  • 7 killed, 1 injured in Ikorodu cult clash

No fewer than seven people were reportedly killed during a violent clash between two rival cultic groups, which started on Monday in Ijede area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, who confirmed the incident in Lagos on Wednesday, said the groups, KK and Eiye Confraternities, were involved in the incident.

Elkana said that the command immediately responded and arrested 10 suspects.

He explained that the fracas, leading to deaths, started when an argument ensued between two members of the cult groups, while one of the fighters was stabbed.

The police spokesman said that the gang whose member was stabbed, believing him to be dead, launched a retaliatory attack on members of the rival group.

He said that the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumisu, immediately called for an emergency meeting and summoned the Area Commander, DPOs and the tactical commanders where the incident occurred.

According to him, the police chief also deployed the Special Strike Force men to arrest the social miscreants and deal with the situation.

Elkana recalled that a programme had earlier been organised for cult members to renounce their membership, “so the CP is determined to deal with the menace in the state”.

Reacting to the development, Mr Fatiu Salisu, Chairman, Ijede Local Council Development Area (LCDA), said the clash started on Jan. 20 when a man was stabbed with a bottle and was rushed to the General Hospital.

Salisu said that the man was rejected due to the nature of his injuries and was later referred to a teaching hospital where he was attended to.

According to him, some of his members thought he had died, and thereafter moved a revenge mission in the community.

“I was at a meeting in Ikeja when I was called that a boy belonging to ‘Eiye Fraternity’ had been stabbed, and when I came I saw one corpse at the roundabout.

“On that day, two people died, another four were killed in the afternoon of the next day, while another one was killed today, making seven,” he said.

The chairman lauded all the security agencies, including the army, for their timely intervention, saying that they quickly swung into action, patrolling the hot spots to checkmate activities of the cultists in the community.

“We have informed Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Commissioner of Police on what was going on in the community,” he said.

In his reactions, Chief Babatunde Ogunmuyiwa, the Secretary to the traditional ruler in Ijede, disclosed that the incident started on Jan. 20 when some boys from Ipakan and Egbin engaged in a fracas and one of them was badly injured with a bottle.

Ogunmuyiwa said the boy was quickly rushed to the hospital for treatment, but some of his members spread rumours that he was dead, which led to the fracas.

“After series of investigations, we realised it was a rivalry clash between fraternities.

“We called an emergency meeting among the chiefs and resolved that we should appease the gods.

“The community has been peaceful since most of the boys renounced their membership until this moment,” he said.

Building collapse: Lagos shuts two churches, 17 houses in Ikorodu

Officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, at the weekend shut down 19 buildings in Igbogbo Baiyeku area of Ikorodu, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria for violating the town planning laws of the State.

General Manager, LASBCA, Engr. Abiola Kosegbe, led the enforcement team of the agency, escorted by officials of the State Taskforce. The Chairman, Igbogbo Baiyeku Local Council Development Area, Olusesan Daini was also in the team.

Two churches were among the buildings sealed. One of them is the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, and a Cherubim and Seraphim Church on Bamgbose Street in the area.

In one of the area, eight buildings were shut because their owners did not have building permits and other required documents. Buildings were also shut at Kosebinu Orepekun Street, Market Street, Ogolonto, among others.

According to Kosegbe, the government team was in the area on enforcement and sensitisation to let the people know the reason why they must build right in view of incessant collapsed buildings being experienced in some parts of the state.

She said developers could not erect any building without informing LASBCA, saying that was the reason government officers were shutting down structures.

Kosegbe said any developer that did not notify government about development of their structure could be arrested, as government did not want incidence of collapsed buildings.

According to her, most of the properties sealed had already been served abatement notices, adding that LASBCA also engaged in post construction audit, where those who had already completed their buildings were asked to present documents to ascertain if they got the needed permits to erect such structures.

Chairman, Igbogbo Baiyeku LCDA, Daini, said the essence of the enforcement and sensitisation exercise was to reduce incidence of building collapse and maintain standard.

“The problem we have is that people don’t build right. Affected residents are to go to LASBCA to regularise their documents and those building now should get their building permits. They should be citizens. Government is not doing this alone to generate revenue, but to protect the citizens,” he said.

  • Angry okada riders set police van ablaze over death of colleague

Okada riders have set a police van ablaze at Ibeshe, in Ikorodu area of Lagos following the death of one of their colleagues, whom they suspected was killed by the police on Tuesday night.

Thousands of okada riders were said to have mobilised on Wednesday and attempted to burn down the Ibeshe Police Post but were resisted and later burnt a police van stationed at a dark spot in Ibeshe.

SP Chike Oti, Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State, in a statement said the Lagos State Police Command noted with regret the unfortunate burning of a police patrol van stationed at a black spot in Ibeshe, Ipakodo area of Ikorodu, by irate motorcyclists, popularly called okada riders on Wednesday at about 10.45am.

“The incident was occasioned by an encounter between policemen manning the black spot and an okada man plying the routes way beyond Lagos state approved time of 10pm.

“As he approached the police pin down point, the police team observed that he was carrying a passenger with a big bag placed between him and the rider and so, they flagged him down but instead of obeying the police hand signal, the okada man increased his speed in order to evade police scrutiny. Sadly, he ended up in a ditch and passed on. Meanwhile his associate with the suspicious bag vanished into the thin air.

“However, today, 30/05/18, at about 10am, Okada riders sympathetic to their late colleague, mobilised in their thousands and attempted to burn the Ibeshe Police Post. They were resisted. So they moved and found a softer target which was a police van stationed at a known black spot in Ibeshe and set it ablaze,” he said.

According to him, in view of this incident, the police authorities in Lagos warned all those with the penchant to burn, destroy or loot its property/armoury, that henceforth, the Command would be compelled to use all lawful means, including the use of firearms to protect such properties and defend its petsonnel.

“The police in Lagos will no longer standby and watch hoodlums destroy government property worth millions of Naira for whatever reason.

“Any group of persons with complaints against the police action, must toe the civilised option of registering their complaints with the police authorities for appropriate action,” he added.

He said the Commissioner of Police had directed that the 63 okada riders arrested for burning the police vehicle should be charge to court for arson.

“He has also directed the OC Legal to file a motion to a court of competent jurisdiction to surcharge the suspects for the purchase of another police patrol vehicle,” he stated

  • Police demolish six shrines, free kidnapped couple in Lagos

The Lagos Police Command yesterday rescued a kidnapped couple during the command’s demolition of six shrines at Agbowa, a Lagos suburb.

In the course of the exercise, the police arrested James Adedeji, owner of one of the shrines in whose premises a couple were said to have been rescued on Tuesday night.

Acting Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal, who led reporters to the shrines yesterday, said their demolition was part of efforts to clamp down on ritualists and fraudsters, who establish such places for criminal purposes.

Edgal said the police received intelligence report of illegality at the demolished shrines, adding that they had the backing of all the traditional rulers in the district to pull them down.

Edgal said the police discovered that most of the people who had gone missing or fallen victim to ‘one-chance’ buses usually ended up at shrines in that axis, where some are murdered or fleeced.

He said: “We had the backing of all the traditional rulers in Ikorodu to demolish individually owned shrines that are used to perpetrate crime. Some of those shrines are used for ritual purposes. Others were established by fraudsters with the intent to commit crime.

“So, these six we have demolished were identified as a result of the police and community partnership. We received information from members of the community and we carried out our own findings too.

“I can tell you that as of Tuesday night, when we were still surveying the places, a husband and wife were rescued in one of the shrines. They fell victim and they had been told they would be killed. They were very grateful when the police came to their aid.

“We have arrested an owner. I use this opportunity to appeal to the public to have confidence in the police. They should provide us with valuable information that would lead to the rounding up of all those criminals.

“I want to still assure them that under my watch, their confidentiality is guaranteed. No one would know information came from them. Just as we have gotten these ones, we will get all others and rid Lagos of such criminals.”
