Installation of 5 new Ijaw kings in Ondo excites INC

Ijaw National Congress (INC), on Sunday, commended Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State for recognising and installing five additional Ijaw kings in Arogbo-Ijaw kingdom, Ese-Odo Local Government Area.

The State government had, on Thursday, presented staff of office to the new kings for Ijaw communities.

President of INC, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, gave the commendation in an interview in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

Okaba, who was reacting to the installation of five new kings, applauded Akeredolu for his inclusive governance style and even spread of development projects.

He congratulated the newly-installed kings, urging them to keep the Ijaw flag flying by propagating and preserving its revered culture in a manner reflective of the multi-ethnic nature of the state.

Okaba said with his action, Akeredolu had written his name in gold and shown exemplary leadership in recognising and harnessing the ethic diversity of the state for peaceful co-existence.

According to him, the entire Niger Delta region needs such a leadership approach.

“Ijaw National Congress is very pleased with Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu for recognising and elevating five new Ijaw kingship stools in Ondo and installation of five new Ijaw kings.

“We express the appreciation of all Ijaws in Nigeria and in the Diaspora to the governor.

“This development has given a sense of belonging to all Ijaws in the Niger Delta region and we feel a sense of duty to express our gratitude to the act of justice and equity to the Ijaws.

“We therefore, call on Edo and Akwa Ibom governors to borrow a leaf from Ondo State governor and uplift the status of Ijaws in their respective states.

“The ancestral domains of the Ijaws are endowed with oil and gas reserves, which provide derivation revenue being used to develop other parts of the states.

“Authoritative historical, archaeological and ethnographic facts have shown that the Ijaw people are the oldest aboriginal settlers in the Niger Delta region and must be accorded respect in the states and local government areas they have been  arbitrarily balkanised into.

“INC decries all acts of land grabbing, marginalisation, denial and distortion of the Ijaw cultural heritage under any guise which are ongoing in some states in the region,” Okaba said.

GUBERNATORIAL: “Complete Ayakoromo bridge and we’ll vote PDP”- ljaw youths give condition

Ahead of the March 11, 2022 Governorship and House of Assembly elections, the ljaw ethnic nationality in Delta State has given Governor Ifeanyi Okowa the only condition that would make the community vote for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

According to them, it is if the governor could assure them of the completion of the Ayakoromo bridge and other abandoned road projects in the Delta riverine communities before his administration lapses by May 29, 2022.

This was contained in a statement issued from Ayakoromo community in Burutu and signed by Ekpegha Preye, the spokesman of Concerned Citizens for lzon-lbe Development, which were made available to journalists in Warri on Saturday.

The group stated that the governor should, alternatively be ready to face EFCC/ICPC over his incessant borrowing and loan taken to the detriment of Deltans towards the end of his administration.”

In the statement, the Ijaw group declared that it will not be business as usual for the ljaws to massively vote for the umbrella party due to the ill-treatment the current administration meted against them in the past seven years.

It also accused the outgoing administration in Delta State of deliberate neglect of the Delta ljaw people development-wise, especially the abandoned Ayakoromo bridge, Torugbene Ojobo road, Odorobu, Odofori, Bulu-Angiama road, Apelebiri link road to Patani main Town, among others, in the past seven years.

Consequently, the group vowed to vote against Delta State PDP governorship candidate, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori came 11th March 2023, saying they have lost trust and confidence in his party.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the group noted that the Delta ljaw people are tired of the umbrella party and that they want to change the narrative and try another party in the forthcoming elections.

The statement partly reads, “Governor Okowa has consistently failed to match his words with action by deceiving Ijaw people, especially the Ayakoromo community over failed promise to re-award Ayakoromo bridge project to SETRACO.

“It was unfortunate that Okowa promised to mobilise SETRACO to site in early January 2023 but all promises he made were lies and political gimmick to mock ljaw people in the state.

“We hereby urge Governor Okowa and the PDP led government to do the needful by completing the Ayakoromo bridge and other abandoned road projects in the riverine communities before his administration lapses by May 29 or else, be ready to face EFCC/ICPC over his incessant borrowing and loan taken to the detriment of Deltans towards the end of his administration.”

Ijaw leaders lament presence of armed herdsmen

Ijaw leaders, under the auspices of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) and the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), have cautioned against invasion of Ijaw communities by armed men, suspected to be herdsmen.

They observed that there has been an alarming invasion of communities and farmlands of Ijaw and indeed Niger Delta people by “these intruders who wield dangerous and lethal weapons”.

They, therefore, called on “the Niger Delta states to properly enforce their anti-open grazing laws and protect lives and property.

They also guaranteed confidence in the people to access their farms and make a living without fear and apprehension, especially because lost lives are irreplaceable.”

These remarks are contained in a communique issued on Wednesday by the National President of the INC, Prof. Benjamin Okaba.

The communique was signed after a one-day joint leadership meeting of the INC and the IYC held at the Ijaw House, Yenagoa, Bayelsa capital.

“These herdsmen have carried out gruesome killings of our brothers and sisters in their communities and farmlands across Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers and Ondo States, among others.

“The gory tales of the barbaric and dastardly acts of these agents of provocation have headlined reports, especially in the past couple of years,” he said.

Among INC national officials in attendance were Atamuno Atamuno, First Vice President; Ebipamowei Wodu, Secretary; Philip Agu, Treasurer; and Kenneth Odiowei, Financial Secretary.

Also, IYC officers in attendance included Frank Pukon, National Secretary; Ebilade Ekerefe, National Spokesman; Clever Inodu, Central Zonal Chairman; Kroma Eleki, Deputy Chairman, Conference of Ijaw Traditional Rulers and Elders (CITRE); Austin Enekorogha, Secretary; Gabriel Benamaisia, Clerk, National Representative Council (NRC); and Princess Ebiseri A. J, Deputy Leader, NRC.

Okaba recalled a recent incident on January 24, when some suspected armed herdsmen were reported to have brutally murdered a father and his son at their farm in Toru-Angiama in the Patani Local Government Area of Delta State.

He said, “On the 25th of January 2023, a woman was butchered in her farm at Sabagriea community in Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA of Bayelsa State.

“Also in Bayelsa, suspected herdsmen, in February 2021, attacked a farmer and his son on their farm in Otuoke community, Ogbia LGA.

“The incessant violent invasions and attacks are designed to annex and control spaces and lands by these herdsmen and their masters with the sinister plot to subjugate Ijaw nation and the Niger Delta.

“We strongly condemn in its entirety, all clandestine attempts laced with terrorist agenda by herdsmen and their masters to take over the bushes of Ijaw nation.

“We are resolved to resist any attempts by strange elements to terrorize and chase away Ijaw people from their ancestral lands and heritage.

“We support all anti-open grazing laws duly enacted by the Houses of Assembly of Niger Delta states and assented to by their Governors to promote peace and sustainable development.”

To me, politics in Nigeria is a conspiratorial race to be ahead of others. Hence, a politician’s worth in our country is tied to and proportionate to what he can attract to his constituency and by implication his constituents.

It is no news and not novel that Delta State ranks amongst the richest States, if not the richest in Nigeria now. This is due largely to the abundant Oil and Gas buried in the bowel of Ijaw Land in the state; accruing Petrodollars to the State Treasury through the Federation Account, 13% Oil Derivation Fund, Ecological Fund, etcetera.

With the Petrodollars used in paying the State Bills, Leading Politicians from Urhobo, Isoko, Ika, Oshimilli (Igbo), etcetera, have singularly or collectively attracted lots of legacy projects to their ethnic nations and encouraged and promoted qualified hands to the pinnacle of their chosen careers since the advent of the forth republic in 1999.

Under the Governor James Onanefe Ibori Government from 1999 to 2007, the Urhobos attracted to their land Delta State Polytechnic, Oghara, College of Physical Education, Mosogar, Faculty of Medicine/University Teaching Hospital, Oghara.

They also connected almost all, if not all Urhobo towns and villages, including but not limited to Okwagbe Waterside, Oforigbala, etcetera, by River Forcados, a predominantly Ijaw area of the state to the national grid and by road network.

On their part, the Isokos attracted Faculties of Law and Engineering of the Delta State University, Abraka, and a Polytechnic to Ozoro. This is in addition to network of roads that are now crisscrossing their entire landscape.

The Aniomas were not left out, as they were also able to attract a Campus of Delta State University, Abraka, to Anwai and a Polytechnic to Ogwashi-Ukwu.

Meanwhile, Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, as Governor of our State from 2015 to date has also developed and transformed his Delta North Senatorial District, particularly his once rusty and sleepy home town, Owa-Alero, to a kind of Dubai.

He has built a University Campus more befitting than a main University Campus, Advanced Diagnostic Medical Centre, Mother and Child Hospital, Teacher’s Institute Training Centre, Federal Road Safety Training School, Teaching Hospital, etcetera, in his home town, Owa-Alero.

Okowa has upgraded The College of Education, Agbor, to a University and made the former Delta State University, Anwai Campus, an autonomous University, with lots of infrastructure under construction in them.

The Governor has constructed and is still constructing a network of roads, including a Flyover, and lots of other infrastructures in his Delta North Senatorial District.

On employment and empowerment of Deltans cum positioning of Civil Servants in strategic and juicy offices in the State, it is an open secret that Okowa did not see Delta as a multi-ethnic State, with the lopsidedness in favour of his Delta North, particularly his Ika tribe.

Very unfortunately and sadly, in spite of the fact that Delta State has been receiving stupendous amounts of money as Monthly Allocation from the Federation Account and 13% Derivation Funds since 1999 to date, the goose that lays the Golden Egg for the State, Ijaw Land, hasn’t been given commensurate attention. Infact, the Okowa Administration has since abandoned Ijaw Land and it’s People, as if they are not part of Delta State!

Deltans, is it not unimaginable that Governor Okowa established three Universities with a campus in his hometown, bringing the State owned Universities to five, with none, not even a campus in Ijaw Land?

The all important Ayakoromo Bridge that Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, former Governor of Delta State conceived, awarded and started construction work in 2013, which Okowa inherited and promised to complete in his 2015 and 2019 Campaigns and lately again in fifteen months time but abandoned long ago was finally revoked recently.

Similarly, the School of Marine Technology, Burutu, which looks like a glorified Primary School, not even up to Cavegina Primary School, Warri, in terms of infrastructures on ground, is nowhere on the list of infrastructures Okowa is building.

Also, the Bomadi-Ojobo Road that spans about 90% of Burutu South State Constituency which has been cleared, excavated and sand-filled to Torugbene, but still very far from it’s terminal point at Ojobo, is below the standard of a befitting Earth Road. As a matter of fact, it is now a death trap to motorists and commuters.

Does this corroborate what Deltans, particularly PDP Members, have been saying, whenever and wherever two or more are gathered, that “Okowa is only serving himself, his family and village, Owa-Alero, than the good people of Delta State”?

Oh yeah…is it not unimaginable why the Ijaws are now saying too that “the sacrifices from them to PDP Candidates, particularly Okowa, with their massive support and votes that brought and sustained PDP in power since 1999 to date in Delta State without commensurate legacy projects sited in Ijaw Land and non appointment of their children to positions of relevance in the State Executive Council, Agencies and Parastatals have left an indelible mark of callousness and ingratitude on all that have governed the State, principally Okowa”.

Weep for Delta Ijaws for the SLAVERY ROMANCE WITH PDP IN THE PAST 24 YEARS. WHITHER IJAW LEADERS; STILL FOR YOUR STOMACH INFRASTRUCTURE?

Nowadays, unless you lobby the people with money ? to get fake supporters , the truth you preach and put into practice will be denied by even your relatives, making you stand alone without a single supporter. I am not perturbed for speaking the truth, and indeed to power!

Where are the Ijaw Political Leaders? Most of you claim to be very close to Okowa. Are you aware that he will be leaving Osadebay House on May 29, 2023?

Ijaw Political Leaders, elections are here again, what are you going to tell our people this time; vote PDP and Okowa’s Stooges in Delta State and the Atiku/Okowa Ticket when the Ijaw Nation in Delta State has been abandoned by same Okowa?

Having played ‘Judas Iscariot’ amongst Southern Governors on where Nigeria’s next President should come from, is it when he becomes Vice President in his dreams that he will remember or you will draw his attention to the plight of the Ijaw Nation? What he delibrately refused to do as Executive Governor, I am afraid he will even remember as Vice President that is like a spare tyre!

It is most unfortunate that a great number of Ijaw Leaders are still carrying Okowa’s Cross, encouraging and preaching “Atikulooting” for President and “Okowayo” for Vice President in the deceitful name of party politics or party supremacy that looks cultic; praising the duo unduly for the crumbs given you that you call patronage.

Honestly, your selfishness, apart from being legendarily absurd and irritating, is tantamount to a slave glorifying his or her neck shackles as gold.

I seriously blame the naivety and lack of selflessness in political bargain by Ijaw Leaders, particularly the office holders, past and present, in the mould of Senator, House of Representatives Members, Ministers, Deputy Governor, House of Assembly Members and Commissioners from 1999 to date. Are you equating your personal gains and comfort to the development of Ijaw Nation, hence you are quiet? What an irony!

It is an open secret that you have only succeeded in exploiting the timidity and lack of political and socioeconomic exposure of the Ijaws for this long. Yes, by your exhibition of egocentrism in leadership, resulting in the abandonment of the Ijaw Nation, to say that you have failed the Ijaws woefully is an understatement!

As you continue in the unprincipled and unprogressive politics of personality cults, fueled strictly not by great ideas, or geared toward the welfare of our people, but by your selfish gains, you will soon find no space in the political field.

This is because awareness has dawned on all in our ethnic nation, as the scales of timidity and lack of exposure have been peeled off the peoples eyes.

The 2023 General Elections will not only test the democratic credentials of the Ijaws, it will also show that they can free themselves from the shackles of political stronghold of any person or group of persons with the belief of perpetual political entitlement and dominance.

There is no doubt that this will teach the oppressors of the Ijaw Nation, within and outside, never to underestimate the focused energy of a people that have resolved not to be taken for granted.

I hope and pray that the blind fanatics who eat the crumbs falling from Governor Okowa’s Table would have a mental reset.

Fellow Ijaws of Delta State, this is the time to take our destiny in our hands by rejecting the PDP and it’s Candidates from top to bottom. Cart a new part that we can visibly see to develop our land and people.

The rumour mill is awash with the good news flying all over Delta State and beyond that, Godsday Orubebe, a highly revered, respected and priceless national political asset, before accepting the appointment to lead the Omo-Agege Governorship Campaign had reached agreement with all stake holders of the party, particularly Omo-Agege and Tinubu to give due attention to Delta Ijaw Development.

This, Tinubu had confirmed by pledging in the open before our leading freedom fighter, Government Ekpemupolo, aka Tompolo and the cream of Ijaw Nation at Oporoza, when he visited recently.

On his part, Omo-Agege, while embarking on his campaign affirmed in all Ijaw towns he has visited that he will establish a Campus of Delta State University in Ijaw Land; that, he will complete Ayakoromo Bridge and the very important Bomadi/Ojobo Road.

He has also promised to improve on the existing infrastructures and build new befitting infrastructures in the School of Marine Technology, Burutu, and that he is going to embark on massive human capital and infrastructural development of Ijaw Land.

Yes, for the first time, the Ijaw Nation in Delta State which has been the deciding block in the State Elections have entered a pact with the next Governor of our State, Ovie Omo-Agege, by God’s grace, and indeed all the stake holders of the APC.

Therefore, the All Progressives Congress, APC, with our visionary and lionhearted son, Elder Godsday Peter Orubebe, in charge of the Omo-Agege Governorship Campaign Council as Director-General, is the sure way to Ijaw survival in Delta State.

It is hoped that the Ijaws cannot wait to fulfill their part of the agreement by massively voting the APC Candidates, particularly Tinubu and Omo-Agege, so they can reap the dividends of democracy and undoubtedly the spoils of the offices of the duo mentioned above.

On the above note, may God give the Ijaws, including the enemies within, the grace to overcome selfishness and work collectively for the betterment of all Ijaws by voting Tinubu and Omo-Agege, and all that are contesting under the platform of the APC.

    God bless Ijaw Nation!

    God bless Delta State!

    God bless Nigeria!

Sylvester: Ijaw leaders in Lagos urge speedy court judgement

Ijaw leaders in Lagos have called for speedy court judgement of the case of Sylvester Oromoni who was a student of Dowen College, Lagos.

Mr Regent Youmor, Coordinator and Ex-president, Ijaw Community in Lagos, told newsmen in Lagos on Wednesday that the unfortunate incident was more of a moral issue than legal.

Youmor said that the Ijaw community wants an expedited court judgement for Sylvester Oromoni in order to bury his corpse.

He said that it was against the culture and traditions of Ijaw people to keep a young man’s corpse without burial for a year.

He said that the right thing to do was to bury the corpse so that the soul could rest peacefully.

Newsmen reports that Oromoni died on Nov. 30, 2021.

His family is alleging that he died from injuries he sustained in an attack by five senior students of Dowen College, for refusing to join a cult.

The family also alleges he was forced to drink a substance by his attackers.

Advice by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) released on Jan. 4, however, disputed the allegations.

It stated that an autopsy revealed the cause of the student’s death as acute bacterial pneumonia due to severe sepsis.

Youmor said, “The case is a sensitive case involving a corpse that is yet to be buried.

“We, therefore, appeal that judgement be passed speedily in order for the corpse soul to rest peacefully.”

He said that the Ijaw leaders in Lagos want to see justice done on the case and speedily too because there were spiritual implications for not burying a young child that died mysteriously.

Among those calling for speedy judgement included Mr Ebitimi Dio-Posibi, who said angry reactions from various elders and youth organisations trailed the delay by the judiciary in concluding investigation one year after.

Dio-Posibi said that due to long judicial process, the youth had yet to be buried against Ijaw tradition and culture which was causing the elders great concern.

Mr Henry Oyobolo, immediate past Chairman of Ijaw Youths Council, Lagos chapter, said that it was almost one year since his death under mysterious circumstances.

Oyobolo said that up till now, the fact finding court which started in Epe since January had yet to conclude its assignment.

He said that this was quite frustrating and the Ijaw people were not happy.

Youmor said that the Ijaw leaders in Lagos, in unison, plead with the investigative court for quick dispensation of justice as justice delayed was justice denied.

He prayed for the soul of their departed bright star to rest in peace.

Marginal Oilfields: Ijaw leaders pray court to void licences

Some Ijaw leaders on Thursday prayed the Federal High Court in Yenagoa to cancel the marginal oil field licences issued on June 29 by the Federal Government.

The leaders claimed that the licences were issued in breach of a restraining order of the court.

The plaintiffs are Chief Brown Agu (Opu Agu VIII), Mrs Rosemary John-Oduone, President Ijaw Women Connect and Mr Femowei Friday, on behalf of themselves and the Ijaw Ethnic Nationality.

Their lawyer, Mr Enie Otrofanowei, contended that the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources flouted an April 5 injunctive order of the court by granting the licences.

“We are seeking to invalidate or set aside the licences and we seek a short adjournment since the defendants are absent today, to argue our application,” Otrofanowei said.

The judge, Justice Isa Dashen, ordered that hearing notices be issued to all the defendants and adjourned the case to Oct. 5.

It will be recalled that the judge had on April 5 restrained the Federal Government from issuing licences for marginal oilfields in the Niger Delta pending the determination of the suit filed by plaintiffs.

The plaintiffs had in 2020 approached the court seeking to halt licencing of marginal oilfields in the Niger Delta.

The oil fields bid winners were announced on June 1, 2021.

Marginal oilfields are shallow assets with less than 10 million barrels reserves that require further development before production.

The defendants in the suit marked No. PHC/YEN/CS/81/2020 are the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Minister of Petroleum Resources and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources.

The plaintiffs are asking the court to restrain the respondents from advertising, receiving and approving bids in respect of marginal fields.

Dashen inherited the case from Justice Abimbola Awogboro who was  transferred to the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court.

  • Delta Govt unfair to Ijaws – Omo-Agege

Delta Govt unfair to Ijaws – Omo-Agege

The Deputy President of the Senate. Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege, on Sunday said that the Delta Government had not been fair to the Ijaw ethnic nationality in the state.

Omo-Agege, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Candidate in Delta, made the observation when he visited the Ijaw nations.

He was hosted by the Ijaw people at the premises of Mr Dan Ekpebide in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of the state.

Omo-Agege who was flanked by his running mate, Mr Friday Osanebi, thanked the people for the honour

Addressing the crowd, Omo-Agege said that he was ready to change the current narrative in the state if elected as governor.

The lawmaker, representing Delta Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, said he was pained by the sufferings the Ijaws were subjected to in the state.

“I have always felt the pain of the Ijaw nations because I know their contributions to the economy of this country.

“I believe that government has been unfair to the Ijaw people, given their contribution to the economy of this country.

“I know as a consequence of that contribution, so much is returned to our state by ways of FAC allocation and 13 per cent derivation.

“But if you look around and asked yourself, is their anything on ground and more specifically in the Ijaw nation commensurate with that receipt, the answer is no.

“We are prepared to change the narrative of Delta, we are prepared to judiciously use the resources that will come to the state to the benefit of our people,” he assured.

Omo-Agege said that when voted into power, he would ensure prompt payment of pension and gratuities.

According to him, the era when, “people spend the best part of their lives rendering services to the state and after retirement they will not be paid their pension and gratuity is gone”.

He said that his administration would focus among others, creating employment and empowerment of the people, developing the state, ensuring peace and security.

Omo-Agege urged the people to support his governorship ambition, adding that they would be carried along.

“We will do better than this government. I seek your partnership in all ramifications as I run this governorship race. I cannot dictate to the Ijaw nation what their entitlement should be, but by way of dialogue.

“This is not about APC or PDP, it is about leadership, competence and orientation. Some believed you get there, collect the money and share while others believe it is about baking the cake to the benefit of all.

“When you think differently and act differently, you have a better outcome, this is what I commit to the people of Delta.

“Before we can make genuine case for oil companies to return, we must address the issues of insecurity in the state. So our cardinal agenda is to provide peace and security,” he said.

Omo-Agege said that with the support from his side, together and a sustainable support from the Ijaw leadership, he was confident of winning the governorship election in 2023.

Earlier, the host, Mr Ekpebide thanked Omo-Agege for honouring the call.

“I am delighted to have you in my house. After 2007, I have not been active in politics but today I am wholeheartedly declaring my support for my brother Omo-Agege and the party he represents.

“My official declaration will be done in Okerenkoko which is my ward headquarters. Where ever you
stand, that is where I will stand.

“I am not alone, I am working with my brothers, friends and others in the struggle. Very soon we will roll out and I am very sure we will get to the promse land,” he said.

Ekpebide said that the achievement of Omo-Agege in the Delta Central spoke volumes, expressing hope that the development would transcend to the Ijaw nation when he became the governor.

Also, an APC chieftain in Delta, Mr Michael Johnny, said the Ijaws were ready to work with Omo-Agege in the governorship race.

Johnny also thanked Ekpebide for declaration support for APC.

“The Ijaw APC are ready to work with you and others that are willing to join us to achieve this great opportunity that is coming to us,” Johnny said.

In attendance were representatives from various Ijaw communities in Delta among whom were Dr Chris Ekiyor, former Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in Delta  and others from Edo, Bayelsa and Rivers.

  • Osinbajo performs groundbreaking of bridge linking Yenegoa to Southern Ijaw

Osinbajo performs groundbreaking of bridge linking Yenegoa to Southern Ijaw

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has performed the groundbreaking of the construction of Angiama-Oporoma Bridge, which will link Yenogoa, Capital of Bayelsa, to Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

Delivering a speech at the event on Saturday, Osinbajo, who drove through the Yenagoa-Oporoma-Ukubie road, said that the natural beauty and enormous potential of the great state was poignant and self evident.

He said that the construction of the bridge, which was, in itself, a significant component of the road, would have far reaching impact on the lives of the people of the community and unlock their potential.

“The farmers and fishermen that will be connected to new markets as easier and more efficient logistics enables them expand their operations, employ more people, and provide better opportunities for their families.

“Not to mention the improvement of security through an access road that circumvents sea pirates, and allows traders go about their businesses safely.

“No local economy in the world can survive by being isolated; cities and towns thrive partly because they develop and sustain infrastructure that allows for profitable and free economic, social, and cultural exchanges.

“And so by facilitating easier access to places like Yenagoa, and beyond, with this bridge, we will be laying a foundation for development that will deepen commerce and create individual and collective opportunities for the people of these communities.’’

According to him, communities like Oporoma, Angiama, and others across the Niger-Delta, are host to vast amounts of mineral wealth and natural resources.

He said that the communities deserved to have considerable developmental gains to show for it.

“We are well on our way towards correcting historical lapses in this respect, as a matter of urgency, through the collaborative efforts of the federal, state, and local governments, each one putting aside personal interests, and doing the best they can for the communities which have undeservedly suffered for so long.

“And so we take this bridge, in the long line of Gov. Douye Diri’s ambitious projects across health, education, security and infrastructural development, as a symbol of those ongoing efforts.

“It should not cost you almost the same amount of money to move from Oporoma or Angiama to Yenagoa, as it does to Benin or Lagos; and we believe those days are almost behind you.

“We are confident that what your administration has started will be completed at the highest level of quality and in good time.

“We encourage the people of the community to take ownership of this, as with all the ongoing projects of this administration, and to work with the government to ensure that it is completed and maintained without hindrance or sabotage.’’

He assured Bayelsa people of Federal Government’s full support and collaboration in every way possible.

He said that the milestone was just the beginning of greater things to come.

“There are dreams on this side of the proposed bridge as it is flagged off today – dreams that it will be speedily completed, and that our people will thus be connected to all the possibilities needed to realise their full potentials.

“Once more, I congratulate Gov. Diri, the government and people of Bayelsa on these game changing achievements as they unfold.

“We celebrate the progress being made here today and stand with you in your journey to building a Bayelsa that commands the respect of cities everywhere in the world, a Bayelsa where every town, village, people, or person, can benefit from their God given resources and live their lives in peace and prosperity.”

In his address, Diri said that Osinbajo had demonstrated that indeed he was a Bayelsan by his presence at the event.

He said he was pleased the historic and iconic event of the groundbreaking of the Angiama-Oporoma Link Bridge would occur during the activities commemorating the second anniversary of the prosperity administration.

The governor said he was pleased that a valued and cherished leader, friend and brother accepted the invitation to perform the groundbreaking of the project.

He also commended the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the firm handling the project and appreciated the Federal Government for its support.

“CCECE has proven to us that they are our reliable friends; they have proven to us that they have what it takes to complete this bridge at a reliable time.

“May I at this juncture appreciate the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“This, indeed, is a Federal Government road; and upon the construction by the previous administration, ranging from former President Goodluck Jonathan, when he was governor, down to Seriake Dickson Restoration Government, you all remember that recently, we had a refund of infrastructure which was refunded by the Federal Government under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“And those were of the funds that have enabled us to do what we are doing across the state,’’ he said.

Diri said he would continue to partner with the Federal Government in developing the state.

The highlight of the event was the conferment of chieftaincy title on the vice president—“Ebiyiakubo-owei keni of Agia-Ibe’’ meaning the One Who Brings Glory to the Land of Agie-Ibe.

Osinbajo had earlier paid a courtesy call to traditional rulers at the Bayelsa Traditional Rulers Council Secretariat, Yenegoa.

JUST IN: Osinbajo visits Bayelsa, dresses as Ijaw man, sets tongues wagging

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Saturday visited Bayelsa State to among other activities, flag off the construction of the Angiama-Oporoma bridge.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Osinbajo, however, sets tongue wagging when he dressed as an Ijaw man to visit some traditional rulers in the State.

Reacting to the Vice President’s dressing on social media, while many admired Osinbajo, others believe the dress code is part of his secret campaign for the 2023 presidential election.

TNG reports, Osinbajo arrived in Bayelsa via the International Airport, and was received by the State Governor Douye Siri and other dignitaries.

2023: I am not privy to any treaty to produce Ijaw Gov in Delta – Chief EK Clark

Elder statesman, Chief EK Clark has denied any knowledge of any accord for Ijaw ethnic nationality to produce the next Delta State Governor in 2023.

The social media was agog last week that Gov Ifeanyi Okowa, who hails from Delta North senatorial district, allegedly swore to an oath, years ago, to hand over power to Ijaw in 2023.

Clark while responding to oath issue declared that such accord was not known to him, but explained the arrangement to make Kingsley Otuaro deputy governor was sealed in his Asokoro, Abuja residence by five persons, namely, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, Senator James Manager, Otuaro, Senator Okowa and himself (Clark).

The former Minister in the First Republic noted that: “It is not to my knowledge and I was never a party to an arrangement that Okowa should hand over to an Ijaw person at the end of his term and there was no working accord known to me.

“It was not a part of the arrangement when I decided to support Dr Ifeanyi Okowa in 2015. It was not a matter between the Aniomas and the Ijaws. It was not based on any condition other than competence, equity and, fair play.

“Some of us championed the cause of Delta North producing the governor of Delta State in 2015 for inclusiveness and unity of the state.

“For record purposes, I would like to mention how in 2014, His Majesty, Prof Edozien, the Asagba of Asaba, accompanied by 11 traditional rulers of Anioma extraction with Chief Benjamin Elue, former deputy governor of Delta State, as Anioma Congress secretary, came to pay me a visit, requesting that an Anioma indigene be considered for the governorship of Delta state in 2015, and to support them in their demand for Anioma State.

“Prof Edozien after our discussions, invited me to Asaba, to attend a mega rally organised at the Cenotaph, Asaba. I was the guest of honour, in order to identify with the Anioma, I dressed in Anioma attire. When it was my turn to speak in reply to their address, I assured them that I will support their request, and will see that it is realised.

“At a subsequent meeting, with the then governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, I discussed the matter with him and we agreed that the Delta North should produce the gubernatorial candidate of PDP in 2015, for proper integration in the state.

“That was the reason why we recommended Dr Steve Oru to replace Godsday Orubebe as a Minister representing Delta State in Dr Goodluck Jonathan’s government, instead of Dr Cairo Ojougboh who is also from Anioma. Dr Ojougboh then took Dr Oru’s position as the Vice Chairman of the PDP in South-South.

“I will like to state with the greatest respect that the main beneficiaries of these series of interactions is our competent and intelligent governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, the incumbent Governor of Delta state

“It is at this juncture that Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, came to me in Abuja, where we decided to adopt the candidature of Dr Ifeanyi Okowa.

“The arrangement for Okowa to become PDP gubernatorial candidate in Delta State with Otuaro as his deputy was finally sealed in my house.”
