers who can inspire public confidence will be given sensitive duty post, such as Commissioners of Police, Area Commanders and DPOs. If you cannot inspire public confidence you will not merit such positions.

“We want competence, we want honesty, we want integrity. That is the only way we can inspire public confidence.

“We want the support of members of the public. We cannot be calling for support when we also are not showing transparency; we’re not showing competence and we are not showing capability.

“We must show capacity. We must show integrity. We must show to the members of the public that we can be trusted. We are the lead agency in internal security. We have to demonstrate this.

“We must show commitment to professionalism. We must improve our relationship with members of the public. We must stop corruption and extortion  in our system. It doesn’t pay us.

“Those who have been engaging in extortion, I want to ask you, how has extortion improved your quality of life?” the IG-P said.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Hussaini Gumel, said over 150 criminals were arrested in different parts of the state .

He said that already a comprehensive security network had been worked out to ensure arrest and prosecution of criminal elements in the state.
